Recent results from HERA and TevaTron on precision tests of QCD with jets, W and Z bosons and photons associated with jets and heavy flavours are presented. The measurements were used to probe QCD at the highest energies, to provide experimental constraints on SM processes that constitute background to new physics, to extract values of the coupling of the strong interaction and to constrain the proton parton distribution functions. The implications of the results on LHC physics are discussed.
Recent results on searches for new physics at Run II of the Tevatron and highlights from HERA are reported. The searches cover many different final states and a wide range of models. All analyses have at this point led to negative results, but some interesting anomalies have been found.
In this review, we first discuss the perspectives concerning a better determination of the proton structure in terms of quarks and gluons at LHC after describing the results coming from HERA and Tevatron. In a second part of the review, we describe the diffractive phenomena at HERA and Tevatron and the consequences for LHC.
The associated production of jets and vector bosons is an important process at hadron colliders. An overview over recent Tevatron vector boson+jets measurements is given with an emphasis on comparisons between data and the predictions of various theory models.
Searches for Physics beyond the Standard Model have entered an exciting new phase: the complete HERA data samples obtained until the end of operations in the Summer of 2007 are now available for analysis. ZEUS and H1 have each collected about 0.5 fb^{-1} of lepton proton data, distributed over electron and positron running, and over different lepton beam polarisations. At the same time the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider is accumulating data at unprecedented rates, with current analyses based on up to 3 fb^{-1}. The Tevatron experiments DZERO and CDF have each already recorded ove…
I review here the latest measurements related to vector boson production in association with light or heavy flavor jets at the Tevatron and at the LHC. The methods to estimate the W+jets and Z+jets background in top-quark analyses are also presented.
Heavy-flavoured jets have been studied in photoproduction at HERA. This includes the first measurement of dijet angular distributions in D* photoproduction and the ratio of the vector/(vector + pseudoscalar) production rate for charm mesons.
Studies of the production of W/Z + jets are important for a variety of reasons. W/Z + inclusive jets is a valuable high statistics sample that allows one to probe the validity of predictions from perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) at both leading and next-to-leading order. W/Z + heavy flavor jets (those originating from b or c production) is a significant background to top and Higgs at the Tevatron and will play an important role at the LHC as well. Herein the latest Tevatron results on these production mechanisms are reviewed with an emphasis on comparison of data results to the lates…
Collider signatures containing bosons and jets are particularly interesting. Recent theoretical effort has been devoted to determining predictions of W/Z + multiple parton production; the high statistics sample of W/Z + jets events collected at the Tevatron is a valuable testbed for probing the validity of these calculations. The final state containing a Z or W boson and one or more b-jets is a promising Higgs search channel at the Tevatron and could be a window to new physics at the LHC. These searches benefit from a deep understanding of the production of W/Z + heavy flavor jets which consti…
Recent results on diffractive dijet and vector boson production and exclusive dijet production from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment are presented.
We present preliminary measurements of $Z/γ^*$+jets, $W+c$ and $Z+b+X$ at the Tevatron, and review recent measurements of vector boson plus inclusive and heavy-flavor jets production. All measurements are in agreement with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. We also point to comparisons of the production rate and kinematics of the data with several Monte Carlo simulation programs of vector boson + jets processes.

A brief survey is given of recent HERA results in jet production and prompt photon production, together with the evaluation of the QCD coupling constant alpha_s.
We present the most recent W and Z production, asymmetries, and V+jets results from the Tevatron collider at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, analyzing data collected by CDF and DZero detectors between 2002-2011. The results include the measurements of the W and Z bosons properties, include boson p_T and asymmetries measurements, and also the W and Z boson plus jets productions. Those measurements provide the precision tests on the electroweak in Standard Model (SM), and high order theoretical predictions.
The CDF and D0 collaborations performed a comprehensive study of the production of vector bosons, W and Z, in association with energetic jets. Understanding the W/Z + jets and W/Z + c, b-jets processes is of paramount importance for the top quark physics, for the Higgs boson measurements, and for many new physics searches. In this contribution the most recent measurements of the associated production of jets and vector bosons in Run II at the Tevatron are presented. The measurements are compared to different perturbative QCD predictions and to several Monte Carlo generators.
We report on recent Z (+jets) measurements from the Fermilab Tevatron proton anti-proton collider. A new D0 measurement of the transverse momentum of Z bosons yields the best measurement to date of the non-perturbative form factor, g2. The production of Z+jets is an major background to many rare signals, and is a vital testing ground for theoretical predictions. Measurements from CDF and D0 of differential cross sections in Z+jet production test NLO pQCD, and in the case of D0, the latest tree-level matrix element with matched parton shower calculations. Improving modelling of this signal will…
This report summarizes recent results on diffraction obtained at HERA, at the Tevatron and by the fixed target experiment E665. The measurements include vector meson production, inclusive diffraction at HERA and the pomeron structure function as inferred from the HERA and the Tevatron data.
Measurements of the inclusive jet cross section and the dijet angular distribution using data from the Tevatron are presented. Comparisons to NLO QCD show good agreement below 250 GeV, but CDF data show an excess at higher ET; qualitative agreement is seen between the CDF and DO cross sections. Analysis of the dijet angular distributions exclude quark compositeness below 2.1 TeV.
A review of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model carried out at high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron facilities is presented, with emphasis on topics of interest for future data taking at the upgraded Tevatron $p{\bar p}$ and HERA $ep$ colliders. The status and discovery prospects are discussed for leptoquarks, Technicolour and supersymmetry, forbidden lepton and quark flavour-changing processes, extra gauge bosons, excited states of composite fermions, generic contact interactions and extra compactified dimensions.
The HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS have recently presented a number of interesting results from studies of the hadronic final state produced in $ep$ collisions. These studies have focussed on deep inelastic scattering events and on the photoproduction of jets, and also on the comparison of the final states produced in these two regimes. Some of these results are reviewed here.
Recent jet physics results from ep and $γ$p scattering at HERA will be reviewed covering cross-section measurements, the extraction of QCD parameters, the transition region from photoproduction to deep-inelastic scattering and the question of parton evolution in the proton.
The DØ and CDF experiments have each collected more than 8 fb-in Run II of Fermilab's Tevatron, and have many recent search results which use up to 5.2 fb-1 . Here I summarize the results of a variety of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model with an emphasis on searches for very exotic phenomena. I will present the status of model-inspired searches for several signatures of supersymmetry, as well as several other searches for several "hidden- valley" inspired models, all of which contain photons and jets in the final state.
Dijet cross sections from the original 1994 ZEUS data analysis are shown compared to NLO calculations. New 1995 cross sections are shown compared to Monte Carlo predictions. The fraction of dijet events with a rapidity gap inbetween the jets is also presented for the new 1995 data.
Recent measurements on the vector boson plus heavy-flavor jets production by the CDF and D0 experiments are presented in comparisons with recent theoretical predictions. Good understanding of such processes is important to improve our understanding of QCD and also to enhance the potential to search for yet-to-be-discovered new physics phenomena which lead to similar final states.
Various measurements of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets decay channel of top quark pair production are presented. The measurements are performed on data samples of up to 2.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity acquired by the CDF and D0 experiments in Run-II of the Tevatron proton-anti-proton collider at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The new Tevatron combination using up to 2.8 fb-1 of data results in a preliminary world average mass of the top quark of m_top = 172.4 +- 1.2 GeV. This corresponds to a relative precision of 0.7%.
The azimuthal distribution of jets produced in the Breit frame in high-Q**2 deep inelastic e+p scattering has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. The measured azimuthal distribution shows a structure that is well described by next-to-leading-order QCD predictions over the Q**2 range considered, Q**2>125 GeV**2.
A comprehensive overview of the latest aspects of jet physics in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV is presented. In particular, measurements of the inclusive jet production, dijet and multi-jet production, and jet substructure studies are discussed.
Recent results on jet production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering and high energy photoproduction at the HERA electron-proton-collider are briefly reviewed. The results are compared to QCD expectations in NLO and $α_s$ determinations using these data are summarized.
Several methods to extract the strong coupling constant $α_s$ by means of highly energetic jets in Deep-Inelastic Scattering are presented. The results from the various methods agree with one another and with the world average. The errors are competetive to those achieved in $α_s$ determinations in other processes such as proton--anti-proton scattering.
A review is given on recent alpha(s) determinations from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations. These are based on measurements of jet cross sections, event shape variables, as well as on the observed scaling violation of the structure function F_2. A HERA average on alpha(s)(m_Z) is presented, in comparison with world mean values.
Approximately taking into account the higher-order effects due to multiple-gluon initial-state radiation, we extract from the latest Tevatron data of prompt J/psi hadroproduction the leading colour-octet matrix elements within the nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism proposed by Bodwin, Braaten, and Lepage. We find that the matrix elements which describe the formation of J/psi mesons from colour-octet cc-bar pairs in the angular-momentum states ^{2S+1}L_J = ^1S_0 and ^3P_J, with J = 0,1,2, which are responsible for the excess of the predicted cross section of inelastic J/psi pho…
Hadronic processes in which hard diffractive production takes place have been observed and analyzed in collider experiments for several years. The experimental rates of diffractive W's and dijets measured at the Tevatron and the cross sections of diffractively produced dijets recently obtained at the HERA experiment are the object of this analysis. We use the Pomeron structure function obtained from the HERA data by two different approaches to calculate the rates and cross sections for these processes. The comparison of theoretical predictions with the measured values reveals some discrepancie…
Latest jet results from the Tevatron are presented in this conference note. These are namely: new results on central inclusive jet production using both cone and $k_T$ algorithms, measurement of decorrelation in azimuthal angle between the two jets with the highest transverse momenta, and study of jet shapes. Results are based on data collected in $\mathrm{p}\bar{\mathrm{p}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 \mathrm{TeV}$ in the years 2001-2004. Depending on the analysis, integrated luminosity of the sample was up to $378 \mathrm{pb}^{-1}$.
The substructure of jets produced in an exclusive and a charm-induced dijet sample in photoproduction and in charged and neutral current interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets were identified using the longitudinally invariant k_T cluster algorithm in the laboratory frame. The substructure of jets has been studied in terms of the jet shape and subjet multiplicity. Comparisons between the dijet sample and the quark-induced samples allow an extraction of the jet substructure for gluons. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations give a good description o…
Prompt photons, together with an accompanying jet, have been studied in the photoproduction regime of ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Predictions based on leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD underestimate the gamma+jet cross sections for transverse energies of prompt photons below 7 GeV, while the kT-factorisation QCD calculation agrees with the data in this region.
Properties of the hadronic final state in photoproduction events with large transverse energy are studied at the electron-proton collider HERA. Distributions of the transverse energy, jets and underlying event energy are compared to $\overline{p}p$ data and QCD calculations. The comparisons show that the $γp$ events can be consistently described by QCD models including -- in addition to the primary hard scattering process -- interactions between the two beam remnants. The differential jet cross sections $dσ/dE_T^{jet}$ and $dσ/dη^{jet}$ are measured.
The results of complementary tests of perturbative QCD in DIS at large centre-of-mass energies at HERA are presented. The analysis of event shape variables allows for the investigation of approaches to understand aspects of non-perturbative QCD such as the formation of the hadronic final state. The strong coupling constant, $α_s$, is extracted from both inclusive jet cross sections and dijet rates and is found to be competitive with the world average.
Recent results on jet cross sections and heavy-flavor production in photoproduction and neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are presented. The jet measurements are used to perform stringent tests of perturbative QCD, to extract precise values of the strong coupling and to constrain further the proton and photon parton distribution functions. The measurement of beauty and charm production at HERA is an important testing ground for perturbative QCD and can provide information on the structure of the proton.
Results are presented for the inclusive jet cross section versus jet transverse energy in proton-antiproton collisions at center of mass energy 1.8 TeV as measured by the CDF and D0 detectors at Fermilab's Tevatron collider. The data are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions using different input parton distribution functions. The ratio of inclusive jet cross sections at center of mass energy 0.63 TeV and center of mass energy 1.8 TeV, versus jet x_T, is also presented and compared to QCD predictions.
Recent searches performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Tevatron for diboson production in final states containing heavy-flavor jets are reported. The searches for WZ and ZZ can be regarded as the ultimate benchmark for the corresponding searches for a low-mass Higgs boson in the WH and ZH final states. Using the exact same techniques as for those Higgs boson searches, the D0 collaboration measured a cross section for WZ/ZZ production of 1.13 +/- 0.36 times its expectation in the standard model, with a diboson signal significance of 3.3 standard deviations (2.9 expected).
The parton distribution functions (PDFs) are a non-negotiable input to almost all theory predictions at hadron colliders. In this talk, I introduce PDF determination by global analysis and discuss selected topics concerning recent relevant data from HERA and the Tevatron, before giving some prospects for the LHC. The combination of H1 and ZEUS cross sections reduces uncertainties and will be an important input to future global PDF analyses. The theoretical description of the heavy-quark contribution to structure functions at HERA has a significant influence on predictions at the LHC. New W and…
Photoproduction events which have two or more jets have been studied in the $W_{γp}$ range 135~GeV $< W_{γp} <$ 280~GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A class of events is observed with little hadronic activity between the jets. The jets are separated by pseudorapidity intervals ($Δη$) of up to four units and have transverse energies greater than 6~GeV. A gap is defined as the absence between the jets of particles with transverse energy greater than 300~MeV. The fraction of events containing a gap is measured as a function of $Δη$. It decreases exponentially as expected for processes in which…
Inclusive jet and multijet cross sections measured in ep collisions in different kinematic regions by the H1 and ZEUS experiments are shown. The measurements are used to extract the strong coupling alpha_s as a function of the scale and at the mass of the Z-boson. Results from prompt photon production in comparison with pQCD calculations are shown in photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering. Other topics address scaled momentum distributions of charged particles, a measurement of the transverse momenta of charged particles and the first measurement of the charge asymmetry at HERA.
Jet cross sections in deep-inelastic scattering over a wide region of phase space have been measured at HERA. These cross section measurements provide a thorough test of the implementation of Quantum Chromodynamics in next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. They also provide the opportunity to test the consistency of the gluon distribution in the proton as extracted from (mainly) inclusive DIS measurements. Comparison of the cross sections with NLO enables accurate extractions of the strong coupling constant, $α_s$, to be made, several of which are reported here.
The HERAFitter project provides a framework for the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs), and tools for assessing the impact of new data on PDFs. In this contribution, HERAFitter is used for a QCD analysis of the legacy measurements of the $W$-boson charge asymmetry and of the $Z$-boson production cross sections, performed at the Tevatron collider in Run II by the D0 and CDF collaborations. The Tevatron measurements are included in a PDF fit performed at next-to-leading order, and compared to the predictions obtained using other PDF sets from different groups. The measurements…
An overview of latest top quark pair production cross-sections measured at the Tevatron is given. These measurements have been carried out in the dilepton, lepton+jets and all-jets channels with an integrated luminosity of about 1fb-1. The measurements are consistent with NNLO calculations.
At the Fermilab Tevatron energies, ($\sqrt{s}$=1800 GeV and $\sqrt{s}$=630 GeV), jet production is the dominant process. During the period 1992-1996, the D0 and CDF experiments accumulated almost 100 pb**-1 of data and performed the most accurate jet production measurements up to this date. These measurements and the NLO-QCD theoretical predictions calculated during the last decade, have improved our understanding of QCD, our knowledge of the proton structure, and pushed the limit to the scale associated with quark compositeness to 2.4-2.7 TeV. In this paper, we present the most recent publish…
Recent results on di-jet, inclusive jets, production at high p_T in Deep Inelastic Scattering DIS and photoproduction gamma p regimes using both the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA are presented. Also studies of integrated jet shape and jet radius dependencies in DIS performed by the ZEUS Collaborations are discussed. All the measurements are found to be well described by calculations at the next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. A combined determination of the value of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(M_Z) from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations using inclusive-jet cross-section measurement…
We calculate the cross section of inclusive direct J/psi hadroproduction at next-to-leading order (NLO) within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), including the full relativistic corrections due to the intermediate 1S_0^[8], 3S_1^[8], and 3P_J^[8] color-octet states. We perform a combined fit of the color-octet (CO) long-distance matrix elements to the transverse-momentum (p_T) distributions measured by CDF at the Fermilab Tevatron and H1 at DESY HERA and demonstrate that they also successfully describe the p_T distributions from PHENIX at BNL RHIC an…
Dijet events in photon-proton collisions in which there is a large pseudorapidity separation Delta eta > 2.5 between the two highest E_T jets are studied with the H1 detector at HERA. The inclusive dijet cross sections are measured as functions of the longitudinal momentum fractions of the proton and photon which participate in the production of the jets, x_pjet and x_gjet respectively, Delta eta, the pseudorapidity separation between the two highest E_T jets, and E_T^gap, the total summed transverse energy between the jets. Rapidity gap events are defined as events in which E_T^gap is less th…
Measurements of cross sections for events with charm and beauty jets in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented. Events with jets of transverse energy E_T^jet > 6 GeV and pseudorapidity -1.0 < eta^jet < 1.5 in the laboratory frame are selected in the kinematic region of photon virtuality Q^2 > 6 GeV^2 and inelasticity variable 0.07 < y < 0.625. Measurements are also made requiring a jet in the Breit frame with E_T^*jet > 6 GeV. The data were collected with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 189 pb^-1. The numbers of charm and beauty …
A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. The results are co…
Results on diffractive scattering observed at HERA and at the TEVATRON are reviewed. This includes the extraction of diffractive parton density functions and determination of the rapidity gap survival probability at HERA and the observation of central exclusive production of final states at the TEVATRON. Finally, preparations to observe diffractive signals at the LHC are discussed.
The photoproduction of dijet events, where the two jets with the highest transverse energy are separated by a large gap in pseudorapidity, have been studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 39 pb$^{-1}$. Rapidity-gap events are defined in terms of the energy flow between the jets, such that the total summed transverse energy in this region is less than some value $E_{\rm T}^{\rm CUT}$. The data show a clear excess over the predictions of standard photoproduction models. This is interpreted as evidence for a strongly interacting exchange of a color-singlet object. Monte …
The latest results on the measurements of electroweak top-quark production at the Tevatron are presented with the full RunII dataset. The CDF and D0 Collaborations have performed measurements of the s, t, and s+t channels in both l+jets and MET+jets final states. Evidence for the production of the s channel is presented for the first time.
A summary of some recent studies in jet physics is given. Topics include leading particle production in light flavor events in e+e- annihilations, an analytical treatment of gluon and quark jets at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (3NLO), and various studies performed at LEP and HERA involving separated gluon and quark jets.
The energy measurement of jets produced by b-quarks at hadron colliders suffers from biases due to the peculiarities of the hadronization and decay of the originating B hadron. The impact of these effects can be estimated by reconstructing the mass of Z boson decays into pairs of b-quark jets. From a sample of 584 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider, we show how the Z signal can be identified and measured. Using the reconstructed mass of Z candidates we determine a jet energy scale factor for b-quark jets with a precisi…
We review the use of Monte Carlo simulation to model backgrounds to top signal at the Tevatron experiments, CDF and D0, as well as the relevant measurements done by the experiments. We'll concentrate on the modeling of W and Z boson production in association with jets, in particular heavy flavor jets, and also comment on the Tevatron experience using matched Monte Carlo.
