New studies of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations are presented on the sensitivity to searches for non-standard signatures of particular SUSY scenarios. These signatures include non-pointing photons, as well as pairs of prompt photons, as expected in GMSB SUSY models, as well as heavy stable charged particles produced in split supersymmetry models, long lived staus from GMSB SUSY and long lived stops in other SUSY scenarios. A detailed detector simulation is used for the study, and all relevant Standard Model backgrounds and detector effects that can mimic these special signatures are included. It is shown that already with less than 100 pb$^{-1}$ the ATLAS and CMS sensitivity will probe an interesting as yet by data unexplored parameter range of these models.
I discuss some essential features of the electroweak hierarchy problem and the ensuing motivation for weak-scale supersymmetry. Taking the hierarchy problem seriously, null results in searches for SUSY at the LHC favor specific regions of SUSY parameter space. More broadly, they suggest investigating a variety of alternative approaches to the hierarchy problem with diverse experimental signatures.
The implications of the LHC SUSY searches as well as the discovery of a new bosonic state compatible with the lightest Higgs boson will be discussed in the context of constrained and general MSSM scenarios. Exploring the MSSM through the Higgs sector is an alternative and complementary path to direct searches, and tight constraints on the MSSM parameter space can be obtained.
In this note we compare the latest 1.04 fb^{-1} LHC searches for squarks and gluinos from jets and missing transverse momentum (MET) with constraints arising from the LEP Higgs bound. For General Gauge Mediation models with moderate values of tan(beta) we find that the zero-lepton MET searches of supersymmetry at the LHC are only starting to be competitive with the Higgs bounds from LEP. From this perspective and for such models, the SUSY searches at the LHC are still very much in the beginning.
SUSY searches at the LHC as well as the 126 GeV Higgs boson indicate that superparticles, especially squarks and gluinos, are not so light as we expected. It is important to investigate SUSY searches which do not rely on the colored superparticles. As a clue for the investigation, we focus on the muon g-2 anomaly, which can be explained by the SUSY contributions if some of neutralinos, charginos, and sleptons are as light as of order 100 GeV. We propose the muon-(g-2)-motivated MSSM as a benchmark model, where squarks are decoupled but the superparticles corresponding to the muon g-2 are light…
We have found the possible region of parameters of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) within the bounds from the experimental results of the Higgs mass, the rare decay mode of $b$-quark, the muon $g-2$, the dark matter abundance, and the direct searches for the lighter stop (i.e., one of the supersymmetric partners of top quark) at the LHC. We present numerical results of calculations for the one loop effects of supersymmetric particles in the processes of $τ^+ τ^-$, $b \overline{b}$, $t \overline{t}$, and $Z h$ production at the ILC by using benchmark points within the possible …
In this talk, prospects for the charged Higgs in non-SUSY models are reviewed, in view of LHC results (as of October, 2012). The four models (Type I, Type II, lepton-specific and flipped) without tree level flavor-changing neutral currents are discussed. Updates for the case in which the charged Higgs is lighter than the top, leading to production in top decays, are presented along with expectations for the future. If the charged Higgs is heavier than the top quark, detection may be possible through the tau-nu decay mode. In addition, it is pointed out that the decay of the charged Higgs into …
We define benchmark models for SUSY searches at the LHC, including the CMSSM, NUHM, mGMSB, mAMSB, MM-AMSB and p19MSSM, as well as models with R-parity violation and the NMSSM. Within the parameter spaces of these models, we propose benchmark subspaces, including planes, lines and points along them. The planes may be useful for presenting results of the experimental searches in different SUSY scenarios, while the specific benchmark points may serve for more detailed detector performance tests and comparisons. We also describe algorithms for defining suitable benchmark points along the proposed …
Discussions are underway for a high-energy proton-proton collider. Two preliminary ideas are the $\sqrt{s}=33$ TeV HE-LHC and the $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV VLHC. With Bayesian statistics, we calculate the probabilities that the LHC, HE-LHC and VLHC discover SUSY in the future, assuming that nature is described by the CMSSM and given the experimental data from the LHC, LUX and Planck. We find that the LHC with $300$/fb at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV has a $15$-$75%$ probability of discovering SUSY. Should that run fail to discover SUSY, the probability of discovering SUSY with $3000$/fb is merely $1$-$10%$. Wer…
Global frequentist fits to the CMSSM and NUHM1 using the MasterCode framework are updated to include the public results of searches for supersymmetric signals using \sim 1/fb of LHC data recorded by ATLAS and CMS and \sim 0.3/fb of data recorded by LHCb. We also include the constraints imposed by the electroweak precision and B-physics observables, the cosmological dark matter density and the XENON100 search for spin-independent dark matter scattering. Finally we also investigate the impact of a possible Higgs signal around 125 GeV. The various constraints set new bounds on the parameter space…
In this paper, we present results based on a combination of four inclusive topology searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) from the CMS experiment, and use this to determine universal mass limits on gluino and third-generation squarks in the context of Natural-like SUSY spectra. The class of Natural-like SUSY spectra considered follows the typical Natural SUSY model made up of a gluino, third-generation squarks, and higgsino sparticles, but is extended to more complex spectra containing sleptons. We show that the limits obtained from the combination of inclusive topology searches are far more stabl…
We examine production and decay of heavy neutral SUSY Higgs bosons pp-> H,\ A -> τ\barτ within the hMSSM and compare against a perhaps more plausible natural supersymmetry scenario dubbed m_h^{125}({\rm nat}) which allows for a natural explanation for m_{weak}\simeq m_{W,Z,h}\sim 100 GeV while maintaining m_h\simeq 125 GeV. We evaluate signal against various Standard Model backgrounds from γ,Z ->τ\barτ, t\bar{t} and vector boson pair production VV. We combine the transverse mass method for back-to-back (BtB) taus along with the ditau mass peak m_{ττ} method for acollinear taus as our signal ch…
In the post-LHC8 world-- where a Standard Model-like Higgs boson has been established but there is no sign of supersymmetry (SUSY)-- the detailed profiling of the Higgs boson properties has emerged as an important road towards discovery of new physics. We present calculations of the expected deviations in Higgs boson couplings $κ_{τ,b}$, $κ_t$, $κ_{W,Z}$, $κ_g$ and $κ_γ$ versus the naturalness measure $Δ_{\rm EW}$. Low values of $Δ_{\rm EW}\sim 10-30$ give rise to a natural Little Hierarchy characterized by light higgsinos with a mass of $μ\sim m_Z$ while top squarks are highly mixed but lie i…
We perform a study of the impact of the recently released limits on BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) by LHCb and CMS on several SUSY models. We show that the obtained constraints can be superior to those which are derived from direct searches for SUSY particles in some scenarios, and the use of a double ratio of purely leptonic decays involving Bs -> mu+ mu- can further strengthen such constraints. We also discuss the experimental sensitivity and prospects for observation of Bs -> mu+ mu- during the sqrt(s)=7 TeV run of the LHC, and its potential implications.
This letter presents new results on the combined sensitivity of the LHC and underground dark matter search experiments to the lightest neutralino as WIMP candidate in the minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We show that monojet searches significantly extend the sensitivity to the neutralino mass in scenarios where scalar quarks are nearly degenerate in mass with it. The inclusion of the latest bound by the LUX experiment on the neutralino-nucleon spin-independent scattering cross section expands this sensitivity further, highlighting the remarkable complementarity of jets/$…
Results of searches for SUSY production at CMS in events with third-generation signatures are presented. Along with missing energy, the final states may include hadronic jets with or without b-quark tag, light leptons, and tau leptons. These features serve both to distinguish standard-model components, and sensitivity to those SUSY models that lead to final states rich of heavy-flavored particles.
During the LHC Run-II data-taking period, several searches for supersymmetric particles were performed by the ATLAS collaboration. The results from these searches are concisely reviewed. Model-independent and model-dependent limits on new particle production are set, and interpretations in supersymmetric models are given.
I summarize the status of the inclusive SUSY searches conducted by the ATLAS and CMS experiments using the 20 fb-1 of 8 TeV LHC data in the all inclusive, 0 lepton, >=1 lepton and >=2 lepton final states. Current searches show that data are consistent with the SM. The impact of this consistency was explored on a rich variety of SUSY scenarios and simplified models, examples of which I present here.
The Atlas and CMS collaborations have both reported an excess of events in the WW\star \rightarrow \ell+\ell- + ETmiss search channel, which could be the first evidence for the Higgs boson. In the context of the MSSM, the lightest SUSY Higgs scalar h is expected to occur with mass mh = 135 GeV, depending on the range of SUSY parameters scanned over. Since the h \rightarrow WW\star branching fraction falls swiftly with decreasing mh, a signal in the WW\star channel would favor an h at the high end of its predicted mass range. We scan over general GUT scale SUSY model parameters to find those wh…
An electroweak (EW) sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with masses of a few hundred GeV can account for variety of experimental data, assuming the lightest neutralino to be the lightest supersymmetric (SUSY) particle: the non-observation at the LHC searches owing to their small production cross sections, the results for the (upper limit of the) Dark Matter (DM) relic abundance and the DM Direct Detection (DD) limits. Such a light EW sector can in particular explain the reinforced $4.2\,σ$ discrepancy between the experimental result for $(g-2)_μ$, and its Standard Model …
Highlights of the search for SUSY at ATLAS are presented emphasising on the variety of searches that were performed in the LHC Run I in p-p collisions at a centre of mass of 7 TeV and 8TeV. Searches for squars, gluinos, third generation squarks and electroweakinos in R-parity conserving scenarios and an example of searches in R-parity violating scenarios are highlighted.
A summary of the different searches for weakly produced SUSY by both CMS and ATLAS is presented here. A review on the methodology of these searches, including event selection, background suppression and estimation methods, etc is covered. Other searches at the LHC already probe squarks and gluino masses up to 1.4 TeV, such scenario, may favour electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos, that will produce many-lepton final states accompanied by E$_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}\,$ and very little hadronic activity. Latest searches include Higgs boson in the decay and exploits VBF associated produc…
We explore supersymmetry (SUSY) parameter space with non-universal high scale parameters in gravity mediated SUSY breaking (SUGRA) scenario that accommodates a Higgs mass of (125$\pm$2) GeV while satisfying cold dark matter relic density and other low energy constraints. We indicate a few benchmark points consistent with different dark matter annihilation processes where third family squarks are lighter than the first two as a requirement to keep the Higgs mass within the limit. We show that bottom rich and leptonic final states have better reach in such parameter space points and is the most …
Considerations from electroweak naturalness and stringy naturalness imply a little hierarchy in supersymmetric models where the superpotential higgsino mass parameter mu is of order the weak scale whilst the soft SUSY breaking terms may be in the (multi-) TeV range. In such a case, discovery of SUSY at LHC may be most likely in the higgsino pair production channel. Indeed, ATLAS and CMS are performing searches in the higgsino mass discovery plane of m(chi_2^0) vs. Δm^0 = m(chi_2^0)-m(chi_1^0). We examine several theoretical aspects of this discovery plane in both the gravity-mediation NUHM2 mo…
The latest results from CMS on searches for supersymmetry are presented. Searches involving all-hadronic final states with jets and missing transverse energy, and in final states including one or more isolated leptons are discussed. The results are based on 19.5/fb of LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt = 8 TeV taken with the CMS detector.
For the case of the MSSM and the most general form of the NMSSM (GNMSSM) we determine the reduction in the fine tuning that follows from allowing gaugino masses to be non-degenerate at the unification scale, taking account of the LHC8 bounds on SUSY masses, the Higgs mass bound, gauge coupling unification and the requirement of an acceptable dark matter density. We show that low-fine tuned points fall in the region of gaugino mass ratios predicted by specific unified and string models. For the case of the MSSM the minimum fine tuning is still large, approximately 1:60 allowing for a 3 GeV unce…
The $τ$ polarization can be easily measured at LHC in the 1-prong hadronic $τ$ decay channel by measuring what fraction of the $τ$-jet momentum is carried by the charged track. A simple cut requiring this fraction to be >0.8 retains most of the polarization of $τ=$+1 $τ$-jet signal while suppressing the polarization of $τ=$-1 $τ$-jet background and practically eliminating the fake $τ$ background. This can be utilized to extract the charged Higgs signal. It can be also utilized to extract the SUSY signal in the stau NLSP region, and in particular the stau co-annihilaton region.
Searches for supersymmetric partner particles of the top and bottom quarks at the Large Hadron Collider are reviewed. The focus is on the status of searches for a relatively light partner of the top quark performed by the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations. No excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed and exclusion limits are set on the masses of supersymmetric particles.
ATLAS and CMS collaborations have searched for the supersymmetry (SUSY) in different channels with 7 TeV center-of-mass energy and their search strategies are optimized for the SUSY scenarios with fairly large mass splittings among the sparticles. In absence of any significant deviation of the data from the Standard Model (SM) prediction, stringent bounds are imposed on the squarks and gluino masses in the context of different SUSY scenarios. Since the exact SUSY breaking mechanism is not known, some part of the SUSY spectrum may be degenerate. In this paper, we consider two particular cases o…
We study the implications of LHC searches on SUSY particle spectra using flat scans of the 19-parameter pMSSM phase space. We apply constraints from flavour physics, g_mu-2, dark matter and earlier LEP and Tevatron searches. The sensitivity of the LHC SUSY searches with jets, leptons and missing energy is assessed by reproducing with fast simulation the recent CMS analyses after validation on benchmark points. We present results in terms of the fraction of pMSSM points compatible with all the constraints which are excluded by the LHC searches with 1 fb^{-1} and 15 fb^{-1} as a function of the …
The first 1/fb of LHC searches have set impressive limits on new colored particles decaying to missing energy. We address the implication of these searches for naturalness in supersymmetry (SUSY). General bottom-up considerations of natural electroweak symmetry breaking show that higgsinos, stops, and the gluino should not be too far above the weak scale. The rest of the spectrum, including the squarks of the first two generations, can be heavier and beyond the current LHC reach. We have used collider simulations to determine the limits that all of the 1/fb searches pose on higgsinos, stops, a…
We investigate the phenomenological consequences of string models wherein the MSSM resides on a D-brane, and the hypercharge gaugino mass is generated in a geometrically separated hidden sector. This hypercharged anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking (HCAMSB) model naturally solves the tachyonic slepton mass problem endemic to pure AMSB scenarios. In HCAMSB, one obtains a mass ordering M_1>μ>M_2 with split left- and right- scalars, whereas in mAMSB models, one obtains μ>M_1>M_2 with nearly degenerate left- and right-scalars. We compute the allowed parameter space and expected superparticle mass spect…
We examine the ATLAS and CMS 7 & 8 TeV multijet supersymmetry (SUSY) searches requiring the incidence of a single lepton in the framework of the supersymmetric grand unified model No-Scale Flipped SU(5) with extra vector-like flippon multiplets derived from F-Theory, or F-SU(5) for short. Investigated are five multijet+lepton SUSY searches: 4.7/fb ATLAS 7 TeV gluino and light stop searches, as well as 13/fb ATLAS and 9.7/fb CMS 8 TeV light stop searches. Most significantly, all five leptonic SUSY searches represent statistically independent data samples. Findings show that all five orthogonal …
