The observation of neutrino oscillations has proven that neutrinos have mass. This is direct evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. This discovery has renewed interest in neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) experiments which provide the only practical way to determine whether neutrinos are Majorana or Dirac particles. Such experiments also have the potential to determine the absolute scale of the neutrino mass and help resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy question. The NEMO-3 (Neutrino Ettore Majorana Observatory) is currently one of the most sensitive searches for neutrinoless double beta decay. The main goal of SuperNEMO is to extend the sensitivity of the NEMO-3 search for neutrinoless double beta decay (and to measure two-neutrino double beta $2νββ$ decay). The two isotopes under consideration for SuperNEMO are $^{82}$Se and $^{150}$Nd. The target sensitivity is a $0νββ$ decay half-life at the level of $10^{26}$ years which will explore the degenerate neutrino mass hierarchy down to 50 meV.
Since 2003 the NEMO~3 experiment has been searching for neutrinoless double beta decay using about 10 kg of enriched isotopes. A limit of T_(1/2)(0nu) > 5.8 10**23 years at 90 % CL has been obtained for 100-Mo from the first two years of data. Several measurements of two-neutrino double beta decays have also been performed. A first NEMO 3 measurement of the half-life of 130-Te is presented, giving a value of T_(1/2)(2nu) = (7.6 +- 1.5 (stat) +- 0.8 (syst)) 10**20 years. In parallel, there is an active R&D programme for the SuperNEMO experiment which is expected to commence data taking in 2012-…
The SuperNEMO project aims to search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) up to a sensitivity of 10$^{26}$ years for the $0νββ$ half-life (down to $\sim$ 50~meV in the effective Majorana neutrino mass), using $\sim$100 kg of source and a `tracko-calo' detector. The current status of the 2006--2010 R\&D programme is discussed here.
The SuperNEMO experiment is being designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay to test if neutrinos are Majorana particles. The experimental technique follows that of the currently running NEMO-3 experiment, which successfully combines tracking and calorimetry to measure the topology and energy of the final state electrons. Unique particle identification capabilities of SuperNEMO will be employed with about 100 kg of 82 Se and will reach sensitivity to a half-life of about 2 x 10^26 years, which corresponds to Majorana neutrino masses of about 50 meV, depending on the calculated value…
SuperNEMO is an ultra-low-background tracker-calorimeter experiment designed to look for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of various isotopes. We present the current state of the experiment's Demonstrator Module, which is currently being installed and and commissioned in the LSM in France.
The possibility to probe new physics scenarios of light Majorana neutrino exchange and right-handed currents at the planned next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment SuperNEMO is discussed. Its ability to study different isotopes and track the outgoing electrons provides the means to discriminate different underlying mechanisms for the neutrinoless double beta decay by measuring the decay half-life and the electron angular and energy distributions.
The SuperNEMO detector will search for neutrinoless double beta decay at the Modane Underground Laboratory on the French-Italian border. This decay mode, if observed, would be proof that the neutrino is its own antiparticle, would constitute evidence for total lepton number violation, and could allow a measurement of the absolute neutrino mass. The SuperNEMO experiment is designed to reach a half-life sensitivity of $10^{26}$ years corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $50-100~$meV. The SuperNEMO detector design allows complete topological reconstruction of the double beta de…
SuperNEMO is a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment with a design capability to reach a half-life sensitivity of $10^{26}$ years corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{ββ} \rangle$ $<$ 50 - 100 meV. To achieve this sensitivity, stringent radio-purity requirements are imposed resulting in an equally stringent screening programme. Dedicated facilities have been established in the UK for screening and selection of detector construction materials. Gamma ray spectroscopy using high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors has been the standard method for t…
We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. In this article, we briefly describe our modeling approach and results of our studies.
SNO+ is a large multipurpose neutrino detector situated 2km underground at SNOLAB in Sudbury, Canada. It reuses the structure of the SNO experiment with numerous infrastructure upgrades and with heavy water replaced by ultra-pure liquid scintillator. The detector will be loaded with 0.5% natural tellurium in order to search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$). The expected sensitivity after 5 years of data taking is T$^{0ν} _{1/2} > 1.9 \times 10^{26}$ years (90% CL). A future increase in loading could achieve a sensitivity of ${\sim}10^{27}$ years.
The half-life for two-neutrino double beta decay of Nd-150 has been measured with data taken by the NEMO 3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory. The limits are also set on the half-life of different neutrinoless double beta decay of this isotope.
The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the neutrinoless $μ^- \to e^-$ conversion in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The Mu2e data-taking plan assumes two running periods, Run I and Run II, separated by an approximately two-year-long shutdown. This paper presents an estimate of the expected Mu2e Run I search sensitivity and includes a detailed discussion of the background sources, uncertainties of their prediction, analysis procedures, and the optimization of the experimental sensitivity. The expected Run I $5 σ$ discovery sensitivity is $R_{μe} = 1.2 \times 10^{-15}$, with a total e…
Liquid scintillator experiments for neutrinoless double beta decay search have high sensitivity based on the ultra low background environment and high scalability. This paper describes an overview of current ongoing projects KamLAND-Zen and SNO+.
The search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) is one of the key experiments for determining unresolved properties of neutrinos. Experimental observation of $0νββ$ would provide a clear demonstration of the Majorana nature of neutrinos and a lepton number violating process in particle physics. This report is a brief review describing the $0νββ$ process and its significance. The detector technologies used in the present and proposed $0νββ$ experiments are compared among their recent experimental results. Moreover, the sensitivities for $0νββ$ discovery in a number of present and propose…
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a promising test for lepton number violating physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. There is a deep connection between this decay and the phenomenon of neutrino masses. In particular, we will discuss the relation between neutrinoless double beta decay and Majorana neutrino masses provided by the so-called Schechter--Valle theorem in a quantitative way. Furthermore, we will present an experimental cross check to discriminate neutrinoless double beta decay from unknown nuclear background using only one isotope, i.e., within one experiment.
The search for neutrinoless double-beta decay is important in determining the Majorana nature of the neutrino, and also in establishing if lepton number is violated. In this work, we combine the published data from five independent neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments: CUORICINO, EXO, GERDA, KamLAND-Zen and NEMO-3. As these experiments use different isotope sources, the relative signal normalisation between them depends on the Nuclear Matrix Element (NME) calculations used. The combined limits for the Majorana neutrino mass for 5 different NME models range from 130-310 meV. The combined …
The search for neutrinoless double beta decay is a rich source for new physics. The observation of this decay will lead to understanding of the absolute mass scale of neutrinos, the Majorana nature of the neutrino (whether the neutrino is its own anti-particle), and lepton number violation. Double beta decay is being investigated around the world by several experiments using different candidate isotopes. There has been much progress made in experimental techniques recently such that achieving sensitivity to neutrino masses at 50 meV and below will be possible in the near future. A summary of r…
NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) is an experimental program whose goals are to discover neutrinoless double beta decay using $^{136}$Xe in high pressure xenon TPCs with electroluminescent readout. In this paper, results from the NEXT-White detector, which is currently taking data at Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC) will be reported. The prospects for the NEXT-100 apparatus, scheduled to start operations in 2020, as well as the plans to extend the technology to large and ultra-low background detectors needed to fully explore the inverse hierarchy of neutrino masses, will als…
Recent neutrino experiment results show a preference for the normal neutrino mass ordering. The global efforts to search for neutrinoless double beta decays undergo a broad gap with the approach to the prediction in the three-neutrino framework based on the normal ordering. This research is intended to show that it is possible to find a neutrinoless double beta decay signal even with normal ordered neutrino masses. We propose the existence of a light sterile neutrino as a solution to the higher effective mass of the electron neutrino expected by the current experiments. A few short-baseline os…
Combined bounds on the Majorana neutrino mass for light and heavy neutrino exchange mechanisms are derived from current neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta}) search results for a variety of nuclear matrix element (NME) models. The approach requires self-consistency of a given model to predict NMEs across different isotopes. The derived bounds are notably stronger than those from any single experiment and show less model-to-model variation, highlighting the advantages of using multiple isotopes in such searches. Projections indicate that the combination of near-term experiments shou…
Neutrinoless double decay is a unique probe for lepton number conservation and neutrino properties. It allows to investigate the Dirac/Majorana nature of the neutrinos and their absolute mass scale (hierarchy problem) with unprecedented sensitivity. A number of experiments are presently under preparation to cover the quasi-degenerate region of the neutrino mass spectrum. Improved sensitivities are however required to sound the so-called inverted hierarchy region. This is a real challenge faced by a number of new proposed projects, based either on large expansions of the present experiments or …
In some models beyond the Standard Model where lepton number violation by two units is forbidden (implying neutrinos cannot be Majorana fermions), violation by four units can still occur, allowing neutrinoless quadruple beta decay. The isotope 150-Nd is one of the very few isotopes where this process could be experimentally observed. The experimental signature consists of four electrons with a total energy equal to the Q-value of the decay. The NEMO-3 experiment in the Modane Underground Laboratory in France ran from 2003 to 2011, and studied seven isotopes of interest including 150-Nd. This a…
Neutrino mass sum rules relate the three neutrino masses within generic classes of flavour models, leading to restrictions on the effective mass parameter measured in experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay as a function of the lightest neutrino mass. We perform a comprehensive study of the implications of such neutrino mass sum rules, which provide a link between model building, phenomenology, and experiments. After a careful explanation of how to derive predictions from sum rules, we discuss a large number of examples both numerically, using all three global fits available for the neut…
The existence of light sterile neutrinos, as predicted in several models, can help to explain a number of observations starting from dark mater to recent anomalies in short baseline experiments. In this paper we consider two models - Left-Right Symmetric Zee model and Extended Seesaw model, that can naturally accommodate the presence of light sterile neutrinos in the eV to MeV mass scale. We perform a detailed study on the neutrinoless double beta decay process which receives major contributions from diagrams involving these light sterile neutrinos. Considering a number of theoretical and expe…
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a lepton number violating process whose observation would also establish that neutrinos are their own anti-particles. There are many experimental efforts with a variety of techniques. Some (EXO, Kamland-Zen, GERDA phase I and CANDLES) started take data in 2011 and EXO has reported the first measurement of the half life for the double beta decay with two neutrinos of $^{136}$Xe. The sensitivities of the different proposals are reviewed.
The PandaX-III experiment uses a high pressure xenon gas TPC to search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe. The Microbulk Micromegas will be used for charge amplification and readout in order to record both the energy and track of an event with high energy resolution and spatial resolution. In the first phase of the experiment, we are building a detector which contains 140 kg 90\% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. The detector will be installed in a dry shielding system at CJPL-II. In this paper, we wil report the design of the PandaX-III detector, including the shielding of the experiment a…
We present a framework to combine data from the latest neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments for multiple isotopes and derive a limit on the effective neutrino mass using the experimental energy distributions. The combined limits on the effective mass range between 130-310 meV, where the spread is due to different model calculations of nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). The statistical consistency (p values) between this result and the signal observation claimed by the Heidelberg-Moscow experiment is derived. The limits on the effective mass are also evaluated in a (3+1) sterile neutrino mod…
We present accurate predictions of the effective Majorana mass $|m_{ββ}|$ in neutrinoless double-$β$ decay in the standard case of $3ν$ mixing and in the case of 3+1 neutrino mixing indicated by the reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies. We have taken into account the uncertainties of the neutrino mixing parameters determined by oscillation experiments. It is shown that the predictions for $|m_{ββ}|$ in the cases of $3ν$ and 3+1 mixing are quite different, in agreement with previous discussions in the literature, and that future measurements of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and of the effective …
A correction of the neutrinoless 2\b{eta}-decay model was proposed which predicted a shift of the 2\b{eta}0ν-signal from the Q value (2\b{eta}-decay energy). The shifts were calculated for 76Ge (\D{elta}E=-2.6 keV), 100Mo (\D{elta}E=-4.7 keV), 130Te (\D{elta}E=-3.7 keV). The calculations for 76Ge were in agreement with H-M results. A reanalysis of the published Quoricino data (a search for a 2\b{eta}0ν-decay of 130Te) was performed. It indicated a presence of a signal at E = 2523.5 keV \a{pprox} Q(130Te)-3.7 keV. It could be attributed to the 130Te neutrinoless 2\b{eta}-decay with T1/2 = (5.7+…
Motivated by recent intensive experimental efforts on searching for neutrinoless double-beta decays, we perform a detailed analysis of the physics potential of the experiments based on $^{76}\mathrm{Ge}$. Assuming no signals, current and future experiments could place a $90\%$ lower limit on the half life $T^{0ν}_{1/2} \gtrsim 4\times 10^{26}~{\rm yr}$ and $T^{0ν}_{1/2} \gtrsim 7\times 10^{27}~{\rm yr}$, respectively. Then, how to report an evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decays is addressed by following the Bayesian statistical approach. For the first time, we present a quantitative des…
Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0$νββ$) decay is a hypothetical process that violates lepton number, and whose observation would unambiguously indicate that neutrinos are Majorana fermions. In the standard inverted-ordering neutrino mass scenario, the minimum possible value of mbb corresponds to a half-life around 10$^{28}$ yr for 0$νββ$ decay in $^{76}$Ge, which is the target of the next generation of experiments. The current limits of GERDA and MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR indicate a half-life higher than 10$^{26}$ yr. These experiments use high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors that are highly enr…
In the Standard Model the total lepton number is conserved. Thus, neutrinoless double-beta decay, in which the total lepton number is violated by two units, is a probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this review we consider the basic mechanism of neutrinoless double-beta decay induced by light Majorana neutrino masses. After a brief summary of the present status of our knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing and an introduction to the seesaw mechanism for the generation of light Majorana neutrino masses, in this review we discuss the theory and phenomenology of neutrinoless double-bet…
The search for neutrinoless double beta decay probes lepton number conservation with high sensitivity and investigates the neutrino nature and mass scale. Experiments presently in preparation will cover the quasi-degeneracy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Probing the so-called inverted hierarchy region requires improved sensitivities and next-generation experiments, based either on large expansions of the present searches or on new ideas. We examine here the potential of a novel technology relying on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers, which can provide an experiment with background close to…
In this paper, we emphasize why it is important for future neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay experiments to reach the sensitivity to the effective neutrino mass $|m^{}_{ββ}| \approx 1~{\rm meV}$. Assuming such a sensitivity and the precisions on neutrino oscillation parameters after the JUNO experiment, we fully explore the constrained regions of the lightest neutrino mass $m^{}_1$ and two Majorana-type CP-violating phases $\{ρ, σ\}$. The implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the effective neutrino mass $m^{}_β$ in beta decays and the sum of three neutrino masses $Σ\equiv m^{}_1 +…
We discuss the contribution of right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) to the effective neutrino mass of the neutrinoless double beta decay within the minimal type-I seesaw model using the intrinsic seesaw relation of neutrino mass and mixing parameters and the relative mass dependence of the nuclear matrix elements. In the viable parameter space, we find the possibilities of both the enhancement and cancellation to the effective neutrino mass from RHNs. The bounds on the parameter space of the RHNs can be determined with the effective neutrino mass extracted from neutrinoless double beta decay experime…
In this brief review we discuss the generation of Majorana neutrino masses through the see-saw mechanism, the theory of neutrinoless double-beta decay, the implications of neutrino oscillation data for the effective Majorana mass, taking into account the recent Daya Bay measurement of theta_13, and the interpretation of the results of neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments.
Experiments in progress may confirm a nonzero neutrinoless double beta decay rate in conflict with the cosmological upper limit on neutrino masses and thus require new physics beyond the Standard Model. A natural candidate is the Left-Right symmetric theory, which led originally to neutrino mass and the seesaw mechanism. In the absence of cancelations of large Dirac Yukawa couplings, we show how such a scenario would require a low scale of Left-Right symmetry breaking roughly below 10 TeV, tantalizingly close to the LHC reach.
We evaluate the discovery probability of a combined analysis of proposed neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments in a scenario with normal ordered neutrino masses. The discovery probability strongly depends on the value of the lightest neutrino mass, ranging from zero in case of vanishing masses and up to 80-90\% for values just below the current constraints. We study the discovery probability in different scenarios, focusing on the exciting prospect in which cosmological surveys will measure the sum of neutrino masses. Uncertainties in nuclear matrix element calculations partially compensa…
The SNO+ experiment, located in SNOLAB, 2 kilometers underground in the Creighton mine, near Sudbury, Canada, is a large scale neutrino detector whose main purpose is to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay and thus probe the Majorana nature of the neutrino. With 780 tons of liquid scintillator loaded with tellurium, SNO+ aims at exploring the Majorana neutrino mass parameter space down to the inverted mass hierarchy region. The versatility of the SNO+ detector also allows it to detect solar and reactor neutrinos, provide a measurement of the geoneutrino flux, detect galactic core-collaps…
The search for neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay is the best way to test lepton number violation and Majorana nature of neutrinos. One of the most promising techniques to discover $0νββ$ decay is by operating High-Purity Ge detectors enriched in $^{76}$Ge. The current generation of $^{76}$Ge experiments, GERDA and MAJORANA, lead the field in the achieved energy resolution and ultra-low background. These are two of the most important characteristics for sensitive searches of this undiscovered decay. The next generation of $0νββ$ decay experiments requires more mass and further reduction o…
The Bayesian discovery probability of future experiments searching for neutrinoless double-$β$ decay is evaluated under the popular assumption that neutrinos are their own antiparticles. A Bayesian global fit is performed to construct a probability distribution for the effective Majorana mass, the observable of interest for these experiments. This probability distribution is then combined with the sensitivity of each experiment derived from a heuristic counting analysis. The discovery probability is found to be higher than previously considered, but strongly depends on whether the neutrino mas…
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothetical, very slow nuclear transition in which two neutrons undergo beta decay simultaneously and without the emission of neutrinos. The importance of this process goes beyond its intrinsic interest: an unambiguous observation would establish a Majorana nature for the neutrino and prove the violation of lepton number. NEXT is a new experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a radiopure high-pressure xenon gas TPC, filled with 100 kg of Xe enriched in Xe-136. NEXT will be the first large high-pressure gas TPC to use electroluminescence…
We consider perturbative one loop QCD corrections to the light neutrino contribution to neutrinoless double beta decay and find large enhancement to the rate. QCD corrections also generate structures which mimic new physics contributions usually considered. Within some approximations, the net effect seem to almost saturate the experimental limits, and therefore seems to implt that this is all there is to neutrinoless double beta decay.
Neutrinoless double beta decay is the only process known so far able to test the neutrino intrinsic nature: its experimental observation would imply that the lepton number is violated by two units and prove that neutrinos have a Majorana mass components, being their own anti-particle. While several experiments searching for such a rare decay have been performed in the past, a new generation of experiments using different isotopes and techniques have recently released their results or are taking data and will provide new limits, should no signal be observed, in the next few years to come. The p…
