We calculate the in-medium $D$ and $\bar D$-meson masses in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in an effective chiral model. The $D$ and $\bar D$ - mass modifications arising from their interactions with the nucleons and the scalar mesons in the effective hadronic model are seen to be appreciable at high densities and have a strong isospin dependence. These mass modifications can open the channels of the decay of the charmonium states ($Ψ^\prime$, $χ_c$, $J/Ψ$) to $D \bar D$ pairs in the dense hadronic matter. The isospin asymmetry in the doublet $D=(D^0,D^+)$ is seen to be particularly appreciable at high densities and should show in observables like their production and flow in asymmetric heavy ion collisions in the compressed baryonic matter experiments in the future facility of FAIR, GSI. The results of the present work are compared to calculations of the $D(\bar D$) in-medium masses in the literature using the QCD sum rule approach, quark meson coupling model, coupled channel approach as well as from the studies of quarkonium dissociation using heavy quark potentials from lattice QCD at finite temperatures.
We calculate dispersion relations and propagators for the $σ$, $ω$, $ρ$ and $δ$ mesons in relativistic nuclear matter with a proton-neutron asymmetry. In addition to the $σ$-$ω$ and $δ$-$ρ$ mixings already present in symmetric matter, mixing occur between all components of the $σ$-$ω$-$δ$-$ρ$ system when the proton fraction differs from 1/2.
In the present work we include the isovector-scalar $δ$-meson in the quark-meson coupling model (QMC) and study the properties of asymmetric nuclear within QMC without and with the $δ$-meson. Recent constraints set by isospin diffusion on the slope parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density are used to adjust the model parameters. The thermodynamical spinodal surfaces are obtained and the instability region at subsaturation densities within QMC and QMC$δ$ models are compared with mean-field relativistic models. The distillation effect in the QMC model is discussed.
We study the in-medium properties of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons in isospin asymmetric hyperonic matter arising due to their interactions with the light hadrons. The interactions of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons with these light hadrons are derived by generalizing the chiral SU(3) model used for the study of hyperonic matter to SU(4). The nucleons, the scalar isoscalar meson, $σ$ and the scalar-isovector meson, $δ$ as modified in the strange hadronic matter, modify the masses of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons. It is found that as compared to the $\bar{D}$ mesons, the $D$ meson properties are more sensitive …
In this work we study the warm equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter in the quark meson coupling model which incorporates explicitly quark degrees of freedom, with quarks coupled to scalar, vector and isovector mesons. Mechanical and chemical instabilities are discussed as a function of density and isospin asymmetry. The binodal section, essential in the study of the liquid-gas phase transition is also constructed and discussed. The main results for the equation of state are compared with two common parametrizations used in the non-linear Walecka model and the differences are outlined…
The properties of vector mesons in nuclear matter are discussed. I examine the constraints imposed by elementary processes on the widths of $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons in nuclear matter. Furthermore, results for the $ρ$- and $ω$-nucleon scattering amplitudes obtained by fitting meson-nucleon scattering data in a coupled-channel approach are presented.
We study the propagation of the light mesons sigma, omega, rho, and a0(980) in dense hadronic matter in an extended derivative scalar coupling model. Within the scheme proposed it is possible to unambiguously define effective density-dependent couplings at the Lagrangian level. We first apply the model to study asymmetric nuclear matter with fixed isospin asymmetry, and then we pay particular attention to hypermatter in beta-equilibrium. The equation of state and the potential contribution to the symmetry coefficient arising from the mean field approximation are investigated.
We employ meson-nucleon scattering data to deduce the properties of the low-mass vector mesons in nuclear matter, and present results for the $ρ$ and $ω$ in-medium spectral functions. The corresponding thermal emission rate for lepton pairs is also discussed.
We study a spectral function for $\bar{D}_0^*$ $(0^+)$ meson in symmetric and neutron-rich asymmetric nuclear matter from the viewpoint of the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Nuclear matter is constructed by a parity doublet model with hidden local symmetry which can reproduce properties at normal nuclear matter density as well as those in the vacuum. $\bar{D}$ mesons are introduced by the chiral partner structure. Our results show that a mass of $\bar{D}$ ($0^-$) meson increases while a mass of $\bar{D}_0^*$ meson decreases at mean field level as we increase the baryon density, reflec…
An extended version of the non linear Walecka model, with rho mesons and eletromagnetic field is used to investigate the possibility of phase transitions in hot (warm) nuclear matter, giving rise to droplet formation. Surface properties of asymmetric nuclear matter as the droplet surface energy and its thickness are also examined.
The behavior of pseudoscalar mesons in nuclear medium is reviewed with an emphasis on the possibility of their Bose-Einstein condensation in dense matter. In particular pion condensation is reexamined in detail, stimulated by recent theoretical and observational developments.
We review the current status of our microscopic calculations in asymmetric nuclear matter. Updated predictions of the equation of state are made available to potential users. We discuss the features of our EoS in relation to the predicted neutron star maximum masses.
In this paper we present a phenomenological treatment of charm quark energy loss before fragmenting into D mesons and calculate nuclear modification factor, '$R_{AA}$' and azimuthal anisotropy, '$v_2$' of D mesons for lead on lead collision at LHC energy of $\sqrt{s}$=2.76 A TeV.
Masses of hadrons (baryons as well as mesons) are modified in the nuclear medium because of their interactions. In this paper we investigate the effect of in-medium meson masses on the properties of the nuclear matter. The calculations are performed in the Walecka model. We find that with the inclusion of meson mass modification, the computed equation of state becomes softer. We also find that the decrease in the nucleon as well as meson masses in the medium is smaller than that obtained in the case when the in-medium meson masses are not taken into account.
A new improved quark mass density-dependent model including u, d quarks, $σ$ mesons, $ω$ mesons and $ρ$ mesons is presented. Employing this model, the properties of nuclear matter, neutron matter and neutron star are studied. We find that it can describe above properties successfully. The results given by the new improved quark mass density- dependent model and by the quark meson coupling model are compared.
We suggest the new experimental method to explore the properties of slow strange mesons at normal nuclear matter density. We show that the $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ mesons with extremely small momenta relative to the surrounding medium rest frame can be produced in nucleus-nucleon collisions and their production cross sections are experimentally measurable. The experiments on study of the momentum dependence of meson-nuclear potentials are discussed.
Employing QCD sum rules the in-medium modifications of scalar charm mesons in a cold nuclear matter environment are estimated. The mass splitting of D*-D*-bar is quantified.
Asymmetric nuclear matter is studied in the frame of relativistic mean-field theory, using scalar-isoscalar sigma, vector-isoscalar omega meson together with their selfinteractions, vector-isovector rho meson with its cross-interaction with omega meson too, and scalar-isovector delta meson as degrees of freedom. The model is used to parameterize the nuclear matter properties results calculated by more fundamental Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory and thus to provide an effective DBHF model applicable also to finite nuclei. Vector omega-rho cross-interaction seems to be an useful degree of fr…
The non-resonant (seagull) contribution to the nuclear Compton amplitude at low energies is strongly influenced by nucleon correlations arising from meson exchange. We study this problem in a modified Fermi gas model, where nuclear correlation functions are obtained with the help of perturbation theory. The dependence of the mesonic seagull amplitude on the nuclear radius is investigated and the influence of a realistic nuclear density on this amplitude is dicussed. We found that different form factors appear for the static part (proportional to the enhancement constant $κ$) of the mesonic sea…
We discuss an asymmetry of the decay $ω->e^+e^-$ in nuclear matter with respect to the electron and positron energies. This asymmetry is sensitive to the properties of the $ω$ meson self-energy and, in particular, it has a non-trivial dependence on the $ω$ energy and momentum. Therefore, this asymmetry may serve as a powerful tool in studying the properties of the $ω$ meson in the nuclear medium.
The spectral function of protons in the asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated in the self-consistent T-matrix approach. The spectral function per proton increases with increasing asymmetry. This effect and the density dependence of the spectral function partially explain the observed increase of the spectral function with the mass number of the target nuclei in electron scattering experiments.
After giving brief discussions on the chiral condensate in hot and/or dense hadronic matter and the significance of the $σ$ meson in QCD, we discuss the importance of experiments using nuclear targets including ones with electro-magnetic probes for obtaining clearer confirmation of the existence of the $σ$ meson and for exploring the possible restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.
A microscopic calculation of the equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter is presented. We employ realistic nucleon-nucleon forces and operate within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach to nuclear matter. The focal point of this paper is a (momentum-space) G-matrix which properly accounts for the asymmetry between protons and neutrons. This will merge naturally into the development of an effective interaction suitable for applications to asymmetric nuclei, which will be the object of extensive study in the future.
The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model for nuclear matter, which describes nuclear matter as non-overlapping MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons is modified by the introduction of a density dependent bag constant. It is found that when the bag constant is significantly reduced in nuclear medium with respect to its free space value, large canceling isoscalar Lorentz scalar and vector potentials for the nucleon in nuclear matter emerge naturally. Such potentials are comparable to those suggested by relativistic nuclear phenomenology. This suggests that the mo…
Using the relativistic impulse approximation with empirical NN scattering amplitude and the nuclear scalar and vector densities from the relativistic mean-field theory, we evaluate the Dirac optical potential for neutrons and protons in asymmetric nuclear matter. From the resulting Schrö% dinger-equivalent potential, the high energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential is studied. We find that the symmetry potential at fixed baryon density is essentially constant once the nucleon kinetic energy is greater than about 500 MeV. Moreover, for such high energy nucleon, the symmetry potential …
We investigate properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in isospin-asymmetric nuclear medium, using a self-consistent, covariant scheme based on vacuum antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitude.
We study the properties of the kappa meson in the nuclear medium, starting from a chiral unitary model of S-wave, I=1/2 K-pi scattering, which describes the elastic K-pi phase shifts and generates a pole in the amplitude. Medium effects are considered by including pion and kaon selfenergies. We explore the changes in the kappa pole position and in the K-pi scattering amplitude at finite density, with two different models for the kaon selfenergy.
In this work, propagation properties of the rho meson in symmetric nuclear matter are studied. We make use of a coupled channel unitary approach to meson-meson scattering, calculated from the lowest order Chiral Perturbation Theory lagrangian including explicit resonance fields. Low energy chiral constraints are considered by matching our expressions to those of one loop Ch.P.T. To account for the medium corrections, the rho couples to pion-pion and kaon-antikaon pairs which are properly renormalized in the nuclear medium.
A system of nontopological solitons interacting through scalar and vector meson exchange is used to model nuclear matter. The models studied are of the Friedberg-Lee type, which exhibit dynamical bag formation due to the coupling of quarks to a scalar composite gluon field. It is shown that the chiral chromodielectric model gives the best fit to the empirical data. The presence of the scalar meson guarantees saturation and an increase of the proton charge radius with nuclear density consistent with the EMC effect.
We calculate the effect of many-body interactions in nuclear matter on the spectral function of $ρ$ and $ω$ meson. In particular, we focus on the role played by baryon resonances in this context.
The giant collective modes in asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated within a dynamic relaxation time approximation. We derive a coupled dispersion relation and show that two sources of coupling appear: (i) a coupling of isoscalar and isovector modes due to different mean-fields acting and (ii) an explicit new coupling in asymmetric matter due to collisional interaction. We show that the latter one is responsible for a new mode arising besides isovector and isoscalar modes.
As an extension of our previous work, the growth of density fluctuations in the spinodal region of charge asymmetric nuclear matter is investigated in the basis of the stochastic mean-field approach in the non-relativistic framework. A complete treatment of density correlation functions are presented by including collective modes and non-collective modes as well.
We have studied the influences of isospin symmetry breaking of nucleon-nucleon interaction on the various properties of asymmetrical nuclear matter and $β$-stable matter. For asymmetrical nuclear matter, it is found that by including this isospin symmetry breaking, the changes of bulk properties increase by increasing both density and asymmetry parameter. However, these effects on the total energy and equation of state of $β$-stable matter are ignorable. For asymmetrical nuclear matter, the validity of the empirical parabolic law in the isospin symmetry breaking case is shown. It is observed t…
The neutron and proton single-particle spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter fulfill energy weighted sum rules. The validity of these sum rules within the self-consistent Green's function approach is investigated. The various contributions to these sum rules and their convergence as a function of energy provide information about correlations induced by the realistic interaction between the nucleons. These features are studied as a function of the asymmetry of nuclear matter.
We calculate the nucleon parameters in isospin symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter using the QCD sum rules. The higher moments of the nucleon structure functions are included. The complete set of the nucleon expectation values of the four-quark operators is employed. We analyze the role of the lowest order radiative corrections beyond the logarithmic approximation.
We investigate the equation of state (EOS) for nuclear matter, within the framework of the Relativistic Hartree Fock (RHF) theory, with special emphasis on the role of the Pauli coupling of the vector meson $ρ$ to the nucleon vis-a-vis the eventual softening of the EOS as revealed through a substantial reduction of the incompressibility parameter ($K_0$) for symmetric nuclear matter.
The theory of nuclear structure (binding, low energy spectra, transitions, etc.) depends on nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. The meson theory of NN interactions has predictive power for NN scattering, and partial success when applied to the theory of nuclear structure. Is it possible to test this theoretical picture -- by direct experimental interaction with mesons in nuclei? Some experimental searches for the `pion excess' in nuclei have ambiguous results. How sensitive are such experiments to the mesonic aspects of nuclear structure? These questions are addressed in this talk. More details…
The liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter is investigated within relativistic mean-field model using the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy constrained from the measured neutron skin thickness of finite nuclei. We find symmetry energy has a significant influence on several features of liquid-gas phase transition. The boundary and area of the liquid-gas coexistence region, the maximal isospin asymmetry and the critical values of pressure and isospin asymmetry all of which systematically increase with increasing softness in the density dependence of symmetry ene…
The bosonic excitations induced by the omega meson propagation in dense nuclear matter is studied within the framework of random phase approximation. The collective modes are then analyzed by finding the zeros of the relevant dielectric functions. Subsequently we present closed form analytical expressions for the dispersion relations in different kinematical regime. Next, the analytical behaviour of the in-medium effective propagator for the omega meson is examined. This is exploited to calculate the full spectral function for the transverse (T) and longitudinal (L) mode of the omega meson. In…
The $ϕ$ meson spectrum, which in vacuum is dominated by its coupling to the $\bar{K} K$ system, is modified in nuclear matter. Following a model based on chiral SU(3) dynamics we calculate the $ϕ$ meson selfenergy in nuclear matter considering the $K$ and $\bar{K}$ in-medium properties. For the latter we use the results of previous calculations which account for $S-$ and $P-$wave kaon-nucleon interactions based on the lowest order meson-baryon chiral effective Lagrangian, and this leads to a dressing of the kaon propagators in the medium. In addition, a set of vertex corrections is evaluated t…
We use a chiral SU(3) quark mean field model to study the properties of nuclear systems at finite temperature. The liquid-gas phase transition of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter is discussed. For two formulations of the model the critical temperature, $T_c$, for symmetric nuclear matter is found to be 15.8 MeV and 17.9 MeV. These values are consistent with those derived from recent experiments. The limiting temperatures for finite nuclei are in good agreement with the experimental points.
The off-shell behavior of the nucleon self-energy in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is investigated within the framework of relativistic Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach based on projection techniques. The dependence of the Dirac components of the self-energy on momentum as well as energy is evaluated for symmetric as well as asymmetric nuclear matter. Special attention is paid to the various contributions to the momentum dependence of the real and imaginary part of the optical potential. The consequences to the different definitions of the effective nucleon mass and particle spectral …
The Debye screening masses of the $σ$, $ω$ and neutral $ρ$ mesons and the photon are calculated in the relativistic mean-field approximation. As the density of the nucleon increases, all the screening masses of mesons increase. It shows a different result with Brown-Rho scaling, which implies a reduction in the mass of all the mesons in the nuclear matter except the pion. Replacing the masses of the mesons with their corresponding screening masses in Walecka-1 model, five saturation properties of the nuclear matter are fixed reasonably, and then a density-dependent relativistic mean-field mode…
We discuss a self-consistent method to calculate the properties of cold asymmetric nuclear matter which is dressed with isoscalar scalar pion condensates. The nucleon-nucleon interaction is mediated by these pion pairs, omega- and rho- mesons. The parameters of these interactions are evaluated self-consistently using the saturation properties of nuclear matter like binding energy, pressure, compressibility and symmetry energy. The computed equation of state of pure neutron matter (PNM) is used to calculate mass and radius of a pure neutron star.
We study in further detail a nontopological soliton model with coupling between quarks and mesons selected as promising in the previous work. Here we go beyond the Wigner-Seitz approximation by introducing the disorder necessary to reproduce the liquid state. We study nuclear matter, with particular interest in the transition to a quark-gluon plasma. The model studied is a variation of the chiral chromodielectric model of Fai, Perry and Wilets, where explicit coupling to a scalar meson field is introduced.
The recent progress on the study of the collective excitation in relativistic nuclear matter is reviewed. The collective excitation modes are derived by meson propagators in nuclear matter. The mesons we study are $σ, ω, γ$ and $π$ mesons. For pion, we derived not only the relativistic particle - hole, delta - hole excitations but also antiparticle excitations, such as particle - antiparticle, antidelta - particle, delta - antiparticle excitations. By calculating the dispersion relation and the spin - isospin dependent response function, the effects of all these excitation are studied.
Dynamical correlations in asymmetric infinite nuclear matter are investigates in a transport theoretical approach. Self-energies due to short range correlations and their influence on the nucleon spectral functions are described in an approach accounting for a realistic treatment of mean-field dynamics and a self-consistently derived quasi-particle interaction. Landau-Migdal theory is used to derived the short range interaction from a phenomenological Skyrme energy density functional. The spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter are found to follow in their gross features closely the pa…
Three body effects are studied for both asymmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter to calculate the nuclear Equation of State . The Brueckner Hartree Fock approximation is used using CD Bonn B and Argonne V18 potentials. A two body density dependent Skyrme potential is added to reproduce the empirical saturation point. Good agreement is obtained in comparison with exact calculation including three body forces.
Quantal effects on growth of spinodal instabilities in charge asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated in the framework of a stochastic mean field approach. Due to quantal effects, in both symmetric and asymmetric matter, dominant unstable modes shift towards longer wavelengths and modes with wave numbers larger than the Fermi momentum are strongly suppressed. As a result of quantum statistical effects, in particular at lower temperatures, magnitude of density fluctuations grows larger than those calculated in semi-classical approximation.
The phase diagram of nuclear matter is quite rich - it shows such phenomena as phase-transitions, formation of condensates, clustering, etc. From the analysis of the spinodal instability, one can learn about the region of liquid-gas coexistence in nuclear matter at low densities and finite isospin asymmetries. In a recent paper, we have shown that asymmetric nuclear matter at sub-nuclear densities should undergo only one type of instability. The associated order parameter is dominated by the isoscalar density and so the transition is of liquid-gas type. The instability goes in the direction of…
The density and temperature dependence of the nuclear symmetry free energy is investigated using microscopic two- and three-body nuclear potentials constructed from chiral effective field theory. The nuclear force models and many-body methods are benchmarked to properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the vicinity of the saturation density as well as the virial expansion of the neutron matter equation of state at low fugacities. The free energy per particle of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated assuming a quadratic dependence of the interaction contributions on the isospi…
The hadronic properties of the $ρ$ meson produced in the inclusive photonuclear reaction have been investigated. The elementary reaction occurring in the nucleus is assumed as $γN \to ρ^0 N$. The $ρ$ meson, while propagating through the nucleus, interacts with the nuclear particles, and therefore, the properties of the $ρ$ meson can be modified because of this interaction. Being a short-lived particle, the $ρ$ meson decays to various elementary particles, such as, $e^+e^-$, $π^+π^-$, .... etc. The $e^+e^-$ invariant mass, i.e., the $ρ$ meson mass, distribution spectra have been calculated to e…
We calculate the mean free path of protons and neutrons in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter, based on microscopic in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. Those are obtained from calculations of the G-matrix including relativistic "Dirac" effects. The dependence of the mean free path on energy and isospin asymmetry is discussed. We conclude by suggesting possible ways our microscopic predictions may be helpful in conjunction with studies of rare isotopes.
The thermal properties of asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated in a relativistic mean- field approach. We start from free space NN-interactions and derive in-medium self-energies by Dirac-Brueckner theory. By the DDRH procedure we derive in a self-consistent approach density- dependent meson-baryon vertices. At the mean-field level, we include isoscalar and isovector scalar and vector interactions. The nuclear equation of state is investigated for a large range of total baryon densities up to the neutron star regime, the full range of asymmetries from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neu…
We investigate the modification of meson spectral densities in dense nuclear matter at zero temperature. These effects are studied in a fully relativistic mean field model which goes beyond the linear density approximation and also includes baryon resonances. In particular, the role of N*(1520) and N*(1720) on the rho meson spectral density is highlighted. Even though the nucleon-nucleon loop and the nucleon-resonance loop contribute with the opposite sign, an overall reduction of rho meson mass is still observed at high density. Importantly, it is shown that the resonances cause substantial b…
