Carlitz proved that, for any prime power q other than 2, the group of all permutations of the finite field F_q is generated by the permutations induced by degree-one polynomials and x^{q-2}. His proof relies on a remarkable polynomial which appears to have been found by magic. We show here that no magic is required: there is a straightforward way to produce a simple polynomial which has the same remarkable properties as the complicated polynomial in Carlitz's proof. We also identify the crucial subtlety which allows such simple polynomials to exist, and discuss some consequences.

Generalization of a Theorem of Carlitz

We generalize Carlitz' result on the number of self reciprocal monic irreducible polynomials over finite fields by showing that similar explicit formula hold for the number of irreducible polynomials obtained by a fixed quadratic transformation. Our main tools are a combinatorial argument and Hurwitz genus formula.

A note on the Brawley-Carlitz theorem on irreducibility of composed products of polynomials over finite fields

We give a new proof of the Brawley-Carlitz theorem on irreducibility of the composed products of irreducible polynomials. Our proof shows that associativity of the binary operation for the composed product is not necessary. We then investigate binary operations defined by polynomial functions, and give a sufficient condition in terms of degrees for the requirement in the Brawley-Carlitz theorem.

A Carlitz module analogue of the Grunwald--Wang theorem

The classical Grunwald--Wang theorem is an example of a local--global (or Hasse) principle stating that except in some special cases which are precisely determined, an element $m$ in a number field $\mathbb{K}$ is an $a$-th power in $\mathbb{K}$ if and only if it is an $a$-th power in the completion $\mathbb{K}_{v}$ for all but finitely many primes $v$ of $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we prove a Carlitz module analogue of the Grunwald--Wang theorem.

$q$-Analogues of $π$-Series by Applying Carlitz Inversions to $q$-Pfaff-Saalsch{ü}tz Theorem

By applying multiplicate forms of the Carlitz inverse series relations to the $q$-Pfaff-Saalsch{ü}tz summation theorem, we establish twenty five nonterminating $q$-series identities with several of them serving as $q$-analogues of infinite series expressions for $π$ and $1/π$, including some typical ones discovered by Ramanujan (1914) and Guillera.

Dedekind-Carlitz Polynomials as Lattice-Point Enumerators in Rational Polyhedra

We study higher-dimensional analogs of the Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials c(u,v;a,b) := sum_{k=1..b-1} u^[ka/b] v^(k-1), where u and v are indeterminates and a and b are positive integers. Carlitz proved that these polynomials satisfy the reciprocity law (v-1) c(u,v;a,b) + (u-1) c(v,u;b,a) = u^(a-1) v^(b-1) - 1, from which one easily deduces many classical reciprocity theorems for the Dedekind sum and its generalizations. A Carlitz-von Staudt type theorem for finite rings

We compute the $k$th power-sums (for all $k>0$) over an arbitrary finite unital ring $R$. This unifies and extends the work of Brawley, Carlitz, and Levine for matrix rings [Duke Math. Computation of the Galois groups occuring in M. Papanikolas's study of Carlitz logarithms

In this note, we state a theorem of compution of the unipotent radical of the Galois group of an object $U$ of a tannakian category defined over a field of positive characteristic, extension of the unit object by a semi-simple one. We then give a criteria of algebricity of solutions of the objects in terms of linear dependences in groups of extension. We apply these results to the tanakian framework of $t$-motives developped by M. Papanikolas; in particular, we give an alternative proof of the algebraic independence of Carlitz logarithms.

Connecting two types of representations of a permutation of $\F_q$

In this paper, we connect two types of representations of a permutation $σ$ of the finite field $\F_q$. One type is algebraic, in which the permutation is represented as the composition of degree-one polynomials and $k$ copies of $x^{q-2}$, for some prescribed value of $k$.
