This article presents new bijections on planar maps. At first a bijection is established between bipolar orientations on planar maps and specific "transversal structures" on triangulations of the 4-gon with no separating 3-cycle, which are called irreducible triangulations. This bijection specializes to a bijection between rooted non-separable maps and rooted irreducible triangulations. This yields in turn a bijection between rooted loopless maps and rooted triangulations, based on the observation that loopless maps and triangulations are decomposed in a similar way into components that are respectively non-separable maps and irreducible triangulations. This gives another bijective proof (after Wormald's construction published in 1980) of the fact that rooted loopless maps with $n$ edges are equinumerous to rooted triangulations with $n$ inner vertices.
In 2006, Chapoton defined a class of Tamari intervals called "new intervals" in his enumeration of Tamari intervals, and he found that these new intervals are equi-enumerated with bipartite planar maps. We present here a direct bijection between these two classes of objects using a new object called "degree tree". Our bijection also gives an intuitive proof of an unpublished equi-distribution result of some statistics on new intervals given by Chapoton and Fusy.
A bijection $Φ$ is presented between plane bipolar orientations with prescribed numbers of vertices and faces, and non-intersecting triples of upright lattice paths with prescribed extremities. This yields a combinatorial proof of the following formula due to R. Baxter for the number $Θ_{ij}$ of plane bipolar orientations with $i$ non-polar vertices and $j$ inner faces: $Θ_{ij}=2\frac{(i+j)!(i+j+1)!(i+j+2)!}{i!(i+1)!(i+2)!j!(j+1)!(j+2)!}$. In addition, it is shown that $Φ$ specializes into the bijection of Bernardi and Bonichon between Schnyder woods and non-crossing pairs of Dyck words.
This article presents a unified bijective scheme between planar maps and blossoming trees, where a blossoming tree is defined as a spanning tree of the map decorated with some dangling half-edges that enable to reconstruct its faces. Our method generalizes a previous construction of Bernardi by loosening its conditions of applications so as to include annular maps, that is maps embedded in the plane with a root face different from the outer face. The bijective construction presented here relies deeply on the theory of α-orientations introduced by Felsner, and in particular on the existence of …
We consider planar maps with three boundaries, colloquially called pairs of pants. In the case of bipartite maps with controlled face degrees, a simple expression for their generating function was found by Eynard and proved bijectively by Collet and Fusy. In this paper, we obtain an even simpler formula for \emph{tight} pairs of pants, namely for maps whose boundaries have minimal length in their homotopy class. We follow a bijective approach based on the slice decomposition, which we extend by introducing new fundamental building blocks called bigeodesic triangles and diangles, and by working…
The number of tree-rooted maps, that is, rooted planar maps with a distinguished spanning tree, of size $n$ is C(n)C(n+1) where C(n)=binomial(2n,n)/(n+1) is the nth Catalan number. We present a (long awaited) simple bijection which explains this result. We prove that our bijection is isomorphic to a former recursive construction on shuffles of parenthesis systems due to Cori, Dulucq and Viennot.
The chromatic polynomial and its generalization, the chromatic symmetric function, are two important graph invariants. Celebrated theorems of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Stanley show how both objects can be expressed in three different ways: as sums over all spanning subgraphs, as sums over spanning subgraphs with no broken circuits, and in terms of acyclic orientations with compatible colorings. We establish all six of these expressions bijectively. In fact, we do this with only two bijections, as the proofs in the symmetric function setting are obtained using the same bijections as in the polynom…
We present a general bijective approach to planar hypermaps with two main results. First we obtain unified bijections for all classes of maps or hypermaps defined by face-degree constraints and girth constraints. To any such class we associate bijectively a class of plane trees characterized by local constraints. This unifies and greatly generalizes several bijections for maps and hypermaps. Second, we present yet another level of generalization of the bijective approach by considering classes of maps with non-uniform girth constraints. More precisely, we consider "well-charged maps", which ar…
We deal with the asymptotic enumeration of combinatorial structures on planar maps. Prominent instances of such problems are the enumeration of spanning trees, bipartite perfect matchings, and ice models. The notion of orientations with out-degrees prescribed by a function $å:V\to \NN$ unifies many different combinatorial structures, including the afore mentioned. We call these orientations $å$-orientations. The main focus of this paper are bounds for the maximum number of $å$-orientations that a planar map with $n$ vertices can have, for different instances of $å$. We give examples of triangu…
We present a direct bijection between planar 3-connected triangulations and bridgeless planar maps, which were first enumerated by Tutte (1962) and Walsh and Lehman (1975) respectively. Previously known bijections by Wormald (1980) and Fusy (2010) are all defined recursively. Our direct bijection passes by a new class of combinatorial objects called "sticky trees". We also present bijections between sticky trees, intervals in the Tamari lattices and closed flows on forests. With our bijections, we recover several known enumerative results about these objects. We thus show that sticky trees can…
We present recent results on the enumeration of $q$-coloured planar maps, where each monochromatic edge carries a weight $ν$. This is equivalent to weighting each map by its Tutte polynomial, or to solving the $q$-state Potts model on random planar maps. The associated generating function, obtained by Olivier Bernardi and the author, is differentially algebraic. That is, it satisfies a (non-linear) differential equation. The starting point of this result is a functional equation written by Tutte in 1971, which translates into enumerative terms a simple recursive description of planar maps. The…
We present bijections for the planar cases of two counting formulas on maps that arise from the KP hierarchy (Goulden-Jackson and Carrell-Chapuy formulas), relying on a "cut-and-slide" operation. This is the first time a bijective proof is given for quadratic map-counting formulas derived from the KP hierarchy. Up to now, only the linear one-faced case was known (Harer-Zagier recurrence and Chapuy-Féray-Fusy bijection). As far as we know, this bijection is new and not equivalent to any of the well-known bijections between planar maps and tree-like objects.
An orientation of a graph $G$ is proper if any two adjacent vertices have different indegrees. The proper orientation number $\overrightarrowχ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum of the maximum indegree, taken over all proper orientations of $G$. In this paper, we show that a connected bipartite graph may be properly oriented even if we are only allowed to control the orientation of a specific set of edges, namely, the edges of a spanning tree and all the edges incident to one of its leaves. As a consequence of this result, we prove that 3-connected planar bipartite graphs have proper orientatio…
Inspired by the paper of Bonichon, Bousquet-Mélou, Dorbec and Pennarun, we give a system of functional equations which characterise the ordinary generating function, $U(x),$ for the number of planar Eulerian orientations counted by edges. We also characterise the ogf $A(x)$, for 4-valent planar Eulerian orientations counted by vertices in a similar way. The latter problem is equivalent to the 6-vertex problem on a random lattice, widely studied in mathematical physics. While unable to solve these functional equations, they immediately provide polynomial-time algorithms for computing the coeffi…
We set the foundation for a series of works aimed at proving strong relations between uniform random planar maps and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). Our method relies on a bijective encoding of site-percolated planar triangulations by certain 2D lattice paths. Our bijection parallels in the discrete setting the \emph{mating-of-trees} framework of LQG and Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE) introduced by Duplantier, Miller, and Sheffield. Combining these two correspondences allows us to relate uniform site-percolated triangulations to $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG and SLE$_6$. In particular, we establish the …

We present bijections for planar maps with boundaries. In particular, we obtain bijections for triangulations and quadrangulations of the sphere with boundaries of prescribed lengths. For triangulations we recover the beautiful factorized formula obtained by Krikun using a (technically involved) generating function approach. The analogous formula for quadrangulations is new. We also obtain a far-reaching generalization for other face-degrees. In fact, all the known enumerative formulas for maps with boundaries are proved bijectively in the present article (and several new formulas are obtained…

We present a bijection between some quadrangular dissections of an hexagon and unrooted binary trees, with interesting consequences for enumeration, mesh compression and graph sampling. Our bijection yields an efficient uniform random sampler for 3-connected planar graphs, which turns out to be determinant for the quadratic complexity of the current best known uniform random sampler for labelled planar graphs [{\bf Fusy, Analysis of Algorithms 2005}]. It also provides an encoding for the set $\mathcal{P}(n)$ of $n$-edge 3-connected planar graphs that matches the entropy bound $\frac1n\log_2|\m…
Solving the first nonmonotonic, longer-than-three instance of a classic enumeration problem, we obtain the generating function $H(x)$ of all 1342-avoiding permutations of length $n$ as well as an {\em exact} formula for their number $S_n(1342)$. While achieving this, we bijectively prove that the number of indecomposable 1342-avoiding permutations of length $n$ equals that of labeled plane trees of a certain type on $n$ vertices recently enumerated by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer, which is in turn known to be equal to the number of rooted bicubic maps enumerated by Tutte in 1963. Moreover, $H(…
The dual of a map is a fundamental construction on combinatorial maps, but many other combinatorial objects also possess their notion of duality. For instance, the Tamari lattice is isomorphic to its order dual, which induces an involution on the set of so-called "synchronized intervals" introduced by Préville-Ratelle and the present author. Another example is the class of $β$-(1,0) trees, which has a mysterious involution $h$ proposed by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrímsson (2009). These two classes of combinatorial objects are all in bijection with the class of non-separable planar maps, which…
Consider an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$. A subgraph of $G$ is a subset of its edges, whilst an orientation of $G$ is an assignment of a direction to each edge. Provided with an integer circulation-demand $d:V\to \mathbb{Z}$, we show an explicit and efficiently computable bijection between subgraphs of $G$ on which a $d$-flow exists and orientations on which a $d$-flow exists. Moreover, given a cost function $w:E\to (0,\infty)$ we can find such a bijection which preserves the $w$-min-cost-flow. In 2013, Kozma and Moran showed, using dimensional methods, that the number of subgraphs $k$-connectin…
We provide "growth schemes" for inductively generating uniform random $2p$-angulations of the sphere with $n$ faces, as well as uniform random simple triangulations of the sphere with $2n$ faces. In the case of $2p$-angulations, we provide a way to insert a new face at a random location in a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n$ faces in such a way that the new map is precisely a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n+1$ faces. Similarly, given a uniform simple triangulation of the sphere with $2n$ faces, we describe a way to insert two new adjacent triangles so as to obtain a uniform simple triangulation…
A graph $G$ covers a graph $H$ if there exists a locally bijective homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. We deal with regular covers in which this locally bijective homomorphism is prescribed by an action of a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(G)$. Regular covers have many applications in constructions and studies of big objects all over mathematics and computer science. We study computational aspects of regular covers that have not been addressed before. The decision problem RegularCover asks for two given graphs $G$ and $H$ whether $G$ regularly covers $H$. When $|H|=1$, this problem becomes Cayley graph recog…
We present a simple bijection between Baxter permutations of size $n$ and plane bipolar orientations with n edges. This bijection translates several classical parameters of permutations (number of ascents, right-to-left maxima, left-to-right minima...) into natural parameters of plane bipolar orientations (number of vertices, degree of the sink, degree of the source...), and has remarkable symmetry properties. By specializing it to Baxter permutations avoiding the pattern 2413, we obtain a bijection with non-separable planar maps. A further specialization yields a bijection between permutation…
This habilitation thesis summarizes the research that I have carried out from 2005 to 2019. It is organized in four chapters. The first three deal with random planar maps. Chapter 1 is about their metric properties: from a general map-mobile bijection, we compute the three-point function of quadrangulations, before discussing the connection with continued fractions. Chapter 2 presents the slice decomposition, a unified bijective approach that applies notably to irreducible maps. Chapter 3 concerns the $O(n)$ loop model on planar maps: by a combinatorial decomposition, we obtain the phase diagr…
This article presents unified bijective constructions for planar maps, with control on the face degrees and on the girth. Recall that the girth is the length of the smallest cycle, so that maps of girth at least $d=1,2,3$ are respectively the general, loopless, and simple maps. For each positive integer $d$, we obtain a bijection for the class of plane maps (maps with one distinguished root-face) of girth $d$ having a root-face of degree $d$. We then obtain more general bijective constructions for annular maps (maps with two distinguished root-faces) of girth at least $d$. Our bijections assoc…
We consider the Functional Orientation 2-Color problem, which was introduced by Valiant in his seminal paper on holographic algorithms [SIAM J. Comput., 37(5), 2008]. For this decision problem, Valiant gave a polynomial time holographic algorithm for planar graphs of maximum degree 3, and showed that the problem is NP-complete for planar graphs of maximum degree 10. A recent result on defective graph coloring by Corrêa et al. [Australas. J. Combin., 43, 2009] implies that the problem is already hard for planar graphs of maximum degree 8. Together, these results leave open the hardness question…
A unicellular map is a map which has only one face. We give a bijection between a dominant subset of rooted unicellular maps of fixed genus and a set of rooted plane trees with distinguished vertices. The bijection applies as well to the case of labelled unicellular maps, which are related to all rooted maps by Marcus and Schaeffer's bijection. This gives an immediate derivation of the asymptotic number of unicellular maps of given genus, and a simple bijective proof of a formula of Lehman and Walsh on the number of triangulations with one vertex. From the labelled case, we deduce an expressio…
In 1997, Schaeffer described a bijection between Eulerian planar maps and some trees. In this work we generalize his work to a bijection between bicolorable maps on a surface of any fixed genus and some unicellular maps with the same genus. An important step of this construction is to exhibit a canonical orientation for maps, that allows to apply the same local opening algorithm as Schaeffer. As an important byproduct, we obtain the first bijective proof of a result of Bender and Canfield from 1991, when they proved that the generating series of maps in higher genus is a rational function of t…
We present unified bijections for maps on the torus with control on the face-degrees and essential girth (girth of the periodic planar representation). A first step is to show that for d>=3 every toroidal d-angulation of essential girth d can be endowed with a certain "canonical" orientation (formulated as a weight-assignment on the half-edges). Using an adaptation of a construction by Bernardi and Chapuy, we can then derive a bijection between face-rooted toroidal d-angulations of essential girth d (with the condition that, apart from the root-face contour, no other closed walk of length d en…
A rooted planar map is a connected graph embedded in the 2-sphere, with one edge marked and assigned an orientation. A term of the pure lambda calculus is said to be linear if every variable is used exactly once, normal if it contains no beta-redexes, and planar if it is linear and the use of variables moreover follows a deterministic stack discipline. We begin by showing that the sequence counting normal planar lambda terms by a natural notion of size coincides with the sequence (originally computed by Tutte) counting rooted planar maps by number of edges. Next, we explain how to apply the ma…
We address the six vertex model on a random lattice, which in combinatorial terms corresponds to the enumeration of weighted 4-valent planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation. This problem was exactly, albeit non-rigorously solved by Ivan Kostov in 2000 using matrix integral techniques. We convert Kostov's work to a combinatorial argument involving functional equations coming from recursive decompositions of the maps, which we solve rigorously using complex analysis. We then investigate modular properties of the solution, which lead to simplifications in certain special cases. In part…
