Radiative and leptonic decays of B-mesons represent an excellent laboratory for the search for New Physics. I present here recent results on radiative and leptonic decays from the Belle and BABAR collaborations.
We review recent measurements of leptonic $D_s$-meson decays performed by Belle and BaBar collaborations. Described measurements enable experimental extraction of the $D_s$-meson decay constant which can be compared with lattice QCD calculations.
Recent measurements of branching fractions, form factors and decay constants of leptonic and semileptonic decays of D_(s)-mesons acquired at experiments running at the Upsilon(4S) resonance energy are reviewed.
We review recent results from the BABAR and Belle experiments on rare electroweak B-meson decays, with emphasis on those occurring through flavor changing neutral current interactions of the type b -> s l l. The recent results include measurements of the isospin asymmetry and lepton forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* l+ l- decays from BABAR, a search for B -> pi l+ l- from Belle, and searches for B \to K(*) nu anti-nu from BABAR. We also briefly review the status of B0 -> l+ l- and B+ -> l+ nu searches.
We present the proceedings of the lectures given at the 2008 Helmholtz International Summer School Heavy Quark Physics at the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics in Dubna. In two lectures we present recent results from the existing $B$-factories experiments, Belle and BaBar. The discussed topics include short phenomenological motivation, experimental methods and results on $B$ meson oscillations, selected rare $B$ meson decays (leptonic, $b\to sγ$ and $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$), mixing and CP violation in the system of $D^0$ mesons, and leptonic decays of $D_s$ mesons.
In this article, I review the most recent results in radiative penguin decays from the B factories Belle and Babar. Most notably, I will talk about the recent new observations in the decays B -> (rho/omega) gamma, a new analysis technique in b -> s gamma, and first measurements of radiative penguin decays in the B_s meson system. Finally, I will summarize the current status and future prospects of radiative penguin B physics at the B factories.
Virtual fermionic N_f = 1 and N_f = 2 contributions to Bhabha scattering are combined with realistic real corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order in QED. The virtual corrections are determined by the package bha_nnlo_hf, and real corrections with the Monte Carlo generators Bhagen-1Ph, Helac-Phegas and Ekhara. Numerical results are discussed at the energies of and with realistic cuts used at the Phi factory DAFNE, at the B factories PEP-II and KEK, and at the charm/tau factory BEPC II. We compare these complete calculations with the approximate ones realized in the generator BabaYaga@NLO u…
This paper reviews the status of searches and measurements of Bu leptonic decays, concentrating on the most recent results obtained at B-factories. We will describe studies of decays of the type B+ -> ell+ nu and B+ -> ell+ nu gamma.
Electro-weak penguin and leptonic decays provide an indirect probe for physics beyond the Standard Model and contribute to the determination of Standard Model parameters. Copious quantities of B mesons produced at the B-Factories permit precision measurements of the electro-weak penguin decays and searches for leptonic decays. We review the current experimental status of b -> s(d) gamma, B^0 -> D^{*0} gamma, b -> s l^+ l^- and finally B->tau nu decays at BaBar.
We summarize recent results on B+ -> tau+ nu setting constraints on the charged Higgs mass, discuss the CP puzzle in B -> K pi decays and present searches for a light neutral Higgs in radiative Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S)decays.
The energy dependence of the electron - positron hadronic cross section can be measured not only by a straightforward energy scan, but also by means of the radiative return method. To provide extensive comparisons between theory and experiment a Monte Carlo event generator is an indispensable tool. We have developed such a generator called PHOKHARA, which simulates e+e- -> mesons + photon(s) processes. In this paper we present its latest tests and upgrades.
We review recent experimental progress in the domain of rare radiative, semileptonic and leptonic B decays. The statistical precision attained for these decays has reached a level where they start to impose meaningful constraints on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, which are complementary to those obtained from hadronic decays. While the current data indicate no deviations from Standard Model predictions, there is still some room for new physics in these decays.
The impact of final-state radiation (FSR) on the radiative return method for the extraction of the e+e- hadronic cross section is discussed in detail. Possible experimental tests of the model dependence of FSR are proposed for the pi+pi- hadronic final state. The importance of the (pi+pi-photon) final state contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is investigated, and a method based on the radiative return is proposed to extract these contributions from data.
Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector we have studied tau radiative decays tau --> mu nu nu gamma and tau --> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of a tau radiatively decaying to a muon is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3}, and to an electron is (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}. The branching fractions are in agreement with the Standard Model theoretical predictions. All quoted results are preliminary.
Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively. The branching fractions are in agreement with the Standard Model theoretical predictions.
Recent BaBar results on rare B decays involving flavour-changing neutral currents or purely leptonic final states are presented. New measurements of the CP asymmetries in B -> K* gamma, B -> K*2(1430) gamma, and b -> s gamma are reported, as well as a new measurement of the B -> K* gamma branching fraction. Also reported are updated limits on B -> mu nu and recent measurements of B -> K* l+ l- and b -> s l+ l-. The data sample comprises 123 10^6 Y4S -> B Bbar decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring.
Leptonic and semileptonic decays in the charm sector have been well studied in recent years. With the largest data sample near $D\bar D$ threshold, precision measurements of leptonic and semileptonic decays of charm meson and baryon are perfromed at BESIII. Test for letpon flavor universality is also performed. Sensitivity for rare leptonic and semileptonic charm decays is significantly improved taking advantage of the huge statistics in LHCb and the $B$ factories.
$B$-meson decays involving radiative and electroweak penguin processes are sensitive probes to new physics beyond the standard model. The Belle experiment recently reported measurements of the inclusive radiative decay $B \to X^{}_{s} γ$, and exclusive radiative decays $B \to K^{\ast} γ$ and $B \to K^{0}_{S} ηγ$. A lepton-flavor dependent measurements of angular observables for the decays $B \to K^{\ast} \ell \ell$ by Belle hinted at possible deviation from lepton-flavor-universality. Any departure from lepton flavor universality is essentially accompanied by lepton flavor violation. Recently,…
The feasibility of a measurement of the electric and magnetic nucleon form factors at $B$-meson factories through the radiative return is studied. Angular distributions allow a separation of the contributions from the two form factors. The distributions are presented for the laboratory and the hadronic rest frame, and the advantages of different coordinate systems are investigated. It is demonstrated that $Q^2$ values up to 8 or even 9 GeV$^2$ are within reach. The Monte Carlo event generator PHOKHARA is extended to nucleon final states, and results are presented which include Next-to-Leading …
Branching fractions of B^0s decays into specific CP eigenstates are presented, and these and other results are combined in world averages to evaluate implications on the width difference between mass or CP eigenstates, ΔΓ_s. New results on purely leptonic decays of B hadrons from the Tevatron and B factories are also presented.
Recent BABAR and Belle results on rare B decays involving photons or lepton pairs are reviewed. New preliminary limits from both experiments for B-->rho gamma and B-->omega gamma, and from BABAR for B --> K nu nu and B --> tau nu are presented. Also summarized from the past year are Belle measurements of B-->Xs l+l- and B0-->K2(1430) gamma, preliminary BABAR measurements of B-->Xs gamma, and preliminary results from BABAR and Belle on B-->K(*)l+l-. No significant deviations from Standard Model predictions have yet been found.
The measurement of the pion form factor and, more generally, of the cross section for electron--positron annihilation into hadrons through the radiative return has become an important task for high luminosity colliders such as the $Φ$- or $B$-meson factories. For detailed understanding and analysis of this reaction, the construction of a Monte Carlo program, PHOKHARA, has been undertaken. Version 2.0 was based on a next-to-leading order (NLO) treatment of the corrections from initial-state radiation (ISR). In the present paper a further extension of PHOKHARA (version 3.0) is described, which i…
We perform a measurement of the tau -> l gamma nu anti-nu (l = e, mu) branching fractions for a minimum photon energy of 10 MeV in the tau rest frame, using 431fb^-1 of e^+e^- collisions collected at the center-of-mass energy of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II storage rings. We find B(tau -> mu gamma nu anti-nu ) = (3.69pm0.03pm0.10)x10^-3, and B(tau -> e gamma nu anti-nu ) = (1.847pm0.015pm0.052)x10^-2, where the first quoted error is statistical, and the second is systematic. These results are substantially more precise than previous measurements.
Radiative penguin decays provide a hunting ground complementary to direct searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. In the era of B-factories copious production of B mesons permits precision measurements of radiative penguin decays. We present herein the status of radiative penguin processes and expectations at high luminosities, focusing on b -> s (d) gamma, b -> s l+ l-, and b -> s ννbar modes
In this note we present a study of the radiative tails in the invariant mass spectra of muon or electron pairs from J/psi, psi(2S) and Upsilon(1S) decays which is due to an additional emission of a photon. An analytic formula for dilepton mass spectra in radiative decays is derived and a Monte Carlo simulation for realistic detector conditions is used to study effects on the spectra. A rather simple parameterisation is given, suitable for the treatment of real data.
The radiative return offers the unique possibility for a measurement of the cross section of electron--positron annihilation into hadrons over a wide range of energies. The large luminosity of present phi- and B-factories easily compensates for the additional factor of alpha due to the emission of a hard photon. Final states with photons at large angles can be easily identified. The rate for events with collinear photons, however, is enhanced by a large logarithm and allows, in particular at lower energies, for a complementary measurement. The Monte Carlo generator PHOKHARA, which includes nex…
We review the salient features of $B$-meson physics, with particular emphasis on the measurements carried out at the $B$-factories and Tevatron, theoretical progress in understanding these measurements in the context of the standard model, and anticipation at the LHC. Topics discussed specifically are the current status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, the CP-violating phases, rare radiative and semileptonic decays, and some selected non-leptonic two-body decays of the $B$ mesons.
The branching fractions of radiative leptonic $τ$ decays $(τ\to l ν\barν γ$, $l=e,μ)$ were recently measured by the Babar collaboration with a relative error of about 3%. The measurement of the branching ratio $\mathcal{B} (τ\to e \barν νγ)$, for a minimum photon energy of 10 MeV in the $τ$ rest frame, differs from our recent SM prediction by 3.5 standard deviations, whereas our result agrees with Babar's value for $\mathcal{B} (τ\to μ\barν νγ)$. Our predictions also agree with the measurement of $\mathcal{B} (μ\to e \barν νγ)$ by the MEG collaboration. We also report on a recent proposal to t…
In this work, we investigate the radiative leptonic decays D_(s)^- \to γ\ell \barν(\ell = e, μ) at tree level within the non-relativistic consistuent quark model and the effective Lagrangian for the heavy flavor decays. We find that the contributions for the three Feynman diagrams are all important. With the full calculation, the decay branching ratios are of the order of 10^-5 for D_s^- \to γ\ell \barνand 10^-6 for D^- \to γ\ell \barν, respectively. These decays can be measured at B factories and future CLEO-C experiments to determine the decay constants f_D_s and f_D.
Radiative penguin decays provide an indirect probe for physics beyond the Standard Model and contribute to the determination of the CKM matrix elements. Copious quantities of B mesons produced at the B-Factories permit precision measurements of radiative penguin decays. We review the experimental status of the radiative penguin processes b --> s(d) gamma.
We present the results of a search for $B^{+}\toγ\ell^{+}ν_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, μ$. We use a sample of 232 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II $B$ Factory. We measure a partial branching fraction $Δ\mathcal{B}$ in a restricted region of phase space that reduces the effect of theoretical uncertainties, requiring the lepton energy to be between 1.875 and 2.850GeV, the photon energy to be between 0.45 and 2.35GeV, and the cosine of the angle between the lepton and photon momenta to be less than -0.36, with all quantities computed in the $Υ(4…
We propose a new method to probe the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the $τ$ lepton using precise measurements of the differential rates of radiative leptonic $τ$ decays at high-luminosity $B$ factories. Possible deviations of these moments from the Standard Model values are analyzed in an effective Lagrangian approach, thus providing model-independent results. Analytic expressions for the relevant non-standard contributions to the differential decay rates are presented. Earlier proposals to probe the $τ$ dipole moments are examined. A detailed feasibility study of our method is perfor…
Non-leptonic two-body weak decays of baryons are an important tool to probe the combined charge-conjugation--parity symmetry (CP) violation. We explain why the decays of strange baryons provide complementary information to the decays of kaons. A model-independent parameterization of the non-leptonic decays of the $Λ$- and $Ξ$-baryons is reviewed, and the amplitudes are updated according to the latest experimental input. We demonstrate the potential of performing precision tests in strange baryon decays at the next generation electron-positron $J/ψ$ factories with luminosity of $10^{35}$ cm$^{-…
Since the smallest leptonic mixing angle theta_{13} has been measured to be relatively large, it is quite promising to constrain or determine the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase delta in future neutrino oscillation experiments. Given some typical values of delta = pi/2, pi, and 3pi/2 at the low-energy scale, as well as current experimental results of the other neutrino parameters, we perform a systematic study of the radiative corrections to delta by using the one-loop renormalization group equations in the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the universal extra-dimensional model. It t…
I discuss recent developments on non-leptonic and radiative kaon decays mainly related to direct CP-violation within the combined ChPT and 1/N_c expansion approaches. In particular, I review the status of K -> pi pi, epsilon_K', direct CP-violating K+ -> 3 pi Dalitz plot slope g and decay rate asymmetries, and the Standard Model prediction for Br(K_L -> pi0 e+ e-).
Non-leptonic charm decays provide insights into both electro-weak and strong dynamics. This includes the study of long-distance hadronic effects, the approximate symmetries of strong interactions, and precision tests of the Standard Model. In these proceedings we summarise recent results in non-leptonic branching fraction measurements of D mesons, including measurements of relative and absolute branching fractions in inclusive and exclusive modes, radiative decays, and measurements of direct CP violation.
We study the radiative leptonic $B_c\to γ\ell\barν$ decays in the nonrelativistic QCD effective field theory, and consider a fast-moving photon. As a result the interactions with the heavy quarks can be integrated out, and thus we arrive at a factorization formula for the decay amplitude. We calculate not only the relevant short-distance coefficients at leading order and next-to-leading order in $α_s$, but also the nonrelativistic corrections at the order $|\bold{v}|^2$ in our analysis. We find out that the QCD corrections can sizably decrease the branching ratio and thus is of great importanc…
We present the differential rates and branching ratios of the radiative decays $τ\to l \barν νγ$, with $l=e$ or $μ$, and $μ\to e \barν νγ$ in the Standard Model at next-to-leading order. Radiative corrections are computed taking into account the full depencence on the mass $m_l$ of the final charged leptons, which is necessary for the correct determination of the branching ratios. Only partial agreement is found with previous calculations performed in the $m_l \to 0$ limit. Our results agree with the measurements of the branching ratios $\mathcal{B} (μ\to e \barν νγ)$ and $\mathcal{B} (τ\to μ\…
Three CP-violating phases of the $3\times 3$ lepton flavor mixing matrix $V$ are entangled with one another in the renormalization-group evolution from the seesaw scale ($Λ_{\rm SS} \sim 10^{14}$ GeV) to the electroweak scale ($Λ_{\rm EW} \sim 10^2$ GeV). Concerning the Dirac phase $δ$, we show that $δ=90^\circ$ at $Λ_{\rm EW}$ can be radiatively generated from $δ=0^\circ$ at $Λ_{\rm SS}$ in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, if three neutrino masses are nearly degenerate. As for the Majorana phases $ρ$ and $σ$, it is also possible to radiatively generate $ρ=90^\circ$ or $σ= 90^\circ$ …
A brief review of experimental results on charmonium and charmonium-like hadron spectroscopy at B-factories is presented. A special focus is put on recent results of eta_c and eta_c(2S) study, X(3872) radiative decays, omega J/psi final state study and search for charmonium production in radiative Upsilon decays.
SuperB experiment could represent an ideal environment to test a new U (1) symmetry related to light dark forces candidates. A promising discovery channel is represented by the resonant production of a boson U, followed by its decay into lepton pairs. Beyond approximations adopted in the literature, an exact tree level calculation of the radiative processes $e+ e- \rightarrow γ, U \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- γ, e^+ e^- γ$ and corresponding QED backgrounds is performed, including also the most important higher-order corrections. The calculation is implemented in a release of the generator BabaYaga@NLO …
Recently it has been demonstrated that particle factories, such as DAPHNE and PEP-II, operating at fixed center-of-mass energies, are able to measure hadronic cross sections as a function of the hadronic system energy using the raditive return. This paper is an experimental overview of the progress in this aera. Preliminary results from KLOE for the process e+e- -> ργ-> π+π-γand a fit to the pion form factor are presented. Some first results from the BABAR collaboration are also shown.
The measurement of the pion form factor and, more generally, of the cross section for electron--positron annihilation into hadrons through the radiative return has become an important task for high luminosity colliders such as the $Φ$- or $B$-meson factories. This quantity is crucial for predictions of the hadronic contributions to $(g-2)_μ$, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and to the running of the electromagnetic coupling. But the radiative return opens also the possibility of many other physical applications. The physics potential of this method at high luminosity meson factories…

High-luminosity e+ e- colliders at the GeV scale (flavor factories) have been recently recognized to be an ideal environment to search for a light weakly coupled vector boson U (dark photon) emerging in several new physics models able to interpret anomalous astrophysical observations in terms of dark matter. At flavor factories a particularly clean channel is the production of the U boson in association with a photon, followed by the decay of the U boson into lepton pairs. Beyond the approximations addressed in previous works, we revisit the reach potential of this channel by performing an exa…
Using existing experimental information from K, B and D decays as well as electroweak precision tests and oblique parameters, we provide constraints and correlations on the parameters of the 4X4 mixing matrix for the Standard Model with four generations (SM4). We emphasize that some correlations amongst the parameters have important repercussions for key observables. We work with a particular representation of this matrix which is highly suited for extracting information from B-decays. Implications of the resulting constraints for time dependent and semileptonic CP asymmetries for $D^0$, $B^0$…
The available data on $|ΔB| = |ΔS| = 1$ decays are in good agreement with the Standard Model when permitting subleading power corrections of about 15% at large hadronic recoil. Constraining new-physics effects in $\mathcal{C}_7$, $\mathcal{C}_9$, $\mathcal{C}_{10}$, the data still demand the same size of power corrections as in the Standard Model. In the presence of chirality-flipped operators, all but one of the power corrections reduce substantially. The Bayes factors are in favor of the Standard Model. Using new lattice inputs for $B\to K^*$ form factors, the evidence of models with chirali…
The recently proposed MUonE experiment at CERN aims at providing a novel determination of the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment through the study of elastic muon-electron scattering at relatively small momentum transfer. The anticipated accuracy of the order of 10ppm demands for high-precision predictions, including all the relevant radiative corrections. The fixed-order NNLO radiative corrections due to the emission of virtual and real leptonic pairs are described and their numerical impact is discussed for typical event selections of the MUonE experime…
We derive the corrections induced by the W-boson propagator to the differential rates of the leptonic decay of a polarized muon and tau lepton. Results are presented both for decays inclusive of inner bremsstrahlung as well as for radiative ones, when a photon emitted in the decay process is measured. The numerical effect of these corrections is discussed. The definition of the Fermi constant is briefly reviewed.
Applying the method of light-cone sum rules with photon distribution amplitudes, we compute the subleading-power correction to the radiative leptonic $B \to γ\ell ν$ decay, at next-to-leading order in QCD for the twist-two contribution and at leading order in $α_s$ for the higher-twist contributions, induced by the hadronic component of the collinear photon. The leading-twist hadronic photon effect turns out to preserve the symmetry relation between the two $B \to γ$ form factors due to the helicity conservation, however, the higher-twist hadronic photon corrections can yield symmetry-breaking…
The huge datasets collected at the two B factories, Belle and BaBar, have made it possible to explore the radiative penguin process b --> s gamma, the electroweak penguin process b --> s l+ l- and the suppressed radiative process b --> d gamma in detail, all in exclusive channels and inclusive measurements. Theoretical tools have also advanced to meet or surpass the experimental precision, especially in inclusive calculations and the various ratios of exclusive channels. In this article, we review the theoretical and experimental progress over the past decade in the radiative and electroweak p…
We present a comparison of existing experimental data for the radiative leptonic decays $P\to\ellν_\ellγ$, where $P=K$ or $π$ and $\ell=e$ or $μ$, from the KLOE, PIBETA, E787, ISTRA+ and OKA collaborations with theoretical predictions based on the recent non-perturbative determinations of the structure-dependent vector and axial-vector form factors, $F_V$ and $F_A$ respectively. These were obtained using lattice QCD+QED simulations at order $O(α_{\mathrm{em}})$ in the electromagnetic coupling. We find good agreement with the KLOE data on $K\to eν_eγ$ decays from which the form factor $F^+=F_V+…
The leptonic QED radiative corrections are calculated in the next-to-leading log approximation ${\cal O}[α^2 \ln(Q^2/m_e^2)]$ for unpolarized deeply inelastic $ep$--scattering in the case of mixed variables. The corrections are determined using mass factorization in the OMS--scheme for the double--differential scattering cross sections.
Using an improved "analytic K-matrix model", we reconsider the extraction of the sigma/f_0(600) and f_0(980) gamma-gamma widths from gamma-gamma to pi-pi scatterings data of Crystal Ball and Belle. Our main results are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. The averaged sigma "direct width" to gamma-gamma is 0.16(3) keV which confirms a previous result of [1] and which does neither favour a large four-quark (diquark-antidiquark) nor a molecule nor a pure \bar qq component. The "direct width" of the f_0(980) of 0.28(2) keV is much larger than the four-quark expectation but can be compatible with a \bar …
