Parameters of nuclear density distributions are derived from least-squares fits to strong interaction observables in exotic atoms. Global analyses of antiprotonic and pionic atoms show reasonably good agreement between the two types of probes regarding the average behaviour of root-mean-square radii of the neutron distributions. Apparent conflict regarding the shape of the neutron distribution is attributed to different radial sensitivities of these two probes.
The semiclassical origins of the enhancement of shell effects in exotic-shape mean-field potentials are investigated by focusing attention on the roles of the local symmetries associated with the periodic-orbit bifurcations. The deformed shell structures for four types of pure octupole shapes in the nuclear mean-field model having a realistic radial dependence are analyzed. Remarkable shell effects are shown for a large Y32 deformation having tetrahedral symmetry. Much stronger shell effects found in the shape parametrization smoothly connecting the sphere and the tetrahedron are investigated …
The dispersive optical model (DOM) is employed to simultaneously describe elastic nucleon scattering data for ${}^{40}$Ca, ${}^{48}$Ca, and ${}^{208}$Pb as well as observables related to the ground state of these nuclei, with emphasis on the charge density. Such an analysis requires a fully non-local implementation of the DOM including its imaginary component. Illustrations are provided how ingredients thus generated provide critical components for the description of the $(d,p)$ and $(e,e'p)$ reaction. For the nuclei with $N > Z$ the neutron distribution is constrained by available elastic sca…
The spin and parity dependent nuclear level densities (NLD) are calculated for medium-heavy nuclei using shell model techniques. The NLD are used to calculate cross sections and reaction rates of interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear energy applications. We investigate a new approach of describing the shell model NLD via a constant temperature parametrization. This approach provides new information about the effects of symmetries on the temperature of the low-lying nuclear states, and it is shown to be more versatile for applications.
We present the first application of the newly developed EKK theory of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction to shell-model studies of exotic nuclei, including those where conventional approaches with fitted interactions encounter difficulties. This EKK theory enables us to derive the interaction suitable for several major shells ($sd$+$pf$ in this work). By using such an effective interaction obtained from the Entem-Machleidt QCD-based $χ\mathrm{N}^3\mathrm{LO}$ interaction and the Fujita-Miyazawa three-body force, the energies, E2 properties and spectroscopic factors of low-lying states o…
The density profile of exotic nuclei can be a rich source of information on the nuclear surface. In particular, the nuclear surface diffuseness parameter is correlated with the occupation probability of nucleons indistinct nuclear orbits, especially those with low angular momenta. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the nuclear surface diffuseness and spectroscopic information of neutron rich Ne and Mg isotopes both at the cusp and inside the island of inversion. We use the microscopic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model to calculate these densities and other …
The algebraic molecular model is used in $^{12}$C to construct densities and transition densities connecting low-lying states of the rotovibrational spectrum, first and foremost those belonging to the rotational bands based on the ground and the Hoyle states. These densities are then used as basic ingredients to calculate, besides electromagnetic transition probabilities, nuclear potentials and formfactors to describe elastic and inelastic $α$+$^{12}$C scattering processes. The calculated densities and transition densities are also compared with those obtained by directly solving the problem o…
The sensitive correlations between the low-density halo structure and the high-density properties of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) are constructed in light kaonic nuclei with the relativistic mean-field theory. More specifically, the $1p_{1/2}$ halo spreads out linearly with increasing the pressure and sound velocity square at supra-normal densities and quadratically with decreasing the incompressibility at saturation density. These results suggest that the novel halo in light kaonic nuclei can serve as a sensitive indicator of the nuclear EOS of symmetric matter at supra-normal densitie…
A model is developed, based on the density functional perturbation theory and the inverse Kohn-Sham method, that can be used to improve relativistic nuclear energy density functionals towards an exact but unknown Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation functional. The improved functional is determined by empirical exact ground-state densities of finite systems. A test of the model and an illustrative calculation are performed, starting from two different approximate functionals, to reproduce the parameters and density dependence of a target functional, using exact ground-state densities of symmetric N=…
Role of different model ingredients in the exotic cluster-decay of $^{56}Ni^*$
Nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) plays a prominent role in the understanding of nuclear structure, being the approach with the widest range of applications. Hohenberg and Kohn theorems warrant the existence of a nuclear Energy Density Functional (EDF), yet its form is unknown. Current efforts to build a nuclear EDF are hindered by the lack of a strategy for systematic improvement. In this context, alternative approaches should be pursued and, so far, an unexplored avenue is that related to the inverse DFT problem. DFT is based on the one-to-one correspondence between Kohn-Sham (KS) pote…
Background: The nuclear kinetic density is one of many fundamental quantities in density functional theory (DFT) dependent on the nonlocal nuclear density. Often, approximations may be made when computing the density that may result in spurious contributions in other DFT quantities. With the ability to compute the nonlocal nuclear density from ab initio wave functions, it is now possible to estimate effects of such spurious contributions. Purpose: We derive the kinetic density using ab initio nonlocal scalar one-body nuclear densities computed within the no-core shell model (NCSM) approach, ut…
The study of exotic nuclei---nuclei with the ratio of neutron number $N$ to proton number $Z$ deviating much from that of those found in nature---is at the forefront of nuclear physics research because it can not only reveal novel nuclear properties and thus enrich our knowledge of atomic nuclei, but also help us to understand the origin of chemical elements in the nucleosynthesis. With the development of radioactive ion beam facilities around the world, more and more unstable nuclei become experimentally accessible. Many exotic nuclear phenomena have been observed or predicted in nuclei far f…
The dynamics of exotic hypernuclei in heavy-ion collisions has been investigated thoroughly with a microscopic transport model. All possible channels on hyperon ($Λ$, $Σ$ and $Ξ$) production near threshold energies are implemented in the transport model. The light complex fragments (Z$\leq$2) are constructed with the Wigner-function method. The classical phase-space coalescence is used for recognizing heavy nuclear and hyperfragments and the statistical model is taken for describing the decay process. The nuclear fragmentation reactions of the available experimental data from the ALADIN collab…
