We present an analysis of the normal state magnetotransport in the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn${_5}$. The Hall effect and the transverse magnetoresistance in this material do not appear to be uniquely correlated, as inferred from the field dependence of the current ratio ($R_σ = σ_{xy} / σ_{xx}^2 H$). The Hall coefficient is seen to satisfy a scaling equation of the form $R_H = f [H / (a + b T^c)]$. These results are compared to those observed earlier in CeCoIn$_5$, and are discussed in terms of the contrasting phase diagram which the CeIrIn$_5$ system exhibits in relation to its Co counterpart.
We present an overview of magnetotransport measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn$_5$. Sensitive measurements of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance (MR) are used to elucidate the low temperature phase diagram of this system. The normal-state magnetotransport is highly anomalous, and experimental signatures of a pseudogap-like precursor state to superconductivity as well as evidence for two distinct scattering times governing the Hall effect and the MR are observed. Our observations point out the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the magnetotransport in this cla…
We present an analysis of the normal-state Hall effect and magnetoresistance in the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn${_5}$. It is demonstrated that the modified Kohler's scaling--which relates the magnetoresistance to the Hall angle--breaks down prior to the onset of superconductivity due to the presence of a precursor state to superconductivity in this system. A model-independent, single-parameter scaling of the Hall angle governed solely by this precursor state is observed. Neither the Hall coefficient nor the resistivity exhibit this scaling implying that this precursor state preferentia…
In quasi-two dimensional Ce(Ir,Rh)In$_5$ system, it has been suggested that the phase diagram contains two distinct domes with different heavy fermion superconducting states. We here report the systematic pressure dependence of the electron transport properties in the normal state of CeRh$_{0.2}$Ir$_{0.8}$In$_{5}$ and CeIrIn$_{5}$, which locates in first and second superconducting dome, respectively. We observed non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures in both compounds, including non-quadratic $T-$dependence of the resistivity, large enhancement of the Hall coefficient, and the violation…
We present $β$-FeSe magnetotransport data, and describe them theoretically. Using a simplified microscopic model with two correlated effective orbitals, we determined the normal state electrical conductivity and Hall coefficient, using Kubo formalism. With model parameters relevant for Fe-chalcogenides, we describe the observed effect of the structural transition on the ab-plane electrical resistivity, as well as on the magnetoresistance. Temperature-dependent Hall coefficient data were measured at 16 Tesla, and their theoretical description improves upon inclusion of moderate electron correla…
Theories of the magnetotransport, based on the quasipartricle of the Fermi-liquid, in the normal state of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, are critically examined and the necessity of the collective transport theory beyond the quasiparticle is discussed.
We have investigated the upper critical field anisotropy and magnetotransport properties of Fe1.14(1)Te0.91(2)S0.09(2) single crystals in stable magnetic fields up to 35 T. The results show that u0Hc2(T) along the c axis and in the ab-plane exhibit saturation at low temperatures. The anisotropy of u0Hc2(T) decreases with decreasing temperature, becoming nearly isotropic for T->0. Our analysis indicates that the spin-paramagnetic pair-breaking with spin-orbital scattering is responsible for the behavior of u0Hc2(T). Furthermore, from analysis of the normal state properties, we show evidence tha…
The normal state behavior in the heavy-fermion superconductor Ce2PdIn8 has been probed by means of Hall coefficient (RH) and transverse magnetoresistivity (MR) measurements. The results indicate the predominance of contributions from antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at low temperatures. Anomalous non-Fermi-liquid-like features, observed below 8 K in both RH(T) and MR(T), are related to underlying quantum critical point, evidenced before in the specific heat and the electrical resistivity data. The magnetotransport in Ce2PdIn8 is shown to exhibit specific types of scaling that may appear uni…
We report the magnetotransport properties of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}Cu_{1-z}Zn_{z}O_{6+δ} (Zn-doped BSLCO) single crystals with z of up to 2.2%. Besides the typical Zn-doping effects on the in-plane resistivity and the Hall angle, we demonstrate that the nature of the low-temperature normal state in the Zn-doped samples is significantly altered from that in the pristine samples under high magnetic fields. In particular, we observe nearly-isotropic negative magnetoresistance as well as an increase in the Hall coefficient at very low temperatures in non-superconducting Zn-doped samples, which we pr…
Measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect in the normal state of the heavy Fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 have been carried out using a torque cantilever at temperatures ranging from 20 to 500 mK and in fields up to 18 tesla. Angular dependent measurements of the extremal Fermi surface areas reveal a more extreme two dimensional sheet than is found in either CeRhIn5 or CeIrIn5. The effective masses of the measured frequencies range from 9 to 20 m*/m0.
We report magnetoresistance and Hall angle measurements of the electron-doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ over a wide range of dopings from $x = 0.08 - 0.17$. Above 100 K, we find an unconventional $\sim H^{3/2}$ magnetic field dependence of the magnetoresistance observed in all samples doped within the superconducting dome. Further, the measured magnetoresistance violates Kohler's rule. Given the ubiquity of this anomalous magnetoresistance at high temperatures above the superconducting dome, we speculate that the origin of this behavior is linked to the unusual $ρ\sim T^2$ resistivity ob…
We present a systematic study of the dc-resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance in the normal state of quasi 2D heavy fermion superconductors CeMIn5 (M: Rh and Co) under pressure. Here the electronic system evolves with pressure from an antiferromagnetic (AF) metal, through a highly unconventional non-Fermi liquid, and finally into a Fermi-liquid state. The amplitude of the Hall coefficient increases dramatically with decreasing T, reaching at low temperatures a value significantly larger than 1/ne. Furthermore, the magnetoresistance is characterized by T- and H-dependence which clearl…
The electrical resistance, Hall resistance and thermoelectric power of the Ising-like antiferromagnet UIrSi3 were measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field. We have observed that the unequivocally different characters of first-order and second-order magnetic phase transitions lead to distinctly different magnetotransport properties in the neighborhood of corresponding critical temperatures and magnetic fields, respectively. The magnetic contributions to the electrical and Hall resistivity in the antiferromagnetic state, and the polarized and normal regimes of paramagnetic state a…
We study the properties of Dirac fermions on the surface of a topological insulator in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields. We provide an exact solution to this problem and demonstrate that, in contrast to their counterparts in graphene, these Dirac fermions allow relative tuning of the orbital and Zeeman effects of an applied magnetic field by a crossed electric field along the surface. We also elaborate and extend our earlier results on normal metal-magnetic film-normal metal (NMN) and normal metal-barrier-magnetic film (NBM) junctions of topological insulators [Phys. Rev. L…
We present the results of electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements on single crystals of HfNiSn, TiPtSn, and TiNiSn. Semiconducting behavior is observed in each case, involving the transport of a small number of highly compensated carriers. Magnetization measurements suggest that impurities and site disorder create both localized magnetic moments and extended paramagnetic states, with the susceptibility of the latter increasing strongly with reduced temperature. The magnetoresistance is sublinear or linear in fields ranging from 0.01 - 9 Tesla at the lowest temperatures. As the temp…
As in conventional ferromagnets, the Hall resistivity rho_xy of a La_{2/3}(Ca,Pb)_{1/3}MnO_3 single crystal exhibits both ordinary and anomalous contributions at low temperature. However, these contributions, unexpectedly, have opposite signs. Near Tc, the ordinary contribution is no longer evident and rho_xy is solely determined by the sample magnetization, reaching an extremum at approximately 40% of the saturated magnetization. A new model for the anomalous Hall effect, incorporating the quantal phase accumulated by double-exchange, three-site hopping reproduces this result. Below Tc, rho_x…
Ac and dc magnetotransport data in the normal state of YBa2Cu3O7 are analyzed within Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid models. In the Fermi-liquid analysis we use the Fermi surface deduced from band structure calculations and angular resolved photoemission experiments and assume that the electron relaxation rate varies over the Fermi surface. The non-Fermi-liquid models are the two-dimensional Luttinger liquid model and the charge-conjugation-symmetry model. We find that the existing experimental data can be adequately fitted by any of these models. This work provides a framework for the analy…
Magnetotransport theory of layered superconductors in the flux flow steady state is revisited. Longstanding controversies concerning observed Hall sign reversals are resolved. The conductivity separates into a Bardeen-Stephen vortex core contribution, and a Hall conductivity due to moving vortex charge. This charge, which is responsible for Hall anomaly, diverges logarithmically at weak magnetic field. Its values can be extracted from magetoresistivity data by extrapolation of vortex core Hall angle from the normal phase. Hall anomalies in YBCO, BSCCO, and NCCO data are consistent with theoret…
Two critical points have been revealed in the normal-state phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ by exploring the Fermi surface properties of high quality single crystals by high-field magnetotransport. First, the quantitative analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect shows that the weak superlattice potential responsible for the Fermi surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime extrapolates to zero at the doping level $x_c = 0.175$ corresponding to the onset of superconductivity. Second, the high-field Hall coefficient exhibits a sharp drop right…
I point out that a magnetotransport theory on the basis of the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, which is proposed in order to explain anomalous transport properties in the normal state of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors, is not compatible with the Fermi liquid theory and that the anomaly obtained there ascribes to the inconsistency of the approximation.
We propose that the normal-state transport in the cuprate superconductors can be understood in terms of a two-fluid model of spinons and holons. In our scenario, the resistivity is determined by the properties of the holons while magnetotransport involves the recombination of holons and spinons to form physical electrons. Our model implies that the Hall transport time is a measure of the electron lifetime, which is shorter than the longitudinal transport time. This agrees with our analysis of the normal-state data. We predict a strong increase in linewidth with increasing temperature in photoe…
The in-plane Hall coefficient $R_{H}(T)$ of CeRhIn$_{5}$, CeIrIn$_{5}$, and CeCoIn$_{5}$ and their respective non-magnetic lanthanum analogs are reported in fields to 90 kOe and at temperatures from 2 K to 325 K. $R_{H}(T)$ is negative, field-independent, and dominated by skew-scattering above $\sim$ 50 K in the Ce compounds. $R_{H}(H \to 0)$ becomes increasingly negative below 50 K and varies with temperature in a manner that is inconsistent with skew scattering. Field-dependent measurements show that the low-T anomaly is strongly suppressed when the applied field is increased to 90 kOe. Meas…
We fabricate van der Waals heterostructure devices using few unit cell thick Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ for magnetotransport measurements. The superconducting transition temperature and carrier density in atomically thin samples can be maintained to close to that of the bulk samples. As in the bulk sample, the sign of the Hall conductivity is found to be opposite to the normal state near the transition temperature but with a drastic enlargement of the region of Hall sign reversal in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram as the thickness of samples decreases. Quantitative analysis of …
