We here investigate a cosmological model in which three fluids interact with each other involving certain coupling parameters and energy exchange rates. The motivation of the problem stems from the puzzling `triple coincidence problem' which naively asks why the cosmic energy densities of matter, radiation and dark energy are almost of the same order of magnitude at the present time. In our model, we determine the conditions under triple interacting fluids will cross the phantom divide.
We investigate several varying-mass dark-matter particle models in the framework of phantom cosmology. We examine whether there exist late-time cosmological solutions, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. Imposing exponential or power-law potentials and exponential or power-law mass dependence, we conclude that the coincidence problem cannot be solved or even alleviated. Thus, if dark energy is attributed to the phantom paradigm, varying-mass dark matter models cannot fulfill the basic requirement that led to their co…
We examine cyclic phantom models for the universe, in which the universe is dominated sequentially by radiation, matter, and a phantom dark energy field, followed by a standard inflationary phase. Since this cycle repeats endlessly, the Universe spends a substantial portion of its lifetime in a state for which the matter and dark energy densities have comparable magnitudes, thus ameliorating the coincidence problem. We calculate the fraction of time that the universe spends in such a coincidental state and find that it is nearly the same as in the case of a phantom model with a future big rip.…
A method for deriving Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solutions developed in Int. J. Mod. Phys. D{\bf 5}(1996)71-84, is generalized to account for models with non-minimal coupling between the dark energy and the dark matter. New quintessence and phantom (flat) FRW solutions are found. Their physical significance is discussed. Additionally, the aforementioned method is modified so that, "coincidence free" solutions can be readily derived. Besides, we review some aspects of the phantom barrier crossing. In this regard we present a model which is free from the coincidence problem and, at the sam…
Conditions needed to cross the phantom divide line in an interacting holographic dark energy model in closed Friedmann- Robertson-Walker universe are discussed. The probable relationship between this crossing and the coincidence problem is studied.
Phantom dark energy models, with w < -1, are characterized by a future singularity and therefore a finite lifetime for the universe. Because the future singularity is triggered by the onset of dark-energy domination, the universe spends a significant fraction of its total lifetime in a state for which the dark energy and matter densities are roughly comparable. We calculate, as a function of w, the fraction of the total lifetime of the universe for which the dark energy and matter densities differ by less than the ratio r_0 in either direction. For r_0 = 10, this fraction varies from 1/3 to 1/…
An interacting dark energy model with interaction term $Q= λ_m Hρ_m+λ_dHρ_d$ is considered. By studying the model near the transition time, in which the system crosses the w=-1 phantom-divide-line, the conditions needed to overcome the coincidence problem is investigated. The phantom model, as a candidate for dark energy, is considered and for two specific examples, the quadratic and exponential phantom potentials, it is shown that it is possible the system crosses the w=-1 line, meanwhile the coincidence problem is alleviated, the two facts that have root in observations.
We study a cosmological model in which phantom dark energy is coupled to dark matter by phenomenologically introducing a coupled term to the equations of motion of dark energy and dark matter. This term is parameterized by a dimensionless coupling function $δ$, Hubble parameter and the energy density of dark matter, and it describes an energy flow between the dark energy and dark matter. We discuss two cases: one is the case where the equation-of-state $ω_e$ of the dark energy is a constant; the other is that the dimensionless coupling function $δ$ is a constant. We investigate the effect of t…
We consider the oscillating dark energy with periodic equation of state in two equivalent formulations: ideal fluid or scalar-tensor theory. It is shown that such dark energy suggests the natural way for the unification of early-time inflation with late-time acceleration. We demonstrate how it describes the transition from deceleration to acceleration or from non-phantom to phantom era and how it solves the coincidence problem. The occurence of finite-time future singularity for the oscillating (phantom) universe is also investigated.
One of the puzzles of the dark energy problem is the (first) cosmological coincidence problem, namely, {\em why does our universe begin the accelerated expansion recently? why are we living in an epoch in which the dark energy density and the dust matter energy density are comparable?} On the other hand, cosmological observations hint that the equation-of-state parameter (EoS) of dark energy crossed the phantom divide $w_{de}=-1$ in the near past. Many dark energy models whose EoS can cross the phantom divide have been proposed. However, to our knowledge, these models with crossing the phantom…
The coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration is a serious riddle in connection with our understanding of the evolution of the Universe. In this paper we show that an interaction between the dark energy component (either phantom or quintessence) and dark matter can alleviate it. In this scenario the baryon component is independently conserved. This generalizes a previous study [S. del Campo, R. Herrera, and D. Pavon, Phys. Rev. D 71, 123529 (2005)] in which neither baryons nor phantom energy were considered.
We analyze an oscillating universe model in brane world scenario. The oscillating universe cycles through a series of expansions and contractions and its energy density is dominated by dust matter at early-time expansion phase and by phantom dark energy at late-time expansion phase. We find that the period of the oscillating universe is not sensitive to the tension of the brane, but sensitive to the equation-of-state parameter $w$ of the phantom dark energy, and the ratio of the period to the current Hubble age approximately varies from 3 to 9 when the parameter $w$ changes from -1.4 to -1.1. …
Models of the universe with arbitrary (non gravitational) interaction between the components of the cosmic fluid: the phantom energy and the background, are investigated. A general form of the interaction that is inspired in scalar-tensor theories of gravity is considered. No specific model for the phantom fluid is assumed. We concentrate our investigation on solutions that are free of the coincidence problem. We found a wide region in the parameter space where the solutions are free of the big rip singularity also. Physical arguments, together with arguments based on the analysis of the obser…
We perform a detailed phase-space analysis of various phantom cosmological models, where the dark energy sector interacts with the dark matter one. We examine whether there exist late-time scaling attractors, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. We find that all the examined models, although accepting stable late-time accelerated solutions, cannot alleviate the coincidence problem, unless one imposes a form of fine-tuning in the model parameters. It seems that interacting phantom cosmology cannot fulfill the basic req…
Cosmological scaling solutions are particularly important in solving the coincidence problem of dark energy. We derive the equations of sub-Hubble linear matter perturbations for a general scalar-field Lagrangian--including quintessence, tachyon, dilatonic ghost condensate and k-essence--and solve them analytically for scaling solutions. We find that matter perturbations are always damped if a phantom field is coupled to dark matter and identify the cases in which the gravitational potential is constant. This provides an interesting possibility to place stringent observational constraints on s…
Phantom cosmology allows to account for dynamics and matter content of the universe tracing back the evolution to the inflationary epoch, considering the transition to the non-phantom standard cosmology (radiation/matter dominated eras) and recovering the today observed dark energy epoch. We develop the unified phantom cosmology where the same scalar plays the role of early time (phantom) inflaton and late-time Dark Energy. The recent transition from decelerating to accelerating phase is described too by the same scalar field. The (dark) matter may be embedded in this scheme, giving the natura…
In the present work, motivated by the work of Cai and Su [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 81}, 103514 (2010)], we propose a new type of interaction in dark sector, which can change its sign when our universe changes from deceleration to acceleration. We consider the cosmological evolution of quintessence and phantom with this type of interaction, and find that there are some scaling attractors which can help to alleviate the cosmological coincidence problem. Our results also show that this new type of interaction can bring new features to cosmology.
The unifying approach to early-time and late-time universe based on phantom cosmology is proposed. We consider gravity-scalar system which contains usual potential and scalar coupling function in front of kinetic term. As a result, the possibility of phantom-non-phantom transition appears in such a way that universe could have effectively phantom equation of state at early time as well as at late time. In fact, the oscillating universe may have several phantom and non-phantom phases. As a second model we suggest generalized holographic dark energy where infrared cutoff is identified with combi…
Recently a lot of attention has been given to building dark energy models in which the equation-of-state parameter $w$ can cross the phantom divide $w=-1$. However, to our knowledge, these models with crossing the phantom divide only provide the possibility that $w$ can cross -1. They do not answer another question: {\em why crossing phantom divide occurs recently?} Since in many existing models whose equation-of-state parameter can cross the phantom divide, $w$ undulates around -1 randomly, {\em why are we living in an epoch $w<-1$?} This can be regarded as the second cosmological coincidence…
We study a holographic model for the dark energy considered recently in the literature which postulates an energy density $ρ\sim R$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar curvature. We obtain a cosmological scenario that comes from considering two non-interacting fluids along a reasonable Ansatz for the cosmic coincidence parameter. We adjust the involved parameters in the model according to the observational data and we show that the equation of state for the dark energy experience a cross through the -1 barrier. In addition, we find a disagreement in these parameters with respect to an approach from…
In the Ijjas-Steinhardt cyclic model, the universe passes through phases dominated by radiation, matter, and a dark energy scalar field, with the value of the scale factor increasing with each cycle. Since each cycle terminates in a finite time, it is straightforward to calculate the fraction of time that the universe spends in a state for which the matter and dark energy densities have comparable magnitudes; when this fraction is large, it can be taken as a solution of the coincidence problem. This solution of the coincidence problem requires a relatively short lifetime for each cycle, but un…
In this assignment we try to probe the role played by torsion in the current scenario of coincidence and devise a set-up for its realization. In order to model the scenario, the energy arising from the torsion component is considered analogous to dark energy. An interaction between dark energy and dark matter is considered, which is by far the best possible tool to realize the coincidence. A set-up is designed and a constraint equation is obtained which screens the models of \textit{f(T)} gravity that can successfully accommodate the stationary scenario in its framework, from those which canno…
In this paper we investigate possible solutions to the coincidence problem in flat phantom dark energy models with a constant dark energy equation of state and quintessence models with a linear scalar field potential. These models are representative of a broader class of cosmological scenarios in which the universe has a finite lifetime. We show that, in the absence of anthropic constraints, including a prior probability for the models inversely proportional to the total lifetime of the universe excludes models very close to the $Λ{\rm CDM}$ model. This relates a cosmological solution to the c…
In this paper, we study the dynamics of non-interacting and interacting holographic dark energy models in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. As system's infra-red cut-off we consider the future event horizon. The motivation of this work is to use the logarithmic form of the Brans-Dicke scalar field, $ϕ\propto ln(α+βa)$, where $α$ and $β$ are constants and `a' is the scalar factor as proposed Kumar and Singh in a recent work to study the new agegraphic dark energy models. We find the time-dependent equation of state parameter and deceleration parameter which describe the phase transition of t…
We consider the possibility that the total dark energy (DE) of the Universe is made out of two dynamical components of different nature: a variable cosmological term, Lambda, and a dynamical ``cosmon'', X, possibly interacting with Lambda but not with matter -- which remains conserved. We call this scenario the LXCDM model. One possibility for X would be a scalar field, but it is not the only one. The overall equation of state (EOS) of the LXCDM model can effectively appear as quintessence or phantom energy depending on the mixture of the two components. Both the dynamics of Lambda and of X co…
Hybrid Chaplygin gas model is put forward, in which the gases play the role of dark energy. For this model the coincidence problem is greatly alleviated. The effective equation of state of the dark energy may cross the phantom divide $w=-1$. Furthermore, the crossing behaviour is decoupled from any gravity theories. In the present model, $w<-1$ is only a transient behaviour. There is a de Sitter attractor in the future infinity. Hence, the big rip singularity, which often afflicts the models with matter whose effective equation of state less than -1, is naturally disappear. There exist stable …
We examine phantom dark energy models derived from a scalar field with a negative kinetic term for which V(phi) approaches infinity asymptotically. All such models can be divided into three classes, corresponding to an equation of state parameter w with asymptotic behavior w -> -1, w -> w_0 < -1, and w -> infinity. We derive the conditions on the potential V(phi) which lead to each of these three types of behavior. For models with w -> -1, we derive the conditions on V(phi) which determine whether or not such models produce a future big rip. Observational constraints are derived on two classes…
By the assumption that the thermodynamics second law is valid, we study the possibility of $ω=-1$ crossing in interacting holographic dark energy model. Depending on the choice of the horizon and the interaction, the transition from quintessence to phantom regime and subsequently from phantom to quintessence phase may be possible. The second transition avoids the big rip singularity. We compute the dark energy density at transition time and show that by choosing appropriate parameters we can alleviate the coincidence problem.
We here investigate the model of interacting dark energy in the context of five dimensional brane cosmology. The effective equations of state of dark energy are evaluated for various choices of the variable time dependent cosmological constant. We have found that the interacting dark energy obeys the phantom divide/crossing scenario in this generalized model. It is also shown that interacting dark energy in this generalized model also resolves the cosmic coincidence problem.
We show that vector theories on cosmological scales are excellent candidates for dark energy. We consider two different examples, both are theories with no dimensional parameters nor potential terms, with natural initial conditions in the early universe and the same number of free parameters as LCDM. The first one exhibits scaling behaviour during radiation and a strong phantom phase today, ending in a "big-freeze" singularity. This model provides the best fit to date for the SNIa Gold dataset. The second theory we consider is standard electromagnetism. We show that a temporal electromagnetic …
We show that if the Lagrangean for a scalar field coupled to General Relativity only contains derivatives, then it is possible to completely deparametrise the theory. This means that 1.Physical observables, i.e. functions which Poisson commute with the spatial diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints of General Relativity, can be easily constructed. 2. The physical time evolution of those observables is generated by a natural physical Hamiltonian which is (constrained to be) positive. The mechanism by which this works is due to Brown and Kuchař. In order that the physical Hamiltonian is clos…
Dynamical dark energy (DE) has been proposed to explain various aspects of the cosmological constant (CC) problem(s). For example, it is very difficult to accept that a strictly constant Lambda-term constitutes the ultimate explanation for the DE in our Universe. It is also hard to acquiesce in the idea that we accidentally happen to live in an epoch where the CC contributes an energy density value right in the ballpark of the rapidly diluting matter density. It should perhaps be more plausible to conceive that the vacuum energy, is actually a dynamical quantity as the Universe itself. More ge…
It is proved that in order to obtain a model of the accelerated cosmic expansion the thing one only need to do is to add a perturbation term to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. This term leads to some symmetry breaking terms in the fields equation, which makes the cosmic expansion accelerating. A vacuum de Sitter solution is obtained. A new explanation of the acceleration of the cosmic expansion is presented. In this model the changing of the expansion from decelerating to accelerating is an intrinsic property of the universe without need of an exotic dark energy. The acceleration of the cosmi…
It is performed a detailed dynamical analysis for a bulk viscosity model in the full Israel-Stewart formalism for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. In our study we have considered the total cosmic fluid constituted by radiation, dark matter and dark energy. The dark matter fluid is treated as an imperfect fluid which has a bulk viscosity that depends on its energy density in the usual form $ξ(ρ_{m})=ξ_{0} ρ_{m}^{1/2}$, whereas the other components are assumed to behave as perfect fluids with constant EoS parameter. We show that the thermal history of the Universe is reprodu…
We investigate the interacting holographic dark energy (HDE) with Granda-Oliveros (GO) IR-cutoff in the framework of Brans-Dicke (BD) cosmology. We obtain the equation of state (EoS) parameter of HDE, $w_D$, the effective EoS parameter $w_{\mathrm{eff}}$, the deceleration parameter $q $ and the squared of sound speed $v_s^2$ in a flat FRW universe. We show that at late time the cosmic coincidence problem can be alleviated. Also we show that for non-interacting case, HDE can give a unified dark matter-dark energy profile in BD cosmology, except that it cannot solve the coincidence problem in th…
In this paper, an interacting holographic dark energy model with Hubble horizon as an infra-red cut-off is considered in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. We propose a logarithmic form $ϕ\propto ln(α+βa)$ of the Brans-Dicke scalar field to alleviate the problems of interacting holographic dark energy models in Brans-Dicke theory. We find that the equation of state parameter $w_h$ and deceleration parameter $q$ are negative in the early time which shows the early time inflation. During the evolution the sign of parameter $q$ changes from negative to positive which means that the Universe exp…
We study the evolution of the universe by assuming an integrated model, which involves interacting dark energy and holographic principle with Hubble scale as IR cutoff. First we determined the interaction rate at which matter is converting to dark energy. In the next step, we evaluated the equation of state parameter which describes the nature of dark energy. Our result predicts that the present state of the universe is dominated by quintessence type dark energy and it will become phantom dominated in near future. Again our analysis successfully addresses the problem of present accelerated exp…
We study cosmological dynamics of an extended gravitational theory that gravity is coupled non-minimally with derivatives of a dark energy component and there is also a phenomenological interaction between the dark energy and dark matter. Depending on the direction of energy flow between the dark sectors, the phenomenological interaction gets two different signs. We show that this feature affects the existence of attractor solution, the rate of growth of perturbations and stability of the solutions. By considering an exponential potential as a self-interaction potential of the scalar field, we…
In this work we explore some cosmological properties coming from the particle and future horizons when are considered as candidates to model the dark energy sector within a holographic context in a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe; we focus on some thermodynamics characteristics of the resulting dark energy scenario. Within the interacting scheme for cosmological fluids we obtain that in the dark sector, the dark energy fluid will always have negative entropy production and additionally, the positivity for the entropy and temperature can not be guaranteed simultaneously; this …
Dark energy models inspired by the cosmological holographic principle are studied in homogeneous isotropic spacetime with a general choice for the dark energy density $ρ_d=3(αH^2+β\dot{H})$. Special choices of the parameters enable us to obtain three different holographic models, including the holographic Ricci dark energy(RDE) model. Effect of interaction between dark matter and dark energy on the dynamics of those models are investigated for different popular forms of interaction. It is found that crossing of phantom divide can be avoided in RDE models for $β>0.5$ irrespective of the presenc…
Motivated by a recent work of one of us [1], we extend it by using quantum (or entropy) corrected new agegraphic dark energy in the Brans-Dicke cosmology. The correction terms are motivated from the loop quantum gravity which is one of the competitive theories of quantum gravity. Taking the non-flat background spacetime along with the conformal age of the universe as the length scale, we derive the dynamical equation of state of dark energy and the deceleration parameter. An important consequence of this study is the phantom divide scenario with entropy-corrected new agegraphic dark energy. Mo…
In this work we consider the entropy-corrected version of interacting holographic dark energy (HDE), in the non-flat universe enclosed by apparent horizon. Two corrections of entropy so-called logarithmic 'LEC' and power-law 'PLEC' in HDE model with apparent horizon as an IR-cutoff are studied. The ratio of dark matter to dark energy densities $u$, equation of state parameter $w_D$ and deceleration parameter $q$ are obtained. We show that the cosmic coincidence is satisfied for both interacting models. By studying the effect of interaction in EoS parameter, we see that the phantom divide may b…
In this paper we have established an asymptotically conical Morris-Thorne wormhole solution supported by anisotropic matter fluid and a global monopole charge in the framework of a $1+3$ dimensional gravity minimally coupled to a triplet of scalar fields $ϕ^a$, resulting from the breaking of a global $O(3)$ symmetry. For the anisotropic matter fluid we have considered the equation of state (EoS) given by $\mathcal{P}_r=ωρ$, with a consequence $ω<-1$, implying a so-called phantom energy at the throat of the wormhole which violates the energy conditions. In addition, we study the weak gravitatio…
We consider a set of non-linear interactions between dark matter and dark energy which comprises couplings proportional to products of (powers of) the energy densities of both dark components and of the total energy. We demonstrate that under such conditions the final state of the Universe may differ substantially from that of the standard LCDM model. In particular, the ratio of the energy densities of dark matter and dark energy may approach a stable finite value or oscillate about such a value. Stationary solutions of this type require a phantom-type "bare" equation of state of the dark ener…
In the recent literature on dark energy (DE) model building we have learnt that cosmologies with variable cosmological parameters can mimic more traditional DE pictures exclusively based on scalar fields (e.g. quintessence and phantom). In a previous work we have illustrated this situation within the context of a renormalization group running cosmological term, Lambda. Here we analyze the possibility that both the cosmological term and the gravitational coupling, G, are running parameters within a more general framework (a variant of the so-called ``LXCDM models'') in which the DE fluid can be…
The $f(T,T_G)$ class of gravitational modification, based on the quadratic torsion scalar $T$, as well as on the new quartic torsion scalar $T_G$ which is the teleparallel equivalent of the Gauss-Bonnet term, is a novel theory, different from both $f(T)$ and $f(R,G)$ ones. We perform a detailed dynamical analysis of a spatially flat universe governed by the simplest non-trivial model of $f(T,T_G)$ gravity which does not introduce a new mass scale. We find that the universe can result in dark-energy dominated, quintessence-like, cosmological-constant-like or phantom-like solutions, according to…
Cosmological consequences of a string-motivated dark energy scenario featuring a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant are investigated. We study the evolution of the universe in such a model, identifying its key properties. The evolution of the homogeneous background and cosmological perturbations, both at large and small scales, are calculated. The impact of the coupling on galaxy distributions and the cosmic microwave background is examined. We find the coupling provides a mechanism to viably onset the late acceleration, to alleviate the coincidence problem, and furthermore to …
We discuss the possible consistency of the recently discovered Type Ia supernovae at z>1 with models in which dark energy is strongly coupled to a significant fraction of dark matter, and in which an (asymptotic) accelerated phase exists where dark matter and dark energy scale in the same way. Such a coupling has been suggested for a possible solution of the coincidence problem, and is also motivated by string cosmology models of "late time" dilaton interactions. Our analysis shows that, for coupled dark energy models, the recent data are still consistent with acceleration starting as early as…
Weyl's idea on scale invariance was resurrected by Cheng in 1988. The requirement of local scale invariance leads to a completely new vector field, which we call the ``Cheng-Weyl vector field''. The Cheng-Weyl vector field couples only to a scalar field and the gravitational field naturally. It does not interact with other known matters in the standard model of particle physics. In the present work, the (generalized) Cheng-Weyl vector field coupled with the scalar field and its cosmological application are investigated. A mixture of the scalar field and a so-called ``cosmic triad'' of three mu…
This work is a comprehensive investigation of the Yang-Mills condensate (YMC) dark energy (DE) model, which is extended to include the 3-loop quantum corrections. We study its cosmic evolution and the possibility of crossing phantom divide $w=-1$, examine in details the Hubble parameter $H$, the deceleration parameter $q$, the statefinder diagnosis $(r,s)$, and the $w-w^\prime$ diagnosis of the model without and with interaction, and compare our results with other DE models. Besides, by using the observational data of type Ia supernovae (SNIa), the shift parameter from cosmic microwave backgro…
The idea that the cosmological term, Lambda, should be a time dependent quantity in cosmology is a most natural one. It is difficult to conceive an expanding universe with a strictly constant vacuum energy density, namely one that has remained immutable since the origin of time. A smoothly evolving vacuum energy density that inherits its time-dependence from cosmological functions, such as the Hubble rate or the scale factor, is not only a qualitatively more plausible and intuitive idea, but is also suggested by fundamental physics, in particular by quantum field theory (QFT) in curved space-t…
