Notwithstanding it is well known that von Neumann's projection postulate is inapplicable to most realistic measurement procedures, it keeps haunting the foundations of quantum mechanics. In particular its applicability to EPR experiments is often assumed. In the present contribution this problem is considered from the point of view of a quantum mechanical theory of measurement, allowing a treatment of projection in EPR experiments as a special case of conditional preparation. The conditions are spelled out under which the postulate may be applicable.
In operator algebra theory, a conditional expectation is usually assumed to be a projection map onto a sub-algebra. In the paper, a further type of conditional expectation and an extension of the Lueders - von Neumann measurement to observables with continuous spectra are considered; both are defined for a single operator and become a projection map only if they exist for all operators. Criteria for the existence of the different types of conditional expectation and of the extension of the Lueders - von Neumann measurement are presented, and the question whether they coincide is studied. All t…
Quantum operations arise naturally in many fields of quantum information theory and quantum computing. One of the simplest example of quantum operation is the von Neumann-Lueders measurement. Destruction of states in quantum mechanics can be treated as a supplement to the von Neumann-Lueders measurement [P. Caban, J. Rembielinski, K. A. Smolinski and Z. Walczak, J. Phys. A 35, 3265 (2002)]. We show that destruction of states in one-qudit system is a quantum operation by finding its Kraus representation.
The topics of the paper are: a) Some anti-linear maps governing EPR tasks if no reference bases are distinguished. b) Imperfect teleportation and the composition rule. The ancilla is supposed pure but otherwise arbitrary. c) Quantum telportation with distributed measurements. d) Remarks on EPR with a mixed state, triggered by a Lueders measurement.
We show that the projection postulate plays a crucial role in the discussion on the so called "quantum nonlocality", in particular in the EPR-argument. We stress that the original von Neumann projection postulate was crucially modified by extending it to observables with degenerate spectra (the Lüders postulate) and we show that this modification is highly questionable from a physical point of view, and it is the real source of "quantum nonlocality". The use of the original von Neumann postulate eliminates this problem: instead of "action at the distance"-nonlocality, we obtain a classical mea…
In a recent paper [quant-ph/9910066], Arens and Varadarajan gave a characterization of what they call EPR-states on a bipartite composite quantum system. By definition, such states imply perfect correlation between suitable pairs of observables in the two subsystems, and the task is to determine all such correlated pairs for a given state. In this note the argument is shortened and simplified, and at the same time extended to observables in general von Neumann algebras, which naturally arise in quantum field theory.
Variation of the von Neumann entropy by the Lorentz transformation is discussed. Taking the spin-singlet state in the center of mass frame, the von Neumann entropy in the laboratory frame is calculated from the reduced density matrix obtained by taking the trace over 4-momentum after the Lorentz transformation. As the model to discuss the EPR spin correlation, it is supposed that one parent particle splits into a superposition state of various pair states in various directions. Computing the von Neumann entropy and the Shannon entropy, we have shown a global behavior of the entropy to see a re…
We performed a comparative analysis of the arguments of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen -- EPR, 1935 (against the completeness of QM) and the theoretical formalism of QM (due to von Neumann, 1932). We found that the EPR considerations do not match at all with the von Neumann's theory. Thus EPR did not criticize the real theoretical model of QM. The root of EPR's paradoxical conclusion on incompleteness of QM is the misuse of von Neumann's projection postulate. EPR applied this postulate to observables with degenerate spectra (which is totally forbidden by the axiomatics of QM).
Modern development of quantum technologies based on quantum information theory stimulated analysis of proposed computational, cryptographic and teleportational schemes from the viewpoint of quantum foundations. It is evident that not all mathematical calculations performed in complex Hilbert space can be directly realized in physical space. Recently by analyzing the original EPR paper we found that they argument was based on the misuse of the von Neumann's projection postulate. Opposite to von Neumann, Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) applied this postulate to observables represented by oper…
We show how to construct loss-tolerant linear steering inequalities using a generic set of von Neumann measurements that are violated by $d$-dimensional states, and that rely only upon a simple property of the set of measurements used (the maximal overlap between measurement directions). Using these inequalities we show that the critical detection efficiency above which $n$ von Neumann measurements can demonstrate steering is $1/n$. We show furthermore that using our construction and high dimensional states allows for steering demonstrations which are also highly robust to depolarising noise a…
We show that the von Neumann--Lueders collapse rules in quantum mechanics always select the unique state that maximises the quantum relative entropy with respect to the premeasurement state, subject to the constraint that the postmeasurement state has to be compatible with the knowledge gained in the measurement. This way we provide an information theoretic characterisation of quantum collapse rules by means of the maximum relative entropy principle.
Quantum mechanics allows for multiple predictions for the outcome of an EPR experiment. The correct calculation must be used, guided by the physical conditions of the experiment. The quantum joint prediction for EPR correlation is derived and shown to involve a single sampling. The solution for separated measurement, where there are two private samplings, is then developed using orthodox quantum mechanics with Luders' rule for state projection on measurement. The separated solution is shown to duplicate the predictions of the quantum joint solution. However, it is shown that this solution requ…
A certain generalization of the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics beyond operator algebras is considered. The approach is based on the concept of conditional probability and the interpretation of the Lueders - von Neumann quantum measurement as a probability conditionalization rule. A major result shows that the operator algebras must be replaced by order-unit spaces with some specific properties in the generalized approach, and it is analyzed under which conditions these order-unit spaces become Jordan algebras. An application of this result provides a characterization of the projec…
In the quantum mechanical Hilbert space formalism, the probabilistic interpretation is a later ad-hoc add-on, more or less enforced by the experimental evidence, but not motivated by the mathematical model itself. A model involving a clear probabilistic interpretation from the very beginning is provided by the quantum logics with unique conditional probabilities. It includes the projection lattices in von Neumann algebras and here probability conditionalization becomes identical with the state transition of the Lueders - von Neumann measurement process. This motivates the definition of a hiera…
Assume the quantum state of a bipartite system is known. The result of local von Neumann measurements can be described by maps from one subsystem to the other one. Main properties of these antilinear ''EPR-channel'' maps are shortly discussed. Talk in honour of Jan Lopuszanski.
We discuss coupling of violation of Bell's inequality and non-Kolmogorovness of statistical data in the EPR-Bohm experiment. We emphasize that nonlocalty and "death of realism" are only sufficient, but not necessary conditions of non-Kolmogorovness. There can be found other sufficient conditions of non-Kolmogorovness and, hence, violation of Bell's inequality. We find one important source of non-Kolmogorovness by analyzing axiomatics of quantum mechanics. We pay attention to the postulate (due to von Neumann and Dirac) on simultaneous measurement of quantum observables given by commuting opera…
We demonstrate that for two canonically conjugate operators $\hat{q},\hat {p} $,the global correlation $\langle \hat{q} \hat {p} + \hat{p} \hat {q} \rangle -2 \langle \hat{q}\rangle \langle \hat {p}\rangle$, and the local correlations $\langle \hat{q} \rangle (p) - \langle \hat{q}\rangle$ and $\langle \hat{p} \rangle (q)-\langle \hat {p}\rangle$ can be measured exactly by Von Neumann-Arthurs-Kelly joint quadrature measurements . These correlations provide a sensitive experimental test of quantum phase space probabilities quite distinct from the probability densities of $ q,p $. E.g. for EPR st…
We propose partial measurements as a conceptual tool to understand how to operate with counterfactual claims in quantum physics. Indeed, unlike standard von Neumann measurements, partial measurements can be reversed probabilistically. We first analyze the consequences of this rather unusual feature for the principle of superposition, for the complementarity principle, and for the issue of hidden variables. Then we move on to exploring non-local contexts, by reformulating the EPR paradox, the quantum teleportation experiment, and the entanglement-swapping protocol for the situation in which one…
Starting from an abstract setting for the Lueders - von Neumann quantum measurement process and its interpretation as a probability conditionalization rule in a non-Boolean event structure, the author derived a certain generalization of operator algebras in a preceding paper. This is an order-unit space with some specific properties. It becomes a Jordan operator algebra under a certain set of additional conditions, but does not own a multiplication operation in the most general case. A major objective of the present paper is the search for such examples of the structure mentioned above that do…
