We demonstrate how the matrix-product state formalism provides a flexible structure to solve the constrained optimization problem associated with the sequential generation of entangled multiqubit states under experimental restrictions. We consider a realistic scenario in which an ancillary system with a limited number of levels performs restricted sequential interactions with qubits in a row. The proposed method relies on a suitable local optimization procedure, yielding an efficient recipe for the realistic and approximate sequential generation of any entangled multiqubit state. We give paradigmatic examples that may be of interest for theoretical and experimental developments.
We show that an arbitrary relative phase can be extracted from a multiqubit two-component (MTC) entangled state by local Hadamard transformations and measurements along a single basis only. In addition, how to distinguish a MTC entangled state with an arbitrary entanglement degree and relative phase from a class of multiqubit mixed states is discussed.
We explore some basic entanglement features of multiqubit systems that are relevant for the development of algorithms for searching highly entangled states. In particular, we compare the behaviours of multiqubit entanglement measures based (i) on the von Neumann entropy of marginal density matrices and (ii) on the linear entropy of those matrices.
he multiqubit entangled states are coherently controlled in the quantum spin systems composed of $N+1$ interacting antiferromagnetic molecular rings. The tunable intermolecular couplings arise from the local exchange interactions between electron spins of $N$ circumjacent magnets and those of one central molecular ring. The quantum dynamics of such system is analytically deduced by the effective spin hamiltonian with anisotropic Heisenberg couplings. It is found that entangled $W$ states can be generated with a high precision under the circumstance of quantum fluctuations. The multiqubit entan…
We find the nearest product states for arbitrary generalized W states of n qubits, and show that the nearest product state is essentially unique if the W state is highly entangled. It is specified by a unit vector in Euclidean n-dimensional space. We use this duality between unit vectors and highly entangled W states to find the geometric measure of entanglement of such states.
Recently, Paolo Facchi et al. [Phys. Rev. A. 77, 060304 (R) (2008)] introduced the notion of maximally multipartite entangled states of n qubits. Here, we give a criterion for faithful controlled teleportation of an arbitrary two-qubit state via a five-qubit entangled state and obtain the general relation between the genuine five-qubit entangled state and controlled teleportation. This criterion can be extended to teleportation of an arbitrary N-qubit state using 2N+1-qubit entangled state. Furthermore, we study the optimal match of measuring basis and quantum channel.
We suggest and demonstrate a novel source of two-photon multipartite entangled states which exploits the transverse spatial structure of spontaneous parametric downconversion together with a programmable spatial light modulator (SLM). The 1D SLM is used to perform polarization entanglement purification and to realize arbitrary phase-gates between polarization and momentum degrees of freedom of photons. We experimentally demonstrate our scheme by generating two-photon three qubit linear cluster states with high fidelity using a diode laser pump with a limited coherence time and power on the cry…
When some of the parties of a multipartite entangled pure state are lost, the question arises whether the residual mixed state is also entangled, in which case the initial entangled pure state is said to be robust against particle loss. In this paper, we investigate this entanglement robustness for $N$-qubit pure states. We identify exhaustively all entangled states that are fragile, i.e., not robust, with respect to the loss of any single qubit of the system. We also study the entanglement robustness properties of symmetric states and put these properties in the perspective of the classificat…
It is shown that while entanglement remains a significant factor in discriminating a set of mutually orthogonal entangled states perfectly by local operations and classical communication (LOCC), entanglement content is not. In particular, for a class of entangled multi-qubit states, the maximum number of perfectly LOCC distinguishable orthogonal states is shown to be independent of the average entanglement of the states, and the spatial configuration with respect to which LOCC operations may be carried out. It is also pointed out that the make-up of an ensemble, that is, whether it consists on…
Entanglement monogamy is a fundamental property of multipartite entangled states. We investigate the monogamy relations for multiqubit generalized W-class states. Analytical monogamy inequalities are obtained for the concurrence of assistance, the entanglement of formation and the entanglement of assistance.
Recently, we introduced negativity fonts as the basic units of multipartite entanglement in pure states. We show that the relation between global negativity of partial transpose of N- qubit state and linear entropy of reduced single qubit state yields an expression for global negativity in terms of determinants of negativity fonts. Transformation equations for determinants of negativity fonts under local unitaries (LU's) are useful to construct LU invariants such as degree four and degree six invariants for four qubit states. The difference of squared negativity and N-tangle is an N qubit inva…
We propose a way for transferring Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from $n$ qubits in one cavity onto another $n$ qubits in the other cavity. It is shown that $n$-qubit GHZ states $α\left\vert 00...0\right\rangle +β\left\vert 11...1\right\rangle $ with arbitrary degree of entanglement can be transferred deterministically. Both of the GHZ state transfer and the operation time are not dependent on the number of qubits, and there is no need of measurement. This proposal is quite general and can be applied to accomplish the same task for a wide range of physical qubits. Furthermo…
We propose a multipartite extension of Matsumoto and Hayashi's distortion-free entanglement concentration protocol, which takes $n$ copies of a general multipartite state and, via local measurements, produces a maximally-entangled multipartite state between local spaces of dimensions $\sim 2^{n E_i}$, where $E_i$ are the local entropies of the input state. However, the extended protocol is generally not universal in the sense that for the same measurement outcomes, the output state will still depend on the input state. Our main result is that when specialized to any state in the multiqubit W c…
Global phase factors of topological origin, resulting from cyclic local $\rm{SU}$ evolution, called topological phases, were first described in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 230403 (2003)], in the case of entangled qubit pairs. In this paper we investigate topological phases in multi-qubit systems as the result of cyclic local $\rm{SU(2)}$ evolution. These phases originate from the topological structure of the local $\rm{SU(2)}$-orbits and are an attribute of most entangled multi-qubit systems. We discuss the relation between topological phases and SLOCC-invariant polynomials and give examples w…

Different from the previous works on generating entangled states, this work is focused on how to transfer the prepared entangled states onto memory qubits for protecting them against decoherence. We here consider a physical system consisting of $n$ operation qubits and $2n$ memory qubits placed in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. A method is presented for transferring $n$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states from the operation qubits (i.e., information processing cells) onto the memory qubits (i.e., information memory elements with long decoherence time). The transferred…
We propose a 2N qubit entangled channel that can be used to teleport N qubits in a network to a single receiver. We describe the construction of this channel and explicitly demonstrate how the protocol works. The protocol is different from teleportation using $N$ Bell pairs shared between $N$ senders and a single receiver, as it ensures that all parties have to participate in order for the teleportation to be successful. This can be advantageous in various scenarios and we discuss potential application of this protocol to voting.
For multipartite entangled states, entanglement monogamy is an important property. We investigate the monogamy relations for multiqubit generalized W-class states. We present new analytical monogamy inequalities satisfied by the $x$-th power of the dual of convex-roof extended negativity, namely CRENOA, for $x\geq2$ and $x\leq0$. As for The squared Rényi-$α$ entanglement (SR$α$E) with $α$ in the region $[(\sqrt 7 - 1)/2,(\sqrt {13} - 1)/2]$, we show the upper bound of SR$α$E.
We present a physical setup with which it is possible to produce arbitrary symmetric long-lived multiqubit entangled states in the internal ground levels of photon emitters, including the paradigmatic GHZ and W states. In the case of three emitters, where each tripartite entangled state belongs to one of two well-defined entanglement classes, we prove a one-to-one correspondence between well-defined sets of experimental parameters, i.e., locally tunable polarizer orientations, and multiqubit entanglement classes inside the symmetric subspace.
We investigate the generation of multipartite entangled state in a system of N quantum dots embedded in a microcavity and examine the emergence of genuine multipartite entanglement by three different characterizations of entanglement. At certain times of dynamical evolution one can generate multipartite entangled coherent exciton states or multiqubit $W$ states by initially preparing the cavity field in a superposition of coherent states or the Fock state with one photon, respectively. Finally we study environmental effects on multipartite entanglement generation and find that the decay rate f…
We present a comprehensive study of maximally entangled symmetric states of arbitrary numbers of qubits in the sense of the maximal mixedness of the one-qubit reduced density operator. A general criterion is provided to easily identify whether given symmetric states are maximally entangled in that respect or not. We show that these maximally entangled symmetric (MES) states are the only symmetric states for which the expectation value of the associated collective spin of the system vanishes, as well as in corollary the dipole moment of the Husimi function. We establish the link between this ki…
We report the exact entanglement cost of a class of multiqubit bound entangled states, computed in the context of a universal model for multipartite state preparation. The exact amount of entanglement needed to prepare such states are determined by first obtaining lower bounds using a cut-set approach, and then providing explicit local protocols achieving the lower bound.
Local quantum operations relating multiqubit flip (0-1) and exchange symmetric (FES) states, with the maximum possible probability of success, have been determined by assuming that the states are converted via one-shot FES transformations. It has been shown that certain entangled states are more robust than others, in the sense that the optimum probability of converting these robust states to the states lying in the close neighborhood of separable ones vanish under local FES operations.
We investigate sharing of bipartite entanglement in a scenario where half of an entangled pair is possessed and projectively measured by one observer, called Alice, while the other half is subjected to measurements performed sequentially, independently, and unsharply, by multiple observers, called Bobs. We find that there is a limit on the number of observers in this entanglement distribution scenario. In particular, for a two-qubit maximally entangled initial shared state, no more than twelve Bobs can detect entanglement with a single Alice for arbitrary -- possibly unequal -- sharpness param…
We construct coefficient matrices of size 2^l by 2^{n-l} associated with pure n-qubit states and prove the invariance of the ranks of the coefficient matrices under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). The ranks give rise to a simple way of partitioning pure n-qubit states into inequivalent families and distinguishing degenerate families from one another under SLOCC. Moreover, the classification scheme via the ranks of coefficient matrices can be combined with other schemes to build a more refined classification scheme. To exemplify we classify the nine families of …
Matrix Product States can be defined as the family of quantum states that can be sequentially generated in a one-dimensional system. We introduce a new family of states which extends this definition to two dimensions. Like in Matrix Product States, expectation values of few body observables can be efficiently evaluated and, for the case of translationally invariant systems, the correlation functions decay exponentially with the distance. We show that such states are a subclass of Projected Entangled Pair States and investigate their suitability for approximating the ground states of local Hami…
We show that qubits coupled sequentially to a mesoscopic static completely mixed spin bath via the Heisenberg interaction can become highly entangled. Straightforward protocols for the generation of multipartite entangled (Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-)states are presented. We show the feasibility of an experimental realization in a quantum dot by the hyperfine interaction of an electron with the nuclear spins.
We propose a scheme for the generation of two-mode entangled states between two spatially separated cavities. It utilizes a two-level atom sequentially coupling to two high-Q cavities with a strong classical driving field. It is shown that by suitably choosing the intensities and detunings of the fields and coherent control of the dynamics, several different entangled states such as entangled coherent states and Bell states can be produced between the modes of the two cavities.
Violation of a Bell inequality certifies that the underlying state must be entangled in a device-independent way, although there may exist some entangled states which do not violate such an inequality. On the other hand, for every entangled state, it is possible to find a hermitian operator called entanglement witness that can detect entanglement through some local measurements in a device-dependent method. The methods are significantly fragile to lossy detectors. To avoid such difficulties, measurement-device-independent entanglement witness based on a semi-quantum nonlocal game was proposed …
We use semiconductor quantum dots, "artificial atoms," to implement a scheme for deterministic generation of long strings of entangled photons in a cluster state, an important resource for quantum information processing. We demonstrate a prototype device which produces strings of a few hundred photons in which the entanglement persists over 5 sequential photons. The implementation follows a proposal by Lindner and Rudolph (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2009) which suggested periodic timed excitation of a precessing electron spin as a mechanism for entangling the electron spin with the polarization of the s…
We study the sequential generation of entangled photonic and atomic multi-qubit states in the realm of cavity QED. We extend the work of C. Schoen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 110503 (2005)], where it was shown that all states generated in a sequential manner can be classified efficiently in terms of matrix-product states. In particular, we consider two scenarios: photonic multi-qubit states sequentially generated at the cavity output of a single-photon source and atomic multi-qubit states generated by their sequential interaction with the same cavity mode.
We investigate the witnessing of two-qubit entangled states by sequential and independent pairs of observers, with both observers of each pair acting independently on their part of the shared state from spatially separated laboratories, and subsequently passing their qubits to the next pair in the sequence. It has previously been conjectured that not more than one pair of observers can detect Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt "Bell-nonlocal" correlations in a similar set-up. This is intriguing since it is possible to have an arbitrarily long sequence of Bell-nonlocal correlations when only a single o…
There is currently much interest in the recycling of entangled systems, for use in quantum information protocols by sequential observers. In this work, we study the sequential generation of Bell nonlocality via recycling one or both components of two-qubit states. We first give a description of two-valued qubit measurements in terms of measurement bias, strength, and reversibility, and derive useful tradeoff relations between them. Then, we derive one-sided monogamy relations for unbiased observables, that strengthen the recent Conjecture in [S. Cheng {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{104}, L…
