We use a series of cosmological N-body simulations and various analytic models to study the evolution of the matter power spectrum in real space in a ΛCold Dark Matter universe. We compare the results of N-body simulations against three analytical model predictions; standard perturbation theory, renormalized perturbation theory, and the closure approximation. We include the effects from finite simulation box size in the comparison. We determine the values of the maximum wavenumbers, k^{lim}_{1%} and k^{lim}_{3%}, below which the analytic models and the simulation results agree to within 1 and 3 percent, respectively. We then provide a simple empirical function which describes the convergence regime determined by comparison between our simulations and the analytical models. We find that if we use the Fourier modes within the convergence regime alone, the characteristic scale of baryon acoustic oscillations can be determined within 1% accuracy from future surveys with a volume of a few h^{-3}Gpc^3 at z\sim1 or z\sim3 in the absence of any systematic distortion of the power spectrum.
We compute the impact of dark energy at last scattering on measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). We show that an early dark energy component can contribute a systematic uncertainty to BAO measurements of up to 2.5%. Whilst this effect turns out to only slightly affect current BAO surveys, the results of future BAO surveys might become biased. We find that BAO surveys alone appear unable to resolve this systematic uncertainty, so supplementary measurements are necessary.
We use the radial baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements of Gaztanaga et al. (2008) to constrain parameters of dark energy models. These constraints are comparable with constraints from other "non-radial" BAO data. The radial BAO data are consistent with the time-independent cosmological constant model but do not rule out time-varying dark energy. When we combine radial BAO and the Kowalski et al. (2008) Union type Ia supernova data we get very tight constraints on dark energy.
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) have recently been observed in the distribution of distant galaxies. The height and location of the BAO peak are strong discriminators of cosmological parameters. Here we consider the ways in which weak gravitational lensing distorts the BAO signal. We find two effects that can affect the height of the BAO peak in the correlation function at the percent level but that do not significantly impact the position of the peak and the measurement of the sound horizon. BAO turn out to be robust cosmological standard rulers.
We use baryon acoustic peak measurements by Eisenstein et al. (2005) and Percival et al. (2007a) and galaxy cluster gas mass fraction measurements of Allen et al. (2008) to constrain parameters of three different dark energy models. For time-independent dark energy, the Percival et al. (2007a) constraints, which make use of the WMAP measurement of the apparent acoustic horizon angle, most effectively constrain a cosmological parameter close to spatial curvature and favor a close to spatially flat model. In a spatially-flat model the Percival et al. (2007a) data less effectively constrain time-…
The angular power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background has been measured out to sufficiently small angular scale to encompass a few acoustic oscillations. We use a phenomenological fit to the angular power spectrum to quantify the statistical significance of these oscillations and discuss the cosmological implications of such a finding.
The baryon acoustic oscillations are a promising route to the precision measure of the cosmological distance scale and hence the measurement of the time evolution of dark energy. We show that the non-linear degradation of the acoustic signature in the correlations of low-redshift galaxies is a correctable process. By suitable reconstruction of the linear density field, one can sharpen the acoustic peak in the correlation function or, equivalently, restore the higher harmonics of the oscillations in the power spectrum. With this, one can achieve better measurements of the acoustic scale for a g…
Baryonic acoustic oscillations imprinted in the galaxy power spectrum provide a promising tool for probing the cosmological distance scale and dark energy. We present results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations aimed at investigating possible systematic errors in the recovery of cosmological distances. We show the robustness of baryonic peaks against nonlinearity, redshift distortions, and mild biases within the linear and quasilinear region at various redshifts. While mildly biased tracers follow the matter power spectrum well, redshift distortions do partially obscure baryonic fe…
The baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) prior to recombination should be imprinted onto the 21cm emission background from the epoch of reionization through the underlying density perturbations. Using an analytical approach for both matter power spectrum (CDM+baryons) and reionization process, we demonstrate the BAO induced signatures on the power spectrum of 21cm emission fluctuations. Future low-frequency radio telescopes such as LOFAR and MWA should be able to detect these weak BAO wiggles with an integration time of $\sim1$ year. A combination of the BAO measurements at different redshifts $…
The expansion of the universe appears to be accelerating, and the mysterious anti-gravity agent of this acceleration has been called ``dark energy''. To measure the dynamics of dark energy, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) can be used. Previous discussions of the BAO dark energy test have focused on direct measurements of redshifts of as many as $10^9$ individual galaxies, by observing the 21cm line or by detecting optical emission. Here we show how the study of acoustic oscillation in the 21 cm brightness can be accomplished by economical three dimensional intensity mapping. If our estimate…
We investigate the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signature in the matter power spectrum due to the quasi-nonlinear clustering of density perturbations. On the basis of the third order perturbation theory, we construct a fitting formula of the damping in an analytic way. This demonstrates that the damping is closely related with the growth factor and the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. Then, we investigate the feasibility of constraining the growth factor through a measurement of the damping of the BAO signature. An extension of our formula including higher order cor…
During its first ~100,000 years, the universe was a fully ionized plasma with a tight coupling by Thompson scattering between the photons and matter. The trade--off between gravitational collapse and photon pressure causes acoustic oscillations in this primordial fluid. These oscillations will leave predictable imprints in the spectra of the cosmic microwave background and the present day matter-density distribution. Recently, the BOOMERANG and MAXIMA teams announced the detection of these acoustic oscillations in the cosmic microwave background (observed at redshift ~1000). Here, we compare t…
Some observations suggest that solar spicules show small amplitude and high frequency oscillations of magneto-acoustic waves, which arise from photospheric granular forcing. We apply the method of MHD seismology to determine the period of kink waves. For this purposes, the oscillations of a magnetic cylinder embedded in a field-free environment is investigated. Finally, diagnostic diagrams displaying the oscillatory period in terms of some equilibrium parameters are provided to allow a comparison between theoretical results and those coming from observations.
The phases as well as the amplitudes of baryonic acoustic oscillations can be extracted out of a galaxy power spectrum and used as a standard ruler in a cosmological test. A non-oscillating phenomenological fitting function is used to extract the oscillatory part of the galaxy power spectrum and to disentangle phase information from amplitude information. The method (FITEX) is tested with simulated data of the Hubble Volume Simulation to include redshift space effects, non-linear structure growth and biasing. A cosmological test is introduced, which compares the extracted oscillations against …
We employ an analytical approach to investigate the signatures of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) on the convergence power spectrum of weak lensing by large scale structure. It is shown that the BAOs wiggles can be found in both of the linear and nonlinear convergence power spectra of weak lensing at about $40\le l\le600$, but they are weaker than that of matter power spectrum. Although the statistical error for LSST are greatly smaller than that of CFHT and SNAP survey especially at about $30<l<300$, they are still larger than the their maximum variations of BAOs wiggles. Thus, the detect…
An acoustic oscillation of the primeval photon-baryon fluid around the decoupling time imprints a characteristic scale in the galaxy distribution today, known as the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale. Several on-going and/or future galaxy surveys aim at detecting and precisely determining the BAO scale so as to trace the expansion history of the universe. We consider nonlinear and redshift-space distortion effects on the shifts of the BAO scale in $k$-space using perturbation theory. The resulting shifts are indeed sensitive to different choices of the definition of the BAO scale, which …
We present the cosmological distance errors achievable using the baryon acoustic oscillations as a standard ruler. We begin from a Fisher matrix formalism that is upgraded from Seo & Eisenstein (2003). We isolate the information from the baryonic peaks by excluding distance information from other less robust sources. Meanwhile we accommodate the Lagrangian displacement distribution into the Fisher matrix calculation to reflect the gradual loss of information in scale and in time due to nonlinear growth, nonlinear bias, and nonlinear redshift distortions. We then show that we can contract the m…
Since type Ia Supernovae (SNe) explode in galaxies, they can, in principle, be used as the same tracer of the large-scale structure as their hosts to measure baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). To realize this, one must obtain a dense integrated sampling of SNe over a large fraction of the sky, which may only be achievable photometrically with future projects such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. The advantage of SN BAOs is that SNe have more uniform luminosities and more accurate photometric redshifts than galaxies, but the disadvantage is that they are transitory and hard to obtain i…
We study the possibility for an observational detection of oscillations due to baryons in the matter power spectrum and suggest a new cosmological test using the angular power spectrum of halos. The "standard rulers" of the proposed test involve overall shape of the matter power spectrum and baryon oscillation peaks in projection, as a function of redshift. Since oscillations are erased at non-linear scales, traces at redshifts greater than 1 are generally preferred. Given the decrease in number density of clusters at high redshift, however, one is forced to use tracers corresponding to galaxy…
We show that 5-minute acoustic oscillations may resonantly convert into Alfv{é}n waves in the $β{\sim}1$ region of the solar atmosphere. Considering the 5-minute oscillations as pumping standing acoustic waves oscillating along unperturbed vertical magnetic field, we find on solving the ideal MHD equations that amplitudes of Alfv{é}n waves with twice the period and wavelength of acoustic waves exponentially grow in time when the sound and Alfv{é}n speeds are equal, i.e. $c_s \approx v_A$. The region of the solar atmosphere where this equality takes place we call a {\it swing layer}. The amplif…
Observations show the increase of high-frequency wave power near magnetic network cores and active regions in the solar lower atmosphere. This phenomenon can be explained by the interaction of acoustic waves with a magnetic field. We consider small-scale, bipolar, magnetic field canopy structure near the network cores and active regions overlying field-free cylindrical cavities of the photosphere. Solving the plasma equations we get the analytical dispersion relation of acoustic oscillations in the field-free cavity area. We found that the m = 1 mode, where m is azimuthal wave number, cannot b…
Aims. To study intensity oscillations in the solar chromosphere/corona above a quiet-Sun magnetic network. Methods. We analyse the time series of He II 256.32, Fe XI 188.23 and Fe XII 195.12 spectral lines observed by EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board Hinode near the south pole. Then we use a standard wavelet tool to produce power spectra of intensity oscillations above the magnetic network. Results. We get ~7 min intensity oscillations in all spectral lines and ~13 min intensity oscillations only in He II with the probability of ~96-98 %, which probably reflects the process of magneto-a…
We explore the complementarity between two tomographic probes of the universe: baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) and weak lensing (WL). We find that photometric measurements of BAOs alone do not provide very tight constraints on the dark energy equation of state parameters, partially due to our uncertain knowledge of the galaxy bias. WL, on the other hand, is adversely impacted by the uncertainties of the probability distribution of photometric redshift (photo-z) errors. A joint analysis of the two, however, is more robust to these uncertainties and leads to a remarkable improvement over the…
A semi-analytic approach to the computation of the non-linear power-spectrum of dark matter density fluctuations is proposed. The method is based on the Renormalization Group technique and can be applied to any underlying cosmological model. Our prediction on the baryonic acoustic oscillations in a LambdaCDM model accurately fits the results of N-body simulations down to zero redshift, where perturbation theory fails.
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) or baryon wiggles which are present in the galaxy power spectrum at scales 100-150Mpc/h are powerful features with which to constrain cosmology. The potential of these probes is such that these are now included as primary science goals in the planning of several future galaxy surveys. However, there is not a uniquely defined BAO Method in the literature but a range of implementations. We study the assumptions and cosmological performances of three different BAO methods: the full Fourier space power spectrum [P(k)], the `wiggles only' in Fourier space and…
The stochastic excitation of solar oscillations due to turbulent convection is reviewed. A number of different observational results that provide test for solar p-mode excitation theories are described. I discuss how well the stochastic excitation theory does in explaining these observations. The location and properties of sources that excite solar p-modes are also described. Finally, I discuss why solar g-modes should be linearly stable, and estimate the surface velocity amplitudes of low degree g-modes assuming that they are stochastically excited by the turbulent convection in the sun.
Baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) is a powerful probe on the expansion of the universe, shedding light on elusive dark energy and gravity at cosmological scales. BAO measurements through biased tracers of the underlying matter density field, as most proposals do, can reach high statistical accuracy. However, possible scale dependence in bias may induce non-negligible systematical errors, especially for the most ambitious spectroscopic surveys proposed. We show that precision spectroscopic redshift information available in these surveys allows for {\it self calibration} of the galaxy bias and i…
Evolution of a coronal loop in response to an impulsive energy release is numerically modelled. It is shown that the loop density evolution curves exhibit quasi-periodic perturbations with the periods given approximately by the ratio of the loop length to the average sound speed, associated with the second standing harmonics of an acoustic wave. The density perturbations have a maximum near the loop apex. The corresponding field-aligned flows have a node near the apex. We suggest that the quasi-periodic pulsations with periods in the range 10-300 s, frequently observed in flaring coronal loops…
The luminosity distance vs. redshift law is now measured using supernovae and gamma ray bursts, and the angular size distance is measured at the surface of last scattering by the CMB and at z = 0.35 by baryon acoustic oscillations. In this paper this data is fit to models for the equation of state with w = -1, w = const, and w(z) = w_0+w_a(1-a). The last model is poorly constrained by the distance data, leading to unphysical solutions where the dark energy dominates at early times unless the large scale structure and acoustic scale constraints are modified to allow for early time dark energy e…
Although there is mounting observational evidence that the expansion of our universe is undergoing a late-time acceleration, the mechanism for this acceleration is yet unknown. In the so-called Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model this phenomena is attributed to gravitational leakage into extra dimensions. In this work, we mainly focus our attention to the constraints on the model from the gold sample of type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), the first year data from the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). At 99.73% co…
The discovery that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating is the most challenging problem of modern cosmology. In the context of general relativity, there are many dark energy candidates to explain the observed acceleration. In this work we focus our attention on two kinds of simplified Chaplygin gas cosmological accelerating models recently proposed in the literature. In the first scenario, the simplified Chaplygin gas works like a Quintessence model while in the second one, it plays the role of a Quartessence (an unification of the dark sector). Firstly, in order to limit the free par…
We reexamine the two-point correlation of density maxima in Gaussian initial conditions. Spatial derivatives of the linear density correlation, which were ignored in the calculation of Bardeen, Bond, Kaiser & Szalay (1986), are included in our analysis. These functions exhibit large oscillations around the sound horizon scale for generic CDM power spectra. We derive the exact leading-order expression for the correlation of density peaks and demonstrate the contribution of those spatial derivatives. In particular, we show that these functions can modify significantly the baryon acoustic signatu…
The correlation function of the distribution of matter in the universe shows, at large scales, baryon acoustic oscillations, which were imprinted prior to recombination. This feature was first detected in the correlation function of the luminous red galaxies (LRG) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The final release (DR7) of the SDSS has been recently made available, and the useful volume is about two times bigger than in the old sample. We present here, for the first time, the redshift space correlation function of this sample at large scales together with that for one shallower, but den…
We measure the cosmological matter density by observing the positions of baryon acoustic oscillations in the clustering of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We jointly analyse the main galaxies and LRGs in the SDSS DR5 sample, using over half a million galaxies in total. The oscillations are detected with 99.74% confidence (3.0sigma assuming Gaussianity) compared to a smooth power spectrum. When combined with the observed scale of the peaks within the CMB, we find a best-fit value of Omega_m=0.256+0.029-0.024 (68% confidence interval), for a flat Lambda cosmology when marginalis…
The excitation mechanism of low degree acoustic modes is investigated through the analysis of the stochastic time variations of their energy. The correlation between the energies of two different modes is interpreted as the signature of the occurrence rate of their excitation source. The different correlations determined by Foglizzo et al. (1998) constrain the physical properties of an hypothetical source of excitation, which would act in addition to the classical excitation by the turbulent convection. Particular attention is drawn to the effect of coronal mass ejections. The variability of t…
A new age-redshift test is proposed in order to constrain $H_0$ with basis on the existence of old high redshift galaxies (OHRG). As should be expected, the estimates of $H_0$ based on the OHRG are heavily dependent on the cosmological description. In the flat concordance model ($Λ$CDM), for example, the value of $H_0$ depends on the mass density parameter $Ω_M=1 - Ω_Λ$. Such a degeneracy can be broken trough a joint analysis involving the OHRG and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signature. In the framework of the $ΛCDM$ model our joint analysis yields a value of $H_0=71^{+4}_{-4}\kms$ Mpc$^…
The Hubble constant, $H_0$, sets the scale of the size and age of the Universe and its determination from independent methods is still worthwhile to be investigated. In this article, by using the Sunyaev-Zel`dovich effect and X-ray surface brightness data from 38 galaxy clusters observed by Bonamente {\it{et al.}} (2006), we obtain a new estimate of $H_0$ in the context of a flat $Λ$CDM model. There is a degeneracy on the mass density parameter ($Ω_{m}$) which is broken by applying a joint analysis involving the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) as given by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Th…
We present cosmological constraints arising from the first measurement of the radial (line-of-sight) baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) scale in the large scale structure traced by the galaxy distribution. Here we use these radial BAO measurements at z = 0.24 and z = 0.43 to derive new constraints on dark energy and its equation of state for a flat universe, without any other assumptions on the cosmological model: w = -1.14 +/- 0.39 (assumed constant), Omega_m = 0.24+0.06-0.05. If we drop the assumption of flatness and include previous cosmic microwave background and supernova measurements, we…
