We use baryon acoustic peak measurements by Eisenstein et al. (2005) and Percival et al. (2007a) and galaxy cluster gas mass fraction measurements of Allen et al. (2008) to constrain parameters of three different dark energy models. For time-independent dark energy, the Percival et al. (2007a) constraints, which make use of the WMAP measurement of the apparent acoustic horizon angle, most effectively constrain a cosmological parameter close to spatial curvature and favor a close to spatially flat model. In a spatially-flat model the Percival et al. (2007a) data less effectively constrain time-varying dark energy. The joint baryon acoustic peak and galaxy cluster gas mass constraints are consistent with but tighter than those derived from other data. A time-independent cosmological constant in a spatially-flat model provides a good fit to the joint data, but slowly-evolving dark energy can not yet be ruled out.
We compute the impact of dark energy at last scattering on measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). We show that an early dark energy component can contribute a systematic uncertainty to BAO measurements of up to 2.5%. Whilst this effect turns out to only slightly affect current BAO surveys, the results of future BAO surveys might become biased. We find that BAO surveys alone appear unable to resolve this systematic uncertainty, so supplementary measurements are necessary.
We use the radial baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements of Gaztanaga et al. (2008) to constrain parameters of dark energy models. These constraints are comparable with constraints from other "non-radial" BAO data. The radial BAO data are consistent with the time-independent cosmological constant model but do not rule out time-varying dark energy. When we combine radial BAO and the Kowalski et al. (2008) Union type Ia supernova data we get very tight constraints on dark energy.
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) have recently been observed in the distribution of distant galaxies. The height and location of the BAO peak are strong discriminators of cosmological parameters. Here we consider the ways in which weak gravitational lensing distorts the BAO signal. We find two effects that can affect the height of the BAO peak in the correlation function at the percent level but that do not significantly impact the position of the peak and the measurement of the sound horizon. BAO turn out to be robust cosmological standard rulers.
The baryon acoustic oscillations are a promising route to the precision measure of the cosmological distance scale and hence the measurement of the time evolution of dark energy. We show that the non-linear degradation of the acoustic signature in the correlations of low-redshift galaxies is a correctable process. By suitable reconstruction of the linear density field, one can sharpen the acoustic peak in the correlation function or, equivalently, restore the higher harmonics of the oscillations in the power spectrum. With this, one can achieve better measurements of the acoustic scale for a g…
Baryonic acoustic oscillations imprinted in the galaxy power spectrum provide a promising tool for probing the cosmological distance scale and dark energy. We present results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations aimed at investigating possible systematic errors in the recovery of cosmological distances. We show the robustness of baryonic peaks against nonlinearity, redshift distortions, and mild biases within the linear and quasilinear region at various redshifts. While mildly biased tracers follow the matter power spectrum well, redshift distortions do partially obscure baryonic fe…
The baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) prior to recombination should be imprinted onto the 21cm emission background from the epoch of reionization through the underlying density perturbations. Using an analytical approach for both matter power spectrum (CDM+baryons) and reionization process, we demonstrate the BAO induced signatures on the power spectrum of 21cm emission fluctuations. Future low-frequency radio telescopes such as LOFAR and MWA should be able to detect these weak BAO wiggles with an integration time of $\sim1$ year. A combination of the BAO measurements at different redshifts $…
The expansion of the universe appears to be accelerating, and the mysterious anti-gravity agent of this acceleration has been called ``dark energy''. To measure the dynamics of dark energy, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) can be used. Previous discussions of the BAO dark energy test have focused on direct measurements of redshifts of as many as $10^9$ individual galaxies, by observing the 21cm line or by detecting optical emission. Here we show how the study of acoustic oscillation in the 21 cm brightness can be accomplished by economical three dimensional intensity mapping. If our estimate…
We investigate the damping of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signature in the matter power spectrum due to the quasi-nonlinear clustering of density perturbations. On the basis of the third order perturbation theory, we construct a fitting formula of the damping in an analytic way. This demonstrates that the damping is closely related with the growth factor and the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. Then, we investigate the feasibility of constraining the growth factor through a measurement of the damping of the BAO signature. An extension of our formula including higher order cor…
The phases as well as the amplitudes of baryonic acoustic oscillations can be extracted out of a galaxy power spectrum and used as a standard ruler in a cosmological test. A non-oscillating phenomenological fitting function is used to extract the oscillatory part of the galaxy power spectrum and to disentangle phase information from amplitude information. The method (FITEX) is tested with simulated data of the Hubble Volume Simulation to include redshift space effects, non-linear structure growth and biasing. A cosmological test is introduced, which compares the extracted oscillations against …
We employ an analytical approach to investigate the signatures of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) on the convergence power spectrum of weak lensing by large scale structure. It is shown that the BAOs wiggles can be found in both of the linear and nonlinear convergence power spectra of weak lensing at about $40\le l\le600$, but they are weaker than that of matter power spectrum. Although the statistical error for LSST are greatly smaller than that of CFHT and SNAP survey especially at about $30<l<300$, they are still larger than the their maximum variations of BAOs wiggles. Thus, the detect…
An acoustic oscillation of the primeval photon-baryon fluid around the decoupling time imprints a characteristic scale in the galaxy distribution today, known as the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale. Several on-going and/or future galaxy surveys aim at detecting and precisely determining the BAO scale so as to trace the expansion history of the universe. We consider nonlinear and redshift-space distortion effects on the shifts of the BAO scale in $k$-space using perturbation theory. The resulting shifts are indeed sensitive to different choices of the definition of the BAO scale, which …
We present the cosmological distance errors achievable using the baryon acoustic oscillations as a standard ruler. We begin from a Fisher matrix formalism that is upgraded from Seo & Eisenstein (2003). We isolate the information from the baryonic peaks by excluding distance information from other less robust sources. Meanwhile we accommodate the Lagrangian displacement distribution into the Fisher matrix calculation to reflect the gradual loss of information in scale and in time due to nonlinear growth, nonlinear bias, and nonlinear redshift distortions. We then show that we can contract the m…
Since type Ia Supernovae (SNe) explode in galaxies, they can, in principle, be used as the same tracer of the large-scale structure as their hosts to measure baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs). To realize this, one must obtain a dense integrated sampling of SNe over a large fraction of the sky, which may only be achievable photometrically with future projects such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. The advantage of SN BAOs is that SNe have more uniform luminosities and more accurate photometric redshifts than galaxies, but the disadvantage is that they are transitory and hard to obtain i…
Recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation by the Boomerang experiment indicate that the universe is spatially flat. Here some simple back-of-the-envelope calculations are used to explain their result. The main result is a simple formula for the angular scale of the acoustic peak in terms of the standard cosmological parameters: l=193*[1+3(1-Omega_0)/5+(1-h)/5+Omega_Lambda/35].
CMB angular spectrum measurements suggest a flat universe. This paper clarifies the relation between geometry and the spherical harmonic index of the first acoustic peak ($\ell_{peak}$). Numerical and analytic calculations show that $\ell_{peak}$ is approximately a function of $Ω_K/Ω_M$ where $Ω_K$ and $Ω_M$ are the curvature ($Ω_K > 0$ implies an open geometry) and mass density today in units of critical density. Assuming $Ω_K/Ω_M \ll 1$, one obtains a simple formula for $\ell_{peak}$, the derivation of which gives another perspective on the widely-recognized $Ω_M$-$Ω_Λ$ degeneracy in flat mo…
We explore the complementarity between two tomographic probes of the universe: baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) and weak lensing (WL). We find that photometric measurements of BAOs alone do not provide very tight constraints on the dark energy equation of state parameters, partially due to our uncertain knowledge of the galaxy bias. WL, on the other hand, is adversely impacted by the uncertainties of the probability distribution of photometric redshift (photo-z) errors. A joint analysis of the two, however, is more robust to these uncertainties and leads to a remarkable improvement over the…
A semi-analytic approach to the computation of the non-linear power-spectrum of dark matter density fluctuations is proposed. The method is based on the Renormalization Group technique and can be applied to any underlying cosmological model. Our prediction on the baryonic acoustic oscillations in a LambdaCDM model accurately fits the results of N-body simulations down to zero redshift, where perturbation theory fails.
We give a brief review of the physics of acoustic oscillations in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. As an example of the impact of their detection in cosmology, we show how the present data on CMB angular power spectrum on sub-degree scales can be used to constrain dark energy cosmological models.
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs) or baryon wiggles which are present in the galaxy power spectrum at scales 100-150Mpc/h are powerful features with which to constrain cosmology. The potential of these probes is such that these are now included as primary science goals in the planning of several future galaxy surveys. However, there is not a uniquely defined BAO Method in the literature but a range of implementations. We study the assumptions and cosmological performances of three different BAO methods: the full Fourier space power spectrum [P(k)], the `wiggles only' in Fourier space and…
Baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) is a powerful probe on the expansion of the universe, shedding light on elusive dark energy and gravity at cosmological scales. BAO measurements through biased tracers of the underlying matter density field, as most proposals do, can reach high statistical accuracy. However, possible scale dependence in bias may induce non-negligible systematical errors, especially for the most ambitious spectroscopic surveys proposed. We show that precision spectroscopic redshift information available in these surveys allows for {\it self calibration} of the galaxy bias and i…
Although there is mounting observational evidence that the expansion of our universe is undergoing a late-time acceleration, the mechanism for this acceleration is yet unknown. In the so-called Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model this phenomena is attributed to gravitational leakage into extra dimensions. In this work, we mainly focus our attention to the constraints on the model from the gold sample of type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), the first year data from the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). At 99.73% co…
The discovery that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating is the most challenging problem of modern cosmology. In the context of general relativity, there are many dark energy candidates to explain the observed acceleration. In this work we focus our attention on two kinds of simplified Chaplygin gas cosmological accelerating models recently proposed in the literature. In the first scenario, the simplified Chaplygin gas works like a Quintessence model while in the second one, it plays the role of a Quartessence (an unification of the dark sector). Firstly, in order to limit the free par…
We reexamine the two-point correlation of density maxima in Gaussian initial conditions. Spatial derivatives of the linear density correlation, which were ignored in the calculation of Bardeen, Bond, Kaiser & Szalay (1986), are included in our analysis. These functions exhibit large oscillations around the sound horizon scale for generic CDM power spectra. We derive the exact leading-order expression for the correlation of density peaks and demonstrate the contribution of those spatial derivatives. In particular, we show that these functions can modify significantly the baryon acoustic signatu…
The correlation function of the distribution of matter in the universe shows, at large scales, baryon acoustic oscillations, which were imprinted prior to recombination. This feature was first detected in the correlation function of the luminous red galaxies (LRG) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The final release (DR7) of the SDSS has been recently made available, and the useful volume is about two times bigger than in the old sample. We present here, for the first time, the redshift space correlation function of this sample at large scales together with that for one shallower, but den…
We study the nonlinear evolution of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the dark matter power spectrum and correlation function using renormalized perturbation theory (RPT). In a previous paper we showed that RPT successfully predicts the damping of acoustic oscillations; here we extend our calculation to the enhancement of power due to mode-coupling. We show that mode-coupling generates additional oscillations that are out of phase with those in the linear spectrum, leading to shifts in the scales of oscillation nodes defined with respect to a smooth spectrum. When Fourier transformed, …
We show that the measurement of the baryonic acoustic oscillations in large high redshift galaxy surveys offers a precision route to the measurement of dark energy. The cosmic microwave background provides the scale of the oscillations as a standard ruler that can be measured in the clustering of galaxies, thereby yielding the Hubble parameter and angular diameter distance as a function of redshift. This, in turn, enables one to probe dark energy. We use a Fisher matrix formalism to study the statistical errors for redshift surveys up to z=3 and report errors on cosmography while marginalizing…
We use a series of cosmological N-body simulations and various analytic models to study the evolution of the matter power spectrum in real space in a ΛCold Dark Matter universe. We compare the results of N-body simulations against three analytical model predictions; standard perturbation theory, renormalized perturbation theory, and the closure approximation. We include the effects from finite simulation box size in the comparison. We determine the values of the maximum wavenumbers, k^{lim}_{1%} and k^{lim}_{3%}, below which the analytic models and the simulation results agree to within 1 and …
The Large Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) is a dedicated spectroscopic survey telescope being built in China, with an effective aperture of 4 meters and equiped with 4000 fibers. Using the LAMOST telescope, one could make redshift survey of the large scale structure (LSS). The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) features in the LSS power spectrum provide standard rulers for measuring dark energy and other cosmological parameters. In this paper we investigate the meaurement precision achievable for a few possible surveys: (1) a magnitude limited survey of all galaxies, (2) a su…
Through analytic techniques verified by numerical calculations, we establish general relations between the matter and cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectra and their dependence on cosmological parameters on small scales. Fluctuations in the CMB, baryons, cold dark matter (CDM), and neutrinos receive a boost at horizon crossing. Baryon drag on the photons causes alternating acoustic peak heights in the CMB and is uncovered in its bare form under the photon diffusion scale. Decoupling of the photons at last scattering and of the baryons at the end of the Compton drag epoch, freezes the…
We calculate the non-linear galaxy power spectrum in real space, including non-linear distortion of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, using the standard 3rd-order perturbation theory (PT). The calculation is based upon the assumption that the number density of galaxies is a local function of the underlying, non-linear density field. The galaxy bias is allowed to be both non-linear and stochastic. We show that the PT calculation agrees with the galaxy power spectrum estimated from the Millennium Simulation, in the weakly non-linear regime (defined by the matter power spectrum) at high redshifts…
It has recently been suggested that the power spectrum of redshifted 21cm fluctuations could be used to measure the scale of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) during the reionisation era. The resulting measurements are potentially as precise as those offered by the next generation of galaxy redshift surveys at lower redshift. However unlike galaxy redshift surveys, which in the linear regime are subject to a scale independent galaxy bias, the growth of ionised regions during reionisation is thought to introduce a strongly scale dependent relationship between the 21cm and mass power spectra…
The spacing of the acoustic peaks in the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropy multipole spectrum has been claimed to provide the value of the total cosmological density overtly, ``written on the sky.'' Through a semianalytic analysis of the cosmological evolution of the sound horizon and the physics of decoupling we address the robustness of the relation between the peak spacing and the cosmological density. In fact, the asymptotic distance and horizon scalings often used are not good approximations, and the individual densities and equations of state of different components do ent…
We critically examine how well the evolution of large-scale density perturbations is followed in cosmological $N$-body simulations. We first run a large volume simulation and perform a mode-by-mode analysis in three-dimensional Fourier space. We show that the growth of large-scale fluctuations significantly deviates from linear theory predictions. The deviations are caused by {\it nonlinear} coupling with a small number of modes at largest scales owing to finiteness of the simulation volume. We then develop an analytic model based on second-order perturbation theory to quantify the effect. Our…
A new age-redshift test is proposed in order to constrain $H_0$ with basis on the existence of old high redshift galaxies (OHRG). As should be expected, the estimates of $H_0$ based on the OHRG are heavily dependent on the cosmological description. In the flat concordance model ($Λ$CDM), for example, the value of $H_0$ depends on the mass density parameter $Ω_M=1 - Ω_Λ$. Such a degeneracy can be broken trough a joint analysis involving the OHRG and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signature. In the framework of the $ΛCDM$ model our joint analysis yields a value of $H_0=71^{+4}_{-4}\kms$ Mpc$^…
The Hubble constant, $H_0$, sets the scale of the size and age of the Universe and its determination from independent methods is still worthwhile to be investigated. In this article, by using the Sunyaev-Zel`dovich effect and X-ray surface brightness data from 38 galaxy clusters observed by Bonamente {\it{et al.}} (2006), we obtain a new estimate of $H_0$ in the context of a flat $Λ$CDM model. There is a degeneracy on the mass density parameter ($Ω_{m}$) which is broken by applying a joint analysis involving the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) as given by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Th…
We present cosmological constraints arising from the first measurement of the radial (line-of-sight) baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) scale in the large scale structure traced by the galaxy distribution. Here we use these radial BAO measurements at z = 0.24 and z = 0.43 to derive new constraints on dark energy and its equation of state for a flat universe, without any other assumptions on the cosmological model: w = -1.14 +/- 0.39 (assumed constant), Omega_m = 0.24+0.06-0.05. If we drop the assumption of flatness and include previous cosmic microwave background and supernova measurements, we…
Scalar mediated interactions among baryons extend well above the Compton wavelength, when they are embedded in a Bose-Einstein condensate composed of the mediating particles. Indeed, this non-trivial environment results in an infinite-ranged interaction. We show that if the Dark Matter of the Universe is composed of such a condensate, the imprints of an interaction between baryonic and Dark Matter could be manifest as anomalies in the peak structure of the Cosmic Microwave Background.
We have studied bounds on the neutrino mass using new data from the WMAP 3 year data, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of the baryon acoustic peak, the Type Ia supernovae from SNLS, and the Lyman-alpha forest. We find that even in the most general models with a running spectral index where the number of neutrinos and the dark energy equation of state are allowed to vary, the 95% C.L. bound on the sum of neutrino masses is sum m_nu < 0.62 eV (95% C.L.), a bound which we believe to be robust. In the more often used constrained analysis with N_nu =3, w = -1, and alpha_s = 0, we find a bou…
