We consider the free boundary condition Gibbs measure of the Potts model on a random tree. We provide an explicit temperature interval below the ferromagnetic transition temperature for which this measure is extremal, improving older bounds of Mossel and Peres. In information theoretic language extremality of the Gibbs measure corresponds to non-reconstructability for symmetric q-ary channels. The bounds are optimal for the Ising model and appear to be close to what we conjecture to be the true values up to a factor of 0.0150 in the case q = 3 and 0.0365 for q = 4. Our proof uses an iteration of random boundary entropies from the outside of the tree to the inside, along with a symmetrization argument.
We study Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model in the mean field case (i.e on a complete graph) and on trees. For the mean field case, a complete characterization of the set of temperatures for which non-Gibbsianness happens is given. The results for trees are somewhat less explicit, but we do show for general trees that non-Gibbsianness of the fuzzy Potts model happens exactly for those temperatures where the underlying Potts model has multiple Gibbs measures.
In this paper we give a systematic review of the theory of Gibbs measures of Potts model on Cayley trees (developed since 2013) and discuss many applications of the Potts model to real world situations: mainly biology, physics, and some examples of alloy behavior, cell sorting, financial engineering, flocking birds, flowing foams, image segmentation, medicine, sociology etc.
In this paper, we consider the Potts-SOS model where the spin takes values in the set $\{0, 1, 2\}$ on the Cayley tree of order two. We describe all the translation-invariant splitting Gibbs measures for this model in some conditions. Moreover, we investigate whether these Gibbs measures are extremal or non-extremal in the set of all Gibbs measures.
The reconstruction problem on the tree has been studied in numerous contexts including statistical physics, information theory and computational biology. However, rigorous reconstruction thresholds have only been established in a small number of models. We prove the first exact reconstruction threshold in a non-binary model establishing the Kesten-Stigum bound for the 3-state Potts model on regular trees of large degree. We further establish that the Kesten-Stigum bound is not tight for the $q$-state Potts model when $q \geq 5$. Moreover, we determine asymptotics for the reconstruction thresho…
We present a proof of the power law decay of magnetic moment for the $q$-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the regular tree at the critical temperature, and also justify that the exact exponent is $\frac{1}{2}$. Our proof relies on the assumption of the uniqueness at the critical temperature, which has been established for $q=3,4$, and for $q \ge 5$ with large degree. An iterative contraction inequality is developed for independent interests.
We show that the $4$-state anti-ferromagnetic Potts model with interaction parameter $w\in(0,1)$ on the infinite $(d+1)$-regular tree has a unique Gibbs measure if $w\geq 1-\frac{4}{d+1}$ for all $d\geq 4$. This is tight since it is known that there are multiple Gibbs measures when $0\leq w<1-\frac{4}{d+1}$ and $d\geq 4$. We moreover give a new proof of the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure for the $3$-state Potts model on the $(d+1)$-regular tree for $w\geq 1-\frac{3}{d+1}$ when $d\geq 3$ and for $w\in (0,1)$ when $d=2$.
The paper concerns the $q$-state Potts model (i.e., with spin values in $\{1,\dots,q\}$) on a Cayley tree $\mathbb{T}^k$ of degree $k\geq 2$ (i.e., with $k+1$ edges emanating from each vertex) in an external (possibly random) field. We construct the so-called splitting Gibbs measures (SGM) using generalized boundary conditions on a sequence of expanding balls, subject to a suitable compatibility criterion. Hence, the problem of existence/uniqueness of SGM is reduced to solvability of the corresponding functional equation on the tree. In particular, we introduce the notion of translation-invari…
We prove an inequality on decision trees on monotonic measures which generalizes the OSSS inequality on product spaces. As an application, we use this inequality to prove a number of new results on lattice spin models and their random-cluster representations. More precisely, we prove that 1. For the Potts model on transitive graphs, correlations decay exponentially fast for $β<β_c$. 2. For the random-cluster model with cluster weight $q\geq1$ on transitive graphs, correlations decay exponentially fast in the subcritical regime and the cluster-density satisfies the mean-field lower bound in the…
In the present paper, we study a phase transition problem for the $q$-state $p$-adic Potts model over the Cayley tree of order three. We consider a more general notion of $p$-adic Gibbs measure which depends on parameter $ρ\in\bq_p$. Such a measure is called {\it generalized $p$-adic quasi Gibbs measure}. When $ρ$ equals to $p$-adic exponent, then it coincides with the $p$-adic Gibbs measure. When $ρ=p$, then it coincides with $p$-adic quasi Gibbs measure. Therefore, we investigate two regimes with respect to the value of $|ρ|_p$. Namely, in the first regime, one takes $ρ=\exp_p(J)$ for some $…
The antiferromagnetic $q$-state Potts model is perhaps the most canonical model for which the uniqueness threshold on the tree is not yet understood, largely because of the absence of monotonicities. Jonasson established the uniqueness threshold in the zero-temperature case, which corresponds to the $q$-colourings model. In the permissive case (where the temperature is positive), the Potts model has an extra parameter $β\in(0,1)$, which makes the task of analysing the uniqueness threshold even harder and much less is known. In this paper, we focus on the case $q=3$ and give a detailed analysis…
Recent results establish for 2-spin antiferromagnetic systems that the computational complexity of approximating the partition function on graphs of maximum degree D undergoes a phase transition that coincides with the uniqueness phase transition on the infinite D-regular tree. For the ferromagnetic Potts model we investigate whether analogous hardness results hold. Goldberg and Jerrum showed that approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Potts model is at least as hard as approximating the number of independent sets in bipartite graphs (#BIS-hardness). We improve this hardness…

We provide an explicit formula for the limiting free energy density (log-partition function divided by the number of vertices) for ferromagnetic Potts models on uniformly sparse graph sequences converging locally to the d-regular tree for d even, covering all temperature regimes. This formula coincides with the Bethe free energy functional evaluated at a suitable fixed point of the belief propagation recursion on the d-regular tree, the so-called replica symmetric solution. For uniformly random d-regular graphs we further show that the replica symmetric Bethe formula is an upper bound for the …
We consider the problem of sampling from the Potts model on random regular graphs. It is conjectured that sampling is possible when the temperature of the model is in the uniqueness regime of the regular tree, but positive algorithmic results have been for the most part elusive. In this paper, for all integers $q\geq 3$ and $Δ\geq 3$, we develop algorithms that produce samples within error $o(1)$ from the $q$-state Potts model on random $Δ$-regular graphs, whenever the temperature is in uniqueness, for both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases. The algorithm for the antiferromagnetic …
We consider the problem of sampling from the ferromagnetic Potts and random-cluster models on a general family of random graphs via the Glauber dynamics for the random-cluster model. The random-cluster model is parametrized by an edge probability $p \in (0,1)$ and a cluster weight $q > 0$. We establish that for every $q\ge 1$, the random-cluster Glauber dynamics mixes in optimal $Θ(n\log n)$ steps on $n$-vertex random graphs having a prescribed degree sequence with bounded average branching $γ$ throughout the full high-temperature uniqueness regime $p<p_u(q,γ)$. The family of random graph mode…
We study several statistical mechanical models on a general tree. Particular attention is devoted to the classical Heisenberg models, where the state space is the d-dimensional unit sphere and the interactions are proportional to the cosines of the angles between neighboring spins. The phenomenon of interest here is the classification of phase transition (non-uniqueness of the Gibbs state) according to whether it is robust. In many cases, including all of the Heisenberg and Potts models, occurrence of robust phase transition is determined by the geometry (branching number) of the tree in a way…
Consider the semigroup of random walk on a complete graph, which we call the Potts semigroup. Diaconis and Saloff-Coste computed the maximum of the ratio of the relative entropy and the Dirichlet form obtaining the constant $α_2$ in the $2$-log-Sobolev inequality ($2$-LSI). In this paper, we obtain the best possible non-linear inequality relating entropy and the Dirichlet form (i.e., $p$-NLSI, $p\ge1$). As an example, we show $α_1 = 1+\frac{1+o(1)}{\log k}$. By integrating the $1$-NLSI we obtain the new strong data processing inequality (SDPI), which in turn allows us to improve results of Mos…
Pemantle and Steif provided a sharp threshold for the existence of a RPT (robust phase transition) for the continuous rotator model and the Potts model in terms of the branching number and the second eigenvalue of the transfer operator, where a robust phase transition is said to occur if an arbitrarily weak coupling with symmetry-breaking boundary conditions suffices to induce symmetry breaking in the bulk. They further showed that for the Potts model RPT occurs at a different threshold than PT (phase transition in the sense of multiple Gibbs measures), and conjectured that RPT and PT should o…
The Swendsen-Wang algorithm is a sophisticated, widely-used Markov chain for sampling from the Gibbs distribution for the ferromagnetic Ising and Potts models. This chain has proved difficult to analyze, due in part to the global nature of its updates. We present optimal bounds on the convergence rate of the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the complete $d$-ary tree. Our bounds extend to the non-uniqueness region and apply to all boundary conditions. We show that the spatial mixing conditions known as Variance Mixing and Entropy Mixing, introduced in the study of local Markov chains by Martinelli e…
We discuss various aspects concerning stochastic domination for the Ising model and the fuzzy Potts model. We begin by considering the Ising model on the homogeneous tree of degree $d$, $\Td$. For given interaction parameters $J_1$, $J_2>0$ and external field $h_1\in\RR$, we compute the smallest external field $\tilde{h}$ such that the plus measure with parameters $J_2$ and $h$ dominates the plus measure with parameters $J_1$ and $h_1$ for all $h\geq\tilde{h}$. Moreover, we discuss continuity of $\tilde{h}$ with respect to the three parameters $J_1$, $J_2$, $h$ and also how the plus measures a…
We give the first comprehensive analysis of the effect of boundary conditions on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics in the so-called Bethe approximation. Specifically, we show that spectral gap and the log-Sobolev constant of the Glauber dynamics for the Ising model on an n-vertex regular tree with plus-boundary are bounded below by a constant independent of n at all temperatures and all external fields. This implies that the mixing time is O(log n) (in contrast to the free boundary case, where it is not bounded by any fixed polynomial at low temperatures). In addition, our methods yield …
It is known that the Kesten-Stigum reconstruction bound is tight for roughly symmetric binary channels. In this paper, we will adopt a refined analysis of moment recursion on a weighted version of the magnetization, which is engaged in Sly [2011] to handle the symmetric Potts model, and establish the critical condition of the asymmetric Ising model to make Kesten-Stigum bound the reconstruction threshold on regular $d$-ary trees.
We give a criterion of the form Q(d)c(M)<1 for the non-reconstructability of tree-indexed q-state Markov chains obtained by broadcasting a signal from the root with a given transition matrix M. Here c(M) is an explicit function, which is convex over the set of M's with a given invariant distribution, that is defined in terms of a (q-1)-dimensional variational problem over symmetric entropies. Further Q(d) is the expected number of offspring on the Galton-Watson tree. This result is equivalent to proving the extremality of the free boundary condition-Gibbs measure within the corresponding Gibbs…
We study the performance of Markov chains for the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on random regular graphs. It is conjectured that their performance is dictated by metastability phenomena, i.e., the presence of "phases" (clusters) in the sample space where Markov chains with local update rules, such as the Glauber dynamics, are bound to take exponential time to escape. The phases that are believed to drive these metastability phenomena in the case of the Potts model emerge as local, rather than global, maxima of the so-called Bethe functional, and previous approaches of analysing these pha…
We study continuous time Glauber dynamics for random configurations with local constraints (e.g. proper coloring, Ising and Potts models) on finite graphs with $n$ vertices and of bounded degree. We show that the relaxation time (defined as the reciprocal of the spectral gap $|λ_1-λ_2|$) for the dynamics on trees and on planar hyperbolic graphs, is polynomial in $n$. For these hyperbolic graphs, this yields a general polynomial sampling algorithm for random configurations. We then show that if the relaxation time $τ_2$ satisfies $τ_2=O(1)$, then the correlation coefficient, and the mutual info…
We establish rapid mixing of the random-cluster Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs for all $q\ge 1$ and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, where the threshold $p_u(q,Δ)$ corresponds to a uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition for the random-cluster model on the (infinite) $Δ$-regular tree. It is expected that this threshold is sharp, and for $q>2$ the Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs undergoes an exponential slowdown at $p_u(q,Δ)$. More precisely, we show that for every $q\ge 1$, $Δ\ge 3$, and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, with probability $1-o(1)$ over the choice of a random $Δ$-regular graph on $n$ v…
We study Gibbsian models of unbounded integer-valued spins on trees which possess a symmetry under height-shift. We develop a theory relating boundary laws to gradient Gibbs measures, which applies also in cases where the corresponding Gibbs measures do not exist. Our results extend the classical theory of Zachary beyond the case of normalizable boundary laws, which implies existence of Gibbs measures, to periodic boundary laws. We provide a construction for classes of tree-automorphism invariant gradient Gibbs measures in terms of mixtures of pinned measures, whose marginals to infinite paths…
We consider $\mathbb Z$-valued $p$-SOS-models with nearest neighbor interactions of the form $|ω_v-ω_w|^p$, and finite-spin ferromagnetic models on regular trees. This includes the classical SOS-model, the discrete Gaussian model and the Potts model. We exhibit a family of extremal inhomogeneous (i.e. tree automorphism non-invariant) Gibbs measures arising as low temperature perturbations of ground states (local energy minimizers), which have a sparse enough set of broken bonds together with uniformly bounded increments along them. These low temperature states in general do not possess any sym…
