I will review heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory for the nucleon delta degrees of freedom and then examine the recent dynamical lattice calculations of the nucleon mass from the BMW, ETM, JLQCD, LHP, MILC, NPLQCD, PACS-CS, QCDSF/UKQCD and RBC/UKQCD Collaborations. Performing the chiral extrapolations of these results, one finds remarkable agreement with the physical nucleon mass, from each lattice data set. However, a careful examination of the lattice data and the resulting extrapolation functions reveals some unexpected results, serving to highlight the significant challenges in performing chiral extrapolations of baryon quantities. All the N_f=2+1 dynamical results can be quantitatively described by theoretically unmotivated fit function linear in the pion mass with m_pi ~ 750 -190 MeV. When extrapolated to the physical point, the results are in striking agreement with the physical nucleon mass. I will argue that knowledge of each lattice datum of the nucleon mass is required at the 1-2% level, including all systematics, in order to conclusively determine if this is a bizarre conspiracy of lattice artifacts or rather a mysterious phenomenon of QCD.
I discuss the latest progress in calculating baryon-baryon interactions with lattice QCD. The latest results from the NPLQCD collaboration for nucleon-nucleon scattering along with preliminary calculations of hyperon-nucleon scattering are presented.
We discuss the status of current dynamical lattice QCD simulations in connection to the emerging results on the strange and charmed baryon spectrum, excited states of the nucleon and the investigation of the structure of scalar mesons.
We present an overview of modern approaches to low-energy baryon structure based on baryon chiral perturbation theory. These are driven by the emergence of Lorentz covariant schemes and the systematic consideration of the effects of the lowest-lying decuplet resonances. In order to illustrate the progress recently achieved in this field, we present the last developments on our understanding of the nucleon sigma terms along these lines. In particular, we will show how these methods, in SU(2) or SU(3) settings, are reliable tools to process and maximize the information on the physical structure …
We present results on the nucleon scalar, axial and tensor charges, as well as, on the first moments of the unpolarized, polarized and transversity parton distributions using $N_f=2$ and $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions. These include an ensemble that yields the physical value of the ratio of the nucleon to the pion mass. Results on the axial charges of hyperons and charmed baryons are also presented for a range of pion masses including the physical one.
We provide an introduction to the power-counting issue in baryon chiral perturbation theory and discuss some recent developments in the manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of the one-nucleon sector. As explicit applications we consider the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass, its convergence properties, and calculations of the electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon.
We discuss the question in the title employing manifestly covariant Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and recent high-statistics lattice results published in [1].
The pion-nucleon sigma term ($σ_{πN}$) is an observable of fundamental importance because embodies information about the internal scalar structure of the nucleon. Nowadays this quantity has triggered renewed interest because it is a key input for a reliable estimation of the dark matter-nucleon spin independent elastic scattering cross section. In this proceeding we present how this quantity can be reliably extracted by employing only experimental information with the use covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We also contrast our extraction with updated phenomenology related to $σ_{πN}$…
We calculate the lambda-nucleon scattering phase shifts and mixing angles by applying time-ordered perturbation theory to the manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory. Scattering amplitudes are obtained by solving the corresponding coupled-channel integral equations that have a milder ultraviolet behavior compared to their non-relativistic analogs. This allows us to consider the removed cutoff limit in our leading-order calculations also in the $^3P_0$ and $^3P_1$ partial waves. We find that, in the framework we are using, at least some part of the hi…
The scalar strangeness content of the nucleon, characterized by the so-called strangeness-nucleon sigma term, is of fundamental importance in understanding its sea-quark flavor structure. We report a determination of the octet baryon sigma terms via the Feynman-Hellmann theorem by analyzing the latest high-statistics $n_f=2+1$ lattice QCD simulations with covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. In particular, we predict $σ_{πN}=55(1)(4)$ MeV and $σ_{sN}=27(27)(4)$ MeV, while the first error is statistical and the second systematic due to differe…
The positivity of the integrand of certain Euclidean space functional integrals implies that the free energy per unit volume for QCD with a baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ (and zero isospin chemical potential) is greater than the free energy with isospin chemical potential $μ_I = (2 μ_B)/N_c$ (and zero baryon chemical potential). This relation implies a bound on the nucleon mass: there exists a particle X in QCD such that $M_N \ge (N_c m_X)/(2 I_X)$ where $m_X$ is the mass and of the particle and $I_X$ is its isospin.
We investigate the light-cone wave functions and leading-twist distribution amplitudes for the nucleon and $Δ$ baryon within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. The baryon wave function consists of the valence quark and vacuum wave functions. The vacuum wave functions generate all possible higher Fock states by expanding them. We find that it is essential to consider the five-quark component and relativistic corrections to evaluate the distribution amplitudes of the nucleon and $Δ$ isobar. Having taken into account them, we derive the distribution amplitudes. The results are in go…
We study the scattering of a pseudoscalar meson off one ground state octet baryon in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT) up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. The inherent power counting breaking terms are removed within extended-on-mass-shell scheme. We perform the first combined study of the pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering data in covariant BChPT and show that it can provide a reasonable description of the experimental data. In addition, we find that it is possible to fit the experimental baryon masses and the pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering data simultan…
In recent years the study of two particle systems on the lattice has led to excellent results in the meson sector of the QCD spectrum, however baryon resonances mostly remain unexplored. We present a study of pion-nucleon systems as decay product of baryon resonances in different channels, with special focus on the nucleon spectrum. We evaluate the correlation functions of single and multi particle interpolators. All the Wick contributions are explicitly computed and the consequences of reduced symmetries in moving frames are taken into account. We discuss the theoretical setup together with r…
I discuss the quark mass dependence of various baryon properties derived from chiral perturbation theory. Such representations can eventually be used as chiral extrapolation functions when lattice data at sufficiently small quark masses become available. The quark mass dependence is encoded in loop and contact term contributions, the latter given in terms of low-energy constants. I stress the importance of utilizing phenomenological input to constrain a certain class of low-energy constants and discuss the ensuing theoretical uncertainty for various baryon observables, like the nucleon and the…
We report on new attempt to investigate baryon-baryon interactions in lattice QCD. From the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) wave function, we have successfully extracted the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potentials in quenched QCD simulations, which reproduce qualitative features of modern $NN$ potentials. The method has been extended to obtain the tensor potential as well as the central potential and also applied to the hyperon-nucleon ($YN$) interactions, in both quenched and full QCD.
We compute the Coulomb interaction energy of dense sets of static quarks in a compact volume (much smaller than the lattice volume) containing one quark per lattice site. The quark color charges are combined into either a set of three-quark nucleon states, or into a non-factorizable "one big hadron" state. In both cases we find that the energy per quark is roughly constant as the volume of quarks increases. A surprise is that if we construct the nucleon states from sets of three quarks chosen at random in the volume, then the energy per quark remains roughly constant, even as the average dista…
In this paper, we calculate analytically the baryonic density and susceptibilities, which are sensitive probes to the fermionic degrees of freedom, in a holographic model of QCD both in its hot QGP phase and in its cold dense phase. Interesting patterns due to strong coupling dynamics will be shown and valuable lessons for QCD will be discussed.
We investigate the strong force fields and stabilities of the nucleon and the singly heavy baryon $Σ_c$ within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. Having constructed the pion mean fields in the presence of the $N_c-1$ level quarks self-consistently, we are able to examine the gravitational form factors of $Σ_c$. We mainly focus in the present work on the stability conditions for both the nucleon and $Σ_c$ and discuss the strong force fields and their physical implications. We also present the results for the gravitational form factors and relevant observables, emphasising the diff…
We obtain leading- and next-to-leading order predictions of chiral perturbation theory for several prominent moments of nucleon structure functions. These free-parameter free results turn out to be in overall agreement with the available empirical information on nearly all of the considered moments, in the region of low-momentum transfer ($Q^2 < 0.3$ GeV$^2$). Especially surprising is the situation for the spin polarizability $δ_{LT}$, which thus far was not reproducible in chiral perturbation theory for proton and neutron simultaneously. This problem, known as the "$δ_{LT}$ puzzle," is not se…
A Poincare' covariant Faddeev equation is presented, which enables the simultaneous prediction of meson and baryon observables using the leading-order in a truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations that can systematically be improved. The solution describes a nucleon's dressed-quark core. The evolution of the nucleon mass with current-quark mass is discussed. A nucleon-photon current, which can produce nucleon form factors with realistic Q^2-evolution, is described. Axial-vector diquark correlations lead to a neutron Dirac form factor that is negative, with r_1^{nu}>r_1^{nd}. The proton elec…
We consider the chiral Lagrangian with nucleon, isobar, and pion degrees of freedom. The baryon masses and the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon are derived at the one-loop level. We explore the impact of using on-shell baryon masses in the loop expressions. As compared to results from conventional chiral perturbation theory we find significant differences. An application to QCD lattice data is presented. We perform a global fit to the available lattice data sets for the baryon masses and the nucleon axial-vector form factor, and determine the low-energy constants relevant at N$^3$LO for…

We present the results of the nucleon and $Ω$ baryon masses using staggered action for both valence and sea quarks. Three ensembles with the physical pion mass at approximate lattice spacings of $0.15$, $0.12$, and $0.088$fm are employed to extrapolate the masses to continuum and we obtain $M_N = 964(16)$ MeV and $M_Ω= 1678(9)$. Both statistical and systematic uncertainties are included in the nucleon mass, whereas only the statistical uncertainty is accounted for in the $Ω$ baryon mass.
We calculate the nonperturbative two-pion exchange (TPE) contributions to the $NN$ interaction in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We study how the nonperturbative resummation affects the $NN$ phase shifts for partial waves with $J \geq 3$ and $L \leq 6$. No significant differences are observed between the nonperturbative phase shifts and perturbative ones for most partial waves except for $^3D_3$, for which the nonperturbative resummation greatly improves the description of the phase shifts. However, a significant cutoff dependence is found for this partial wave and a reasonable d…
We study the latest $N_f=2+1+1$ and $N_f=2$ ETMC lattice QCD simulations of the nucleon masses and extract the pion-nucleon sigma term utilizing the Feynman-Hellmann theorem in SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell scheme. We find that the lattice QCD data can be described quite well already at the next-to-next-to-leading order. The overall picture remains essentially the same at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. Our final result is $σ_{πN}=50.2(1.2)(2.0)$ MeV, or equivalently, $f_{u/d}^N=0.0535(13)(21)$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and…
We present recent lattice results on the baryon spectrum, nucleon electromagnetic and axial form factors, nucleon to $Δ$ transition form factors as well as the $Δ$ electromagnetic form factors. The masses of the low lying baryons and the nucleon form factors are calculated using two degenerate flavors of twisted mass fermions down to pion mass of about 270 MeV. We compare to the results of other collaborations. The nucleon to $Δ$ transition and $Δ$ form factors are calculated in a hybrid scheme, which uses staggered sea quarks and domain wall valence quarks. The dominant dipole nucleon to $Δ$ …
Outstanding problems in nuclear physics require input and guidance from lattice QCD calculations of few baryons systems. However, these calculations suffer from an exponentially bad signal-to-noise problem which has prevented a controlled extrapolation to the physical point. The variational method has been applied very successfully to two-meson systems, allowing for the extraction of the two-meson states very early in Euclidean time through the use of improved single hadron operators. The sheer numerical cost of using the same techniques in two-baryon systems has been prohibitive. We present a…
At zero temperature the negative-parity ground states of the nucleon and delta baryons are non-degenerate with the positive-parity partners due to spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. However, chiral symmetry is expected to be restored at sufficiently high temperature, in particular when going from the hadronic to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase. This would imply that channels with opposite parity become degenerate. We study the nucleon (spin $1/2$) and $Δ$ (spin $3/2$) baryons in both parity sectors using lattice QCD. The range of temperatures spans both the hadronic and QGP phases. Us…
We present the lattice QCD studies for baryon-baryon interactions for the first time with (almost) physical quark masses. $N_f = 2+1$ gauge configurations are generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action with stout smearing on the lattice of $(96 a)^4 \simeq (8.2 {\rm fm})^4$ with $a \simeq 0.085$ fm, where $m_π\simeq 146$ MeV and $m_K \simeq 525$ MeV. Baryon forces are calculated from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) correlation functions using the time-dependent HAL QCD method. In this report, we first give the general overview of the theoretica…
In this work we analyse positive- and negative-parity channels for the nucleon (spin $1/2$ octet), $Δ$ and $Ω$ baryons (spin $3/2$ decuplet) using lattice QCD. In Nature, at zero temperature, chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, causing positive- and negative-parity ground states to have different masses. However, chiral symmetry is expected to be restored (for massless quarks) around the crossover temperature, implying that the two opposite parity channels should become degenerate. Here we study what happens in a temperature range which includes both the hadronic and the quark gluon plasm…
Following a recent lattice study of nucleon parity doubling at finite temperature from the computation of the two-point nucleon correlators, we study the spectral functions of free nucleons at finite temperature. Spectral densities in the continuum are presented along with a comparison to (free) results on the lattice. Particular attention is given to lattice artefacts at higher energies.
We present first results for masses of spin-3/2 N and Delta baryons in lattice QCD using Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermions. Spin-3/2 interpolating fields providing overlap with both spin-3/2 and spin-1/2 states are considered. In the isospin-1/2 sector, we observe, after appropriate spin and parity projection, a strong signal for the J^P=3/2^- state together with a weak but discernible signal for the 3/2^+ state with a mass splitting near that observed experimentally. We also find good agreement between the 1/2^+/- masses and earlier nucleon mass simulations with the standard spin-1/2…
