We find out classical particles, starting from Dirac quantum fields on a curved space-time, by an eikonal approximation and a localization hypothesis for amplitudes. We recover the results by Mathisson-Papapetrou, hence establishing a fundamental correspondence between the coupling of classical and quantum spinning particles with the gravitational field.
In this work we calculate some estimations of the gravitomagnetic clock effect, taking into consideration not only the rotating gravitational field of the central mass, but also the spin of the test particle, obtaining values for $Δt=t_{+}-t_{-}=2.5212079035\times10^{-8} \textrm{s}$. We use the formulation of Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for this problem in a Kerr metric. In order to compare our numerical results with previous works, we consider initially only the equatorial plane and also apply the Mathisson-Pirani supplementary spin condition for the spinning test particle.
Comparing effective-one-body and Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon results for a spinning test particle on circular equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole
The analytical and numerical solutions of the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations under the Mathisson-Pirani supplementary condition describing highly relativistic (ultrarelativistic) motions of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild field are investigated. The known condition S/mr<<1, which is necessary for a test particle, holds on all these solutions. The explicit expressions for the non-equatorial circular orbits, in particular for the space boundaries of the region of existence of these orbits, are obtained. The dynamics of the deviation of a spinning particle from the equatorial ultrarelativi…
We investigate the dynamics of the Papapetrou equations in Kerr spacetime. These equations provide a model for the motion of a relativistic spinning test particle orbiting a rotating (Kerr) black hole. We perform a thorough parameter space search for signs of chaotic dynamics by calculating the Lyapunov exponents for a large variety of initial conditions. We find that the Papapetrou equations admit many chaotic solutions, with the strongest chaos occurring in the case of eccentric orbits with pericenters close to the limit of stability against plunge into a maximally spinning Kerr black hole. …
Spinning equations of Finslerian gravity, the counterpart of Mathisson-Papapetrou Spinning equations of motion are obtained. Two approaches of Finslerian geometries are illustrated, and their corresponding spinning equations. The significance of nonlinear connection and its relevance on spinning equations and their deviations ones are examined.
In this paper we report the results of a thorough numerical study of the motion of spinning particles in Kerr spacetime with different prescriptions. We first evaluate the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations with two different spin supplementary conditions, namely, the Tulczyjew and the Newton-Wigner, and make a comparison of these two cases. We then use the Hamiltonian formalism given by Barausse, Racine, and Buonanno in [Phys. Rev. D, 80, 104025 (2009)] to evolve the orbits and compare them with the corresponding orbits provided by the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations. We include a full description…
Different types of essentially nongeodesic motions of highly relativistic spinning particles in Schwarzschild's and Kerr's background which follows from the Mathisson-Papapetrou (MP) equations are considered. It is shown that dependently on the correlation of signs of the spin and the particle's orbital velocity the spin-gravity coupling acts as a significant repulsive or attractive force. Numerical estimates for electrons, protons, and neutrinos in the gravitational field of black holes are presented. The correspondence between the general relativistic Dirac equation and MP equations is discu…
Ultrarelativistic circular orbits of spinning particles in a Schwarzschild field described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are considered. The preliminary estimates of the possible synchrotron electromagnetic radiation of highly relativistic protons and electrons on these orbits in the gravitational field of a black hole are presented
Spinning equations of bi-metric types theories of gravity, the counterpart of the Papapetrou spinning equations of motion have been derived as well as their corresponding spinning deviation equations. Due to introducing different types of bi-metric theories, the influence of different curvatures based upon different affine connections , have been examined. A specific Lagrangian function for each type theory has been proposed, in order to derive the set of spinning motions and their corresponding spinning deviation equations.
A set of world-line deviation equations is derived in the framework of Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon description of pseudo-classical spinning particles. They generalize the geodesic deviation equations. We examine the resulting equations for particles moving in the space-time of a plane gravitational wave.
The dimensional reduction of Papapetrou equations is performed in a 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein background and Dixon-Souriau results for the motion of a charged spinning body are obtained. The splitting provides an electric dipole moment, and, for elementary particles, the induced parity and time-reversal violations are explained.
Introducing the well known Papapetrou field as the gravitoelectromagnetic field tensor, we express the Maxwell-type part of the 3-dimensional quasi-Maxwell form of the {\it vacuum} Einstein field equations in terms of differential forms, analogous to their electromagnetic counterparts in curved spacetimes. Using the same formalism we introduce the junction conditions on non-null hypersurfaces in terms of the introduced gravitoelectromagnetic 4-vector fields and apply them to the case of the Van Stockum interior and exterior solutions.
We present a simple method to derive the semiclassical equations of motion for a spinning particle in a gravitational field. We investigate the cases of classical, rotating particles (pole-dipole particles), as well as particles with intrinsic spin. We show that, starting with a simple Lagrangian, one can derive equations for the spin evolution and momentum propagation in the framework of metric theories of gravity and in theories based on a Riemann-Cartan geometry (Poincare gauge theory), without explicitly referring to matter current densities (spin and energy-momentum). Our results agree wi…
Equations of spinning objects are obtained in Absolute Parallelism Geometry [AP], a special class of non-Riemannian geometry admitting an alternative non-vanishing curvature and torsion simultaneously. This new set of equations is the counterpart of the Papapetrou equations in the Riemannian geometry. Applying, the concept of geometerization of physics, it may give rise to describe the spin tensor as parameterized commutation relation between path and path deviation equations in both Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries.
We outline that, in a Kaluza-Klein framework, not only the electro-magnetic field can be geometrized, but also the dynamics of a charged spinning particle can be inferred from the motion in a 5-dimensional space-time. This result is achieved by the dimensional splitting of Papapetrou equations and by proper identifications of 4-dimensional quantities.
We consider the orbits of particles with spin in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Using the Papapetrou-Dixon equations of motion for spinning particles, we solve for the orbits and focus on those that exhibit chaos using both Poincaré maps and Lyapunov exponents. In particular, we develop a method for comparing the Lyapunov exponents of chaotic orbits. We find chaotic orbits for smaller spin values than previously thought and with spins that could be realized astrophysically.
A new representation, which does not contain the third-order derivatives of the coordinates, of the exact Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations, describing the motion of a spinning test particle, is obtained under the assumption of the Mathisson-Pirani condition in a Kerr background. For this purpose the integrals of energy and angular momentum of the spinning particle as well as a differential relationship following from the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations are used. The form of these equations is adapted for their computer integration with the aim to investigate the influence of the spin-…
Quasi-classical picture of motion of spin 1/2 massive particle in a curved spacetime is built on base of simple Lagrangian model. The one is constructed due to analogy with Lagrangian of massive vector particle. Equations of motion and spin propagation coincide with Papapetrou equations describing dynamic of classical spinning particle in a curved spacetime.
Quasi-classical picture of motion of spin 1/2 massless particle in a curved spacetime is built on base of simple Lagrangian model. The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for a massive spinning test particle in plane gravitational waves are analysed and explicit solutions constructed in terms of solutions of certain linear ordinary differential equations. For harmonic waves this system reduces to a single equation of Mathieu-Hill type. In this case spinning particles may exhibit parametric excitation by gravitational fields. For a spinning test particle scattered by a gravitational wave pulse, the final energy-momentum of the particle may be related to the width, height, polarisation of the wave and spin orientation of t…
We analyze the behavior of a spinning particle in gravity, both from a quantum and a classical point of view. We infer that, since the interaction between the space-time curvature and a spinning test particle is expected, then the main features of such an interaction can get light on which degrees of freedom have physical meaning in a quantum gravity theory with fermions. Finally, the dimensional reduction of Papapetrou equations is performed in a 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein background and Dixon-Souriau results for the motion of a charged spinning body are obtained.
Based on the coupling between the spin of a particle and gravitoelectromagnetic field, the equation of motion of a spinning test particle in gravitational field is deduced. From this equation of motion, it is found that the motion of a spinning particle deviates from the geodesic trajectory, and this deviation originates from the coupling between the spin of the particle and gravitoelectromagnetic field, which is also the origin of Lense-Thirring effects. In post-Newtonian approximations, this equation gives out the same results as those of Papapetrou equation. Effect of the deviation of geode…
The Ricci Rotation Coefficients in the description of trajectories of spinning test particles off-equatorial planes in a rotational gravitational field
The motion of spinning test-masses in curved space-time is described with a covariant hamiltonian formalism. A large class of hamiltonians can be used with the model- independent Poisson-Dirac brackets, to obtain equations of motion. Here we apply it to the minimal hamiltonian and also to a non-minimal hamiltonian, describing the gravi- tational Stern-Gerlach force. And a note on ISCO has been added.
The motion of a spinning test particle given by the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations is studied on an exterior vacuum C metric background spacetime describing the accelerated motion of a spherically symmetric gravitational source. We consider circular orbits of the particle around the direction of acceleration of the source. The symmetries of this configuration lead to the reduction of the differential equations of motion to algebraic relations. The spin supplementary conditions as well as the coupling between the spin of the particle and the acceleration of the source are discussed.
The scattering of spinning test particles by a Schwarzschild black hole is studied. The motion is described according to the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon model for extended bodies in a given gravitational background field. The equatorial plane is taken as the orbital plane, the spin vector being orthogonal to it with constant magnitude. The equations of motion are solved analytically in closed form to first-order in spin and the solution is used to compute corrections to the standard geodesic scattering angle as well as capture cross section by the black hole.
Using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations together with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition, we study the circular orbits of a spinning test particle moving in the equatorial plane of a quantum improved Rotating Black Hole (RBH) spacetime. This background metric incorporates a position-dependent gravitational constant $G(r)$ and its behavior determines the quantum corrections to the properties of the Innermost Stable Circular Orbit (ISCO). The obtained results show that the radius of the event horizon as well as the radius of the ISCO for the quantum improved RBH are smaller than t…
We derive the equations of motion of an electrically neutral test particle for modified gravity theories in which the covariant divergence of the ordinary matter energy-momentum tensor dose not vanish (i.e. $\nabla_μT^{μν}\neq0$). In fact, we generalize the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations by deriving a general form for the equations of motion of a test particle. Furthermore, using the generalized Mathisson-Papapetrou equations, we investigate the equations of motion of a pole-dipole (spinning) particle in the context of Modified Gravity (MOG).
It is shown that geometric optical description of electromagnetic wave with account of its polarization in curved space-time can be obtained straightforwardly from the classical variational principle for electromagnetic field. For this end the entire functional space of electromagnetic fields must be reduced to its subspace of locally plane monochromatic waves. We have formulated the constraints under which the entire functional space of electromagnetic fields reduces to its subspace of locally plane monochromatic waves. These constraints introduce variables of another kind which specify a fie…
The motion of massless spinning test particles is investigated using the Newman-Penrose formalism within the Mathisson-Papapetrou model extended to massless particles by Mashhoon and supplemented by the Pirani condition. When the "multipole reduction world line" lies along a principal null direction of an algebraically special vacuum spacetime, the equations of motion can be explicitly integrated. Examples are given for some familiar spacetimes of this type in the interest of shedding some light on the consequences of this model.
We study the behaviour of spinning test particles in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Using Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion we confine our attention to spatially circular orbits and search for observable effects which could eventually discriminate among the standard supplementary conditions namely the Corinaldesi-Papapetrou, Pirani and Tulczyjew. We find that if the world line chosen for the multipole reduction and whose unit tangent we denote as $U$ is a circular orbit then also the generalized momentum $P$ of the spinning test particle is tangent to a circular orbit even though $P$ and …
We discuss the motion of extended objects in a spacetime by considering a gravitational field created by these objects. We define multipole moments of the objects as a classification by Lie group SO(3). Then, we construct an energy-momentum tensor for the objects and derive equations of motion from it. As a result, we reproduce the Papapetrou equations for a spinning particle. Furthermore, we will show that we can obtain more simple equations than the Papapetrou equations by changing the center-of-mass.
The hypothesis of coupling between spin and rotation introduced long ago by Mashhoon is examined in the context of "1+3" and "3+1" space-time splitting techniques, either in special or in general relativity. Its content is discussed in terms of classical (Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon-Souriou model) as well as quantum physics (Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for the Dirac field in an external field), reviewing and discussing all the relevant theoretical literature concerning the existence of such effect. Some original contributions are also included.
We investigate the dynamics of relativistic spinning test particles in the spacetime of a rotating black hole using the Papapetrou equations. We use the method of Lyapunov exponents to determine whether the orbits exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions, a signature of chaos. In the case of maximally spinning equal-mass binaries (a limiting case that violates the test-particle approximation) we find unambiguous positive Lyapunov exponents that come in pairs +/- lambda, a characteristic of Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We find no evidence for nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents for phys…
We revisit the conserved quantities of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew equations describing the motion of spinning particles on a fixed background. Assuming Ricci-flatness and the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor, we demonstrate that besides the two non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities, i.e. conserved at linear order in the spin, found by Rüdiger, non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities are in one-to-one correspondence with non-trivial mixed-symmetry Killing tensors. We prove that no such stationary and axisymmetric mixed-symmetry Killing tensor exists on the Kerr geometry. We discuss th…
We study the motion of spinning test particles in Kerr spacetime using the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations; we impose different supplementary conditions among the well known Corinaldesi-Papapetrou, Pirani and Tulczyjew's and analyze their physical implications in order to decide which is the most natural to use. We find that if the particle's center of mass world line, namely the one chosen for the multipole reduction, is a spatially circular orbit (sustained by the tidal forces due to the spin) then the generalized momentum $P$ of the test particle is also tangent to a spatially circular orbit…
We study the motion of neutral and charged spinning bodies in curved space-time in the test-particle limit. We construct equations of motion using a closed covariant Poisson-Dirac bracket formulation which allows for different choices of the hamiltonian. We derive conditions for the existence of constants of motion and apply the formalism to the case of spherically symmetric space-times. We show that the periastron of a spinning body in a stable orbit in a Schwarzschild or Reissner-Nordstrøm background not only precesses, but also varies radially. By analysing the stability conditions for circ…
It has been shown that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the horizon of an extremal Kerr black hole. Previous studies mainly focused on geodesic motions of particles. In this paper, we consider spinning test particles whose orbits are non-geodesic. By employing the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation, we find the critical angular momentum satisfies $J=2E$ for extremal Kerr black holes. Although the conserved angular momentum $J$ and energy $E$ have been redefined in the presence of spin, the critical condition remains the same form. If a particle with this angular momentum collides with…
New representation of the exact Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations at the Mathisson-Pirani condition in the Kerr metric which does not contain the third-order derivatives of the coordinates of a spinning particle is obtained. For this purpose the integrals of energy and angular momentum of the spinning particle as well as a differential relationship following from the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations are used. The form of these equations is adapted for their computer integration with the aim of further investigations of the influence of the spin-curvature interaction on the particle's be…
Mimicking the description of spinning particles in General Relativity, the Fermat Principle is extended to spinning photons. Linearization of the resulting Papapetrou-Souriau type equations yields the semiclassical model used recently to derive the ``Optical Hall Effect'' (alias the ``Optical Magnus Effect'') for polarized light.
We write the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion for a spinning particle in a stationary spacetime using the quasi-Maxwell formalism and give an interpretation of the coupling between spin and curvature. The formalism is then used to compute equilibrium positions for spinning particles in the NUT spacetime.
In this paper we investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a spinning test particle moving in the rotating Maxwell-dilaton black hole spacetime. By using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations along with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition, we find the equations of motion in the equatorial plane and, from the radial equation, it is obtained the effective potential for the description of the particle's motion. The obtained trajectories show that the ISCO radii for spinning particles moving in rotating charged backgrounds are always smaller than those obtained in the cor…
We use the frequency and time domain Teukolsky formalism to calculate gravitational-wave fluxes from a spinning body on a bound eccentric equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. The spinning body is represented as a point particle following the pole-dipole approximation of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations. Reformulating these equations we are not only able to find the trajectory of a spinning particle in terms of its constants of motion, but also to provide a method to calculate the azimuthal and the radial frequency of this trajectory. Using these orbital quantities, we introduce t…
Using the Teukolsky and Sasaki-Nakamura formalisms for the perterbations around a Kerr black hole, we calculate the energy flux of gravitational waves induced by a {\it spinning} particle of mass $μ$ and spin $S$ moving in circular orbits near the equatorial plain of a rotating black hole of mass $M (\gg μ)$ and spin $Ma$. The calculations are performed by using the recently developed post-Newtonian expansion technique of the Teukolsky equation. To evaluate the source terms of perturbations caused by a {\it spinning} particle, we used the equations of motion of a spinning particle derived by P…
This work provides gravitational wave energy and angular momentum asymptotic fluxes from a spinning body moving on generic orbits in a Kerr spacetime up to linear in spin approximation. To achieve this, we have developed a new frequency domain Teukolsky equation solver that calculates asymptotic amplitudes from generic orbits of spinning bodies with their spin aligned with the total orbital angular momentum. However, the energy and angular momentum fluxes from these orbits in the linear in spin approximation are appropriate for adiabatic models of extreme mass ratio inspirals even for spins no…
The motion of spinning test particles around a traversable wormhole is investigated using the Mathisson Papapetrous Dixon equations, which couple the Riemann tensor with the antisymmetric tensor $S^{ab}$, related to the spin of the particle. Hence, we study the effective potential, circular orbits, and innermost stable circular orbit ISCO of spinning particles. We found that the spin affects significantly the location of the ISCO, in contrast with the motion of nonspinning particles, where the ISCO is the same in both the upper and lower universes. On the other hand, since the dynamical fourmo…
We obtain Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew-Dixon equations of a rotating body with given values of spin and momentum starting from Lagrangian action without auxiliary variables. MPTD-equations correspond to minimal interaction of our spinning particle with gravity. We shortly discuss some novel properties deduced from the Lagrangian form of MPTD-equations: emergence of an effective metric instead of the original one, non-commutativity of coordinates of representative point of the body, spin corrections to Newton potential due to the effective metric as well as spin corrections to the expression …
We investigate the scattering of a spinning test particle by a Kerr black hole within the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon model to linear order in spin. The particle's spin and orbital angular momentum are taken to be aligned with the black hole's spin. Both the particle's mass and spin length are assumed to be small in comparison with the characteristic length scale of the background curvature, in order to avoid backreaction effects. We analytically compute the modifications due to the particle's spin to the scattering angle, the periastron shift, and the condition for capture by the black hole, e…
First, we stress that for correct description of highly relativistic fermions in a gravitational field it is necessary to have an equation which in the limiting transition to the classical (non-quantum) case corresponds to the exact Mathisson-Papapetrou equations. According to these equations the spin in general relativity is Fermi-transported, and the parallel transport of spin is realized only in some approximation. The traditional general-relativistic Dirac equation (1929) is based on the parallel transported spinors and does not ensure the correspondent transition. Second, because in the r…
It has been proved that arbitrarily high-energy collision between two particles can occur near the horizon of an extremal Kerr black hole as long as the energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$ of one particle satisfies a critical relation, which is called the BSW mechanism. Previous researchers mainly concentrate on geodesic motion of particles. In this paper, we will take spinning particle which won't move along a timelike geodesic into our consideration, hence, another parameter $s$ describing the particle's spin angular momentum was introduced. By employing the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equati…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations for the motion of electrically neutral massive spinning particles are analysed, in the pole-dipole approximation, in an Einstein-Maxwell plane-wave background spacetime. By exploiting the high symmetry of such spacetimes these equations are reduced to a system of tractable ordinary differential equations. Classes of exact solutions are given, corresponding to particular initial conditions for the directions of the particle spin relative to the direction of the propagating background fields. For Einstein-Maxwell pulses a scattering cross section is…
A comparative analysis of the Mathisson-Papapetrou and Pomeransky-Khriplovich equations is presented. Motion of spinning particles and their spins in gravitational fields and noninertial frames is considered. The angular velocity of spin precession defined by the Pomeransky-Khriplovich equations depends on the choice of the tetrad. The connection of such a dependence with the Thomas precession is established. General properties of spin interactions with gravitational fields are discussed. It is shown that dynamics of classical and quantum spins in curved spacetimes is identical. A manifestatio…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are used for investigations of influence of the spin-gravity coupling on a highly relativistic spinning particle in Schwarzschild's field. It is established that interaction of the particle spin with the gravitomagnetic components of the field, estimated in the proper frame of the particle, causes the large acceleration of the spinning particle relative to geodesic free fall. As a result the accelerated charged spinning particle can generate intensive electromagnetic radiation when its velocity is highly relativistic. The significant contribution of the highl…
We study chaos dynamics of spinning particles in Kerr spacetime of rotating black holes use the Papapetrou equations by numerical integration. Because of spin, this system exists many chaos solutions, and exhibits some exceptional dynamic character. We investigate the relations between the orbits chaos and the spin magnitude S, pericenter, polar angle and Kerr rotation parameter a by means of a kind of brand new Fast Lyapulov Indicator (FLI) which is defined in general relativity. The classical definition of Lyapulov exponent (LE) perhaps fails in curve spacetime. And we emphasize that the Poi…
