Introducing the well known Papapetrou field as the gravitoelectromagnetic field tensor, we express the Maxwell-type part of the 3-dimensional quasi-Maxwell form of the {\it vacuum} Einstein field equations in terms of differential forms, analogous to their electromagnetic counterparts in curved spacetimes. Using the same formalism we introduce the junction conditions on non-null hypersurfaces in terms of the introduced gravitoelectromagnetic 4-vector fields and apply them to the case of the Van Stockum interior and exterior solutions.
Based on the coupling between the spin of a particle and gravitoelectromagnetic field, the equation of motion of a spinning test particle in gravitational field is deduced. From this equation of motion, it is found that the motion of a spinning particle deviates from the geodesic trajectory, and this deviation originates from the coupling between the spin of the particle and gravitoelectromagnetic field, which is also the origin of Lense-Thirring effects. In post-Newtonian approximations, this equation gives out the same results as those of Papapetrou equation. Effect of the deviation of geode…
We discuss the linear gravitoelectromagnetic approach used to solve Einstein equations in the weak-field and slow-motion approximation, which is a powerful tool to explain, by analogy with electromagnetism, several gravitational effects in the Solar System, where the approximation holds true. In particular, we discuss the analogy according to which Einstein equations can be written as Maxwell-like equations and focus on the definition of the gravitoelectromagnetic fields in non stationary conditions. Furthermore, we examine to what extent, starting from a given solution of Einstein equations, …
We demonstrate how one should transform correctly quasi-isotropic coordinates to Weyl-Papapetrou coordinates in order to compare the metric around a rotating star that has been constructed numerically in the former coordinates with an axially symmetric stationary metric that is given through an analytical form in the latter coordinates. Since a stationary metric associated with an isolated object that is built numerically partly refers to a non-vacuum solution (interior of the star) the transformation of its coordinates to Weyl-Papapetrou coordinates, which are usually used to describe vacuum …
The Cotton-York and Simon-Mars tensors in stationary vacuum spacetimes are studied in the language of the congruence approach pioneered by Hawking and Ellis. Their relationships with the Papapetrou field defined by the stationary Killing congruence and with a recent characterization of the Kerr spacetime in terms of the alignment between of the principal null directions of the Weyl tensor with those of the Papapetrou field are also investigated in this more transparent language.
In this paper, we find the energy-momentum distribution of stationary axisymmetric spacetimes in the context of teleparallel theory by using M$\ddot{o}$ller prescription. The metric under consideration is the generalization of the Weyl metrics called the Lewis-Papapetrou metric. The class of stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Einstein field equations has been studied by Galtsov to include the gravitational effect of an {\it external} source. Such spacetimes are also astrophysically important as they describe the exterior of a body in equilibrium. The energy density turns out to be non-va…

The energy-momentum complexes of Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou, and Weinberg give the same and meaningful results for the energy and momentum of the Bonnor spacetime describing the gravitational field of a stationary beam of light. The results support the Cooperstock hypothesis.
Using the Ehlers transformation along with the gravitoelectromagnetic approach to stationary spacetimes we start from the Morgan-Morgan disk spacetime (without radial pressure) as the seed metric and find its corresponding stationary spacetime. As expected from the Ehlers transformation the stationary spacetime obtained suffers from a NUT-type singularity and the new parameter introduced in the stationary case could be interpreted as the gravitomagnetic monopole charge (or the NUT factor). As a consequence of this singularity there are closed timelike curves (CTCs) in the singular region of th…
Parallel transport along circular orbits in orthogonally transitive stationary axisymmetric spacetimes is described explicitly relative to Lie transport in terms of the electric and magnetic parts of the induced connection. The influence of both the gravitoelectromagnetic fields associated with the zero angular momentum observers and of the Frenet-Serret parameters of these orbits as a function of their angular velocity is seen on the behavior of parallel transport through its representation as a parameter-dependent Lorentz transformation between these two inner-product preserving transports w…
The transformation which adds (or removes) NUT charge when it is applied to electrovacuum, axisymmetric and stationary space-times is studied. After analysing the Ehlers and the Reina-Treves transformations we propose a new one, more precise in the presence of the Maxwell electromagnetic field. The enhanced Ehlers transformation proposed turns out to act as a gravitomagnetic duality, analogously to the electromagnetic duality, but for gravity: it rotates the mass charge into the gravomagnetic (or NUT) charge. As an example the Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole is obtained with the help of this enhanc…
We investigate the existence and phenomenology of stable photon orbits (SPOs) in stationary axisymmetric electrovacuum spacetimes in four dimensions. First, we review the classification of equatorial circular photon orbits on Kerr-Newman spacetimes in the charge-spin plane. Second, using a Hamiltonian formulation, we show that Reissner-Nordström di-holes (a family encompassing the Majumdar-Papapetrou and Weyl-Bach special cases) admit SPOs, in a certain parameter regime that we investigate. Third, we explore the transition from order to chaos for typical SPOs bounded within a toroidal region a…
In this paper, we study the \texttt{Ehlers' transformation} (sometimes called gravitational duality rotation) for \texttt{reciprocal} static metrics. First we introduce the concept of reciprocal metric. We prove a theorem which shows how we can construct a certain new static solution of Einstein field equations using a seed metric. Later we investigate the family of stationary spacetimes of such reciprocal metrics. The key here is a theorem from Ehlers', which relates any static vacuum solution to a unique stationary metric. The stationary metric has a magnetic charge. The spacetime represents…
Modulo conventional scale factors, the Simon and Simon-Mars tensors are defined for stationary vacuum spacetimes so that their equality follows from the Bianchi identities of the second kind. In the nonvacuum case one can absorb additional source terms into a redefinition of the Simon tensor so that this equality is maintained. Among the electrovacuum class of solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, the expression for the Simon tensor in the Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT spacetime in terms of the Ernst potential is formally the same as in the vacuum case (modulo a scale factor), and its vanishing …
We develop solution-generating techniques for stationary metrics with one angular momentum and axial symmetry, in the presence of a cosmological constant and in arbitrary spacetime dimension. In parallel we study the related lower dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton static spacetimes with a Liouville potential. For vanishing cosmological constant, we show that the field equations in more than four dimensions decouple into a four dimensional Papapetrou system and a Weyl system. We also show that given any four dimensional 'seed' solution, one can construct an infinity of higher dimensional sol…
We write the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations of motion for a spinning particle in a stationary spacetime using the quasi-Maxwell formalism and give an interpretation of the coupling between spin and curvature. The formalism is then used to compute equilibrium positions for spinning particles in the NUT spacetime.
We study linear nonradial perturbations and stability of a marginal stable circular orbit (MSCO) such as the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes which possess a reflection symmetry with respect to the equatorial plane. The proposed approach is applied to Kerr solution and Majumdar-Papapetrou solution to Einstein equation. Finally, we reexamine MSCOs for a modified metric of a rapidly spinning black hole that has been recently proposed by Johannsen and Psaltis [PRD, 83, 124015 (2011)]. We show that, for the Johannsen and Psaltis's mode…
Recent researches suggest an analogy between the theory of general relativity (GR) and fluid dynamics. As a result of this analogy, the Navier-Stokes equations and Einstein field equations are the same, and it is possible to study the properties of space-time by using fluid mechanics. In this paper, we present a new model to describe gravitational phenomena by an inviscid and compressible fluid called space-time fluid (STF). The analogy method is used to obtain the gravity field of both static and rotating masses from the flow field of STF around static and rotating point sinks. In addition, e…
We study stationary and axisymmetric solutions of General Relativity, i.e. pure gravity, in four or higher dimensions. D-dimensional stationary and axisymmetric solutions are defined as having D-2 commuting Killing vector fields. We derive a canonical form of the metric for such solutions that effectively reduces the Einstein equations to a differential equation on an axisymmetric D-2 by D-2 matrix field living in three-dimensional flat space (apart from a subclass of solutions that instead reduce to a set of equations on a D-2 by D-2 matrix field living in two-dimensional flat space). This ge…
In this thesis we study aspects of strong-field gravitational lensing by black holes in general relativity, with a particular focus on the role of integrability and chaos in geodesic motion. We first investigate binary black hole shadows using the Majumdar-Papapetrou static binary black hole (or di-hole) solution. It is shown that the propagation of null geodesics on this spacetime background is a natural example of chaotic scattering. We demonstrate that the binary black hole shadows exhibit a self-similar fractal structure akin to the Cantor set. Next, we use techniques from the field of non…
We develop a geometric criterion that unambiguously characterizes and also provides a systematic and effective computational procedure for finding all the residual symmetries of any gravitational Ansatz . We apply the criterion to several examples starting with the Collinson Ansatz for circular stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. We reproduce the residual symmetries already known for this Ansatz including their conformal symmetry, for which we identify the corresponding infinite generators spanning the two related copies of the Witt algebra. We also consider the noncircular generalization of t…
The problem of having an accurate description of the spacetime around neutron stars is of great astrophysical interest. For astrophysical applications, one needs to have a metric that captures all the properties of the spacetime around a neutron star. Furthermore, an accurate appropriately parameterised metric, i.e., a metric that is given in terms of parameters that are directly related to the physical structure of the neutron star, could be used to solve the inverse problem, which is to infer the properties of the structure of a neutron star from astrophysical observations. In this work we p…
