Time Averaged VHE Spectrum of Mrk 421 in 2005

The blazar Mrk421 was observed independently, but contemporaneously, in 2005 at TeV energies by MAGIC, the Whipple 10m telescope, and by a single VERITAS telescope during the construction phase of operations. A comparison of the time averaged spectra, in what was a relatively quiescent state, demonstrates the level of agreement between instruments. In addition, the increased sensitivity of the new generation instruments, and ever decreasing energy thresholds, questions how best to compare new observational data with archival results.

VHE gamma-ray spectral properties of the blazars Mrk 501 and Mrk 421 from CAT observations in 1997 and 1998

The Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission of the BL Lacertae objects Markarian 501 and Markarian 421 has been observed by the CAT Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope in 1997 and 1998. The spectrum extraction method is presented, and the spectral properties of both sources are compared in different activity states. Theoretical implications for jet astrophysics are discussed.

Multi-wavelength Observations of VHE BL Lac Objects

We present multi-wavelength observations of the very high energy (VHE, E >250 GeV) gamma-ray sources Mrk 421 and Mrk 501. The VHE data presented here were taken with the Whipple Observatory 10m gamma-ray telescope. In the Mrk 421 campaign, conducted in 1995 April-May, correlations were observed between VHE gamma-ray, X-ray, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and possibly R-band emission. The X-rays and gamma rays vary together with similar flux amplitude while the EUV photons lag the X-rays and gamma rays by ~1 day and have a lower variability amplitude. VHE Spectral Properties of Mrk 501 with the CAT telescope

We report here observations of the active galactic nucleus Mrk 501, at energies above 250 GeV carried out with the CAT atmospheric imaging telescope from March 1997 to Autumn 1998. This source was in a high state of activity at several different wavelengths in 1997, and the observed flux at TeV energies has been seen to change by a factor of ~ 20 from from 1995 and 1996 fluxes. CAT observations also indicate a curved spectrum at TeV energies, and a correlation between the gamma-ray intensity and the spectral hardness. The temporal variability and the TeV spectral properties are examined.

Detection of Vhe Gamma-Rays from MRK 501 with the Cat Imaging Telescope

The CAT imaging telescope on the site on the former solar plant Themis has been observing gamma-rays from Mrk501 above 220 GeV in March and April 1997. This source is shown to be highly variable and the light curve is presented. The detected gamma-ray rate for the most intense flare is in excess of 10 per minute.

Observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in Spring 2006 with VERITAS

VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Telescope Imaging Array System, is an array of four imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona. It is sensitive to gamma rays at energies above 100 GeV. Here, we discuss the results of observations of two well known VHE blazars, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, during Spring 2006 which were made with the first two telescopes during the comissioning phase of VERITAS. Optimizing the angular resolution of the HEGRA telescope system to study the emission region of VHE gamma rays in the Crab Nebula

The HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provides for specially selected classes of events an angular resolution of better than 3'. By comparing the measured angular distribution of TeV gamma rays from the Crab Nebula with the distribution expected on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations, and with measurements of gamma rays from the point source Mrk 501, we conclude that the rms size of the VHE gamma-ray emission region in the Crab Nebula is less than 1.5'.

Multiwavelength Observations of a Flare from Markarian 501

We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Study of the Flux and Spectral Variations in the VHE Emission from the Blazar Markarian 501, with the MAGIC Telescope

The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed above 100 GeV with the MAGIC Telescope during May, June and July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument made possible the detection of the source with high significance in each of the observing nights. Variable VHE gamma-ray emission from Markarian 501

The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed at energies above 0.10 TeV with the MAGIC telescope from May through July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument enabled the determination of the flux and spectrum of the source on a night-by-night basis. Throughout our observational campaign, the flux from Mrk 501 was found to vary by an order of magnitude. Intrinsic constraints on very high energy emission in gamma-ray loud blazars

Photons with very high energy up to TeV (VHE) emitted from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide some invaluable information of the origin of $\gam$-ray emission. Although 66 blazars have been detected by {\it EGRET}, only three low redshift X-ray selected BL Lacs (Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 1ES 2344+514) are conclusive TeV emitters (PKS 2155-304 is a potential TeV emitter) since VHE photons may be absorbed by cosmological background infrared photons ({\it external} absorption). Very High Energy Gamma-ray spectral properties of Mrk 501 from CAT Cerenkov telescope observations in 1997

The BL Lac object Mrk 501 went into a very high state of activity during 1997, both in VHE gamma-rays and X-rays. We present here results from observations at energies above 250 GeV carried out between March and October 1997 with the CAT Cerenkov imaging Telescope. A Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Spectrum of 1ES 2344+514

The BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object 1ES 2344+514 (1ES 2344), at a redshift of 0.044, was discovered as a source of very high energy (VHE) gamma rays by the Whipple Collaboration in 1995 \citep{2344Catanese98}. This detection was recently confirmed by the HEGRA Collaboration \citep{2344Hegra03}. As is typical for high-frequency peaked blazars, the VHE gamma-ray emission is highly variable. Observations of TeV gamma-rays from Mrk 421 during Dec. 2005 to Apr. 2006 with the TACTIC telescope

The TACTIC $γ$-ray telescope has observed Mrk 421 on 66 clear nights from Dec. 07, 2005 to Apr. 30, 2006, totalling $\sim$ 202 hours of on-source observations. Here, we report the detection of flaring activity from the source at $\geq$ 1 TeV energy and the time-averaged differential $γ$-ray spectrum in the energy range 1-11 TeV for the data taken between Dec. 27, 2005 to Feb. 07, 2006 when the source was in a relatively higher state as compared to the rest of the observation period. Very High Energy gamma-ray observations of Mrk 501 using TACTIC imaging gamma-ray telescope during 2005-06

In this paper we report on the Markarian 501 results obtained during our TeV $γ$-ray observations from March 11 to May 12, 2005 and February 28 to May 7, 2006 for 112.5 hours with the TACTIC $γ$-ray telescope. During 2005 observations for 45.7 hours, the source was found to be in a low state and we have placed an upper limit of 4.62 $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 3$σ$ level on the integrated TeV $γ$-ray flux above 1 TeV from the source direction. HESS Observations and VLT Spectroscopy of PG 1553+113

AIMS: The properties of the very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the high-frequency peaked BL Lac PG 1553+113 are investigated. An attempt is made to measure the currently unknown redshift of this object. METHODS: VHE Observations of PG 1553+113 were made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in 2005 and 2006. Suzaku observations of Markarian 335: evidence for a distributed reflector

We report on a 151 ks net exposure Suzaku observation of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335. The 0.5-40 keV spectrum contains a broad Fe line, a strong soft excess below about 2 keV and a Compton hump around 20-30 keV. We find that a model consisting of a power law and two reflectors provides the best fit to the time-averaged spectrum. In this model, an ionized, heavily blurred, inner reflector produces most of the soft excess, while an almost neutral outer reflector (outside ~40 r_g) produces most of the Fe line emission. H.E.S.S. Observations of PKS 2155-304

The high-frequency peaked BL Lac PKS 2155-304 at redshift z=0.117 has been detected with high significance (~45 sigma) at energies greater than 160 GeV, using the H.E.S.S. stereoscopic array of imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. A strong signal is found in each of the data sets corresponding to the dark periods of July and October, 2002, and June-September, 2003. TeV blazar gamma-ray emission produced by a cooling pile-up particle energy distribution function

We propose a time-dependent one-zone model based on a quasi-Maxwellian `pile-up' distribution in order to explain the time-averaged high energy emission of TeV blazars. The instantaneous spectra are the result of the synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton emission (SSC) of ultra-relativistic leptons. The particle energy distribution function (EDF) is computed in a self-consistent way, taking into account an injection term of fresh particles, a possible pair creation term, and the particles radiative cooling.
