In this paper we report on the Markarian 501 results obtained during our TeV $γ$-ray observations from March 11 to May 12, 2005 and February 28 to May 7, 2006 for 112.5 hours with the TACTIC $γ$-ray telescope. During 2005 observations for 45.7 hours, the source was found to be in a low state and we have placed an upper limit of 4.62 $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 3$σ$ level on the integrated TeV $γ$-ray flux above 1 TeV from the source direction. However, during the 2006 observations for 66.8h, detailed data analysis revealed the presence of a TeV $γ$-ray signal from the source with a statistical significance of 7.5$σ$ above $E_γ\geq$ 1 TeV. The time averaged differential energy spectrum of the source in the energy range 1-11 TeV is found to match well with the power law function of the form ($dΦ/dE=f_0 E^{-Γ}$) with $f_0=(1.66\pm0.52)\times 10^{-11}cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1}$ and $Γ=2.80\pm0.27$.
The TACTIC $γ$-ray telescope has observed Mrk 421 on 66 clear nights from Dec. 07, 2005 to Apr. 30, 2006, totalling $\sim$ 202 hours of on-source observations. Here, we report the detection of flaring activity from the source at $\geq$ 1 TeV energy and the time-averaged differential $γ$-ray spectrum in the energy range 1-11 TeV for the data taken between Dec. 27, 2005 to Feb. 07, 2006 when the source was in a relatively higher state as compared to the rest of the observation period. Analysis of this data spell, comprising about $\sim$97h reveals the presence of a $\sim 12.0 σ$ $γ$-ray signal w…
The Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission of the BL Lacertae objects Markarian 501 and Markarian 421 has been observed by the CAT Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope in 1997 and 1998. The spectrum extraction method is presented, and the spectral properties of both sources are compared in different activity states. Theoretical implications for jet astrophysics are discussed.
We have developed the energy measurement method which based on stereoscopic observation with multiple telescopes for TeV gamma rays. Energy resolution obtained by this method was 23 %. The energy spectrum of the gamma-ray flares of Markarian 501 in 1997 was also obtained using this techniques. We have confirmed the bending or the cutoff of the energy spectrum around several TeV.
We report results of soft gamma-ray observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies Arp 220, Mrk 273, and Mrk 231 in order to test whether the infrared radiation from these sources originates from buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Only upper limits are measured, implying that the emergent soft gamma-ray luminosities are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the infrared luminosities. Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport through tori are used to infer the minimum column densities $N_H$ required to block transmission of soft gamma-rays from a buried AGN, assuming that spectra of…
Energy spectra of gamma-ray blazars may contain an imprint from the cosmic infrared background radiation due to gamma-ray absorption (pair-production) by soft photons constituting the extragalactic background light (EBL). The signature of this imprint depends on the spectral shape of the EBL. In this work we correct the observed spectra of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 for absorption using different possible realizations of the EBL, consistent with the most recent detections and limits. We present the intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum of these sources for the different EBL scenarios. These spectra reveal the…
We report on observations of Markarian 421 made with the Whipple 10m Cerenkov telescope and the RXTE satellite during a multi-wavelength campaign in December 2002 and January 2003, initiated by a Whipple target of opportunity. The observations revealed several flares with flux levels between 1 and 2 times the flux of the Crab Nebula. We will discuss the temporal properties, including evidence of X-ray/TeV gamma-ray flux correlation.
The BL Lac object (blazar) Mrk 421 was observed during its outburst in April 2004 with the Whipple 10 m telescope for a total of about 24.5 hours. The measured gamma-ray rate varied substantially over the range from 4 to 10 gamma's/min and eventually exceeded the steady gamma-ray rate of the Crab Nebula (standard candle) by a factor of 3. The overall significance of the gamma-ray signal exceeded 70 sigma and the total number of excess events was more than 10,000. The signal light curve does not show any particular variability pattern. This unique Mrk 421 outburst enabled the measurement of a h…
We present multi-wavelength observations of the very high energy (VHE, E >250 GeV) gamma-ray sources Mrk 421 and Mrk 501. The VHE data presented here were taken with the Whipple Observatory 10m gamma-ray telescope. In the Mrk 421 campaign, conducted in 1995 April-May, correlations were observed between VHE gamma-ray, X-ray, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and possibly R-band emission. The X-rays and gamma rays vary together with similar flux amplitude while the EUV photons lag the X-rays and gamma rays by ~1 day and have a lower variability amplitude. In the Mrk 501 campaign, conducted in 1997 April…
The CAT imaging telescope on the site on the former solar plant Themis has been observing gamma-rays from Mrk501 above 220 GeV in March and April 1997. This source is shown to be highly variable and the light curve is presented. The detected gamma-ray rate for the most intense flare is in excess of 10 per minute.
The TACTIC $γ$-ray telescope, equipped with a light collector of area $\sim$9.5m$^2$ and a medium resolution imaging camera of 349-pixels, has been in operation at Mt.Abu, India since 2001. This paper describes the main features of its various subsystems and its overall performance with regard to (a) tracking accuracy of its 2-axes drive system, (b) spot size of the light collector, (c) back-end signal processing electronics and topological trigger generation scheme, (d) data acquisition and control system and (e) relative and absolute gain calibration methodology. Using a trigger field of vie…
Based on the detected variability time scales of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission, and the observed multiwavelength photon spectrum, of Mrk 421 we place constraints on the allowed parameter space (magnetic field and Doppler factor of the emission region) for the homogeneous synchrotron self-Compton model. The spectra calculated for the allowed parameters are marginally consistent with the available spectral information above $\sim 1$ TeV reported by the Whipple Observatory in the case of a 1 day flare time scale. However, for the recently reported very short duration flares varying on a time s…
We use the new results of the HEGRA detector on the TeV gamma-ray emission from MKN 501 to set upper limits on the energy density of the cosmic infrared background (CIRB). Contrary to previous interpretations of the gamma-ray spectrum of MKN 421 as showing an intergalactic absorption cutoff at 5 TeV, the observed spectrum of MKN 501 extends beyond 10 TeV and appears to be unattenuated by gamma-gamma collisions with the low-energy CIRB photons. The upper limits on the CIRB intensity -- derived both assuming an `a priori' shape for the CIRB spectrum and without model-dependent assumptions -- are…
We have investigated TeV gamma-ray emissions from nearby X-ray selected BL Lac objects using the Utah Seven Telescope Array for more than two years. These objects can be considered as potential sources of TeV gamma rays with inverse compton model. The gamma-ray flares from Mrk421 and Mrk501 found in these observation will be reported.
The Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission of the closest BL Lacertae objects Markarian 501 and Markarian 421 has been observed by the CAT telescope in 1997 and 1998. In 1997 Mrk 501 exhibited a remarkable series of flares, with a VHE emission peaking above 250 GeV. The source showed correlated emissions in the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray bands, together with intensity-spectral hardness correlation in the latter energy range. During small flares in 1998, Mrk 421 became the second extragalactic source detected by CAT. Its spectral properties are compared to those of Mrk 501. Theoretical implicat…
Mrk 421 is the first TeV blazar found to exhibit significant spectral variability during strong flaring activity, showing hardening of the TeV spectrum in high emission states. Mrk 421 is also known to exhibit flux variability on time scales as short as 15 minutes. In this paper we present studies of hourly spectral variability of Mrk 421 in 2001 using data from the Whipple Observatory 10m gamma-ray telescope.
We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV gamma-ray blazar Markarian (Mrk) 421 performed during December 2002 and January 2003. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple gamma-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6m, WIYN 0.9m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV gamma-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) ban…
The BL Lac object Mrk 501 went into a very high state of activity during 1997, both in VHE gamma-rays and X-rays. We present here results from observations at energies above 250 GeV carried out between March and October 1997 with the CAT Cerenkov imaging Telescope. The average differential spectrum between 30 GeV and 13 TeV shows significant curvature and is well represented by phi_0 * E_TeV^{-(alpha + beta*log10(E_TeV))}, with: phi_0 = 5.19 +/- 0.13 {stat} +/- 0.12 {sys-MC} +1.66/-1.04 {sys-atm} * 10^-11 /cm^2/s/TeV alpha = 2.24 +/- 0.04 {stat} +/- 0.05 {sys} beta = 0.50 +/- 0.07 {stat} (negl…
VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Telescope Imaging Array System, is an array of four imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona. It is sensitive to gamma rays at energies above 100 GeV. Here, we discuss the results of observations of two well known VHE blazars, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, during Spring 2006 which were made with the first two telescopes during the comissioning phase of VERITAS. During most of this time Mrk 421 was in an unusually active state while Mrk 501 was in a much lower flux state. As such, these observations provided an opportunity to test the…
Recent observations of the TeV gamma-ray spectra of the two closest active galactic nuclei (AGNs), Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) and Markarian 421 (Mrk 421), by the Whipple and HEGRA collaborations have stimulated efforts to estimate or limit the spectral energy density (SED) of extragalactic background light (EBL) which causes attenuation of TeV photons via pair-production when they travel cosmological distances. In spite of the lack of any distinct cutoff-like feature in the spectra of Mrk 501 and Mrk 421 (in the interval 0.26-10 TeV) which could clearly indicate the presence of such a photon abso…
Daily monitoring of Mrk 421 in the X-ray and TeV bands during the first half of 2004 showed rapid flaring events above an elevated base flux level, culminating from March to May 2004 at an average flux level matching the highest detected flux state in 2001. Here we summarise the daily X-ray spectral variability observed with the RXTE-PCA instrument. We also explore the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray connection from near simultaneous data obtained using the Whipple 10m Cherenkov imaging telescope.
The CELESTE atmospheric Cherenkov detector ran until June 2004. It has detected several gamma-ray flares of Mrk 421 since 1999. The new data analysis provides better background rejection. We compare our light curves with X-ray data. We significantly improved our understanding of the atmosphere, and of the optical throughput of the detector. This will allow a spectral measurement for Mrk 421 with smaller uncertainties and a more sensitive search for a signal from Mrk 501.
Very high energy (~ TeV) $γ$-rays from blazars are attenuated by photons from the extragalactic background light (EBL). Observations of blazars can therefore provide an ideal opportunity for determining the EBL intensity if their intrinsic spectrum is known. Conversely, knowledge of the EBL intensity can be used to determine the intrinsic blazar spectrum. Unfortunately, neither the EBL intensity nor the intrinsic blazar spectrum is known with high enough precision to accurately derive one quantity from the other. In this paper we use the most recent data on the EBL to construct twelve differen…
With the arrival of powerful, ground-based gamma-ray detectors, we can now begin to seriously probe, via simultaneous X-ray/TeV observations, the origin of the gamma-ray emission in the blazars Mrk 421 and 501. If the synchrotron-Compton emission model turns out to work, then we know that the same electrons are responsible for both the X-ray and the gamma-ray emission of these objects. In this case, we show that we can use their observed X-ray spectra to robustly estimate their intrinsic gamma-ray spectra. Among blazars, Mrk 421/501 are particularly well-suited for this task because the Compto…
We present the discovery of >350 GeV gamma-ray emission from the BL Lacertae object 1ES 2344+514 with the Whipple Observatory 10m gamma-ray telescope. This is the third BL Lac object detected at gamma-ray energies above 300 Gev, the other two being Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Mrk501. These three active galactic nuclei are all X-ray selected and have the lowest known redshifts of any BL Lac objects currently identified. The evidence for emission derives primarily from an apparent flare on December 20, 1995 when a 6 sigma excess was detected with a flux approximately 63% of the very high energy …
We report here observations of the active galactic nucleus Mrk 501, at energies above 250 GeV carried out with the CAT atmospheric imaging telescope from March 1997 to Autumn 1998. This source was in a high state of activity at several different wavelengths in 1997, and the observed flux at TeV energies has been seen to change by a factor of ~ 20 from from 1995 and 1996 fluxes. CAT observations also indicate a curved spectrum at TeV energies, and a correlation between the gamma-ray intensity and the spectral hardness. The temporal variability and the TeV spectral properties are examined.
The new analysis variable xi, shown to be powerful on the data taken with the final configuration of CELESTE, has been applied to data taken with previous detector configurations. First, the analysis is validated on Crab observations, and then the cuts for the blazar Mrk 501 are optimized using Mrk 421 data since the sources have similar declinations. Data from Mrk 501 was recorded in 2000 and 2001. The old analysis gave a 2.5 sigma excess. We obtain an excess of 2.9 sigma during this time and of 4.9 sigma during May and June 2000 that we interpret as a gamma-ray signal from Mrk 501, for which…
Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has become an active astrophysical discipline with four confirmed sources of TeV gamma rays, two plerionic supernova remnants (SNRs) and two BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). An additional nine objects (one plerion, three shell-type SNRs, one X-ray binary, and four BL Lacs) have been detected but have not been confirmed by independent detections. None of the galactic sources require the presence of hadronic cosmic rays, so definitive evidence of their origin remains elusive. Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 are weak EGRET sources but they exhibit extremely variable TeV emission wit…
STACEE is a ground based gamma-ray observatory that uses a heliostat array, built for solar energy research, to detect atmospheric Cherenkov radiation from gamma-ray initiated extensive air showers. During the first half of 2001, a prototype detector, STACEE-48, was used to detect the blazar Markarian 421, which was in an extremely active state. Observations from March to May of 2001 yielded an integral flux of (8.0+/-0.7_{stat}+/-1.5_{sys})x 10^-10 1/cm^2/s at energies above 140+/-20 GeV, and provide some evidence of correlated trends on time scales of a week or more in the GeV and X-ray band…
An observation of Mrk 478 using the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer is presented. The source exhibited 30-40% flux variations on timescales of order 10000 s together with a slow decline in the spectral softness over the full 80 ks observation. The 0.15--3.0 keV spectrum is well fitted by a single power law with photon index of Gamma = 2.91 +/- 0.03. Combined with high energy data from BeppoSAX, the spectrum from 0.15 to 10 keV is well fit as the sum of two power laws with Gamma = 3.03 +/- 0.04, which dominates below 2 keV and 1.4 +/- 0.2, which dominates above 2 keV (quoti…
We have measured the gamma-ray fluxes of the blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in the energy range between 50 and 350 GeV (1.2 to 8.3 x 10^25 Hz). The detector, called CELESTE, used first 40, then 53 heliostats of the former solar facility "Themis" in the French Pyrenees to collect Cherenkov light generated in atmospheric particle cascades. The signal from Mrk 421 is often strong. We compare its flux with previously published multi-wavelength studies and infer that we are straddling the high energy peak of the spectral energy distribution. The signal from Mrk 501 in 2000 was weak (3.4 sigma). We obt…
We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Evidence of correlated variability is seen in very high energy (VHE, E > 350 GeV) gamma-ray observations taken with the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope, data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, and quicklook results from the All-Sky Monitor of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer while the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope did not detect Mrk 501. Short term optical correlations are not conclusive but …
We present the results of a multiwavelength campaign for Mrk 501 performed in March 1996 with ASCA, EGRET, Whipple, and optical telescopes. In the X-ray band, a spectral break was observed around 2 keV. We report here for the first time the detection of high-energy gamma-ray flux from Mrk 501 with EGRET with 3.5 sigma significance (E>100 MeV). Higher flux was also observed in April/May 1996, with 4.0 sigma significance for E>100 MeV, and 5.2 sigma significance for E>500 MeV. The gamma-ray spectrum was measured to be flatter than most of the gamma-ray blazars. We find that the multiband spectru…
In 1997, the BL Lac Object Mrk 501 entered a very active phase and was the brightest source in the sky at TeV energies, showing strong and frequent flaring. Using the data obtained with a high density air shower array that has been operating successfully at Yangbajing in Tibet since 1996, we searched for gamma-ray signals from this source during the period from February through August in 1997. Our observation detected multi-TeV $γ$-ray signals at the 3.7-Sigma level during this period. The most rapid increase of the excess counts was observed between April 7 and June 16 and the statistical sig…
We present XMM-Newton observations of Mrk 359, the first Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy discovered. Even among NLS1s, Mrk 359 is an extreme case with extraordinarily narrow optical emission lines. The XMM-Newton data show that Mrk 359 has a significant soft X-ray excess which displays only weak absorption and emission features. The (2-10) keV continuum, including reflection, is flatter than the typical NLS1, with Gamma approximately 1.84. A strong emission line of equivalent width approximately 200 eV is also observed, centred near 6.4 keV. We fit this emission with two line components of approx…
We discuss the problem of the absorption of very high-energy gamma-rays by pair production interactions with extragalactic photons which originate from stellar emission in the near IR-UV and reradiation of starlight in the mid- and far-IR. The absorption of gamma-rays above 1 TeV is dominated by interactions with infrared photons. We make a new determination of the optical depth of the universe to multi-TeV photons as a function of energy and redshift and use the results to compare with recent spectral data of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501, sources that have been observed in the flaring state up to apx.…
Mrk 501 has been in a state of very high flux in X-rays and VHE gamma-rays during 1997. In July 1997 near its hitherto maximum X-ray brightness intense multifrequency observations of Mrk 501 have been performed at radio, near infrared, optical, X-ray, and VHE gamma-ray frequencies. Here we report on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations carried out in 1997 between July 11 and July 16. The X-ray spectrum has been well detected up to 100 keV and is best described by a broken power law with spectral indices alpha1=0.70 and alpha2=0.94 below and above the break energy 5.8 keV. The X-ray …
We present model calculations reproducing broadband spectra of $γ$-ray blazars by a relativistic leptonic jet, combining the EIC and the SSC model. To this end, the evolution of the particle distribution functions inside a relativistic pair jet and of the resulting photon spectra is investigated. Inverse-Compton scattering of both external (EIC) as well as synchrotron photons (SSC) is treated using the full Klein-Nishina cross-section and the full angle-dependence of the external photon source. We present model fits to the broadband spectra of Mrk~421 and 3C279 and the X-ray and $γ$-ray spectr…
The results of our observational campaigns on the two extragalactic sources Mkn 501 and Mkn 421, carried out with the Imaging Element of the TACTIC array, during March-May, 1998 and April-May, 1999, are presented. The results indicate that the two BL Lac objects (Mkn 501 and Mkn 421) were in a `low' gamma-ray emission state during both epochs of our observations.
Using air showers induced by TeV gamma-rays from Mrk 501, the radial distribution of Cherenkov light is investigated. The shower geometry is reconstructed from the stereoscopic shower images obtained with the telescopes of the HEGRA IACT system. We observe a change in the shape of the light pool with shower energy, and with zenith angle. Data are well reproduced by Monte-Carlo air shower simulations.
The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed at energies above 0.10 TeV with the MAGIC telescope from May through July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument enabled the determination of the flux and spectrum of the source on a night-by-night basis. Throughout our observational campaign, the flux from Mrk 501 was found to vary by an order of magnitude. Intra-night flux variability with flux-doubling times down to 2 minutes was observed during the two most active nights, namely June 30 and July 9. These are the fastest flux variations ever observed in Mrk 501. The ~20-minute long flare…
Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) was the first blazar detected at gamma-ray energies above 300 GeV, and it remains one of only twelve TeV blazars detected to date. TeV gamma-ray measurements of its flaring activity and spectral variability have placed constraints on models of the high-energy emission from blazars. However, observations between 50 and 300 GeV are rare, and the high-energy peak of the spectral energy distribution (SED), predicted to be in this range, has never been directly detected. We present a detection of Mrk 421 above 100 GeV as made by the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect E…
Since the first TeV blazar Markarian (Mrk) 421 was detected in 1992, the number of established TeV gamma-ray emitting BL Lac objects has grown to 6, with redshifts ranging from 0.031 (Mrk 421) to 0.129 (H 1426+428). The intensive study of these sources has had a major impact on our understanding of the blazar phenomenon. The most notable observational results have been extremely fast large amplitude flux and spectral variability on hour time scales, and a pronounced X-ray - TeV gamma-ray flux correlation. In this paper we discuss recent observational results and report on progress in their the…
In this paper, I will take a synoptic approach to determining the intergalactic infrared radiation field (IIRF). This approach draws on both the multi-TeV gamma-ray observations and the infrared background observations and relates them via the semi-empirical modelling method of Malkan and Stecker. I discuss the evidence for an intergalactic infrared background obtained by an analysis of the HEGRA observations of the high energy gamma-ray spectrum of Mrk 501 and from constraints from Mrk 421 deduced from the Whipple air Cherenkov telescope results. I will show that this evidence is in accord wi…
Data taken with the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) air shower array on La Palma is used to search for an excess of TeV $γ$-rays from nearby AGN. We report on the detection of two blazars (Mrk 421 and Mrk 501) with the two prototype Cherenkov telescopes, and an analysis based on data taken with the scintillator and air Cherenkov array. Using the source stacking method we find preliminary evidence for 50 TeV $γ$-rays from the superposition of nearby blazars.
The emission mechanisms of the blazar 3C 279 are studied by solving the kinetic equations of electrons and photons in a relativistically moving blob. The gamma-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) is fitted by inverse Compton scattering of external photons. The bulk Lorentz factor of the emitting blob is found to be 25, and the magnetic field is found to be 0.3 G. GeV gamma-rays are well explained by inefficiently cooled electrons because of the Klein-Nishina effects. The electron spectrum is not a broken power law with a steeper spectrum above a break energy, which is often used to fit the …
The HEGRA system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provides for specially selected classes of events an angular resolution of better than 3'. By comparing the measured angular distribution of TeV gamma rays from the Crab Nebula with the distribution expected on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations, and with measurements of gamma rays from the point source Mrk 501, we conclude that the rms size of the VHE gamma-ray emission region in the Crab Nebula is less than 1.5'.
Astrophysical models for the high-energy emission of blazars are reviewed. Blazars ejecting relativistic radio jets at small angles to the line-of-sight are the only type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) discovered above 100 MeV. The gamma-rays apparently originate in the jets which explains the absence of gamma-ray pair creation attenuation. The bulk Lorentz factor of the radio jets is much smaller than the Lorentz factors of the emitting particles requiring in situ particle acceleration such as Fermi acceleration at shocks. The mounting evidence for a correlation between the optical and gamma…
We present a study of the X-ray variability properties and spectral shapes of five active galaxies all of which show extreme or enigmatic X-ray properties. We focus on QSO 0117-2837, RXJ0134.3-4258, and NGC 4051, and briefly comment on Mrk 1298 and 4C +74.26. The individual objects were originally partly selected as candidates to host warm absorbers on the basis of (i) characteristic X-ray absorption features (NGC 4051, Mrk 1298, 4C +74.26), (ii) extreme X-ray spectral steepness (QSO 0117-2837; this object is found to be located in the `zone of avoidance' when plotted in the Gamma_x - FWHM_Hbe…
We conducted a multi-frequency campaign for the TeV blazar Mrk~421 in 1998 April. The campaign started from a pronounced high amplitude flare recorded by SAX and Whipple; ASCA observation started three days later. In the X-ray data, we detected multiple flares, occuring on time scales of about one day. ASCA data clearly reveal spectral variability. The comparison of the data from ASCA, EUVE and RXTE indicates that the variability amplitudes in the low energy synchrotron component are larger at higher photon energies. In TeV Gamma-rays, large intra-day variations -- which were correlated with t…
The evolution of the particle distribution functions inside a relativistic jet containing an e^-e^+ pair plasma and of the resulting $γ$-ray and X-ray spectra is investigated. The first phase of this evolution is governed by heavy radiative energy losses. For this phase, approximative expressions for the energy-loss rates due to inverse-Compton scattering, using the full Klein-Nishina cross section, are given as one-dimensional integrals for both cooling by inverse-Compton scattering of synchrotron photons (SSC) and of accretion disk photons (EIC). We calculate instantaneous and time-integrate…
Photons with very high energy up to TeV (VHE) emitted from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide some invaluable information of the origin of $\gam$-ray emission. Although 66 blazars have been detected by {\it EGRET}, only three low redshift X-ray selected BL Lacs (Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 1ES 2344+514) are conclusive TeV emitters (PKS 2155-304 is a potential TeV emitter) since VHE photons may be absorbed by cosmological background infrared photons ({\it external} absorption). Based on the ``mirror'' effect of clouds in broad line region, we argue that there is an {\it intrinsic} mechanism for th…
We discuss the determination of the intergalactic pair-production absorption coefficient (Stecker & De Jager 1998) making use of an empirically based calculation of the IR background spectrum (Malkan & Stecker 1998) which agrees well with recent data and constraints on the IR background. While the Whipple observations of Mrk421 hint at extragalactic absorption, the new HEGRA observations of Mrk501 appear to strongly indicate such absorption. We discuss the determination of absorption at higher redshifts (Salamon & Stecker 1998). We also give a predicted spectrum, with absorption included, for …
The idea that the TeV air showers, thought to be produced by >10 TeV gamma rays from Mrk 501, can be mimicked by coherent bunches of sub-TeV photons is reexamined, focusing on fundamental considerations. In particular, it is shown that the minimum spot size of the beam of pulsed TeV photons arriving at Earth is on the order of a few kilometers, unless a lens with certain characteristics is placed between the TeV laser and Earth. The viability of the laser production mechanism proposed by Harwit et al. (2000) is also reassessed.
We discuss the possibility of explaining the extraordinary, correlated X-ray/TeV flares observed during April 1997 from Mrk 501, by synchrotron-pair cascades injected by synchrotron radiation from ultra-high energy protons and muons. Evaluating the jet conditions required to explain the observed features of the flares, the allowed region for this model in the parameter space of jet magnetic field and Doppler factor is identified, and compared with the parameter choices of other, both hadronic and leptonic models presented in the literature. The present model requires magnetic fields similar to…
In this paper we study factorial moments of simulated Cherenkov images of TACTIC type gamma ray telescope for cosmic gamma rays and proton segregation. A comprative and supplemnetary studies between factorial moments and Hillas parameters using ANN is discussed.
The blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) was observed above 100 GeV with the MAGIC Telescope during May, June and July 2005. The high sensitivity of the instrument made possible the detection of the source with high significance in each of the observing nights. During this observational campaign, the emitted gamma-ray flux from Mkn 501 was found to vary by one order of magnitude, and showed a high correlation with spectral changes. Intra-night flux variability was also observed, with flux-doubling times of ~2 minutes. The data showed a clear evidence of a spectral peak (in the nuFnu representation) …
We consider, herein, a model for gamma-ray production in blazars in which a relativistic, highly-collimated electron-proton beam interacts with a dense, compact cloud as the jet propagates through the broad and perhaps narrow line regions (BLR and NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). During the propagation of the beam through the cloud, the process of excitation of plasma waves becomes an important energy loss mechanism, especially for mildly relativistic proton beams. We compute the expected spectra of gamma-rays from the decay of neutral pions produced in hadronic collisions of the beam wit…
Historical TeV gamma-ray flares from Markarian 501 was observed using Utah Seven Telescope Array (7TA) from the end of March to the end of July of 1997. The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer All Sky Monitor (RXTE ASM) has been observing X rays from Mrk 501 since Jan. 5, 1996. We find evidence for periodicities of $23.9^{+2.3}_{-2.0}$ days and $23.9^{+1.6}_{-2.9}$ days from TeV gamma-ray and X-ray light curves using 7TA and RXTE ASM. Their false-alarm probabilities are $8.2 \times 10^{-3}$ and $5.6 \times 10^{-5}$, respectively.
