We employ a simple effective model to study the chiral dynamics of two flavors of quarks at finite temperature and density. In particular, we determine the phase diagram in the plane of temperature and baryon chemical potential as a function of the pion mass. An interesting phase structure occurs which results in zero, one or two critical points depending on the value of the vacuum pion mass.
An improved quark mass density- dependent model with the non-linear scalar sigma field and the $ω$-meson field is presented. We show that the present model can describe saturation properties, the equation of state, the compressibility and the effective nuclear mass of nuclear matter under mean field approximation successfully. The comparison of the present model and the quark-meson coupling model is addressed.
The extended chiral sigma model with quark fields and elementary pion and sigma fields is used to describe static nucleon properties. The field equations have been solved in coherent pair approximation. Better results are obtained for nucleon properties in comparison with previous work and reasonably agree with data.
The quark sigma model describes the quarks interacting via exchange the pions and sigma meson fields. A new version of mesonic potential is suggested in the frame of some aspects of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The field equations have been solved in the mean-field approximation for the hedgehog baryon state. The obtained results are compared with previous works and other models. We conclude that the suggested mesonic potential successfully calculates nucleon properties.
By use of the resonating group method, the Delta K, Lambda K, and Sigma K states are further dynamically studied in the extended chiral SU(3) quark model based on our previous work. Similar to the results given by the original chiral SU(3) quark model, the calculated results here still show that the interactions of Delta K with isospin I=1 and Sigma K with isospin I=1/2 are attractive, which can consequently lead to Delta K and Sigma K quasibound states. When the channel coupling of Lambda K and Sigma K is considered, the calculated phase shifts show a sharp resonance between the thresholds of…
There has been a discrepancy between values of the pion-nucleon sigma term extracted by two different methods for many years. Analysis of recent high precision pion-nucleon data has widened the gap between the two determinations. It is argued that the two extractions correspond to different quantities and that the difference between them can be understood and calculated.
Using the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction recently developed by the Kyoto-Niigata group, we calculate NN, Lambda N and Sigma N G-matrices in ordinary nuclear matter. This is the first attempt to discuss the Lambda and Sigma single-particle potentials in nuclear medium, based on the realistic quark-model potential. The Lambda potential has the depth of more than 40 MeV, which is more attractive than the value expected from the experimental data of Lambda-hypernuclei. The Sigma potential turns out to be repulsive, the origin of which is traced back to the strong Pauli repulsion in the …
We calculate Lambda alpha, Sigma alpha and Xi alpha potentials from the nuclear-matter G-matrices of the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction. The alpha-cluster wave function is assumed to be a simple harmonic-oscillator shell-model wave function. A new method is proposed to derive the direct and knock-on terms of the interaction Born kernel from the hyperon-nucleon G-matrices, with explicit treatments of the nonlocality and the center-of-mass motion between the hyperon and alpha. We find that the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interactions, FSS and fss2, yield a reasonable bound-state ene…
We evaluate the nucleon sigma term and in-medium quark condensate in the modified quark-meson coupling model which features a density-dependent bag constant. We obtain a nucleon sigma term consistent with its empirical value, which requires a significant reduction of the bag constant in the nuclear medium similar to those found in the previous works. The resulting in-medium quark condensate at low densities agrees well with the model independent linear order result. At higher densities, the magnitude of the in-medium quark condensate tends to increase, indicating no tendency toward chiral symm…
We apply the approximating chiral quark model. This chiral quark model is based on an effective Lagrangian which the interactions between quarks via sigma and pions mesons. The field equations have been solved in the mean field approximation for the hedgehog baryon state. Good results are obtained for nucleon properties in comparison with original model.
It is shown that the binding effect that is associated with the short range part of the Goldstone boson exchange interaction between constituent quarks provides a good description of the $πN$ $σ$-term.
We calculate the neutral pion mass in the presence of an external magnetic field of arbitrary strength in the framework of the linear sigma model coupled to quarks at zero temperature. We find nonmonotonic behavior of the pion mass as a function of magnetic field. We are also able to reproduce existing results for the weak-field approximation.
We use the linear sigma model coupled to quarks to compute the effective potential beyond the mean field approximation, including the contribution of the ring diagrams at finite temperature and baryon density. We determine the model couplings and use them to study the phase diagram in the baryon chemical potential-temperature plane and to locate the Critical End Point.
The in-medium chiral condensate is studied with a new approach which has the advantage of no need for extra assumptions on the current mass derivatives of model parameters. It is shown that the pion-nucleon sigma term is 9/2 times the average current mass of light quarks, if quark confinement is linear. Considering both perturbative and non-perturbative interactions, the chiral condensate decreases monotonously with increasing densities, approaching to zero at about 4 fm^{-3}.
We take into account the sigma meson cloud effect in the meson cloud model to calculate the distributions of light flavor sea quarks in the proton. Our calculation gives a better description of the data for $\bar{d}(x)/\bar{u}(x)$. We also provide a picture that the probability of finding a physical proton in a Fock state $|Nω> $ is reasonable small with a smaller cutoff $Λ_ω$.
We use a modified SU(2) chiral sigma model to study nuclear matter component and simple bag model for quark matter constituting a neutron star. We also study the phase transition of nuclear matter to quark matter with the mixed phase characterized by two conserved charges in the interior of highly dense neutron stars. Stable solutions of Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations representing hybrid stars are obtained with a maximum mass of 1.67$M_{\odot}$ and radius around 8.9 km.
We investigate the nonequilibrium evolution of the sigma field coupled to a fluid dynamic expansion of a hot fireball to model the chiral phase transition in heavy-ion collisions. The dissipative processes and fluctuations are allowed under the assumption that the total energy of the coupled system is conserved. We use the linear sigma model with constituent quarks to investigate the effects of the chiral phase transition on the equilibration and excitation of the sigma modes. The quark fluid acts as a heat bath in local thermal equilibrium and the sigma field evolves according to a semiclassi…
The S-wave Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar states with isospin I=1/2 and spin S=1/2 are dynamically investigated within the framework of a chiral constituent quark model by solving a resonating group method (RGM) equation. The results show that the interaction between Sigma_c and Dbar is attractive, which consequently results in a Sigma_c Dbar bound state with the binding energy of about 5-42 MeV, unlike the case of Lambda_c Dbar state, which has a repulsive interaction and thus is unbound. The channel coupling effect of Sigma_c Dbar and Lambda_c Dbar is found to be negligible due to the fact t…
We use a modified SU(2) chiral sigma model to study nuclear matter at high density using mean field approach. We also study the phase transition of nuclear matter to quark matter in the interior of highly dense neutron stars. Stable solutions of Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations representing hybrid stars are obtained with a maximum mass of 1.69 $M_{\odot}$, radii around 9.3 kms and a quark matter core constituting nearly 55-85 % of the star radii.
We derive the equation of state of nuclear matter including vacuum polarization effects arising from the nucleons and the sigma mesons in the quark-meson coupling model which incorporates explicitly quark degrees of freedom with quark coupled to the scalar and vector mesons. This leads to a softer equation of state for nuclear matter giving a lower value of incompressibility than would be reached without quantum effects. The {\it in-medium} nucleon and sigma meson masses are also calculated in a self-consistent manner.
We give some estimates for the light-quark mass dependence of the pole position of the sigma ($f_{0}(500)$) resonance in the complex energy plane, with the help of a chiral Lagrangian for the resonance field and some input from hadronic models constrained by Chiral Perturbation Theory and elastic unitarity. We also speculate on the fate of the sigma resonance when the quark masses become unphysically large.
We study the bound nucleon sigma term and the quark condensate in nuclear matter. In the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model the nuclear correction to the sigma term is small and negative, i.e., it decelerates the decrease of the quark condensate in nuclear matter. However, the quark condensate in nuclear matter is controlled primarily by the scalar-isoscalar $σ$ field. Compared to the leading term, it moderates the decrease more than that of the nuclear sigma term alone at densities around and larger than the normal nuclear matter density.
The phase diagram at finite temperature and density is investigated in the framework of the Polyakov linear sigma model (PLSM) with three light quark flavors in the mean field approximation. It is found that in the PLSM, the three phase transitions, i.e, the chiral restoration of $u,d$ quarks, the chiral restoration of $s$ quark, and the deconfinement phase transition are independent. There exists two-flavor quarkyonic phase at low density and three-flavor quarkyonic phase at high density. The critical end point (CEP) which separating the crossover from the first-order line in the PLSM model i…
We study the thermodynamics of the linear sigma model with constituent quarks beyond the mean-field approximation. By integrating out the quark degrees of freedom we derive an effective action for the meson fields which is then linearized around the ground state including field fluctuations. We propose a new method for performing exact averaging of complicated functions over the meson field fluctuations. Both thermal and zero-point fluctuations are considered. The chiral condensate and the effective meson masses are determined self-consistently in a rigorous thermodynamic framework. At zero ch…
A calculation of the current-quark mass dependence of hadron masses can help in using observational data to place constraints on the variation of nature's fundamental parameters. A hadron's sigma-term is a measure of this dependence. The connection between a hadron's sigma-term and the Feynman-Hellmann theorem is illustrated with an explicit calculation for the pion using a rainbow-ladder truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations: in the vicinity of the chiral limit sigma_pi = m_pi/2. This truncation also provides a decent estimate of sigma_rho because the two dominant self-energy correction…
We present a dynamic model based on the linear sigma model with constituent quarks that allows for studying the explicit propagation of fluctuations at a chiral critical point and a first-order phase transition. The coupled dynamics of the sigma field and the quarks is derived selfconsistently. Hereby, the sigma field evolves according to a semiclassical Langevin equation of motion, while the evolution of the quarks is described fluid dynamically in order to model the expansion of a hot fireball in heavy-ion collisions. Dissipative processes and fluctuations in the Langevin equation are allowe…
Chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature is studied in the framework of the O(4) linear sigma model and the U(N_f)_r x U(N_f)_l linear sigma model with N_f=2,3, and 4 quark flavors. We investigate the temperature dependence of the masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons, and the non-strange, strange, and charm condensates within the Hartree approximation as derived from the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism. We find that the masses of the non-strange and strange mesons at nonzero temperature depend sensitively on the particular symmetry of the model and the number of light qua…
Using the resonating group method (RGM), we dynamically study the baryon-meson interactions in chiral quark model. Some interesting results are obtained: (1) The Sigma K state has an attractive interaction, which consequently results in a Sigma K quasibound state. When the channel coupling of Sigma K and Lambda K is considered, a sharp resonance appears between the thresholds of these two channels. (2) The interaction of Delta K state with isospin I=1 is attractive, which can make for a Delta K quasibound state. (3) When the coupling to the Lambda K* channel is considered, the N phi is found t…
We calculate the variation of the chiral condensate in medium with respect to the quark chemical potential and evaluate the pion-nucleon sigma term via the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. The variation of chiral condensate in medium are obtained by solving the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation for quark propagator at finite chemical potential, with different models for the quark-gluon vertex and gluon propagator. We obtain the value of the sigma term $σ_{πN}$ = 62(1)(2) MeV, where the first represents the systematic error due to our different model for the quark-gluon vertex and gluon propagator an…
We analyze the sigma meson mass and width together with the pion-pion scattering parameters in the context of non-local chiral quark models with wave-function renormalization (WFR). We consider both non-local interactions based on the frequently used exponential form factor, and on fits to the mass and renormalization functions obtained in lattice calculations. In the case of the sigma properties we obtain results which are less dependent on the parameterization than in the standard local NJL model, and which are in reasonable agreement with the recently reported empirical values. We also show…
The pseudo scalar form factor, which represents the pseudo scalar quark density distribution due to finite quark masses on the nucleon, is shown to manifest itself with the induced pseudo scalar form factor in the $L_0^+$ amplitude for the charged pion electro-production. Both form factors show their own peculiar momentum dependence. Under the approximation on which the Goldberg-Treimann relation holds, a sum of both form factors' contributions accounts for the t-channel contribution in the charged pion electro-production near threshold.
The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which has been successfully used to describe the properties of both infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei, is applied to a systematic study of $Λ, Σ$ and $Ξ$ hypernuclei. Assumptions made in the present study are, (i) the (self-consistent) exchanged scalar, and vector, mesons couple only to the u and d quarks, and (ii) an SU(6) valence quark model for the bound nucleons and hyperon. The model automatically leads to a very weak spin-orbit interaction for the $Λ$ in a hypernucleus. Effects of the Pauli blocking at the quark level, particularly in the ope…
We use the linear sigma model with quarks to study the QCD phase diagram from the point of view of chiral symmetry restoration. We compute the leading order effective potential for high and low temperatures and finite quark chemical potential, up to the contribution of the ring diagrams to account for the plasma screening effects. We fix the values of the model couplings using physical values for the input parameters such as the vacuum pion and sigma masses, the critical temperature at vanishing quark chemical potential and the conjectured end point value of the baryon chemical potential of th…
A preliminary investigation of the anti-K N interaction is performed within a chiral constituent quark model by solving the resonating group method (RGM) equation. The model parameters are taken from our previous work, which gave a satisfactory description of the S-, P-, D-, F-wave KN scattering phase shifts. The channel-coupling between anti-K N, pi Lambda and pi Sigma is considered, and the scattering phase shifts as well as the bound-state problem of anti-K N are dynamically studied. The results show that the S-wave anti-K N interaction in the isospin I=0 channel is attractive, and in the e…
We investigate the screening masses of neutral pions and sigma mesons in hot and magnetized quark matter in the framework of a two-flavor lattice-improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with a magnetic field dependent coupling constant, which is determined by utilizing the results from lattice QCD simulations. Since such model can well reproduce inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC), by comparing with the standard NJL model, we systemically analyze the impacts of IMC on the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the longitudinal and transverse screening masses of the chiral partners, i.e. π^…
Using the SU(3)c lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind fermion at the quenched level, we study the quark-gluon mixed condensate g<\bar{q} sigma G q>, which is another chiral order parameter. For each current quark mass of m_q=21, 36, 52 MeV, we generate 100 gauge configurations in the 16^4 lattice with β= 6.0, and perform the measurement of the mixed condensate at 16 points in each gauge configuration. Using the 1600 data for each m_q, we find the ratio between the mixed condensate and the quark condensate, m_0^2 = g<\bar{q} sigma G q>/ <\bar{q}q> \simeq 2.5 GeV^2 at the lattice scale in the chi…
We use the linear sigma model with quarks to find the magnetic field-induced modifications to the neutral pion mass at one-loop level. The magnetic field effects are introduced by using charged particle propagators in the presence of a magnetic background in the strong field regime. We show that when accounting for the effects of the magnetic field on the model couplings, the vacuum sigma field and the neutral pion self-energy, the neutral pion mass decreases monotonically as a function of the field strength. We find an excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent lattice QCD c…
The long-range $ΛN-ΣN$ interaction is modeled by a configuration space meson-exchange potential matrix coupling to channels with $Δ$ and $Σ(1385)$ isobars. An inner boundary condition, based on $R$-matrix theory, replaces form factors for short-range effects and includes the effects of free quark configurations. An excellent fit is obtained to the available data, with only the energy-independent boundary conditions as free parameters. The effect of isobar thresholds is shown to be substantial in several partial waves and is crucial to the understanding of the higher energy $ΛN$ elastic scatter…
We study the quark-gluon mixed condensate g<\bar{q} sigma G q>, which is another chiral order parameter, using the SU(3)c lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind(KS) fermion at the quenched level. We generate 100 gauge configurations on the 16^4 lattice with β= 6.0, and measure the mixed condensate at 16 points in each gauge configuration for each current-quark mass of m_q=21, 36, 52 MeV. From the 1600 data for each m_q, we find the ratio between the mixed condensate and the quark condensate, m_0^2 = g<\bar{q} sigma G q> / <\bar{q}q> \simeq 2.5 GeV^2 at the lattice scale of 1/a \simeq 2 GeV in the…
We reexamine the spin-orbit splitting of 9 Lambda Be excited states in terms of the SU_6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction. The previous folding procedure to generate the Lambda alpha spin-orbit potential from the quark-model Lambda N LS interaction kernel predicted three to five times larger values for Delta E_{ell s}=E_x(3/2^+)-E_x(5/2^+) in the model FSS and fss2. This time, we calculate Lambda alpha LS Born kernel, starting from the LS components of the nuclear-matter G-matrix for the Lambda hyperon. This framework makes it possible to take full account of an important P-wave Lambda N …
We present a generalized linear sigma model that includes both scalar and pseudoscalar glueballs in addition to a quark-antiquark as well as a four-quark chiral nonet. Utilizing the axial and trace anomalies of QCD (at the effective mesonic level), we aim to develope the most general structure of the Lagrangian which can be used to study the interaction of quarkonia with glueballs. We then study the effect of scalar glueball on the vacuum of the model by considering a decoupling limit in which the glueball fields are decoupled from quarkonia. This determines the properties of the pure scalar g…
We compute the neutral pion mass dependence on a magnetic field in the weak field approximation at one-loop order. The calculation is carried out within the linear sigma model coupled to quarks and using Schwinger's proper-time representation for the charged particle propagators. We find that the neutral pion mass decreases with the field strength provided the boson self-coupling magnetic field corrections are also included. The calculation should be regarded as the setting of the trend for the neutral pion mass as the magnetic field is turned on.
We study the quark-gluon mixed condensate g<\bar{q} sigma G q>, which is another chiral order parameter, in SU(3)c lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind fermion at the quenched level. Using 100 gauge configurations on the 16^4 lattice with β= 6.0, we measure the mixed condensate at 16 points in each gauge configuration for each current-quark mass of m_q=21, 36, 52 MeV. From the 1600 data for each m_q, we find the ratio between the mixed condensate and the quark condensate, m_0^2 = g<\bar{q} sigma G q> / <\bar{q}q> \simeq 2.5 GeV^2 at the lattice scale of 1/a \simeq 2 GeV in the chiral limit. The…
We compute the critical temperature for the chiral transition in the background of a magnetic field in the linear sigma model, including the quark contribution and the thermo-magnetic effects induced on the coupling constants at one loop level. We show that the critical temperature decreases as a function of the field strength. The effect of fermions on the critical temperature is small and the main effect on this observable comes from the charged pions. The findings support the idea that the anticatalysis phenomenon receives a contribution due only to quiral symmetry effects independent of th…
We study the mass shifts of the charmonium ($\bar{c}c$) states ($J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, $ψ(1D)$, $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$) as well as the bottomonium ($\bar{b}b$) states ($Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, $Υ_2(1D)$, $χ_{b0}$, $χ_{b1}$ and $χ_{b2}$) in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These are investigated using a generalized linear sigma model. The broken scale invariance of QCD is incorporated in the chiral $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ Lagrangian through an effective potential involving logarithmic terms of a scalar (glueball) dilaton field $χ$. The mass shifts of the quarkonium states are obtained through the medi…
We perform a preliminary study of the 1/2+ and 3/2+ ground-state baryons containing a heavy quark in the framework of the chiral SU(3) quark model. By using the calculus of variations, masses of Lambda_Q, Sigma_Q, Xi_Q, Omega_Q, Sigma_Q^*, Xi_Q^* and Omega_Q^*, where Q means c or b quark, are calculated. With taking reasonable model parameters, the numerical results of established heavy baryons are generally in agreement with the available experimental data, except that those of Xi_Q are somewhat heavier. For Omega_b with undetermined experimental mass and nobserved Xi_b^*, Omega_b^*, reasonab…
The linear sigma model with quarks at very low temperatures provides an effective description for the thermodynamics of the strong interaction in cold and dense matter, being especially useful at densities found in compact stars and protoneutron star matter. Using the MSbar one-loop effective potential, we compute quantities that are relevant in the process of nucleation of droplets of quark matter in this scenario. In particular, we show that the model predicts a surface tension of Σ~ 5-15 MeV/fm^2, rendering nucleation of quark matter possible during the early post-bounce stage of core colla…
We estimate the valence quark contributions for the gamma* Y -> Lambda* (Y=Lambda, Sigma0) electromagnetic transition form factors. We focus particularly on the case Lambda*=Lambda(1670) as an analog reaction with gamma* N -> N(1535). The results are compared with those obtained from chiral unitary model, where the Lambda* resonance is dynamically generated and thus the electromagnetic structure comes directly from the meson cloud excitation of the baryon ground states. The form factors for the case Y=Sigma0 in particular, depend crucially on the two real phase (sign) combination, a phase betw…
The existence of quark matter inside the cores of heavy neutron stars is a possibility which can be probed with modern astrophysical observations. We use an (axial)vector meson extended quark-meson model to describe quark matter in the core of neutron stars. We discover that an additional parameter constraint is necessary in the quark model to ensure chiral restoration at high densities. By investigating hybrid star sequences with various parameter sets we show that low sigma meson masses are needed to fulfill the upper radius constraints, and that the maximum mass of stable hybrid stars is on…
We study the restoration of chiral symmetry in linear sigma models with two quark flavors. The models taken into consideration have a U(2)_L x U(2)_R and an O(4) internal symmetry. The physical mesons of these models are sigma, pion, eta and a_0 where the latter two are not present in the O(4) model. Including two-loop contributions through sunset graphs we calculate the temperature behavior of the order parameter and the masses for explicit chiral symmetry breaking and in the chiral limit. Decay threshold effects introduced by the sunset graphs alter the temperature dependence of the condensa…
We investigate pion and sigma meson correlations in hot quark matter within a modified NJL model. Special emphasis is on the transformation of mesonic bound states to resonances (Mott dissociation) when due to the partial chiral symmetry restoration with increasing temperature the threshold of quark-antiquark continuum states drops below the meson mass at the corresponding Mott temperature. The description is based on evaluating the polarization functions for quark-antiquark (meson) correlations as a function of the temperature and the results can be represented by introducing modulus and phas…
The isosinglet combination of the chiral-odd twist-3 distribution function $e^u(x)+e^d(x)$ of the nucleon has outstanding properties that its first moment is proportional to the well-known $πN$ sigma-term and that it contains a $δ$-function singularity at $x=0$. These two features are inseparably connected in that the above sum rule would be violated, if there is no such a singularity in $e^u(x)+e^d(x)$. Very recently, we found that the physical origin of this $δ$-function singularity can be traced back to the long-range quark-quark correlation of scalar type, which signals the spontaneous chi…
We investigate the chiral phase transition at nonzero temperature $T$ and baryon-chemical potential $μ_B$ within the framework of the linear sigma model and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. For small bare quark masses we find in both models a smooth crossover transition for nonzero $T$ and $μ_B=0$ and a first order transition for T=0 and nonzero $μ_B$. We calculate explicitly the first order phase transition line and spinodal lines in the $(T,μ_B)$ plane. As expected they all end in a critical point. We find that, in the linear sigma model, the sigma mass goes to zero at the critical point. This …
We construct strangelets, taking into account electrostatic effects, including Debye screening, and arbitrary surface tension sigma of the interface between vacuum and quark matter. We find that there is a critical surface tension sigma_crit below which large strangelets are unstable to fragmentation and below which quark star surfaces will fragment into a crystalline crust made of charged strangelets immersed in an electron gas. We derive a model-independent relationship between sigma_crit and two parameters that characterize any quark matter equation of state. For reasonable model equations …
We explore the viability of using solely spacelike information about a Schwinger function to extract properties of bound states. In a concrete example it is not possible to determine properties of states with masses \gsim 1.2 GeV. Modern Dyson-Schwinger equation methods supply a well-constrained tool that provide access to hadron masses and σ-terms. We report values of the latter for a range of hadrons. Of interest is analysis relating to a u,d scalar meson, which is compatible with a picture of the lightest 0^{++} as a bound state of a dressed-quark and -antiquark supplemented by a material p…
