Magnetic fields are believed to play a crucial role in the process of star formation. We compare high-angular resolution observations of the submillimeter polarized emission of NGC 1333 IRAS 4A, tracing the magnetic field around a low-mass protostar, with models of the collapse of magnetized molecular cloud cores. Assuming a uniform dust alignment efficiency, we computed the Stokes parameters and synthetic polarization maps from the model density and magnetic field distribution by integrations along the line-of-sight and convolution with the interferometric response. The synthetic maps are in good agreement with the data. The best-fitting models were obtained for a protostellar mass of 0.8 solar masses, of age 9e4 yr, formed in a cloud with an initial mass-to-flux ratio ~2 times the critical value. The magnetic field morphology in NGC 1333 IRAS 4A is consistent with the standard theoretical scenario for the formation of solar-type stars, where well-ordered, large-scale, rather than turbulent, magnetic fields control the evolution and collapse of the molecular cloud cores from which stars form.
We present arcsecond-scale mid-ir photometry (in the 10.5 micron N band and at 24.8 microns), and low resolution spectra in the N band (R~100) of a candidate high mass protostellar object (HMPO) in IRAS 18151-1208 and of two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129, IRS 1 and IRS 3. In addition we present high resolution mid-ir spectra (R~80000) of the two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129. These data are fitted with simple models to estimate the masses of gas and dust associated with the mid-ir emitting clumps, the column densities of overlying absorbing dust and gas, the luminosities of the HMPO …
Arcsecond-resolution spectral observations toward the protobinary system IRAS 16293-2422 at 344 and 354 GHz were conducted using the Submillimeter Array. Complex organic molecules such as CH3OH and HCOOCH3 were detected. Together with the rich organic inventory revealed, it clearly indicates the existence of two, rather than one, compact hot molecular cores (smaller than or equal to 400 AU in radius) associated with each of the protobinary components identified by their dust continuum emission in the inner star-forming core.
We present 86.8 GHz SiO J=2-1 observations of the molecular outflow from the protostellar source NGC 1333 IRAS 2A. Silicon monoxide is a sensitive tracer of shocks in molecular gas, and the emission clearly traces terminal bowshocks at the ends of the outflow lobes, as well as emission knots and a source coincident with the protostar. Our three-field mosaic from the BIMA interferometer covers the entire outflow length, including both lobes. The most prominent emission feature, the eastern bowshock, shows SiO at the leading edge, clearly displaced from the maximum seen in CO. This is in contras…
New AAT near-infrared and SEST 12CO J=2-1 observations are combined with existing ISO mid-infrared and ATCA cm radio continuum observations to examine the protostellar content of the Bok globule BHR 71. Together with observations of Herbig-Haro objects, these data show: (1) Two protostellar sources, IRS1 and IRS2, with a separation of ~17 arcsec (3400 AU) are located within BHR 71. (2) Each protostar is driving its own molecular outflow. The outflow from IRS1 is much larger in extent, is more massive, and dominates the CO emission. (3) Both protostars are associated with Herbig-Haro objects an…
This paper investigates small-scale structures of dense gas and dust around the low-mass protostellar binary NGC1333-IRAS2 using millimeter-wavelength aperture-synthesis observations from the OVRO and BIMA interferometers. The detected 3 mm continuum emission is consistent with models of the envelope around IRAS2A, based on previously reported submillimeter continuum images, down to the 3", or 500 AU, resolution of the interferometer data. Our data constrain the contribution of an unresolved point source to 22 mJy. Within the accuracy of the parameters describing the envelope model, the point …
We present radio continuum observations at 7 mm made using the Very Large Array towards three massive star forming regions thought to be in very early stages of evolution selected from the sample of Sridharan et al. (2002). Emission was detected towards all three sources (IRAS 18470-0044, IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912). We find that in all cases the 7 mm emission corresponds to thermal emission from ionized gas. The regions of ionized gas associated with IRAS 19217+1651 and IRAS 23151+5912 are hypercompact with diameters of 0.009 and 0.0006 pc, and emission measures of 7.0 x 10^8 and 2.3…
Context. The youngest protostars that power energetic outflows are surrounded by infalling and rotating envelopes that contain most of the mass of the system. Aims. To study the properties and kinematics of the protostellar envelope surrounding the embedded source IRAS 05173-0555 in L1634. Methods. We carried out VLA ammonia observations at 1.3 cm with the VLA in the D configuration to map the gas towards the core of L1634. Results. The NH3 emission towards IRAS 05173-0555 is resolved and shows two components clearly distinguishable morphologically: a cross-like structure, roughly elongated in…
We present observations of continuum and molecular lines towards the protostar candidates IRAS 21307+5049 and IRAS 22172+5549. Single-dish maps in the 12CO(2--1), C18O(2--1), HCO+(1--0) lines and sub-mm continuum are compared with interferometric maps in the 12CO(1--0) line and 3 mm continuum, and with mid- and near-infrared images. A plausible interpretation of our data based on the continuum maps and spectral energy distributions is that two components are present: a compact molecular core, responsible for the continuum emission at wavelengths longer than ~25 \mum, and a cluster of stars loc…
We report Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared NICMOS observations of a remarkable low-luminosity Class I (protostellar) source in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. IRAS 04325+2402 exhibits a complex bipolar scattered light nebula. The central continuum source is resolved and may be multiple, or may be crossed by a small dust lane. Complex arcs seen in scattered light surround the central source; the physical nature of these structures is not clear, but they may reflect perturbations from multiple stellar sources or from time-dependent mass ejection. A second, resolved continuum source is found at a…
We present bispectrum speckle interferometry of the massive protostellar object IRAS 23151+5912 in the near-infrared K' band. The reconstructed image shows the diffuse nebulosity north-east of two point-like sources in unprecedented detail. The comparison of our near-infrared image with mm continuum and CO molecular line maps shows that the brighter of the two point sources lies near the center of the mm peak, indicating that it is a high-mass protostar. The nebulosity coincides with the blue-shifted molecular outflow component. The most prominent feature in the nebulosity is a bow-shock-like …
We report high spatial resolution VLA observations of the low-mass star-forming region IRAS 16293-2422 using four molecular probes: ethyl cyanide (CH$_3$CH$_2$CN), methyl formate (CH$_3$OCHO), formic acid (HCOOH), and the ground vibrational state of silicon monoxide (SiO). Ethyl cyanide emiss ion has a spatial scale of $\sim20''$ and encompasses binary cores A and B as determined by continuum emission peaks. Surrounded by formic acid emission, methyl formate emission has a spatial scale of $\sim6''$and is confined to core B. SiO emission shows two velocity components with spatial scales less t…
We present the results of a multi-line and continuum study towards the source IRAS 23385+6053,performed with the IRAM-30m telescope, the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, the Very Large Array Interferometer and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The new results confirm our earlier findings, namely that IRAS 23385+6053 is a good candidate high-mass protostellar object, precursor of an ultracompact H$_{II}$ region. The source is roughly composed of two regions: a molecular core $\sim0.03\div0.04$ pc in size, with a temperature of $\sim40$ K and an H$_{2}$ volume density of the order of 10$^{7}$ cm…
While most sources above 10^5Lsun have already formed an Ultracompact HII region (UCHII), this is not necessarily the case for sources of lower luminosity. Characterizing sources in the transition phase, i.e., very luminous objects without any detectable free-free emission, is important for a general understanding of massive star formation. Therefore, we observed the luminous High-Mass Protostellar Object IRAS23151+5912 with the Submillimeter Array at 875mum in the submm continuum and spectral line emission at sub-arcsecond resolution. The 875mum submm continuum emission has been resolved into…
The NGC 1333 IRAS 4 region was observed in the 22 GHz H2O maser line with an angular resolution of about 0.08 arcseconds. Two groups of masers were detected, one near IRAS 4A and the other near BI. Among the eight maser spots detected near IRAS 4A, six spots are located close to A2, within 100 AU, and the maser velocities are also near the systemic velocity of the cloud core. These masers are probably related with the circumstellar disk. Since there is no maser spot detected around A1, the star forming process is relatively more active in A2 than in A1. Four maser spots were detected near IRAS…
High-resolution SiO observations of the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A star-forming region showed a highly collimated outflow with a substantial deflection. The deflection was suggested to be caused by the interactions of the outflow and a dense cloud core. To investigate the deflection process of protostellar outflows, we have carried out three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the collision of an outflow with a dense cloud. Assuming a power-law type density distribution of the obstructing cloud, the numerical experiments show that the deflection angle is mainly determined by the impact parameter and…
We present results of VLBI observations of the water masers associated with IRAS 4A and IRAS 4B in the NGC 1333 star-forming region taken in four epochs over a two month period. Both objects have been classified as extremely young sources and each source is known to be a multiple system. Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we detected 35 masers in Epoch I, 40 masers in Epoch II, 35 in Epoch III, and 24 in Epoch IV. Only one identified source in each system associates with these masers. These data are used to calculate proper motions for the masers and trace the jet outflows within 100 AU of IR…
A detailed radiative transfer analysis of the observed continuum and molecular line emission toward the deeply embedded young stellar object IRAS 16293-2422 is performed. The continuum modelling is used to constrain the temperature and density distributions in the envelope, enabling quantitative estimates of various molecular abundances. The molecular excitation analysis reveals that the emission from some molecular species is well reproduced assuming a constant fractional abundance throughout the envelope. The abundances and isotope ratios are generally close to typical values found in cold m…
In this article, we report high-resolution (~ 0.1" -- 0.3"), high-sensitivity (~ 50 -100 uJy beam-1) Very Large Array 0.7 and 1.3 cm observations of the young stellar system IRAS 16293-2422 in rho-Ophiuchus. In the 0.7 cm image, component A to the south-east of the system looks like its usual binary self. In the new 1.3 cm image, however, component A2 appears to have split into two sub-components located roughly symmetrically around the original position of A2. This change of morphology is likely the result of a recent bipolar ejection, one of the very first such events observed in a low-mass …
We present new infrared data from a survey for embedded protostellar jets in the Orion A cloud. This survey makes use of the S(1) v = 1-0 line of molecular hydrogen at lambda = 2.12 mum to search for infrared jets deep inside the cloud and thus hidden from view at optical wavelengths. We present data on the three flows associated with the Herbig-Haro objects HH 43/38 & HH 64, HH 65, and the L1641-N giant flow. HH 43, HH 38 and HH 64 are part of one H_2 flow extending over at least 1.4 pc. We identify a deeply embedded 1.3 mm and IRAS source (HH 43 MMS1 = IRAS 05355-0709C) as the likely driving…
Molecular outflows from young protostars are widely believed to be collimated by magnetic fields, but there has been little observational evidence to support this hypothesis. Using the new technique of millimetre-wavelength spectro-polarimetry, we demonstrate the existence of a magnetic field in the NGC2024-FIR5 outflow lobe. The 1.3mm J=2-1 transition of carbon monoxide (CO) is polarized at a level of approximately 1%, in a direction within 10-15 degrees of the outflow axis. This agrees with theoretical models where the magnetic field channels the outflowing gas, and shows that the process ca…
The NGC 1333 IRAS 4A protobinary was observed in the ammonia (2, 2) and (3, 3) lines and in the 1.3 cm continuum with a high resolution (about 1.0 arcsec). The ammonia maps show two compact sources, one for each protostar, and they are probably protostellar accretion disks. The disk associated with IRAS 4A2 is seen nearly edge-on and shows an indication of rotation. The A2 disk is brighter in the ammonia lines but dimmer in the dust continuum than its sibling disk, with the ammonia-to-dust flux ratios different by about an order of magnitude. This difference suggests that the twin disks have s…
We imaged the protostars of the nearby region NGC1333 IRAS 4 in the water maser line at 22.2 GHz by using the VLBA in phase referencing at milliarcsecond scale over four epochs spaced by one month to measure proper motions. We measure the absolute positions and proper motions of the H2O spots to investigate the kinematics of the region from where the jet is launched. Two protostars (A2 and B) have been detected in a highly variable H2O maser emission, with an active phase shorter than four weeks. A 70 AU chain of several maser spots, very well aligned, has been observed close to the B protosta…
We report the detection of complex molecules (HCOOCH_3, HCOOH and CH_3CN), signposts of a "hot core" like region, toward the low mass, Class 0 source NGC1333-IRAS4A. This is the second low mass protostar where such complex molecules have been searched for and reported, the other source being IRAS16293-2422. It is therefore likely that compact (few tens of AUs) regions of dense and warm gas, where the chemistry is dominated by the evaporation of grain mantles, and where complex molecules are found, are common in low mass Class 0 sources.Given that the chemical formation timescale is much shorte…
The IRAS source 03256+3055 in the NGC 1333 star forming region is associated with extended sub-millimeter emission of complex morphology, showing multiple clumps. One of these is found to coincide with the driving source of a bipolar jet of S-shaped morphology seen in the emission lines of H_alpha and [SII] as well as in the H2 emission lines in the K-band. Detailed images of the driving source at the wavelengths of H_alpha and [SII] and in the I, J, H, and K bands as well as a K-band spectrum and polarimetry are discussed. The near-infrared morphology is characterized by a combination of line…
We present SCUBA observations of the protomultiple system NGC1333/IRAS4 at 450um and 850um. The 850um map shows significant extended emission which is most probably a remnant of the initial cloud core. At 450um, the component 4A is seen to have an elongated shape suggestive of a disk. Also we confirm that in addition to the 4A and 4B system, there exists another component 4C, which appears to lie out of the plane of the system and of the extended emission. Deconvolution of the beam reveals a binary companion to IRAS4B. Simple considerations of binary dynamics suggest that this triple 4A-4BI-4B…
We used MIDI, the mid-infrared interferometric instrument of the VLTI, to observe the massive protostellar candidate IRS 9A, located at a distance of about 7 kpc at the periphery of the NGC 3603 star cluster. Our ongoing analysis shows that MIDI almost fully resolves the object on all observed baselines, yet below 9 $μ$m we detect a steep rise of the visibility. This feature is modelled as a combination of a compact hot component and a resolved warm envelope which lowers the correlated flux at longer wavelengths. The extended envelope can already be seen in both MIDI's acquisition images and i…
We report the results of a search for 22 GHz water maser emission in IRAS-bright galaxies, using the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. In particular, we present the details of four new maser detections (IC342, NGC2146, NGC3556, and Arp299) and follow-up interferometric studies. A comparison between water maser detection rates derived in the present study and those in previous similar surveys is also presented.
The NGC 1333 region was observed in the H2 1-0 S(1) line. The H2 images cover a 5' x 7' region around IRAS 4. Numerous H2 emission features were detected. The northeast-southwest bipolar outflow driven by IRAS 4A was studied by combining the H2 images with SiO maps published previously. The SiO-H2 outflows are continuous on the southwestern side but show a gap on the northeastern side. The southwestern outflow lobe curves smoothly, and the position angle increases with the distance from the driving source. The base and the outer tip of the northeastern outflow lobe are located at positions opp…
We report the result of an on-going survey for 22 GHz H2O maser emission towards infrared luminous galaxies. The observed galaxies were selected primarily from the IRAS bright galaxy sample. The survey has resulted in the detection of one new maser. The new maser was discovered towards the [U]LIRG/merger galaxy NGC6240, which contains a LINER nucleus. This is the first detection of an H2O maser towards this class of galaxy, they are traditionally associated with OH megamaser sources. The detected maser emission is highly redshifted (~ 260-300 km/s) with respect to the adopted systemic velocity…
The onset of gravitational collapse in cluster-forming clouds is still poorly known. Our goal is to use the Class 0 protostar IRAS 4A, which is undergoing collapse in the active molecular cloud NGC 1333, to set constraints on this process. In particular we want to measure the mass infall rate and investigate whether the collapse could have been triggered by a strong external perturbation. We analyze existing continuum observations to derive the density structure of the envelope, and use our new molecular line observations done with the IRAM 30m telescope to probe its velocity structure. We per…
Water vapor maser emission in the 6_{16}-5_{23} transition towards the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy NGC 4051 has been discovered during an ongoing single-dish extragalactic water maser survey. The Doppler-shifted maser components appear to bracket maser components lying near the systemic velocity of the galaxy symmetrically. The tentative result of a Very Large Array (VLA) snapshot observation is that the masers are confined within 0.1 arcsec (5 pc at a distance D = 9.7 Mpc) of the radio continuum peak seen at 8.4 GHz. The low luminosity of the maser (~2 Lsun) is not typical for masers …
We have made continuum and spectral line observations of several outflow sources in the Mon OB1 dark cloud (NGC 2264) using the Heinrich Hertz Telescope (HHT) and ARO 12m millimeter-wave telescope. This study explores the kinematics and outflow energetics of the young stellar systems observed and assesses the impact star formation is having on the surrounding cloud environment. Our data set incorporates 12CO(3-2), 13CO(3-2), and 12CO(1-0) observations of outflows associated with the sources IRAS 06382+1017 and IRAS 06381+1039, known as IRAS 25 and 27, respectively, in the northern cloud comple…
Millimeter wavelength observations are presented of NGC 1333 IRAS 4, a group of highly-embedded young stellar objects in Perseus, that reveal motions of infall, outflow, rotation, and turbulence in the dense gas around its two brightest continuum objects, 4A and 4B. These data have finest angular resolution of approximately 2" (0.0034 pc) and finest velocity resolution of 0.13 km/s. Infall motions are seen from inverse P-Cygni profiles observed in H2CO 3_12-2_11 toward both objects, but also in CS 3-2 and N2H+ 1-0 toward 4A, providing the least ambiguous evidence for such motions toward low-ma…
In the course of a comprehensive mm/submm survey of massive star-forming regions, the vicinities of a sample of 47 luminous IRAS sources were closely investigated with SCUBA and IRAM bolometers in order to search for massive protostellar candidates. A particularly interesting object has been found in the surroundings of the bright FIR source IRAS 07029-1215. Follow-up line observations show that the object is cold, that it has a massive envelope, and that it is associated with an energetic molecular outflow. No infrared point source has been detected at its position. Therefore, it is a very go…
We present the results from a survey of NGC 2244 from 3.6 to 24 micron with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The 24micron-8micron-3.6micron color composite image of the region shows that the central cavity surrounding the multiple O and B stars of NGC2244 contains a large amount of cool dust visible only at 24micron. Our survey gives a detailed look at disk survivability within the hot-star-dominated environment in this cavity. Using mid infrared two color diagrams ([3.6]-[4.5] vs [5.8]-[8.0]) we identified 337 class II and 25 class I objects out of 1084 objects detected in all four of these bands…
We present 850micron imaging polarimetry of two high-mass star forming regions - W48 and S152. Within these regions we have identified two candidate high-mass protostellar objects - W48W and S152SE. The submillimetre continuum emission from the candidate HMPOs is bright in comparison to the nearby HII regions. W48W is a cold dense source, with no radio or mid-infrared emission. S152SE has an IRAS source IRAS 22566+5828 in the Southwestern part of the region, which appears in the mid-infrared 8.28micron emission, but there is no radio emission. The 850micron data shows another core within the r…
This paper presents a large spectral line and continuum survey of 8 deeply embedded, low-mass protostellar cores using the Submillimeter Array. Each source was observed in high excitation lines of some of the most common molecular species, CO, HCO+, CS, SO, H2CO, CH3OH and SiO. Line emission from 11 species originating from warm and dense gas have been imaged at high angular resolution (1-3"; typically 200-600 AU) together with continuum emission at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) and 345 GHz (0.8 mm). Compact continuum emission is observed for all sources which likely originates in marginally optically thic…
We have mapped the water maser emission associated with the infrared centers IRS1 and IRS3 of the NGC 2071IR star forming region at four epochs over ~4 months with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We detected 269 maser features with ~1 km/sec linewidths and measured 30 proper motions. In each infrared center, the water maser emission appears to trace parts of a protostellar disk and collimated outflow. The disk components are ~9 and ~17 AU long, in IRS3 and IRS1 respectively, and ~2 AU wide. They are identified as disks by their compact size, elongation parallel to the direction of known I…
(Abridged) We have observed CS and C17O lines, and 1.2 mm cont. emission towards a sample of 130 high-mass protostellar candidates with DEC<-30 deg. This is the first step of the southern extension of a project started more than a decade ago aimed at the identification of massive protostellar candidates. We selected from the IRAS PSC 429 sources which potentially are compact molecular clouds. The sample is divided into two groups: the 298 sources with [25-12]>0.57 and [60-12]>1.30 we call 'High' sources, the remaining 131 we call 'Low' sources. In this paper, we check the association with dens…
The mid-infrared emission at the center of IRAS 21026+4104 is not that of a simple compact source, as one would expect from an isolated high mass protostellar object. Furthermore the central thermal infrared emission does not appear to be coming directly from a circumstellar disk as has been recently hypothesized from near-infrared observations. The mid-infrared structure is complex, but with the help of multiple wavelength information two plausible scenarios to explain the emission in the region are advanced. The first is that there is a tight cluster of young stellar objects here. The second…
We aim to study dust properties of massive star forming regions in the outer Galaxy, in a direction opposite to the Galactic center. We present observations of six outer Galaxy point sources IRAS 01045+6505, 01420+6401, 05271+3059, 05345+3556, 20222+3541 and 20406+4555, taken with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) at 450 and 850 micron. Single temperature greybody models are fitted to the Spectral Energy Distribution of the detected sub-mm cores to derive dust temperature, dust emissivity index and optical depth at 250 micron. The…
Context: The earliest phases of massive star formation are currently much debated. Aims. In an effort to make progress, we took a census of Class0-like protostellar dense cores in the NGC 3576 region, one of the nearest and most luminous embedded sites of high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. Methods: We used the P-ArTeMiS bolometer camera on the APEX telescope to produce the first 450-micron dust continuum map of the filamentary dense clump associated with NGC 3576. Results: Combining our 450-micron observations with existing data at other wavelengths, we have identified seven massive proto…
We present here an extensive analysis of the protostellar jet driven by IRAS 20126+4104, deriving the kinematical, dynamical, and physical conditions of the H2 gas along the flow. The jet has been investigated by means of near-IR H2 and [FeII] narrow-band imaging, high resolution spectroscopy of the 1-0S(1) line (2.12 um), NIR (0.9-2.5 um) low resolution spectroscopy, along with ISO-SWS and LWS spectra (from 2.4 to 200 um). The flow shows a complex morphology. In addition to the large-scale jet precession presented in previous studies, we detect a small-scale wiggling close to the source, that…
We report the detection of the 1_{10}-1_{11} ground state transition of ortho-H_2D^+ at 372.421 GHz in emission from the young stellar object NGC 1333 IRAS 4A. Detailed excitation models with a power-law temperature and density structure yield a beam-averaged H_2D^+ abundance of 3 x 10^{-12} with an uncertainty of a factor of two. The line was not detected toward W 33A, GL 2591, and NGC 2264 IRS, in the latter source at a level which is 3-8 times lower than previous observations. The H_2D^+ data provide direct evidence in support of low-temperature chemical models in which H_2D^+ is enhanced b…
