Hadronization in tau -> K K pi nu_tau decays is driven by both vector and axial-vector currents that we study, guided by the following principles: The 1/N_C expansion -worked out at leading order, considering only the contribution of the lightest spin one resonances-, approximate chiral symmetry at low energies and the appropriate asymptotic behaviour we demand to the associated form factors. All these features are implemented in the resonance theory. Most of its couplings are determined by imposing the short-distance requirements of vector and axial-vector spectral functions within QCD. We plan to improve our prediction of the hadronic spectra using recently available experimental data.
Theoretical description of inclusive tau lepton hadronic decay is performed in the framework of Dispersive approach to QCD. The significance of effects due to hadronization is demonstrated. The approach on hand is capable of describing experimental data on tau lepton decay in vector and axial-vector channels. The vicinity of values of QCD scale parameter obtained in both channels testifies to the self-consistency of developed approach.
It is shown that the nonperturbative effects due to hadronization play a crucial role in low-energy strong interaction processes. Specifically, such effects impose a stringent constraint on the infrared behavior of the Adler function and play an essential role in the theoretical analysis of inclusive tau lepton decay.
We present our study of the hadronization structure of both vector and axial-vector currents leading to decays of the tau into two kaons and a pion. The cornerstones of our framework are the large-N_C limit of QCD, the chiral structure exhibited at low energies and the proper asymptotic behaviour, ruled by QCD, that is demanded to the associated form factors. The couplings of the theory are mostly constrained by this procedure and upon the analysis of BaBar data on e^+e^- -> KK pi we are able to predict the hadronic spectra.
After overviewing the general features of semileptonic decays of the tau lepton, I will recall the most widely used model for them, namely that of Kuhn-Santamaria (KS), and I will explain the subsequent works that were done along these lines and that are implemented in the TAUOLA library for analysing tau decays. After that, I will move to the description of our project that aims to achieve a theory as close as possible to QCD for the considered decays. I conclude by emphasizing the importance of the implementation of our work in TAUOLA.
The hadronic form factors in semileptonic decays of the tau and low-energy e+ e- scattering into hadrons can be described accounting for the following fundamental features: the right chiral structure at low energies, the large-N_C limit of QCD and the known asymptotic behaviour of the theory. All these characteristics are implemented within our approach to the accuracy and within the limits discussed below. Our results -improved with respect to those shown in the talk (they correspond to the ones presented in the V Working Group on Generators for Low-Energy Physics held in Frascati the 6th and…
In supersymmetric scenarios with broken R-parity, baryon number violating sparticle decays are possible. We report on the development of a framework allowing detailed studies with special attention given to the hadronization phase. In our model, implemented in the Pythia event generator, the baryon number violating vertex is associated with the appearance of a junction in the colour confinement field. This allows us to tell where to look for the extra (anti)baryon directly associated with the baryon number violating decay.
We analyse tau -> (3 pions) nu_tau decays within the framework of the resonance chiral theory of QCD. We have worked out the relevant Lagrangian that describes the axial-vector current hadronization contributing to these processes, and the new coupling constants that arise have been constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding spectral function within QCD. Hence we compare the theoretical framework with the experimental data, obtaining a good quality fit from the ALEPH spectral function and branching ratio. We also get values for the mass and on-shell width of the a_1(…
A new phenomenological cluster-hadronization model is presented. Its specific features are the incorporation of soft colour reconnection, a more general treatment of diquarks including their spin and giving rise to clusters with baryonic quantum numbers, and a dynamic separation of the regimes of clusters and hadrons according to their masses and flavours. The distinction between the two regions automatically leads to different cluster decay and transformation modes. Additionally, these aspects require an extension of individual cluster-decay channels that were available in previous versions o…
Tau decays into hadrons foresee the study of the hadronization of vector and axial-vector QCD currents, yielding relevant information on the dynamics of the resonances entering into the processes. We analyse tau -> (3 pion) nu_tau decays within the framework of the Resonance Chiral Theory, comparing this theoretical scheme with the experimental data, namely ALEPH spectral function and branching ratio. Hence we get values for the mass and on-shell width of the a_1(1260) resonance, and provide the structure functions that have been measured by OPAL and CLEO-II.
We present theoretical predictions for the hadroproduction of t tbar W+, t tbar W- and t tbar Z at LHC as obtained by matching numerical computations at NLO accuracy in QCD with Shower Monte Carlo programs. The calculation is performed by PowHel, relying on the POWHEG-BOX framework, that allows for the matching between the fixed order computation, with input of matrix elements produced by the HELAC-NLO collection of event generators, and the Parton Shower evolution, followed by hadronization and hadron decays as described by PYTHIA and HERWIG. We focus on the dilepton and trilepton decay chann…
Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DFF) provide a vast amount of information on the intricate details of the parton hadronization process. Moreover, they provide a unique access to the "clean" extraction of nucleon transversity parton distribution functions in semi inclusive deep inelastic two hadron production process with a transversely polarised target. On the example of the u \to π^+ π^-, we analyse the properties of unpolarised DFFs using their probabilistic interpretation. We use both the NJL-jet hadronization model and PYTHIA 8.1 event generator to explore the effect of the strong decays…
In the hadronic decays of Z, gluon emission leads to the appearance of the longitudinal component of the fragmentation function, F_L. Measurement of F_L and the transverse component, F_T, could thus provide an insight into the gluon fragmentation function. However, hadronization corrections at low x can be significant. Here we present a method of accounting for such corrections, using the JETSET event generator as illustration.
The novel successes scored by the Standard Model of High Energy Physics in the last few years concerning heavy flavour dynamics do not weaken the case for `New Physics' around the TeV scale. They do suggest however that one cannot {\em count} on that New Physics impacting heavy flavour decays in a numerically massive way. Yet studying this impact will be essential in diagnosing the features of the New Physics. In particular the decays of beauty hadrons have to be analyzed with considerable precision on the experimental as well as theoretical side. While hadronization effects often represent th…
The confinement transition from the quark and gluon degrees of freedom appropriate in perturbation theory to the hadrons observed by real world experiments is poorly understood. In this strongly interacting transition regime we presently rely on models, which to varying degrees reflect possible scenarios for the QCD dynamics. Because of the absence of beam and target remnants, and the clean experimental conditions and high event rates, e+e- annihilation to hadrons at the Z0 provides a unique laboratory, both experimentally and theoretically, for the study of parton hadronization. This review d…
Tau decays into hadrons have a twofold interest: On the one hand, they are a clean environment for studying the hadronization of the left-handed current of QCD, while, on the other side, provide relevant dynamical information of the resonances that mediate these processes. Within an effective field theory-like framework, namely Resonance Chiral Theory, we analyse the decays ot the tau into K K pion modes and compare the results with CLEO and BaBar data. In this way, we provide bounds on the couplings entering our Lagrangian and predict the corresponding spectral functions. As a main result -an…
The dispersive approach to QCD is applied to the study of the inclusive tau lepton hadronic decay. This approach provides the unified integral representations for the hadronic vacuum polarization function, related R function, and Adler function. These representations account for the intrinsically nonperturbative constraints, which originate in the kinematic restrictions on the functions on hand, and retain the effects due to hadronization, which play a valuable role in the analysis of the strong interaction processes at low energies. The dispersive approach proves to be capable of describing r…
Exclusive hadronic decays of the tau lepton provide an excellent framework to study the hadronization of QCD currents in a non-perturbative energy region populated by many resonances. I give a short review both on the main theoretical tools employed to analyse experimental data and on how Theory compares with Experiment.
The radiative "B_c -> tau nu_tau gamma" decay is analyzed in the standard model. The branching ratio of this decay is calculated and the contributions of the Bremstrahlung and structure dependent parts are compared. It is shown that this decay can be detected at LHC.
In supersymmetry with large tan(beta) the decays B0(B0bar) -> l+l- are dominated by the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs penguin diagrams leading to strong enhancement of leptonic decay rates with potentially large CP asymmetries in the tau+tau- decay modes measurable in BELLE or BaBar experiments. The TAUOLA tau-lepton decay library supplemented by its universal interface can efficiently be used to search for B0(B0bar) -> tau+tau- decays, and to investigate how the CP asymmetry is reflected in realistic experimental observables.
As of version 8.150 of Pythia, the isotropic decay model of tau-leptons has been replaced with sophisticated tau-lepton decay machinery. The decays and spin correlations for tau-leptons in Pythia 8 are described, including the spin correlation algorithm, the available tau-lepton production processes, the tau-lepton decay models, the user interface, and the implementation.
The structure of the form factors stemmed from the hadronization of QCD currents in the energy region of the resonances can be explored through the analyses of exclusive hadronic decays of the tau lepton. I give a short review on the later theoretical progress achieved in the description of experimental data.
The decay width, forward-backward asymmetry and tau lepton longitudinal and transversal polarization for the exclusive (B -> K tau^+ tau^-) decay in a two Higgs doublet model are computed. It is shown that the forward-backward asymmetry and longitudinal polarization of the tau lepton are very effective tools for establishing new physics.
We examine CP violation in the Delta S=0 decays tau -> omega pi nu_tau and tau -> a_1 pi nu_tau and the Delta S=1 decay tau -> K pi pi nu_tau. We assume that the new physics is a charged Higgs. We show that sizeable CP-violating effects are possible in tau -> a_1 pi nu_tau (polarization-dependent rate asymmetry) and tau -> omega pi nu_ tau (triple-product asymmetry). The Delta S=1 decay tau -> K pi pi nu_tau can proceed via several resonances. We construct two modified rate asymmetries and a triple product asymmetry for this decay and discuss the potential sensitivities of these asymmetries.
The possibility of detecting the S-wave of the decays tau -> 3 pi + nu(tau) in the threshold region is explored, with emphasis on the sensitivity to the size of the quark antiquark condensate <qq>.
The new parameterization of form factors developed for 4pi channels of the tau lepton decay and based on Novosibirsk data on e^+e^- -> 4pi has been coded in a form suitable for the TAUOLA Monte Carlo package. Comparison with results from TAUOLA using another parameterization, i.e. the CLEO version of 1998 is also included.
TauDecay is a library of helicity amplitudes to simulate polarized tau decays, constructed in the FeynRules and MadGraph5 framework. Together with the leptonic mode, the decay library includes the main hadronic modes, τ\to ν_τ+π, 2π, and 3π, which are introduced as effective vertices by using FeynRules. The model file allows us to simulate tau decays when the on-shell tau production is kinematically forbidden. We also demonstrate that all possible correlations among the decay products of pair-produced taus through a Z boson and a scalar/pseudoscalar Higgs boson are produced automatically. The …
We have derived constraints on the tau neutrino mass and fourth generation mixing from an analysis of the partial widths of tau lepton decays, in particular: tau -> e nu nu_tau, tau -> mu nu nu_tau, tau -> pi nu_tau, tau -> K nu_tau. We present predictions for the tau decay widths, allowing for a non-zero tau neutrino mass, m(nu_tau), and for mixing with a neutrino of mass m(nu_L) > M_Z/2, which is parametrised using a Cabibbo-like mixing angle, theta_L. By comparison of these theoretical predictions with the experimental measurements, we obtain the following bounds at the 90% confidence level…
The predictions of an isospin model are compared with the branching ratios of the 5 and 6 pion decays of the tau lepton. In both cases, the isospin model suggests that the tau favours decays in which there is an omega resonance. Recent measurements of such tau decays confirm this hypothesis. If the decay of the tau to 7 pions also proceeds through an intermediate omega, then the isospin model predicts that the branching ratio of the tau to seven charged pions should be small when compared with other 7 pion decays. New limits on this mode appear to support this argument.
We re-examine CP violation in the Delta S = 0 decays tau -> N pi nu_tau (N=2,3,4). We assume that the new physics (NP) is a charged Higgs. We show that there is no NP contribution to tau -> pi pi nu_tau, which means that no CP violation is expected in this decay. On the other hand, NP can contribute to tau -> N pi nu_tau (N=3,4). These are dominated by the intermediate resonant decays tau -> omega pi nu_tau, tau -> rho pi nu_tau and tau -> a_1 pi nu_tau. We show that the only sizeable CP-violating effects which are possible are in tau -> a_1 pi nu_tau -> 4 pi nu_tau (polarization-dependent rat…
This Fifth International WEIN Symposium is devoted to physics beyond the standard model. This talk is about tau lepton physics, but I begin with the question: do we know how to find new physics in the world of elementary particles? This question is interwoven with the various tau physics topics. These topics are: searching for unexpected tau decay modes; searching for additional tau decay mechanisms; radiative tau decays; tau decay modes of the W, B, and D; decay of the Z^0 to tau pairs; searching for CP violation in tau decay; the tau neutrino, dreams and odd ideas in tau physics; and tau res…
The status of the Monte Carlo programs for the simulation of the $τ$ lepton production in high energy accelerator experiments and decay is reviewed. In particular, the status of the following packages is discussed: (i) TAUOLA for tau-lepton decay, (ii) PHOTOS for radiative corrections in decays, (iii) KORALB, KORALZ, KKMC packages for tau-pair production in e+e- collisions and (iv) universal interface of TAUOLA for the decay of tau-leptons produced by``any'' generator. Special emphasis on requirements from new and future experiments is given. Some considerations about the software organization…
The radiative B -> tau^+ tau^- gamma decay is investigated in the framework of the Standard Model. When only short (short and long together) distance contributions are taken into account, the Branching Ratio is found as 9.54x10^(-9) (1.52x10^(-8)), for the value of the cut delta = 0.01 imposed on the photon energy.
Exclusive semi-leptonic decays of the tau lepton offer a clean probe to study the hadronization of QCD currents in its non-perturbative regime and learn about resonance dynamics, which drives strong interactions in these processes. In this theory outlook, I will use the simplest non-trivial di-pion tau decays to illustrate briefly recent theoretical progress on these analyses and their comparison to data.
In recent years, $B_s$ decays into $tau^+tau^-$ has attracted a lot of attention since it is very sensitive to the structure of standard model (SM) and potential source of new physics beyond SM. In this paper, we study the effect of both Z and -mediated flavor-changing neutral currents on the $B_s$ decays into $tau^+tau^-$. We find the branching ratio of $B_s$ decays into $tau^+tau^-$ is enhanced relative to SM prediction, which would help to explain the recent observed CP-violation from like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in the B system.
We analyse the hadronization structure of both vector and axial-vector currents leading to tau -> KKpi nu_tau decays. At leading order in the 1/Nc expansion, and considering only the contribution of the lightest resonances, we work out, within the framework of the resonance chiral Lagrangian, the structure of the local vertices involved in those processes. The couplings in the resonance theory are constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of vector and axial-vector spectral functions ruled by QCD. In this way we predict the hadron spectra and conclude that, contrarily to previous assert…
The H to tau tau decays form the prime channel for the measurement of the Higgs boson state and tests of the CP invariance of Higgs boson couplings. A previous study has shown the viability of deep learning techniques for the measurement. In this paper, the study is expanded. Effects due to the partial modelling of experimental effects are discussed. Furthermore, systematics due to ? decay modelling for complex cascade decays to tau^pm to a_1^pm nu_tau to rho^0 pi^pm nu_tau to 3pi^\pm nu_tau are also addressed. Various parameterisations are considered using low-energy collision data.
The τ\to (a_1 h)^- ν_τ decays of the τ-lepton are studied using the method of phenomenological chiral Lagrangians. The expression of weak hadronic currents between pseudoscalar and axial-vector meson states is obtained. Calculated partial widths for these decays are compared with the available experimental data.
Motivated by recent estimates of the isospin-violating process tau \to eta pi nu_tau, mostly relying on the rho and a_0 dominance of the relevant form factors near threshold, we present an assessment for the branching ratio that accounts for additional, potential, effects from the lowest radial excitations rho(1450) and a_0(1450), respectively, also lying in the decay phase space.
I)The production of multiple strange baryons in pp interactions is studied. Here on can directly probe the microscopic decay of color flux tubes, allowing to differentiate between different string models and a statistical description of the hadronization. II)To analyse the different stages of a heavy ion collision the time evolution of the elastic and inelastic collision rates in central Pb+Pb interactions are studied. The microscopic simulation supports the idea of separated phases (non-equilibrium -> chemical freeze-out -> kinetic freeze-out) in the evolution of the system. The spectra and a…
We investigate the relations between the K_{l3} and tau --> K pi nu_tau decays using the meson dominance approach. First, the experimental branching fractions (BF) for K^-_{e3} and K^0_{e3} are used to fix two normalization constants (isospin invariance is not assumed). Then, the BF of tau^- --> K^*(892)^- nu_tau is calculated in agreement with experiment. We further argue that the nonzero value of the slope parameter lambda_0 of the K^-_{mu3} and K^0_{mu3} form factors f_0(t) implies the existence of the tau^- --> K_0^*(1430)^- nu_tau decay. We calculate its BF, together with BF's of the K^-_…
The tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large-Nc expansion, this process has been studied in Ref.[1]. In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a_1 resonance that provides a good description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the rho(1450) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau process in excel…
We evaluate the compositeness effects of tau lepton on the vertex W-tau-nu(tau) in the context of an effective Lagrangian approach. We consider that only the third family is composed and we get the corrections to the non universal lepton coupling g_(tau)/g_(e). As the experimental bounds on non universal lepton couplings in W decays are weak, we find that the excited particles contributions do not give realistic limits on the excited mass, since they lead to Lambda<m*.
We study the effects induced by excited leptons on the leptonic tau decay at one loop level. Using a general effective lagrangian approach to describe the couplings of the excited leptons, we compute their contributions to the leptonic decays and use the current experimental values of the branching ratios to put limits on the mass of excited states and the substructure scale.
Establishing CP violation in B0 (bar{B0}) --> l+ l- decays requires a measurement of polarization of the final lepton pair, or a precise determination of the B0 --> l+ l- and bar{B0} --> l+ l- rates. We first argue that if the amplitudes of these decays are dominated by the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs penguin diagrams, as happens e.g. in supersymmetry with large tan(beta), the CP asymmetries depend practically on only one CP violating phase. This phase can be large, of the order of the CKM phase, leading to large CP asymmetries in the tau+ tau- decay channel of B0_d (bar{B0}_d) mesons, poten…
Recently there has been much interest in the tauonic semileptonic meson decays B -> D + tau + nu_tau and B -> D* + tau + nu_tau where one has found larger rates than what is predicted by the Standard Model. We analyze the corresponding semileptonic baryon decays Lambda_b(0) -> Lambda_c(+) + tau(-) + antinu_tau with particular emphasis on the lepton helicity flip and scalar contributions which vanish for zero lepton masses. We calculate the total rate, differential decay distributions, the longitudinal and transverse polarization of the daughter baryon Lambda_c(+) and the tau-lepton, and the le…
In this paper, we discuss application of the TauSpinner package as a simulation tool for measuring the CP state of the newly discovered Higgs boson using the transverse spin correlations in the H to tau tau decay channel. We discuss application for its main background Z/gamma* to tau tau as well. The TauSpinner package allows one to add, with the help of weights, transverse spin correlations corresponding to any mixture of scalar/pseudoscalar state, on already existing events using information from the kinematics of outgoing tau leptons and their decay products only. This procedure can be used…
We have calculated the O(alpha) radiative corrections to the tau decay tau -> pi (K) nu, taking into account both the point meson contribution and the structure dependent radiation. We find for the ratio Gamma(tau -> pi nu (gamma)) / Gamma(pi -> mu nu (gamma)) a radiative correction of + 1.2% and for Gamma(tau -> K nu (gamma)) / Gamma(K -> mu nu (gamma)) one of + 2.0%. We compare our results with an earlier estimation and with experimental data.
We study the sensitivity of the LHC, with 20 inverse-fb of data, to lepton flavour violating Higgs boson decays h -> tau+ mu- (and h -> tau+ e-). We consider the large population of Higgses produced in gluon fusion, combined with leptonic decays of the tau, and estimate that the LHC could set a 95 % confidence level bound BR(h -> tau mu) < 4.5 \times 10^{-3}. This correponds to a coupling of order the Cheng-Sher ansatz y_{tau mu} = sqrt{m_tau m_mu/v^2}.
We show how the sum of the two average tau polarisations in the decay chain chi20 -> stau1 tau -> tau tau chi10 in minimal supersymmetry with conserved R-parity can be measured at the LHC. This is accomplished by exploiting the polarisation dependence of the visible di-tau mass spectrum. Such a measurement provides information on the couplings of the involved SUSY particles and allows a more precise determination of the di-tau mass endpoint. If different tau decay modes can be distinguished, the polarisation and endpoint measurement can be improved even further.
The QCD analysis of hadronic tau decays is reviewed and a summary of the present phenomenological status is presented. The following topics are discussed: the determination of alpha_s(m_tau) = 0.338 +- 0.012 from the inclusive tau hadronic width, the measurement of |V_us| through the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the tau, and the extraction of chiral-perturbation-theory couplings from the spectral tau data.
We present an update of the Monte Carlo event generator TAUOLA for tau lepton decays, with substantially increased list of decay channels and new initialization options. The core of the program remains written in FORTRAN but necessary arrangements have been made to allow handling of the user-provided hadronic currents and matrix elements at the execution time. Such solution may simplify preparation of new hadronic currents and may be useful for fitting to the experimental data as well. We have implemented as default for TAUOLA a set of hadronic currents, which is compatible with the default in…
We present an assessment of the standard model expectations for the branching ratio of the isotopic spin and G-parity violating decay tau --> eta' pi nu_tau. The estimate is based on a vector and scalar meson dominance parametrization of the relevant form factors, that explicitly accounts for pi^0-eta-eta' mixing. The numerical results obtained in this framework indicate a branching ratio one order of magnitude (or more) below the current experimental limit, and suggest the possibility of evidencing some novel interaction in high statistics studies of this decay.
Here we study and compare the sensitivity to the Higgs sector of the SUSY-seesaw models via the LFV tau decays: tau-> 3 mu, tau->K^{+}K^{-}, tau->mu eta and tau-> mu f_{0}. We emphasize that, at present, the two later channels are the most efficient ones to test indirectly the Higgs particles.
We present the numerical investigation of the fermionic two-body decays of tau sleptons $\tilde τ_{1,2}$ and $τ$ sneutrino in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with complex parameters. In the analysis we particularly take into account the cosmological bounds imposed by WMAP data. We plot the CP-phase dependences for each fermionic two-body channel of $\tilde τ_{1,2}$ and $τ$ sneutrino and speculate about the branching ratios and total (two-body) decay widths. We find that the phase dependences of the decay widths of the third family sleptons are quite significant which can provide viab…
