The coupling of unparticles to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson leads to a breaking of conformal symmetry which produces an effective mass term in the unparticle propagator. Simultaneously, the unparticle couplings to other SM fields produces an effective unparticle decay width via one-loop self-energy graphs. The resulting unparticle propagator then leads to a rather unique appearance for the shape of unparticle resonances that are not of the usual Breit-Wigner variety when they form in high energy collisions. In this paper we explore whether or not such resonances, appearing in the Drell-Yan channel at the LHC, can be differentiated from more conventional $Z'$-like structures which are representative of the typical Breit-Wigner lineshape. We will demonstrate that even with the high integrated luminosities available at the LHC it may be difficult to differentiate these two types of resonance structures for a substantial range of the unparticle model parameters.
We have considered the di-photon production with unparticle at LHC. The contributions of spin-0 and spin-2 unparticle to the di-photon production are studied in the invariant mass and other kinematical distributions, along with their dependencies on the model dependent parameters. The signal corresponding to the unparticle is significant for moderate coupling constant values.
We investigate the rare radiative decays of extra gauge neutral bosons. In particular, we established the theoretical predictions for the production of unparticle in decays of $Z^{\prime}$ - bosons. The implementation of our prediction in the analysis at the LHC experiments should be straightforward and lead to more precise determination or limits of unparticle couplings and/or $Z^{\prime}$ couplings and masses.
We study the effects of unparticle physics in the pair productions of top quarks at the LHC and ILC. By considering vector, tensor and scalar unparticle operators, as appropriate, we compute the total cross sections for pair production processes depending on scale dimension $d_{\U}$. We find that the existence of unparticles would lead to measurable enhancements on the SM predictions at the LHC. In the case of ILC this may become two orders of magnitude larger than that of SM, for smaller values of $d_\U$, a very striking signal for unparticles.
If the scale invariance exists in nature, the so-called unparticle physics may become part of reality. The only way to refute or confirm this idea is through the experiments one of which is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). One of the peculiar properties of the unparticle stuff is that it gives striking multi-photon signals which has been studied through only the unparticle self-interactions. By considering not only the self-interactions of unparticles but also all the other possible contributions, which are dominant, a detailed study of the processes, within a scalar unparticle scenario, $pp\t…
The exclusive production pp->pXp is known to be one of the most clean channels at the LHC. We investigate the potential of processes pp -> p l-l+ p and pp-> p gamma gamma p to probe scalar and tensor unparticles by considering three different forward detector acceptances; 0.0015<xi<0.15, 0.0015<xi<0.5 and 0.1<xi<0.5. We obtain 95% confidence level sensitivity limits on the unparticle couplings for various integrated luminosities.
We summarize the works presented in Refs. \cite{1,2} on collider phenomenology of the unparticle physics associated with an exact scale invariant sector possessing a non-trivial infrared fixed point at a high energy scale. We give highlights on the motivations of unparticle and derivation of the phase space and the unparticle propagator. We study two categories of phenomenology: (i) real emission of unparticle that gives rise to peculiar missing energy signatures, and (ii) virtual exchange of unparticle that interferes with the standard model amplitudes.
In this work, we study the possible unparticle signatures through tau pair production e+e- -> tau+tau- process at the low energy particle factories. We take into account lepton flavor conserving (s-channel) and violating (t-channel) couplings for the unparticle leptonic interactions. For different values of the scaling parameter d we extract upper limits on the scalar unparticle couplings at the integrated luminosities of 100/fb.yr and 1 ab/fb.yr.
We consider a scenario where ultra high energy neutrinos undergo unparticle decay during its passage from its cosmological source to Earth. The idea of unparticle had been first proposed by Georgi by considering the possible existence of an unknown scale invariant sector at high energies and the unparticles in this sector manifest itself below a dimensional transmutation scale $Λ_{\cal U}$. We then explore the possible signature of such decaying neutrinos to unparticles at a square kilometer detector such as IceCube.
Theories with extra dimensions have gained much interest in recent years as candidates for a possible extension of the SM. The observation of large extra dimensions through real graviton emission is one of the most popular related new phenomena. The main experimental signatures from graviton emission are production of single jet and single photon events, which have been studied in great detail. This work describes the implementation of graviton production together with either a Z or a photon in Pythia 8. The potential of using Z plus graviton production at the LHC as a complementary channel is…
We investigate the effect of unparticles in the pure annihilation type decays $B^- \to D_s^-ϕ$ and $ D_s^- K^{*0}$. Since these decays have only annihilation contributions their branching ratios are expected to be very small in the standard model and the direct CP asymmetry parameters to be zero. We find that due to the unparticle effect these branching ratios can be significantly enhanced from their standard model values. Furthermore, sizable nonzero direct CP violation could also be possible in these channels due to the presence of intrinsic CP conserving phase in the unparticle propagator.
We report the phenomenological impact of unparticles in the production of di-jet at the LHC. We compute the scalar, spin-1 and spin-2 unparticle contributions to the dijet cross sections and present our results in different kinematical distributions. We find that the scalar unparticle contribution is dominant over that of the spin-1 and spin-2 unparticles for the same coupling values.
Among different measured observables of top-antitop quark pairs at hadron colliders, the forward-backward asymmetry ($A_{\text{FB}}$) measured by the CDF and D0 collaborations has inconsistency with the Standard Model prediction. The measured forward-backward asymmetry grows with $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass. Several new physics models have been proposed to explain this deviation. We consider the consistency of the parameter space of vector unparticle (in Flavor-Conserving scenario) with the existing $t\bar{t}$ production measurements. In particular, we look at the total cross sections at the LHC…
We compute to next-to-leading order in QCD the tensor unparticle contribution to the diphoton production at the LHC, wherein the unparticle sector is a consequence of (a) scale invariance but not full conformal invariance and (b) conformal invariance. We use the semi-analytical two cutoff phase space slicing method to handle the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to the $p p \to γγX$ and show that our results are insensitive to the soft and collinear cutoffs. In order to avoid the contribution of the photons due to fragmentation, we employ the smooth cone isolation criterion. Significance of the QCD …
The existence of scale invariant physics would lead to new phenomena in particle physics that could be detected at the LHC. In this paper we exploit the effects of these unparticles in $WW \to WW$ scattering. From the requirement of unitarity we derive constraints on unparticle physics. We show that the existence of unparticles would lead to deviations in differential cross sections which can be measured. These deviations are sensitive on the scale dimension and on the spin characteristics of the unparticles.
We study supersymmetric QCD in the conformal window as a laboratory for unparticle physics, and analyze couplings between the unparticle sector and the Higgs sector. These couplings can lead to the unparticle sector being pushed away from its scale invariant fixed point. We show that this implies that low energy experiments will not be able to see unparticle physics, and the best hope of seeing unparticles is in high energy collider experiments such as the Tevatron and the LHC. We also demonstrate how the breaking of scale invariance could be observed at these experiments.
We examine a scenario where the new physics at the LHC includes an approximate conformal field theory, where some of the degrees of freedom (aka "unparticles") carry a color charge. We present a simple argument showing that the production cross section for scalar unparticles mediated by a gauge interaction is given by (2-d) times the standard particle expression, where d is the scaling dimension of the unparticle field. We explicitly check that this is indeed the case, which involves non trivial cancellations between different Feynman diagrams, for the process q qbar to scalar unparticles.
We investigate the effect of unparticle self-interactions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Especially, we discuss the three-point correlation function, which is determined by conformal symmetry up to a constant, and study its relation to processes with four-particle final states. These processes could be used as a favorable way to look for unparticle physics, and for weak enough couplings to the Standard Model, even the only way. We find updated upper bounds on the cross sections for unparticle-mediated 4 gamma final states at the LHC and novel upper bounds for the corresponding 2 gamma 2l …
The scale invariant unparticle physics recently proposed by Georgi could manifest at low energies as non integral number d_U of invisible particles. Unparticles if existing, could couple to the Standard Model fields and consequently affect the collider phenomenology. We consider the DY process to explore effects of the peculiar propagator of the scalar and tensor unparticle operators. To probe these effects at hadron collider one needs to go beyond LO in QCD and hence the quantitative impact of QCD corrections for unparticle physics at LHC is investigated. We present the K-factors at LHC. Incl…
Based on the idea that tensor unparticles can enhance the gravitational interactions between standard model particles, potential black hole formation in high energy collisions is examined. Modifications to the horizon radius $r_H$ are derived, and the corresponding geometric cross-sections of such objects are calculated. It is shown that $r_H$ increases dramatically to the electroweak scale for masses $M_{BH} \sim 1-10 $TeV, yielding a geometric cross-section $σ_{BH}=πr_H^2$ on the order of $leq 50$ pb. This suggests that unparticle physics provides a mechanism for black hole formation in futu…
Using methods of effective field theory, we show that after resummation of Sudakov logarithms the spectral densities of interacting quark and gluon fields in ordinary quantum field theories such as QCD are virtually indistinguishable from those of "unparticles" of a hypothetical conformal sector coupled to the Standard Model, recently studied by Georgi. Unparticles are therefore less exotic that originally thought. Models in which a hidden sector weakly coupled to the Standard Model contains a QCD-like theory, which confines at some scale much below the characteristic energy of a given process…
We construct a model of an unparticle sector consisting of a supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with the number of flavors in the Seiberg conformal window. We couple this sector to the MSSM via heavy messengers. The resulting low energy theory has a Higgs coupling to unparticles. The Higgs vev drives the hidden Seiberg sector to a new conformal fixed point. The coupling to the Higgs mediates supersymmetry breaking to the Seiberg sector, and breaks conformal invariance at a lower scale. The low energy theory contains light stable and metastable mesons. Higgs decay into this sector gives signatur…
Hidden valleys, hidden sectors with multi-particle dynamics and a mass gap, can produce striking and unusual final states at the LHC. Unparticle models, hidden-sectors with conformal dynamics and no (or a very small) mass gap, can result in unusual kinematic features that indirectly reflect the conformal dynamics. When sufficiently large mass gaps are added to unparticle models, they become hidden valley models. Predictions using unparticle propagators alone overlook the most striking signals, which are typically of hidden-valley type. Inclusive signatures often cannot be predicted from unpart…
Unparticles charged under a gauge group can contribute to the running of the gauge coupling. We show that a scalar unparticle of scaling dimension d contributes to the βfunction a term that is (2-d) times that from a scalar particle in the same representation. This result has important implications on asymptotic freedom. An unparticle with d>2, in contrast to its matter counterpart, can speed up the approach to asymptotic freedom for a non-Abelian gauge theory and has the tendency to make an Abelian theory also asymptotically free. For not spoiling the excellent agreement of the standard model…
The tau is the only known lepton that can decay hadronically. From this class of decays, high precision measurements of several quantities can be extracted: the CKM matrix element $V_{us}$, the mass of the strange quark, etc. Also, as a result of its large variety of decay channels, the study of the tau lepton represents an interesting tool to search for CP violation and other new physics effects. In this work, a spin-0 unparticle is considered and its contributions to the electromagnetic and weak properties of the tau lepton are calculated. It is found that such contributions can be greater t…
The existence of an unparticle sector, weakly coupled to the standard model, would have a profound impact on supernova (SN) physics. Emission of energy into the unparticle sector from the core of SN1987A would have significantly shortened the observed neutrino burst. The unparticle interaction with nucleons, neutrinos, electrons and muons is constrained to be so weak that it is unlikely to provide any missing-energy signature at colliders. One important exception are models where scale invariance in the hidden sector is broken by the Higgs vacuum expectation value. In this case the SN emission…
A study of mu-tau conversion via the deep inelastic scattering process μN -> τX, with N a nucleon, is performed taking into account the effects from both spin-0 and spin-1 unparticles with lepton flavor violating (LFV) couplings. This process has attracted attention in the past as it may be at the reach of a future neutrino or muon factory. For the model parameters, we use the most recent constraints on the unparticle LFV couplings from the experimental limits on the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the LFV decay τ-> 3μ, whereas for the unparticle scale Λ_U and scale dimension d_U we use the…
High scale conformal physics can lead to unusual unparticle stuff at our low energies. In this paper we discuss how the exchange of unparticles between Standard Model fields can lead to new contact interaction physics as well as a pseudoresonance-like structure, an unresonance, that might be observable at the Tevatron or LHC in, e.g., the Drell-Yan channel. The specific signatures of this scenario are quite unique and can be used to easily identify this new physics given sufficient integrated luminosity.
Several new physics scenarios can lead to monojet signatures at the LHC. If such events are observed above the Standard Model background it will be important to identify their origin. In this paper we compare and contrast these signatures as produced in two very different pictures: vector or scalar unparticle production in the scale-invariant/conformal regime and graviton emission in the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali extra-dimensional model. We demonstrate that these two scenarios can be distinguished at the LHC for a reasonable range of model parameters through the shape of their respect…
An algorithm is developed which the goal of producing the most statistically significant signature list for distinguishing between two candidate models given a set of LHC observations.
The ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have devoted considerable effort to the study of SUSY signatures and measurements. This talk provides an overview of what can be learned at the LHC if TeV-scale SUSY exists.
We discuss phenomenological consequences of renormalizable Z` models with continuously distributed mass. We point out that one of possible LHC signatures for such nodel is the existence of broad resonance in Drell-Yan reaction $pp \to Z^{`} \to l^+l^-$.
We present the phenomenology of a supersymmetric model with sneutrino as the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) in the gravitino dark matter scenario at the LHC. We focus on the leptonic signatures and study the feasibility of a particular trilepton signature as a possible discovery channel of supersymmetry.
Cascade seesaw mechanism generates neutrino mass at higher dimension (5+4n) operators through tree level diagram which bring the seesaw scale down to TeV and provide collider signatures within LHC reach. In particular, both Type-II scalar and Type-III heavy fermion seesaw signatures exist in such a scenario. Doubly charged scalar decays into diboson is dominant. We perform a thorough study on the LHC signals and the Standard Model background. We draw the conclusion that multilepton final state from interplay of doubly charged scalar and heavy fermion can provide distinguishable signatures from…
We discuss the implications of a gauged Abelian hidden-sector communicating with the Standard Model (SM) fields via kinetic mixing with the SM hypercharge gauge field, or via the Higgs quartic interaction. We discuss signatures of the hidden-sector gauge boson at the LHC in the four-lepton channel. We show that a hidden-sector fermion can be a natural dark-matter candidate with the correct relic-density, discuss direct-detection prospects, and show how Higgs signatures may be altered at the LHC.
We study the signature of $H^\pm$ decay into $h^0W$ at the LHC in SUSY models. It has only marginal viability in the MSSM. But in the singlet extensions like the NMSSM one can have a spectacular signature for $H^\pm$ decay into $(h^0,A^0)W$ over a significant domain of parameter space.
We investigate the heavier electroweakino sectors in several versions of the MSSM, which has not been explored so far in the light of the LHC data, and obtain new bounds using the ATLAS Run I constraints in the $3l + {E\!\!\!\!/_T}$ channel. We also venture beyond the trilepton events and predict several novel multilepton + ${E\!\!\!\!/_T}$ signatures of these electroweakinos which may show up before the next shutdown of the LHC.
Signatures of soft supersymmetry breaking at the CERN LHC and in dark matter experiments are discussed with focus drawn to light superparticles, and in particular light gauginos and their discovery prospects. Connected to the above is the recent PAMELA positron anomaly and its implications for signatures of SUSY in early runs at the Large Hadron Collider. Other new possibilities for physics beyond the Standard Model are also briefly discussed.
We discuss a few new characteristic features of the loop-induced MSSM Higgs-sector CP violation at the LHC based on two scenarios: (i) CPX and (ii) Trimixing.
This talk summarizes work by the ATLAS Collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider on the search SUSY particles and Higgs bosons and on possible measurements of their properties.
We study the phenomenology of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector in which the physics is dominated by spin one resonances. Specifically we will consider an effective description of dynamical symmetry breaking based on a particular model which passes all the low-energy precision tests and gives clear signals at LHC but also at Tevatron Upgrade.
The Higgs particle can decay dominantly into an invisible channel in the Majoron models. We have explored the prospect of detecting such a Higgs particle at LHC via its associated production with a gluon, Z or W boson. While the signal/background ratio is too small for the first process, the latter two provide viable signatures for detecting such a Higgs particle.
We investigate production and detection prospects of the quintuplet heavy leptons at the LHC in the context of a new model which is proposed as a viable and testable solution to the neutrino masses problem. We classify the signals, carry out a full simulation on the signals and the relevant backgrounds at the 14 TeV LHC. After applying suitable kinematic cuts, the background events are substantially suppressed. The signals of the heavy leptons might be detected at the 14 TeV LHC.
We report on a plan to establish a "Dictionary of LHC Signatures", an initiative that started at the WHEPPX workshop in January 2008. This study aims towards the strategy on distinguishing of 3 classes of dark matter motivated scenarios such as R-parity conserved supersymmetry, Little Higgs models with T-parity conservation and Universal Extra Dimensions with KK-parity for generic cases of their realization in wide range of the model space. Discriminating signatures are tabulated and will need a further detailed analysis.
The advent of the LHC, and the proposal of building future colliders as the ILC, both programmed to explore new physics at the TeV scale, justifies the recent interest in studying all kind of seesaw mechanisms whose signature lies on such energy scale. The natural candidate for this kind of seesaw mechanism is the inverse one. The conventional inverse seesaw mechanism is implemented in an arrangement involving six new heavy neutrinos in addition to the three standard ones. In this paper we develop the inverse seesaw mechanism based on Higgs triplet model and probe its signature at the LHC and …
We revisit the exclusive signature $e^\pm (μ^\pm) + b\bar b$ in the associated production of the intermediate mass Higgs boson with a $W$ boson. We show that it is feasible to use this signature to identify the Higgs boson in the lower intermediate mass region ($90$ to $130$ GeV) at the LHC with reasonable acceptance cuts by assuming effective bottom-jet identification. We further demonstrate that the background can be reduced with judicious cuts down to the level of the signal.
We discuss a field theoretical framework to describe the interactions of non-thermal quantum black holes (QBHs) with particles of the Standard Model. We propose a non-local Lagrangian to describe the production of these QBHs which is designed to reproduce the geometrical cross section for black hole production. This model is implemented into CalcHEP package and is publicly available at the High Energy Model Database (HEPMDB) for simulation of QBH events at the LHC and future colliders. We present the first phenomenological application of the QBH@HEPMDB model with spin-0 neutral QBH giving rise…
Leptonic signatures of Dark Matter (DM) are one of the cleanest ways to discover such a secluded form of matter at high energy colliders. We explore the full parameter space relevant to multi-lepton (2- and 3-lepton) signatures at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from representative minimal consistent models with scalar and fermion DM. In our analysis, we suggest a new parametrisation of the model parameter spaces in terms of the DM mass and mass differences between DM and its multiplet partners. This parametrisation allows us to explore properties of DM models in their whole parameter space. T…
Little Higgs models are often endowed with a T-parity in order to satisfy electroweak precision tests and give at the same time a stable particle which is a candidate for cold dark matter. This type of models predicts a set of new T-odd fermions in addition to the heavy gauge bosons of the Little Higgs models, which may show interesting signatures at colliders. In this paper, we study the signatures of strong and electroweak pair production of the first two generations of T-odd quarks at the LHC. We focus on the dileptonic signatures (p p to l l j j MET) with (a) opposite-sign dileptons and (b…
In this letter, we investigate the production of light dark matter particles at LHC in light of the model (N = 2 SUSY inspired) proposed in Ref. [1] and demonstrate that they will be copiously produced if the colored messengers Fq are lighter than 1 TeV. We expect up to a million events if the Fq mass is about 500 GeV, assuming a ~1 inverse fb luminosity. In addition, we show that, even if the Fq mass is above a few TeV, searches for Fq production at LHC are promising because a kinematical signature can be used to separate the signal from background. This signature is similar to that expected …
The hadronic tau decay channel offers by far the best signature for heavy charged Higgs boson search at the LHC in the large $\tanβ$ region. By exploiting the distinct polarization of the tau and its large transverse mass, along with the accompanying missing--$p_T$, one can probe for a charged Higgs boson up to a mass of about 600 GeV in an essentially background-free environment. The transverse mass distribution of the tau jet also provides a fairly unambiguous estimate of the charged Higgs boson mass.
Color octet (pseudo)scalars, if they exist, will be copiously produced at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, their detection can become a very challenging task. In particular, if their decay into a pair of top quarks is kinematically forbidden, the main decay channel would be into two jets, with a very large background. In this Brief Report we explore the possibility of using anomaly-induced decays of the color octet pseudoscalars into gauge bosons to find them at the LHC.
The opposite states of the $τ$ polarization resulting from the charged Higgs boson and the $W$ boson decays can be exploited to enhance the $H^\pm$ signal in the inclusive 1-prong hadronic decay channel of $τ$. We suggest practical methods of sharpening up the $H^\pm$ signature in the top quark decay at LHC using this idea. As a result one can carry on the charged Higgs boson search to within $\sim 20 GeV$ of the parent top quark mass over the full parameter space of the MSSM.
Supersymmetric cascades, involving charginos and neutralinos at various stages, contribute in a significant way to Higgs production at the LHC. We explore the nature of such cascades, completely relaxing the universality of the gaugino masses. It is found that the deviation from the scenario with universal gaugino masses would be reflected in the relative production rates for the lightest Higgs and the charged Higgses, two characteristic particles of an extended Higgs sector.
We show how the well studied $γγ$ inclusive Higgs signal can be used at the Large Hadron Collider to test Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking scenarios in which a rather heavy Higgs boson decays into two light neutralinos, the latter yielding two photons and missing (transverse) energy
The resonant production of sneutrinos at the LHC via the R-parity violating couplings $ł'_{ijk} L_i Q_j D^c_k$ is studied through its three-leptons signature. A detailed particle level study of signal and background is performed using a fast simulation of the ATLAS detector. Through the full reconstruction of the cascade decay, a model-independent and precise measurement of the masses of the involved sparticles can be performed. Besides, this signature can be detected in a large part of the SUSY parameter space and for wide ranges of values of several $ł'_{ijk}$ coupling constants.
We discuss two striking Large Hadron Collider (LHC) signatures of the constrained version of the exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM), based on a universal high energy soft scalar mass m_0, soft trilinear coupling A_0 and soft gaugino mass M_{1/2}. The first signature we discuss is that of light exotic colour triplet charge 1/3 fermions, which we refer to as D-fermions. We calculate the LHC production cross section of D-fermions, and discuss their decay patterns. Secondly we discuss the E6 type U(1)_N spin-1 Z' gauge boson and show how it may decay into exotic states, increasing …
The isolated like sign dilepton signature for gluino production is investigated at the LHC energy for the $R$ conserving as well as the $L$ and $B$ violating SUSY models over a wide range of the parameter space. One gets viable signals for gluino masses of 300 and 600 GeV for both $R$ conserving and $L$ violating models, while it is less promising for the $B$ violating case. For a 1000 GeV gluino, the $L$ violating signal should still be viable; but the $R$ conserving signal becomes too small at least for the low luminosity option of LHC.
We have examined the dijet production at the LHC as a hint to discovery of string Regge excitations of Standard Model particles. If the fundamental string mass scale is in the TeV range, the influence of string effects on the $pp$ interaction can arise as new resonances in the dijet invariant mass distribution. Near the first resonant pole we investigate the impact of the subprocesses with quark-gluon and four-gluon separately. We show that the LHC is able to probe the string mass scale $\sim$5 TeV with only 2 pb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at $E_{CM}=14$ TeV.
The process $pp \to W^+W^+jj$ gives rise to an exotic Standard Model signature at the LHC, involving high-$p_{\perp}$ like-sign leptons, missing energy and jets. In this brief article the motivation for study, along with selected results from the computation of NLO QCD corrections to the QCD-mediated part of this process\cite{us} are presented. It is shown that the corrections reduce the dependence of the cross-section on renormalisation and factorisation scales, and produce a relatively hard third jet in a significant fraction of events.
