The Gaia satellite will be launched at the end of 2011. It will observe at least 1 billion stars, and among them several million emission line stars and hot stars. Gaia will provide parallaxes for each star and spectra for stars till V magnitude equal to 17. After a general description of Gaia, we present the codes and methods, which are currently developed by our team. They will provide automatically the astrophysical parameters and spectral classification for the hot and emission line stars in the Milky Way and other close Local Group galaxies such as the Magellanic Clouds.

The Gaia satellite is a high-precision astrometry, photometry and spectroscopic ESA cornerstone mission, currently scheduled for launch in late 2011. Model Spectra of Hot Subdwarfs for the Gaia Mission

The Gaia mission will provide an unprecedented 3D view of our galaxy, it will obtain astrometric, photometric and spectrographic data for roughly one billion stars. We are particularly interested in the treasure chest of new data Gaia will produce for hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars. In order for Gaia to classify sdBs and estimate parameters model spectra covering a wide parameter range are needed. Here we describe the construction of an extensive grid, which will be used for this purpose.

Detection of satellite remnants in the Galactic Halo with Gaia - I. The effect of the Galactic background, observational errors and sampling

We address the problem of identifying remnants of satellite galaxies in the halo of our galaxy with Gaia data. The remnants have to be extracted from a very large data set (of order 10^9 stars) in the presence of observational errors and against a background population of Galactic stars. We address this issue through a numerical simulation of the Gaia catalogue with a realistic number of entries. The Galaxy model includes separate light distributions and kinematics for the bulge, disc and stellar halo. Our catalogue contains 3.5x10^8 stars. Astrometric Microlensing with the GAIA satellite

GAIA is the ``super-Hipparcos'' survey satellite selected as a Cornerstone 6 mission by the European Space Agency. GAIA can measure microlensing by the small excursions of the light centroid that occur during events. The all-sky source-averaged astrometric microlensing optical depth is about 10^{-5}. Detecting Halo Streams with GAIA

We investigate what the proposed ESA astrometric satellite GAIA will reveal by observing the halo of the Milky Way. Specifically, we look for halo streams which are the signatures left by the merging/accretion events experienced by a typical galaxy like the Milky Way. We run numerical simulations of the disruption of satellite galaxies in a Galactic potential to generate artificial GAIA halo catalogs. We recover the streams by searching for peaks in angular momentum space.

Mapping the substructure in the Galactic halo with the next generation of astrometric satellites

We run numerical simulations of the disruption of satellite galaxies in a Galactic potential to build up the entire stellar halo, in order to investigate what the next generation of astrometric satellites will reveal by observing the halo of the Milky Way. We generate artificial DIVA, FAME and GAIA halo catalogues, in which we look for the signatures left by the accreted satellites. A relativistic definition of the physically adequate proper reference system of a test observer is suggested within the framework of the PPN formalism. According to the nomenclature accepted within the GAIA project this reference system is called Center-of-Mass Reference System (CoMRS). Optimising GAIA: How do we meet the science challenge?

GAIA has been approved to provide the data needed to quantify the formation and evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy, and its near neighbours. Simulating Gaia performances on white dwarfs

One of the most promising space missions of ESA is the astrometric satellite Gaia, which will provide very precise astrometry and multicolour photometry, for all 1.3 billion objects to V~20, and radial velocities with accuracies of a few km/s for most stars brighter than V ~ 17. SB2 and eclipsing binaries with GAIA and RAVE

The expected performance of GAIA satellite on eclipsing binaries is reviewed on the basis of (a) combined Hipparcos and ground-based observations mimicking GAIA data harvest, and (b) accurate simulations using the latest instrument model. It is found that for a large majority of the 16000 SB2 eclipsing binaries that GAIA will discover at magnitudes V<13, the orbital solutions and physical parameters will be derived with formal accuracies better than 2%. Gaia Data Processing Architecture

Gaia is ESA's ambitious space astrometry mission the main objective of which is to astrometrically and spectro-photometrically map 1000 Million celestial objects (mostly in our galaxy) with unprecedented accuracy. Design of the Gaia photometric systems for stellar parametrization using a population-based optimizer

Large, deep surveys must typically rely on multiband photometry rather than spectroscopy for determining the astrophysical properties (APs) of stars.
