Model Spectra of Hot Subdwarfs for the Gaia Mission

The Gaia mission will provide an unprecedented 3D view of our galaxy, it will obtain astrometric, photometric and spectrographic data for roughly one billion stars. We are particularly interested in the treasure chest of new data Gaia will produce for hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars. In order for Gaia to classify sdBs and estimate parameters model spectra covering a wide parameter range are needed. Here we describe the construction of an extensive grid, which will be used for this purpose.

The Gaia mission. Pulsating stars with Gaia

Gaia is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) selected in 2000, with a target launch date of 2011. The Gaia Era: synergy between space missions and ground based surveys

The Gaia mission is expected to provide highly accurate astrometric, photometric, and spectroscopic measurements for about $10^9$ objects. Automated classification of detected sources is a key part of the data processing. Here a few aspects of the Gaia classification process are presented. Information from other surveys at longer wavelengths, and from follow-up ground based observations will be complementary to Gaia data especially at faint magnitudes, and will offer a great opportunity to understand our Galaxy.

Far-red spectroscopy of peculiar stars and the GAIA mission

The coming GAIA Cornerstone mission by ESA will provide micro-arcsec astrometry, 10 bands photometry and far-red spectroscopy for a huge number of stars in the Galaxy (10^9). GAIA spectroscopy will cover the range 8480--8740 Ang, which includes the CaII triplet and the head of the Paschen series. In this paper we address the diagnostic potential of this wavelength range toward detection and characterization of peculiar stars.

Grids of synthetic spectra for the GAIA mission

Two sets of grids of Kurucz ATLAS~9 model spectra are presented. The first one covers the GAIA spectral interval, while the second one which is still being computed covers the whole range from 2500 -- 10500 Å. Both grids include parameters needed for realistic spectral simulation, e.g. stellar rotation and are computed at R=20000 and lower spectral resolutions. They can be useful for preparation of the GAIA and RAVE missions and also for a general radial velocity correlation work

Spectroscopy, Photometry and Micro-arcsec Astrometry of Binaries with the GAIA Space Mission and with the RAVE Experiment

GAIA astrometric mission of ESA will be very efficient in discovering binary and multiple stars with any orbital period, from minutes to millions of years. Main parameters of the revised mission design are presented. Next we estimate the fraction of binary stars discovered by means of astrometry, photometry and on-board spectroscopy. Finally we summarize observations that confirm the ability to measure physical parameters like masses, radii and spectroscopic distance from GAIA data alone. The BaSeL library as a basic tool to provide fundamental stellar parameters of future space missions: COROT and GAIA

COROT and GAIA are two future major space missions directly connected to most of the stellar astrophysic questions, from stellar physics to evolution of galaxies. We describe a project for the preparation of these two missions by using the possibilities of the ``BaSeL'' models, a library of theoretical stellar energy distributions, to provide automatically the fundamental stellar parameters of the candidate stars. We present the results already obtained for the stars of the COROT main programme.

Predictions on the number of variable stars for the GAIA space mission and for surveys as the ground-based International Liquid Mirror Telescope

Future space and ground-based survey programmes will produce an impressive amount of photometric data. The GAIA space mission will map the complete sky down to mag V=20 and produce time series for about 1 billion stars. Survey instruments as the International Liquid Mirror Telescope will observe slices of the sky down to magnitude V=23. In both experiments, the opportunity exists to discover a huge amount of variable stars. A prediction of the expected total number of variable stars and the number of variables in specific subgroups is given.

From Detailed Galaxy Simulations to a Realistic End-of-Mission Gaia Catalogue

We address the problem of identifying remnants of satellite galaxies in the halo of our galaxy with Gaia data. We make use of N-body simulations of dwarf galaxies being disrupted in the halo of our galaxy combined with a Monte Carlo model of the Milky Way galaxy. The models are converted to a simulated Gaia catalogue containing a realistic number ($\sim10^8$--$10^9$) of stars. The simulated catalogue can be used to study how to handle the large data set that Gaia will provide and to study issues such as how to best retrieve information on substructure in the Galactic halo. New high resolution synthetic stellar libraries for the Gaia Mission

High resolution synthetic stellar libraries are of fundamental importance for the preparation of the Gaia Mission. We present new sets of spectral stellar libraries covering two spectral ranges: 300 --1100 nm at 0.1 nm resolution, and 840 -- 890 nm at 0.001 nm resolution. These libraries span a large range in atmospheric parameters, from super-metal-rich to very metal-poor (-5.0 $<$[Fe/H]$<$+1.0), from cool to hot (\teff=3000--50000 K) stars, including peculiar abundance variations. GAIA: Origin and Evolution of the Milky Way

GAIA is a short-listed candidate for the ESA Cornerstone mission C5, meeting the ESA Survey Committee requirement for an observatory mission, dedicated to astrometry, providing 10 micro-arcsecond accuracy at 15th magnitude. GAIA Galaxy Survey: a multi-colour galaxy survey with GAIA

The performance expected from a galaxy survey to be carried out with GAIA, the GAIA Galaxy Survey, is outlined. The visibility of the Galactic bulge in optical surveys. Application to the Gaia mission

The bulge is a region of the Galaxy which is of tremendous interest for understanding Galaxy formation. However, measuring photometry and kinematics in it raises several inherent issues, like high extinction in the visible and severe crowding. Gaia: Organisation and challenges for the data processing

Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. Simulating Gaia performances on white dwarfs
