The Gaia Era: synergy between space missions and ground based surveys

The Gaia mission is expected to provide highly accurate astrometric, photometric, and spectroscopic measurements for about $10^9$ objects. Automated classification of detected sources is a key part of the data processing. Here a few aspects of the Gaia classification process are presented. Information from other surveys at longer wavelengths, and from follow-up ground based observations will be complementary to Gaia data especially at faint magnitudes, and will offer a great opportunity to understand our Galaxy.

The Synergy of Gamma-Ray Burst Detectors in the GLAST Era

Simultaneous observations by the large number of gamma-ray burst detectors operating in the GLAST era will provide the spectra, lightcurves and locations necessary for studying burst physics and testing the putative relations between intrinsic burst properties. The detectors' energy band and the accumulation timescale of their trigger system affect their sensitivity to hard vs. soft and long vs. short bursts. Coordination of the Swift and GLAST observing plans consistent with Swift's other science objectives could increase the detection rate of GLAST bursts with redshifts.

Kinematics of the disk population in the GAIA era

GAIA data will create a precise 3-dimensional map of the Galaxy, providing positional information, radial velocities, luminosity, temperature and chemical composition of a representative sample of stars. Here we present a new implementation of the Padova Galaxy Model, where kinematics simulations are included. A few examples of application to GAIA science are discussed, in particular concerning radial velocities determinations of the thin and thick disk.

The Cepheid Instability Strip in the GAIA Era

We present recent results concerning distance determinations based on the two most popular primary distance indicators, namely classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae. We discuss the problems affecting the Cepheid distance scale, and in particular the dependence of fundamental Period-Luminosity (PL) and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations on the metal content. The key advantages in using the K-band PL relation of RR Lyrae stars when compared with the M_V vs [Fe/H] are also presented.

Asteroid occultations today and tomorrow: toward the GAIA era

Context: Observation of star occultations is a powerful tool to determine shapes and sizes of asteroids. This is key information necessary for studying the evolution of the asteroid belt and to calibrate indirect methods of size determination, such as the models used to analyze thermal infrared observations. Up to now, the observation of asteroid occultations is an activity essentially secured by amateur astronomers equipped with small, portable equipments. Jets, Blazars and the EBL in the GLAST-EXIST Era

The synergy of GLAST and the proposed EXIST mission as the Black Hole Finder Probe in the Beyond Einstein Program is remarkable. With its full-sky per orbit hard X-ray imaging (3-600 keV) and "nuFnu" sensitivity comparable to GLAST, EXIST could measure variability and spectra of Blazars in the hard X-ray synchrotron component simultaneous with GLAST (~10-100GeV) measures of the inverse Compton component, thereby uniquely constraining intrinsic source spectra and allowing measured high energy spectral breaks to measure the cosmic diffuse extra-galactic background light (EBL) by determining the …

Theoretical modelling of late-type giant atmospheres: preparing for Gaia

Late type giants (RGB/AGB stars) will be important tracers of the Galactic morphology and evolution in the framework of Gaia, as they are intrinsically bright and thus can probe distant stellar populations or those obscured by interstellar extinction.
