In this paper we study homotopy type of certain moduli spaces of metric graphs. More precisely, we show that the spaces $MG_{1,n}^v$, which parametrize the isometry classes of metric graphs of genus 1 with $n$ marks on vertices are homotopy equivalent to the spaces $TM_{1,n}$, which are the moduli spaces of tropical curves of genus 1 with $n$ marked points. Our proof proceeds by providing a sequence of explicit homotopies, with key role played by the so-called scanning homotopy. We conjecture that our result generalizes to the case of arbitrary genus.

Rational cohomology of the moduli space of genus 4 curves

We prove that the Poincare' polynomial of the moduli space of smooth genus 4 curves is 1+t^2+t^4+t^5. We show this by producing a stratification of the space, such that all strata are geometric quotients of complements of discriminants.

The orbifold cohomology of moduli of genus 3 curves

In this work we study the additive orbifold cohomology of the moduli stack of smooth genus g curves. We show that this problem reduces to investigating the rational cohomology of moduli spaces of cyclic covers of curves where the genus of the covering curve is g. Then we work out the case of genus g=3. Furthermore, we determine the part of the orbifold cohomology of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of genus 3 curves that comes from the Zariski closure of the inertia stack of M_3.

The Chen-Ruan cohomology of moduli of curves of genus 2 with marked points

In this work we describe the Chen-Ruan cohomology of the moduli stacks of smooth and stable genus 2 pointed curves, and its algebraic counterpart: the stringy Chow ring. In the first half of the paper we compute the additive structure of the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring for the moduli stack of stable pointed genus 2 curves, describing it as a rationally graded vector space. In the second part we give generators for the even Chen--Ruan cohomology ring as an algebra on the ordinary cohomology.

Chow groups of the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves of genus zero

The moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ of weighted pointed stable curves of genus zero is stratified according to the degeneration types of such curves. We show that the homology groups of the moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ are generated by the strata of $\bar{M}_A$ and give all additive relations between them. We also observe that the Chow groups $A_i \bar{M}_A$ and the homology groups $H_{2i} \bar{M}_A$ are isomorphic. This generalizes Kontsevich-Manin's and Losev-Manin's theorems to arbitrary weight data $A$.

Graph homology of moduli space of pointed real curves of genus zero

The moduli space $\bar{M}_S^σ(R)$ parameterizes the isomorphism classes of $S$-pointed stable real curves of genus zero which are invariant under relabeling by the involution $σ$. This moduli space is stratified according to the degeneration types of $σ$-invariant curves. The degeneration types of $σ$-invariant curves are encoded by their dual trees with additional decorations. We construct a combinatorial graph complex generated by the fundamental classes of strata of $\bar{M}_S^σ(R)$. Moduli spaces of tropical curves of higher genus with marked points and homotopy colimits

The main characters of this paper are the moduli spaces $TM_{g,n}$ of rational tropical curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points, with $g\geq 2$. We reduce the study of the homotopy type of these spaces to the analysis of compact spaces $X_{g,n}$, which in turn possess natural representations as a homotopy colimits of diagrams of topological spaces over combinatorially defined generalized simplicial complexes $Δ_g$, with the latter being interesting on their own right. Genus stabilization for moduli of curves with symmetries

The moduli space of stable n-pointed curves of genus zero

In this thesis I give a new description for the moduli space of stable n pointed curves of genus zero and explicitly specify a natural isomorphism and inverse between them that preserves many important properties. I also give a natural description for the universal curve of this space. These descriptions are explicit and defined in a straight forward way. I also compute the tangent bundle of this space. In the second part of the thesis I compute the ordinary integral cohomology ring from the above description and specify a basis for it.

Cyclic operad formality for compactified moduli spaces of genus zero surfaces

The framed little 2-discs operad is homotopy equivalent to the Kimura-Stasheff-Voronov cyclic operad of moduli spaces of genus zero stable curves with tangent rays at the marked points and nodes. We show that this cyclic operad is formal, meaning that its chains and its homology (the Batalin-Vilkovisky operad) are quasi-isomorphic cyclic operads. To prove this we introduce a new complex of graphs in which the differential is a combination of edge deletion and contraction, and we show that this complex resolves BV as a cyclic operad.
