We present high resolution (R=25,000-35,000) K-band spectroscopy of two young stars, MWC 480 and V1331 Cyg. Earlier spectrally dispersed (R=230) interferometric observations of MWC 480 indicated the presence of an excess continuum emission interior to the dust sublimation radius, with a spectral shape that was interpreted as evidence for hot water emission from the inner disk of MWC 480. Our spectrum of V1331 Cyg reveals strong emission from CO and hot water vapor, likely arising in a circumstellar disk. In comparison, our spectrum of MWC 480 appears mostly featureless. We discuss possible ways in which strong water emission from MWC 480 might go undetected in our data. If strong water emission is in fact absent from the inner disk, as our data suggest, the continuum excess interior to the dust sublimation radius that is detected in the interferometric data must have another origin. We discuss possible physical origins for the continuum excess.
UBVRI photometry observations of 10 symbiotic stars and related objects obtained in the period 2002-2003 are presented. Analysing differential light curves we found rapid light variations with timescales of tens of minutes and significant amplitudes in the well-known flickerers MWC 560, RS Oph, V407 Cyg and T CrB. MWC 560 and V407 Cyg demonstrate quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) with similar amplitudes and timescales. Flickering and unusual flare in V627 Cas as well as some indications of flickering presence in BX Mon are detected. The existence of 29 minutes oscillations in Z And with an amp…
MWC 560 and other peculiar symbiotic binary, CH Cyg, have been classified as the prototypes of the new subclass of symbiotic systems - propellers, with accretion onto a magnetic white dwarf being the source of activity. The companion of the hot component in this model should demonstrate stellar wind with relatively high mass-loss. It can be expected rather a late AGB, Mira or semiregular variable (SR) than any normal red giant. Our analysis performed for the I band shows that the M giant probably belongs to such kind of stars and pulsates with a period of about 5 months.
In papers I and II in this series, we presented hydrodynamical simulations of jet models with parameters representative of the symbiotic system MWC 560. These were simulations of a pulsed, initially underdense jet in a high density ambient medium. Since the pulsed emission of the jet creates internal shocks and since the jet velocity is very high, the jet bow shock and the internal shocks are heated to high temperatures and should therefore emit X-ray radiation. In this paper, we investigate in detail the X-ray properties of the jets in our models. We have focused our study on the total X-ray …
Rapidly spinning magnetic white dwarfs in symbiotic stars may pass through the propeller stage. It is believed that a magnetic propeller acts in two such stars CH Cyg and MWC 560. We review a diversity of manifestations of the propeller there. In these systems in a quiescent state the accretion onto a white dwarf from the strong enough wind of a companion star is suppressed by the magnetic field, and the hot component luminosity is low. Since the gas stored in the envelope eventually settles to the corotation radius the star-propeller reveals itself by long-time outbursts, short-time brightnes…
The star HDE 226868 known as an optical counterpart of the black hole candidate Cyg X-1 has been observed in H_alpha region using spectrograph at Ondrejov 2-m telescope. The orbital parameters are determined from HeI-line by means of the author's method of Fourier disentangling. Preliminary results are also presented of disentangling the H_alpha-line into a P-Cyg profile of the (optical) primary and an emission profile of the circumstellar matter (and a telluric component).
We present 1.4 to 2.5 um integral field spectroscopy of 16 stars in the Braid Nebula star formation region in Cygnus OB7. These data forms one aspect of a large-scale multi-wavelength survey aimed at determining an unbiased estimate of the number, mass distribution, and evolutionary state of the young stars within this one square degree area of the previously poorly studied Lynds 1003 molecular cloud. Our new spectroscopic data, when combined with 2MASS near-IR photometry, provide evidence of membership of many of these objects in the regions pre-main sequence population. We discuss both the c…
High-dispersion spectroscopic observations are used to refine orbital elements for the symbiotic binary CH Cyg. The current radial velocities, added to a previously published 13 year time series of infrared velocities for the M giant in the CH Cyg symbiotic system, more than double the length of the time series to 29 years. The two previously identified velocity periods are confirmed. The long period, revised to 15.6 +/- 0.1 yr, is shown to result from a binary orbit with a 0.7 solar mass white dwarf and 2 solar mass M giant. Mass transfer to the white dwarf is responsible for the symbiotic cl…
IC 2144 is a small reflection nebula located in the zone of avoidance near the Galactic anticenter. It has been investigated here largely on the basis of Keck/HIRES optical spectroscopy (R ~ 48,000) and a SpeX spectrogram in the near-IR (R = 2000) obtained at the NASA IRTF. The only star in the nebula that is obvious in the optical or near-IR is the peculiar emission-line object MWC 778 (V = 12.8), which resembles a T Tauri star in some respects. What appear to be F- or G-type absorption features are detectable in its optical region under the very complex emission line spectrum; their radial v…
For the first time, we obtained the high-resolution (R=15000 and 60000) optical spectra for the extremely luminous star No.12, associated with the IR-source IRAS20308+4104, a member of the CygOB2 association. We have found about 200 spectral features in range 4552-7939AA, including the interstellar NaI, KI lines and numerous DIBs, which are the strongest absorption lines in the spectrum, along with the HeI, CII, and SiII lines. A two-dimensional spectral classification indicates that the spectral type is B5+/-0.5 Ia+. Our analysis of the Vr data shows the presence of a Vr gradient in the stell…
We present a preliminary analysis of the 1--10 keV spectrum of the massive X-ray binary Cyg X-3, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The source reveals a richly detailed discrete emission spectrum, with clear signatures of photoionization-driven excitation. Among the spectroscopic novelties in the data are the first astrophysical detections of a number of He-like 'triplets' (Si, S, Ar) with emission line ratios characteristic of photoionization equilibrium, fully resolved narrow radiative recombination continua of Mg, Si, and S, the…
When planning new facilities, one is interested to know whether and by how much the new technique is superior to already existing ones. We describe a general approach permitting to evaluate the relative merits of various techniques used in astrophysical observations, following the theory of model parameter estimation. It is applied to compare two-aperture optical long baseline interferometry to classical spectroscopy, both used to define the model parameters of the P Cyg wind. The wind modeling was done using an efficient approximation for computation of the line source function; it allowed to…
Using the RXTE/PCA data we study the fast variability of the reflected emission in the soft spectral state of Cyg X-1 by means of Fourier frequency resolved spectroscopy. We find that the rms amplitude of variations of the reflected emission has the same frequency dependence as the primary radiation down to time scales of <30-50 msec. This might indicate that the reflected flux reproduces, with nearly flat response, variations of the primary emission. Such behavior differs notably from the hard spectral state, in which variations of the reflected flux are significantly suppressed in comparison…
We studied the frequency resolved energy spectra of Cyg X--1 during the standard low (hard) spectral state using the data of the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. We found that the relative amplitude of the reflection features -- the iron fluorescent line at ~6.5 keV and the smeared edge above ~7 keV -- decreases with the increasing frequency. In particular we found that the equivalent width of the iron line decreases above ~1 Hz and drops twice at frequency of ~10 Hz. An assumption that such behavior is solely due to a finite light crossing time of the reflecting media, would imply the characteris…
High-resolution spectroscopy was obtained of the FUors FU Ori and V1057 Cyg between 1995 and 2002 with SOFIN at NOT and with HIRES at Keck I. During those years FU Ori remained about 1 mag. (in B) below its 1938-39 maximum brightness, but V1057 Cyg (B ~ 10.5 at peak in 1970-71) faded from about 13.5 to 14.9 and then recovered slightly. Their photospheric spectra resemble a rotating G0 Ib supergiant, with v_eq sin i = 70 km/s for FU Ori and 55 km/s for V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg faded, P Cyg structure in Halpha and the IR CaII lines strengthened and a complex shortward-displaced shell spectrum inc…
We present time-resolved FUV spectra of the dwarf novae SS Cyg and WX Hyi in quiescence from observations using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on the Astro-1 and Astro-2 Space Shuttle missions and the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both dwarf novae are characterized by blue continua that extend to the Lyman limit punctuated by broad emission lines including transitions of O VI, N V, Si IV, and C IV. The continuum of WX Hyi can be fit with a white dwarf model with physically reasonable model parameters, but neither system actually shows unambiguous signat…
We present {\it Chandra} HETG observations of SS Cygni in quiescence and outburst. The spectra are characterized by He-like and H-like Ka emission lines from O to Fe, as well as L-shell emission lines from Fe. In quiescence, the spectra are dominated by the H-like Ka lines, whereas in outburst the He-like lines are as intense as the H-like lines. In outburst, the H-like Ka lines from O to Si are broad, with widths of 4--14 eV in Gaussian $σ$ (1800--2300$ {\rm km s^{-1}}$). The large line widths, together with line profiles, indicate that the line-emitting plasma is associated with the Kepleria…
We have performed simultaneous X-ray and optical spectroscopic observations of the Low Mass X-ray Binary Cygnus X-2. We have used a new data system attached to the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph instrument on Keck II to obtain spectra with a mean time resolution of 72.075 milliseconds, simultaneous with pointed X-ray observations using the PCA onboard XTE. In this paper, we have analysed the variability in both wavebands on timescales of 16 seconds. During our observations Cygnus X-2 covered all three branches of the Z-curve, allowing us to study how the changes in X-ray spectral state af…
In this paper we report on the first five out of eleven observations in our programme of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of old nova shells. We present new WFPC2 images of the shells around FH Ser and V533 Her taken in the F656N (Halpha+[NII]) filter. We also show long-slit spectra taken using the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) in La Palma for these objects in the same spectral range. The shell around FH Ser is found to be a prolate ellipsoid of ellipticity 1.3 +/- 0.1 inclined at 62 +/- 4 deg to the line of sight. The shell has an equatorial ring which is found to be due to increased e…
We have carried out a detailed analysis of the IUE archival high resolution spectra of the classical nova V1974 Cyg 1992. In addition to the P Cygni and emission lines, two shortward shifted absorption systems are present. Evidence is given that these absorptions originate in two separate expanding shells, outside the wind layers where the emission lines are formed. The outer main shell, containing most of the matter ejected at outburst, produces the so-called ``principal absorption line system'', and the inner faster moving second shell produces the so-called ``diffuse--enhanced absorption li…
We present spectroscopy and orbital periods Porb of four relatively little-studied cataclysmic variable stars. The stars and their periods are: AF Cam, Porb = 0.324(1) d (the daily cycle count is slightly ambiguous); V2069 Cyg (= RX J2123.7+4217), 0.311683(2) d; PG 0935+075, 0.1868(3) d; and KUV 03580+0614, 0.1495(6) d. V2069 Cyg and KUV 03580+0614 both show HeII lambda 4686 emission comparable in strength to H beta. V2069 Cyg appears to be a luminous novalike variable, and the strong HeII suggests it may be an intermediate polar. The period of KUV 03580+0614 is similar to members of the SW Se…
We present optical spectroscopy of nine cataclysmic binary stars, mostly dwarf novae, obtained primarily to determine orbital periods Porb. The stars and their periods are LX And, 0.1509743(5) d; CZ Aql, 0.2005(6) d; LU Cam, 0.1499686(4) d; GZ Cnc, 0.0881(4) d; V632 Cyg, 0.06377(8) d; V1006 Cyg, 0.09903(9) d; BF Eri, 0.2708804(4) d; BI Ori, 0.1915(5) d; and FO Per, for which Porb is either 0.1467(4) or 0.1719(5) d. Several of the stars proved to be especially interesting. In BF Eri, we detect the absorption spectrum of a secondary star of spectral type K3 +- 1 subclass, which leads to a distan…
We present a spectrophotometric study of short-term optical variability in the quiescent black hole X-ray transient V404 Cyg. This includes two nights of high time-resolution Halpha spectroscopy with which we resolve much of the time-variability, and a further six nights of archival spectroscopy with lower time-resolution but higher spectral-resolution. We find significant variability in most of the data considered, with both the Halpha line and the continuum often varying in a correlated way. This includes both dramatic flares lasting a few hours in which the line flux nearly doubles and lowe…
The preliminary results of a 1996 multisite campaign on the pulsating lambda Bootis star 29 Cyg are presented. This campaign, initiated by the Central Asian Network (CAN), allowed to collect data during 48 photometric and 2 spectroscopic nights at observatories of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Hungary, Canada and USA. The multiplicity of excited modes is confirmed in both spectroscopy and photometry. The analysis of all 1995 and 1996 data, combined with new CAN observations made in July-October 1997, is under way.
The Cygnus OB2 Association contains some of the most luminous OB stars in our Galaxy, the brightest of which are also among the most luminous in X-rays. We have obtained a Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observation centered on Cyg OB2 No. 8a, the most luminous X-ray source in the Association. Although our analysis will focus on the X-ray properties of Cyg OB2 No. 8a, we also present limited analyses of three other OB stars (Cyg OB2 Nos. 5, 9, and 12). Applying standard diagnostic techniques as used in previous studies of early-type stars, we find that the X-ray p…
We present results of the XMM-Newton observation on the bright X-ray binary Cyg X-2. In our analysis we focus upon the absorption and scattering of the X-ray emission by interstellar dust. The scattering halo around Cyg X-2, observed with the CCD detector EPIC-pn, is well detected up to ~7 arcmin and contributes ~5-7% to the total source emission at 1 keV, depending on the dust size distribution model considered. For the first time spatially resolved spectroscopy of a scattering halo is performed. In the halo spectrum we clearly detect the signature of the interstellar dust elements: O, Mg, an…
We present the results from the Fourier Resolved Spectroscopy of archival XMM-Newton data of five AGN, namely, Mrk 766, NGC 3516, NGC 3783, NGC 4051 and Ark 564. This work supplements the earlier study of MCG-6-30-15 as well as those of several Galactic Black Hole Candidate sources. Our results exhibit much larger diversity than those of Galactic sources, a fact we attribute to the diversity of their masses. When we take into account this effect and combine our results with those from Cyg X-1, it seems reasonable to conclude that, at high frequencies, the slope of the Fourier-resolved spectra …
Context: The main sequence binary star 61 Cyg (K5V+K7V) is our nearest stellar neighbour in the northern hemisphere. This proximity makes it a particularly well suited system for very high accuracy interferometric radius measurements. Aims: Our goal is to constrain the poorly known evolutionary status and age of this bright binary star. Methods: We obtained high accuracy interferometric observations in the infrared K' band, using the CHARA/FLUOR instrument. We then computed evolutionary models of 61 Cyg A & B with the CESAM2k code. As model constraints, we used a combination of observational p…
We present 0.8-5.2 micron spectroscopy of the compact source at the base of a variable nebula (McNeil's Nebula Object) in the Lynds 1630 dark cloud that went into outburst in late 2003. The spectrum of this object reveals an extremely red continuum, CO bands at 2.3-2.5 microns in emission, a deep 3.0 micron ice absorption feature, and a solid state CO absorption feature at 4.7 microns. In addition, emission lines of H, Ca II, Mg I, and Na I are present. The Paschen lines exhibit P Cygni profiles, as do two lines of He I, although the emission features are very weak in the latter. The Brackett …
BZ Cam is the first cataclysmic variable star with an accretion disk wind evident in its optical spectrum. The wind was found by Thorstensen, who discovered intermittent P Cygni profiles occurring simultaneously in He I 5876 Angstroms and H alpha. We have since obtained spectra with 0.4-Angstroms/pixel dispersion and 60-s time resolution. We find a wind much faster and more rapidly variable than the radiatively accelerated winds of OB stars, Wolf-Rayet stars, or luminous blue variables. Instead of showing blob ejection, the whole wind of BZ Cam appears to turn on and off. We use this to measur…
We present echelle long-slit optical spectra of a sample of objects evolving off the AGB, most of them in the pre-planetary nebula (pPN) phase, obtained with the ESI and MIKE spectrographs at Keck-II and Magellan-I, respectively. The total wavelength range covered with ESI (MIKE) is ~3900 to 10900 A (~3600 to 7200A). In this paper, we focus our analysis mainly on the Halpha profiles. Prominent Halpha emission is detected in half of the objects, most of which show broad Halpha wings (up to ~4000 km/s). In the majority of the Halpha-emission sources, fast, post-AGB winds are revealed by P-Cygni …
