We study vortex structure in a two-band superconductor, in which one band is ballistic and quasi-two-dimensional (2D), and the other is diffusive and three-dimensional (3D). A circular cell approximation of the vortex lattice within the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity is applied to a recently developed model appropriate for such a two-band system [Tanaka et al 2006 Phys. Rev. B 73, 220501(R); Tanaka et al 2007 Phys. Rev. B 75, 214512]. We assume that superconductivity in the 3D diffusive band is "weak", i.e., mostly induced, as is the case in MgB$_2$. Hybridization with the "weak" 3D diffusive band has significant and intriguing influence on the electronic structure of the "strong" 2D ballistic band. In particular, the Coulomb repulsion and the diffusivity in the "weak" band enhance suppression of the order parameter and enlargement of the vortex core by magnetic field in the "strong" band, resulting in reduced critical temperature and field. Moreover, increased diffusivity in the "weak" band can result in an upward curvature of the upper critical field near the transition temperature. A particularly interesting feature found in our model is the appearance of additional bound states at the gap edge in the "strong" ballistic band, which are absent in the single-band case. Furthermore, coupling with the "weak" diffusive band leads to reduced band gaps and van Hove singularities of energy bands of the vortex lattice in the "strong" ballistic band. We find these intriguing features for parameter values appropriate for MgB$_2$.
Abrikosov vortex melting in high-temperature superconductors of ErBa2Cu3O7-δ system is investigated using mechanical contactless method of energy dissipation.
We derive the exact modified London equation for the two-gap superconductor, compare it with its single-gap counterpart. We show that the vortices in the two-gap superconductor are soft (or continuous) core vortices. In particular, we discuss the topological structure of the finite energy vortices (Abrikosov-like vortices), and find that they can be viewed as the incarnation of the baby skyrmion stretched in the third direction. Besides, we point out that the knot soliton in the two-gap superconductor is the twisted Abrikosov-like vortex with its two periodic ends connected smoothly. The relat…
We establish the existence of topologically stable knot in two-gap superconductor whose topology $π_3(S^2)$ is fixed by the Chern-Simon index of the electromagnetic potential. We present a helical magnetic vortex solution in Ginzburg-Landau theory of two-gap superconductor which has a non-vanishing condensate at the core, and identify the knot as a twisted magnetic vortex ring made of the helical vortex. We discuss how the knot can be constructed in the recent two-gap $\rm MgB_2$ superconductor.
The voltage shift RfIc with respect to the flux flow ohmic behavior of the current-voltage characteristic in type II superconductors is ascribed to the irreversible processes occurring when a vortex crosses defects. We include irreversible effects of the vortices-defects interaction into an effective law of motion. The obtained current-voltage characteristic at finite temperature is in agreement with experimental data.
We show that periodic lattice of Abrikosov vortices in chiral $p$ wave superconductor in general supports fermionic states with zero energy provided the intervortex distance is smaller than the critical one. The zero modes appear at the intersection with the Fermi level of electronic magnetic Bloch bands formed by the overlapping vortex core states. The Bloch bands are robust against lattice disorder induced by fluctuations of vortex positions and can transmit the energy flow across the lattice. The hallmark of zero modes on Bloch bands in electronic heat conductivity is discussed.
We show that the strain-induced attraction between Abrikosov vortices has a non-core contribution overlooked up until now. This contribution is an example of the universal mechanism of soliton attraction in solids revealed in [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 66}, 14111 (2002)]. The resulting interaction energy is larger than that due to the vortex cores at least by a factor $\ln ^2 κ$. Consequently, the non-core contribution must be included, for instance, in discussions about the orientation of vortex lattices with respect to the crystal axes. It is shown to be also important when interpreting the thermal …
Mass of Abrikosov vortices defied experimental observation for more than four decades. We demonstrate a method of its detection in high-temperature superconductors. Similarly to electrons, fluxons circulate in the direction given by the magnetic field, causing circular dichroism. We report the magneto-transmittance of a nearly optimally doped thin YBaCuO film, measured using circularly polarized submillimeter waves. The circular dichroism emerges in the superconducting state and increases with dropping temperature. Our results confirm the dominant role of quasiparticle states in the vortex cor…
The self-energy of a moving vortex is shown do decrease with increasing velocity. The interaction energy of two parallel slowly moving vortices differs from the static case by a small term $\propto v^2$; the "slow" motion is defined as having the velocity $v<v_c =c^2/4πσλ$, where $σ(T)$ is conductivity of the normal excitations and $λ(T)$ is London penetration depth. For higher velocities, $v>v_c(T)$, the interaction energy of two vortices situated along the velocity direction is enhanced and along the perpendicular direction is suppressed compared to the static case.
In systems combining type-II superconductivity and magnetism the non-stationary magnetic field of moving Abrikosov vortices may excite spin waves, or magnons. This effect leads to the appearance of an additional damping force acting on the vortices. By solving the London and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations we calculate the magnetic moment induced force acting on vortices in ferromagnetic superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnet superlattices. If the vortices are driven by a dc force, magnon generation due to the Cherenkov resonance starts as the vortex velocity exceeds some threshold v…
We show that low-angle grain boundaries (GB) in high-temperature superconductors exhibit intermediate Abrikosov vortices with Josephson cores, whose length $l$ along GB is smaller that the London penetration depth, but larger than the coherence length. We found an exact solution for a periodic vortex structure moving along GB in a magnetic field $H$ and calculated the flux flow resistivity $R_F(H)$, and the nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. The predicted $R_F(H)$ dependence describes well our experimental data on $7^{\circ}$ unirradiated and irradiated $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ bicrystals, from …
Since the early 1960s, Abrikosov-Gorkov theory has been used to describe superconductors with paramagnetic impurities. Interestingly, the density of states resulting from the theoretical framework has to date only been known approximately, as a numeric solution of a complex polynomial. Here we introduce an exact analytic solution for the density of states of a superconductor with paramagnetic impurities. The solution is valid in the whole regime of Abrikosov-Gorkov theory; both where there is an energy gap and gapless. While of fundamental interest, we argue that this solution also has computa…
Theory alternative to the vortex lattice melting theories is advertised. The vortex lattice melting theories are science fiction cond-mat/9811051 because the Abrikosov state is not the vortex lattice with crystalline long-range order. Since the fluctuation correction to the Abrikosov solution is infinite in the thermodynamic limit (K.Maki and H.Takayama, 1972) any fluctuation theory of the mixed state should consider a superconductor with finite sizes. Such nonperturbative theory for the easiest case of two-dimensional superconductor in the lowest Landau level approximation is presented in thi…

We study the instability of the superconducting state in a mesoscopic geometry for the low pinning material Mo$_3$Ge characterized by a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter. We observe that in the current driven switching to the normal state from a nonlinear region of the Abrikosov flux flow, the mean critical vortex velocity reaches a limiting maximum velocity as a function of the applied magnetic field. Based on time dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations we argue that the observed behavior is due to the high velocity vortex dynamics confined on a mesoscopic scale. We build up a general phase diag…
We explore the possibility of using the inhomogeneous magnetic field carried by an Abrikosov vortex in a type-II superconductor to localize spin-polarized textures in a nearby magnetic semiconductor quantum well. We show how Zeeman-induced localization induced by a single vortex is indeed possible, and use these results to investigate the effect of a periodic vortex array on the transport properties of the magnetic semiconductor. In particular, we find an unconventional Integer Quantum Hall regime, and predict directly testable experimental consequences due to the presence of the periodic spin…
The resistive properties of thin amorphous NbO_{x} films with weak pinning were investigated experimentally above and below the second critical field H_{c2}. As opposed to bulk type II superconductors with weak pinning where a sharp change of resistive properties at the transition into the Abrikosov state is observed at H_{c4}, some percent below H_{c2} (V.A.Marchenko and A.V.Nikulov, 1981), no qualitative change of resistive properties is observed down to a very low magnetic field, H_{c4} < 0.006 H_{c2}, in thin films with weak pinning. The smooth dependencies of the resistivity observed in t…
We examine the question of thermal melting of the triangular Abrikosov vortex solid in two-dimensional superconductors or neutral superfluids. We introduce a model, which combines lowest Landau level (LLL) projection with the magnetic Wannier basis to represent degenerate eigenstates in the LLL. Solving the model numerically via large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we find clear evidence for a continuous melting transition, in perfect agreement with the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory and with recent experiments.
Using low-temperature Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) we provide direct experimental evidence for spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) formation in EuFe$_2$(As$_{0.79}$P$_{0.21}$)$_2$ single crystal with the superconducting $T^{\rm 0}_{\rm SC}=23.6$~K and ferromagnetic $T_{\rm FM}\sim17.7$~K transition temperatures. Spontaneous vortex-antivortex (V-AV) pairs are imaged in the vicinity of $T_{\rm FM}$. Also, upon cooling cycle near $T_{\rm FM}$ we observe the first-order transition from the short period domain structure, which appears in the Meissner state, into the long period domain structure with …
We study vortex charging caused by the Lorentz force on supercurrent based on the augmented quasiclassical equa- tions of superconductivity. Our numerical study on an s-wave vortex lattice in the range $H_{\rm{c}1} < H < H_{\rm{c}2}$ reveals that each vortex core with a single flux quantum also accumulates charge due to the circulating supercurrent and has a Hall voltage across the core. The field dependence of the charge density at the core center is well described by $H(H_{\rm{c}2}-H)$ with a peak near $H_{\rm{c}2}/2$ originating from competition between the increasing magnetic field and the…
Within the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we show that circularly polarized THz or far-infrared radiation induces a dc supercurrent that influences the dynamics of vortex-antivortex pair formation in a mesoscopic superconductor undergoing rapid thermal quenching. The Lorentz force arising from the supercurrents promotes vortex-antivortex separation and allows survival of the vortex polarity defined by the helicity of light. Based on this idea, we propose a two-stage irradiation scheme that provides a powerful method for controlled all-optical generation of Abrikosov vor…
We show that the Cooper pair wave function at the center of an Abrikosov vortex with vorticity m has different parity with respect to frequency from that in the bulk if m is an odd number and has the same parity if m is an even number. As a result, in a conventional vortex with m=1, the local density of states at the Fermi energy has a maximum (minimum) at the center of the vortex core in even(odd)-frequency superconductor. We propose a scanning tunneling microscope experiment using a superconducting tip to explore odd-frequency superconductivity.
We present an analysis of the magnetic field distribution in the Abrikosov lattice of high-$κ$ superconductors with singlet pairing in the case where the critical field is mainly determined by the Pauli limit and the superfluid currents partly come from the paramagnetic interaction of electron spins with the local magnetic field. The derivation is performed in the frame of the generalized Clem variational method which is valid not too close to the critical field and furthermore with the Abrikosov type theory in the vicinity of it. The found vortex lattice form factor increases with increasing …
We calculate the local density of states of a vortex in a two-dimensional s-wave superconductor, in the presence of a uniform applied supercurrent. The supercurrent induces changes in the electronic structure for the isolated vortex as well as the vortex lattice, which agree with the recent measurements in 2H-NbSe2 [Maldonado et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 064518 (2013)]. We find that the supercurrent polarizes the core states when the vortices are pinned. This shows that the transfer of momentum from the supercurrent to the bound states and the rigidity of the wave functions must be considered for …
We show that the two-gap superconductor has two types of non-Abrikosov magnetic vortex, the D-type which has no concentration of the condensate at the core and the N-type which has a non-vanishing concentration of the condensate at the core, which may carry $4π$-flux, $2π$-flux, or a fractional flux, depending on the parameters of the potential. Furthermore, we show that the non-Abrikosov vortex is described by two types of topology. The integer flux vortex has the non-Abelian topology $π_2(S^2)$, but the fractional flux vortex has the Abelian topology $π_1(S^1)$. We show that the inclusion of…
In superconductors penetrated by Abrikosov vortices the magnetic pressure and the inhomogeneous condensate density induce a deformation of the ionic lattice. We calculate how this deformation corrugates the surface of a semi-infinite sample. The effect of the surface dipole is included.
Abrikosov vortex lattice dynamics in a superconductor with weak defects is studied taking into account gyroscopic (Hall) properties. It is demonstrated that interaction of the moving lattice with weak defects results in appearance of the additional drag force, $F$, which is $F(V)\propto \sqrt V$ at small velocities, while at high velocities $F(V)\propto 1/\sqrt V$. Thus, the total drag force can be a nonmonotonic function of the lattice translational velocity. It leads to the velocity dependence of the Hall angle and a nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of the superconductor. Due to the …
After a brief introduction on nodal superconductors, we review the topological defects in triplet superconductors such as UPt$_{3}$, Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, etc. This is in part motivated by the surprising discovery of Ana Celia Mota and her colleagues that in some triplet superconductors the flux motion is completely impeded (the ideal pinning). Among topological defects the most prominent is Abrikosov's vortex with quantum flux $ϕ_{0}= \frac{hc}{2e}$. Abrikosov's vortex is universal and ubiquitous and seen in both conventional and unconventional superconductors by the Bitter decoration technique,…
The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can emerge in superconductors for which the orbital critical field exceeds the Pauli limit. Here, we present angular-resolved specific-heat data of the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$, with a focus on high fields in the regime of the FFLO transition. For an increasing out-of-plane tilt of the applied magnetic field, which leads to an increase of orbital contributions, we found that the nature of the superconducting transition changes from second to first order and that a further transition appears within the…
The melting of the Abrikosov vortex lattice in a 2D type-II superconductor at high magnetic fields is studied analytically within the framework of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory. It is shown that local phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter, associated with low energies sliding motions of Bragg chains along the principal crystallographic axes of the vortex lattice, lead to a weak first order 'melting' transition at a certain temperature $T_{m}$, well below the mean field $T_{c\text{}}$, where the shear modulus drops abruptly to a nonzero value. The residual shea…
Study of the Abrikosov vortex motion in superconductors based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations reveals an opportunity to locally detect the values of the Aharonov-Bohm type curl-less vector potentials.
The electronic structure of a vortex line trapped by a planar defect in a type-II superconductor is analyzed within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. The normal reflection of electrons and holes at the defect plane results in the topological transition in the spectrum and formation of a new type of quasiparticle states skipping or gliding along the defect. This topological transition appears to be a hallmark of the initial stage of the crossover from the Abrikosov to the Josephson vortex type revealing in the specific behavior of the quantized quasiparticle levels and density of states. The inc…
At the surface of a d-wave superconductor, a zero-energy peak in the quasiparticle spectrum can be observed. This peak appears due to Andreev bound states and is maximal if the nodal direction of the d-wave pairing potential is perpendicular to the boundary. We examine the effect of a single Abrikosov vortex in front of a reflecting boundary on the zero-energy density of states. We can clearly see a splitting of the low-energy peak and therefore a suppression of the zero-energy density of states in a shadow-like region extending from the vortex to the boundary. This effect is stable for differ…
It is used the mechanical method of Abrikosov vortex stimulated dynamics investigation in superconductors. With its help it was studied relaxation phenomena in vortex matter of high-temperature superconductors. It established that pulsed magnetic fields change the course of relaxation processes taking place in vortex matter. The study of the influence of magnetic pulses differing by their durations and amplitudes on vortex system of strongly anisotropic high-temperature superconductors system Bi1.7Pb0.3Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-d showed the presence of threshold phenomena. The small duration pulses do not …
We introduce a random matrix ensemble for bulk type-II superconductors in the mixed state and determine the single-particle excitation spectrum using random matrix theory. The results are compared with planar tunnel junction experiments in PbBi thin films. More low energy states appear than in the Abrikosov-Gor'kov-Maki or Ginzburg-Landau descriptions, consistent with observations.
We numerically investigate the phenomenological nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian for two-dimensional superconductors in a strong magnetic field by Langevin equation. We obtain a regular vortex lattice which is very near to the square lattice. We calculate the structure factor and Abrikosov factor at various temperatures. We also evaluate the specific heat and obtain a cusp which indicates the melting of the vortex lattice.
Numerical calculations on a mesoscopic ring of a type II superconductor in the London limit suggest that an Abrikosov vortex can be trapped in such a structure above a critical magnetic field and generate a phase shift in the magnetoresistance oscillations. We prepared submicron-sized superconducting loops of single-crystal, type II superconductor NbSe$_2$ and measured magnetoresistance oscillations resulting from vortices crossing the loops. The free energy barrier for vortex crossing determines the crossing rate and is periodically modulated by the external magnetic flux threading the loop. …
We show that Abrikosov vortices moving towards the surface of a superconductor emit electromagnetic radiation into free space. The frequency distribution of the radiated intensity displays a pronounced maximum at microwave frequencies around v_x/lambda, where lambda is the magnetic penetration length. Coherent motion of a lattice of flux lines leads to constructive interference and increases the strength of the radiated power by a large factor.
We study the subgap spectrum of a 2D Abrikosov vortex in an s-wave superconductor in the absence and presence of a point impurity. By solving the Eilenberger equations without impurity for two models of the vortex (including a self-consistent one), we find multiple subgap spectral branches. The number of these branches may be arbitrary large provided that the magnetic field screening length is large enough. The quasiclassical spectrum of the vortex has a local gap with a width of the order of the bulk gap and a spatial extent of several coherence lengths. The existence of such gap is the prere…
Superconductivity was observed in certain range of pressure and chemical composition in Weyl semi-metals of both the type I and type II (when the Dirac cone tilt parameter $κ>1$). Magnetic properties of these superconductors are studied on the basis of microscopic phonon mediated pairing model. The Ginzburg - Landau effective theory for the order parameter is derived using Gorkov approach and used to determine anisotropic coherence length, the penetration depth determining the Abrikosov parameter for a layered material and applied to recent extensive experiments on $% MoTe_{2}$. It is found th…
The concept of the transition of type II superconductor into the Abrikosov state as the appearance of long-range phase coherence is considered. It is shown that this transition should be first order in ideal (without disorder) superconductor. Such transition is indeed observed in bulk superconductors with weak disorder at a field Hc4 < Hc2. No experimental evidence of the vortex lattice melting exists now. It is shown that this popular concept has appeared on a consequence of an incorrect interpretation of the Abrikosov state and incorrect definition of the phase coherence. The absence of a sh…
The formalism for analysing the magnetic field distribution in Pauli limited superconductors developed earlier is applied to the field dependence of the vortex lattice static linewidth measured in Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) experiments. In addition to writing analytical formulae for the static linewidth for the vortex structure in the limit of independent vortices (i.e. moderate magnetic fields), we use Abrikosov's analysis to describe the field variations of the static linewidth at the approach of the superconductor to metal transition in the limit where the critical field is determined by Pa…
Abrikosov-Gor'kov (AG) theory, the foundation for understanding pair-breaking effects in conventional superconductors, is inadequate when there is an excitation gap (pseudogap) present at the onset of superconductivity. In this paper we present an extension of AG theory within two important, and diametrically opposite approaches to the cuprate pseudogap. The effects of impurities on the pseudogap onset temperature T* and on Tc, along with comparisons to experiment are addressed.
We investigate numerically the signatures of collective modes in the tunneling spectra of superconductors. The larger strength of the signatures observed in the high-Tc superconductors, as compared to classical low-Tc materials, is explained by the low dimensionality of these layered compounds. We also show that the strong-coupling structures are dips (zeros in the d2I/dV2 spectrum) in d-wave superconductors, rather than the steps (peaks in d2I/dV2) observed in classical s-wave superconductors. Finally we question the usefulness of effective density of states models for the analysis of tunneli…
The zero-bias conductance peak in d-wave superconductors splits in an applied magnetic field. In this work, the experimentally observed universal relation delta ~ B0^(1/2) for strip-shaped samples is derived analytically based on the long-ranged current contributions from Abrikosov vortices inside the sample. The result is in full agreement with observed key properties, and features such as hysteresis effects are made accessible. Employing a magnetically induced additional order parameter is not necessary for the physical explanation of the universal relation.
The effect of fluctuations on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate, $W$, is studied in a complete phase diagram of a 2D superconductor above the upper critical field line $H_{c2}(T)$ . In the region of relatively high temperatures and low magnetic fields, the relaxation rate $W$ is determined by two competing effects. The first one is its decrease in result of suppression of quasi-particle density of states (DOS) due to formation of fluctuation Cooper pairs (FCP). The second one is a specific, purely quantum, relaxation process of the Maki-Thompson (MT) type, which for low fiel…
Scanning $μ$SQUID force microscopy is used to study magnetic flux structures in single crystals of the layered spin triplet superconductor Sr$\_{2}$RuO$\_{4}$. Images of the magnetic flux configuration above the $\vec{a}\vec{b}$-face of the cleaved crystal are acquired, mostly after field-cooling the sample. For low applied magnetic fields, individual vortices are observed, each carrying a single quantum of flux. Above 1 gauss, coalescence of vortices is discovered. The coalescing vortices may indicate the presence of domains of a chiral order parameter. When the applied field is tilted from t…
Enhancement of flux pinning by magnetic nanoparticles embedded into the bulk of type-2 superconductor is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Magnetic part of the pinning force associated with the interaction between a spherical magnetic inclusion and an Abrikosov vortex was calculated in the London approximation. Calculations are supported by the experimental results obtained on sonochemically modified MgB2 superconductor with embedded magnetic Fe2O3 nanoparticles and compared to MgB2 with nonmagnetic Mo2O5 pinning centers of similar concentration and particle size distribution. It …
The first integrals of the Ginzburg-Landau equations for a vortex-free state of superconductors with different mixed symmetries of the order parameter are found. The general boundary conditions for the order parameter at the ideal interface between the superconductor and vacuum are derived. Based on these integrals and boundary conditions, we analyze the stability criteria for vortex-free state in unconventional superconductors. The threshold field above which the Abrikosov vortices can enter the superconductor is found to be higher or equal to the thermodynamic critical field for all states u…
Magnetic response is a fundamental property of superconducting materials, which helps to distinguish two superconductivity types: the ideally diamagnetic type I and type II, which can develop the mixed state with Abrikosov vortices. We demonstrate that multi-band superconductors with one shallow band, that have recently attracted much attention for their high critical temperatures and unusual properties, often stay apart of this simple classification. In a wide range of microscopic parameters such systems fall into the inter-type or transitional interval in between the standard types and displ…

Based on a simple model of a layered superconductor with strong attractive interaction, we find that the separation of the pair-condensation temperature from the pair-formation temperature becomes more remarkable as the interlayer hopping gets smaller. We propose from this result the BCS-BEC crossover induced by the change in dimensionality, for instance, due to insertion of additional insulating layers or application of uniaxial pressure. The emergence of a pseudogap in the electronic density of states, which supports the idea of the dimensionality-induced BCS-BEC crossover, is also verified.
We consider excited vortex states, which are vortex states left inside a superconductor once the external applied magnetic field is switched off and whose energy is lower than of the normal state. We show that this state is paramagnetic and develop here a general method to obtain its Gibbs free energy through conformal mapping. The solution for any number of vortices in any cross section geometry can be read off from the Schwarz - Christoffel mapping. The method is based on the first order equations used by A. Abrikosov to discover vortices.
By using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we show that extremely diverse experimental data on flux-flow resistivity in multiband superconductors can be qualitatively explained by a composite nature of Abrikosov vortices consisting of elementary fractional vortices in different bands. In composite vortices, the ratio of a core size to electric field relaxation length is found to vary in wide limits depending on system parameters. As a result, the flux-flow magneto-resistance can strongly exceed the single-component Bardeen-Stephen estimation provided that moving vortices generate elec…
