We investigate N=(2,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models in the presence of a boundary. We restrict our attention to the case where the bulk geometry is described by chiral and twisted chiral superfields corresponding to a bihermitian bulk geometry with two commuting complex structures. The D-brane configurations preserving an N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry are identified. Duality transformations interchanging chiral for twisted chiral fields and vice versa while preserving all supersymmetries are explicitly constructed. We illustrate our results with various explicit examples such as the WZW-model on the Hopf surface S3xS1. The duality transformations provide e.g new examples of coisotropic A-branes on Kahler manifolds (which are not necessarily hyper-Kahler). Finally, by dualizing a chiral and a twisted chiral field to a semi-chiral multiplet, we initiate the study of D-branes in bihermitian geometries where the cokernel of the commutator of the complex structures is non-empty.
We complete the investigation of N=(2,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models in the presence of a boundary. We study the full bihermitian geometry parameterized by chiral, twisted chiral and semi-chiral superfields and identify the D-brane configurations preserving an N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry. Combining twisted with semi-chiral superfields leads to a clearly defined notion of lagrangian and coisotropic branes generalizing lagrangian and coisotropic A-branes on Kahler manifolds to manifolds which are not necessarily Kahler (but still bihermitian). Adding chiral fields complicates the pict…
BiHermitian geometry, discovered long ago by Gates, Hull and Rocek, is the most general sigma model target space geometry allowing for (2,2) world sheet supersymmetry. In this paper, we work out supersymmetric quantum mechanics for a biHermitian target space. We display the full supersymmetry of the model and illustrate in detail its quantization procedure. Finally, we show that the quantized model reproduces the Hodge theory for compact twisted generalized Kaehler manifolds recently developed by Gualtieri. This allows us to recover and put in a broader context the results on the biHermitian t…
We study the worldsheet scattering theory of the $η$ deformation of the AdS$_\mathsf{5} \times $S$^\mathsf{5}$ superstring corresponding to the purely fermionic Dynkin diagram. This theory is a Weyl-invariant integrable deformation of the AdS$_\mathsf{5} \times $S$^\mathsf{5}$ superstring, with trigonometric quantum-deformed symmetry. We compute the two-body worldsheet S matrix of this string in the light-cone gauge at tree level to quadratic order in fermions. The result factorizes into two elementary blocks, and solves the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We also determine the corresponding e…
We show that twisted doubled tori can be used to construct a general class of worldsheet models describing non-geometric string backgrounds. By employing a first order formulation of interacting chiral bosons, we first refine the analysis on the general conditions of worldsheet Lorentz invariance and then prove that twisted doubled tori provide good duality symmetric backgrounds. Subsequently we apply our general analysis to several examples which enable us to gain new insight on the difference between geometric, locally geometric and genuine non-geometric backgrounds.
We consider integrable field theories with achiral boundary conditions and uncover the underlying achiral twisted Yangian algebra. This construction arises from old work on the bosonic principal chiral model on a half-line, but finds a modern realization as the hidden symmetry in the planar limit of the scattering of worldsheet excitations of the AdS/CFT light-cone superstring off a D5-brane.
In this work we attempt to bridge the gap between heterotic orbifold models and Calabi-Yau compactifications using gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) with (2,0) worldsheet supersymmetry. We associate a specific GLSM to a heterotic orbifold model with twisted states that have non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs): The charges of the GLSM superfields are essentially determined by the shifted momenta of these states. When a twisted state contains an oscillator excitation, a fermionic gauging is introduced on the worldsheet inducing a non-Abelian gauge bundle, e.g. the standard embedding.…
We take a worldsheet point of view on the relation between Ramond-Ramond charges, invariants of boundary renormalization group flows and K-theory. In compact super Wess-Zumino-Witten models, we show how to associate invariants of the generalized Kondo renormalization group flows to a given supersymmetric boundary state. The procedure involved is reminiscent of the way one can probe the Ramond-Ramond charge carried by a D-brane in conformal field theory, and the set of these invariants is isomorphic to the twisted K-theory of the Lie group. We construct various supersymmetric boundary states, a…
On any Calabi-Yau manifold X one can define a certain sheaf of chiral N=2 superconformal field theories, known as the chiral de Rham complex of X. It depends only on the complex structure of X, and its local structure is described by a simple free field theory. We show that the cohomology of this sheaf can be identified with the infinite-volume limit of the half-twisted sigma-model defined by E. Witten more than a decade ago. We also show that the correlators of the half-twisted model are independent of the Kahler moduli to all orders in worldsheet perturbation theory, and that the relation to…
In this paper we use trivial defects to define global taffy-like operations on string worldsheets, which preserve the field theory. We fold open and closed strings on a space X into open strings on products of multiple copies of X, and perform checks that the "taffy-folded" worldsheets have the same massless spectra and other properties as the original worldsheets. Such folding tricks are a standard method in the defects community; the novelty of this paper lies in deriving mathematical identities to check that e.g. massless spectra are invariant in topological field theories. We discuss the c…
Worldsheet string theory compactified on exceptional holomony manifolds is revisited following arXiv:1809.06376, where aspects of the chiral symmetry were described for the case where the compact space is a 7-dimensional G$_2$-holonomy manifold constructed as a Twisted Connected Sum. We reinterpret this result and extend it to Extra Twisted Connected Sum G$_2$-manifolds, and to 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum Spin(7)-manifolds. Automorphisms of the latter construction lead us to conjecture new mirror maps.
We derive and analyze the conditions for quantum conformal and Lorentz invariance of the duality symmetric interacting chiral boson sigma-models, which are conjectured to describe non-geometric string theory backgrounds. The one-loop Weyl and Lorentz anomalies are computed for the general case using the background field method. Subsequently, our results are applied to a class of (on-shell) Lorentz invariant chiral boson models which are based on twisted doubled tori. Our findings are in agreement with those expected from the effective supergravity approach, thereby firmly establishing that the…
We calculate couplings of arbitrary order from correlation functions among twisted strings, using conformal field theory. Twisted strings arise in heterotic string compactified on orbifolds yielding matter fields in the low energy limit. We calculate completely the classical and the quantum amplitude including normalization, up to a contribution from Kahler potential. The classical action has saddle points which are interpreted as worldsheet instantons described by metastable untwisted strings, formed by twisted strings distributed at certain fixed points. This understanding generalizes the ar…
M(atrix) theory on an orbifold and classical two-branes therein are studied with particular emphasis to heterotic M(atrix) theory on $S_1/Z_2$ relevant to strongly coupled heterotic and dual Type IA string theories. By analyzing orbifold condition on Chan-Paton factors, we show that three choice of gauge group are possible for heterotic M(atrix) theory: SO(2N), SO(2N+1) or USp(2N). By examining area-preserving diffeomorphism that underlies the M(atrix) theory, we find that each choices of gauge group restricts possible topologies of two-branes. The result suggests that only the choice of SO(2N…
We address the issue of the worldsheet and spacetime covariant formulation for matrix strings. The problem is solved in the limit of vanishing string coupling. To go beyond the g_s = 0 limit, we propose a topological quantum field theory as a twisted candidate. Our model involves the generalized octonionic or SU(4) instanton equations defined in eight dimensions for a supersymmetric U(N) Yang--Mills field living on a special holonomy manifold. The question of untwisting this matrix model into an anomaly free theory enlightens the need for an "extended" 2d-gravity sector, that we suggest could …
The two-loop chiral measure for superstring theories compactified on $\bZ_2$ reflection orbifolds is constructed from first principles for even spin structures. This is achieved by a careful implementation of the chiral splitting procedure in the twisted sectors and the identification of a subtle worldsheet supersymmetric and supermoduli dependent shift in the Prym period. The construction is generalized to compactifications which involve more general NS backgrounds preserving worldsheet supersymmetry. The measures are unambiguous and independent of the gauge slice. Two applications are presen…
An action for the ten-dimensional Green-Schwarz superstring with N=2 worldsheet superconformal invariance has recently been used to calculate superstring scattering amplitudes and prove their finiteness. In this paper, it is shown that the N=2 stress-energy tensor for this Green-Schwarz action can be constructed out of the stress-energy tensor and ghosts of the Neveu- Schwarz-Ramond action by the standard twisting procedure. In other words, a field redefinition is found from the GS matter fields into the NSR matter and ghost fields which transforms the matter part of the two fermionic GS super…
In this thesis we study string compactifications on manifolds equipped with a $G$-structure, placing a special emphasis on the interplay between geometry and physics. We follow two complementary approaches. In the first part of the thesis we adopt a sigma model perspective and focus on the worldsheet superconformal field theory. We consider compactifications on 7-dimensional Extra Twisted Connected Sum (ETCS) G$_2$ manifolds as well as 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum (GCS) Spin(7) manifolds. We find that the geometric construction is reproduced in the worldsheet algebra via a diamond o…
The problem of constructing twisted modules for a vertex operator algebra and an automorphism has been solved in particular in two contexts. One of these two constructions is that initiated by the third author in the case of a lattice vertex operator algebra and an automorphism arising from an arbitrary lattice isometry. This construction, from a physical point of view, is related to the space-time geometry associated with the lattice in the sense of string theory. The other construction is due to the first author, jointly with C. Dong and G. Mason, in the case of a multi-fold tensor product o…
We establish a double dualization in two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory. We construct a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) which contains a complex twisted linear superfield coupled to two sets of Abelian vector superfields. In the IR regime, the GLSM provides a string sigma model whose target spaces are a defect NS5-brane, a Kaluza-Klein vortex and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. All of them are five-branes of codimension two and are related by T-duality. This model is a natural extension of the GLSM proposed by Tong which gives a sigma model for an H-monopole, i.e., a smeared NS5-brane of co…
We discuss how gerbes may be used to set up a consistent Lagrangian approach to the WZW models with boundary. The approach permits to study in detail possible boundary conditions that restrict the values of the fields on the worldsheet boundary to brane submanifolds in the target group. Such submanifolds are equipped with an additional geometric structure that is summarized in the notion of a gerbe module and includes a twisted Chan-Paton gauge field. Using the geometric approach, we present a complete classification of the branes that conserve the diagonal current-algebra symmetry in the WZW …
This expository paper describes sewing conditions in two-dimensional open/closed topological field theory. We include a description of the G-equivariant case, where G is a finite group. We determine the category of boundary conditions in the case that the closed string algebra is semisimple. In this case we find that sewing constraints -- the most primitive form of worldsheet locality -- already imply that D-branes are (G-twisted) vector bundles on spacetime. We comment on extensions to cochain-valued theories and various applications. Finally, we give uniform proofs of all relevant sewing the…
We find the orbifold analog of the topological relation recently found by Freed and Witten which restricts the allowed D-brane configurations of Type II vacua with a topologically non-trivial flat $B$-field. The result relies in Douglas proposal -- which we derive from worldsheet consistency conditions -- of embedding projective representations on open string Chan-Paton factors when considering orbifolds with discrete torsion. The orbifold action on open strings gives a natural definition of the algebraic K-theory group -- using twisted cross products -- responsible for measuring Ramond-Ramond…
We study global worldsheet anomalies for open strings ending on several coincident D-branes in the presence of a B-field. We show that cancellation of anomalies is made possible by a correlation between the t'Hooft magnetic flux on the D-branes and the topological class of the B-field. One application of our results is a proper understanding of the geometric nature of the gauge field living on D-branes: rather than being a connection on a vector bundle, it is a connection on a module over a certain noncommutative algebra. Our argument works for a general closed string background. We also expla…
This is the second in a series of papers discussing in the framework of gerbe theory canonical and geometric aspects of the 2d nonlinear sigma model in the presence of conformal defects in the worldsheet. Employing the formal tools worked out in the first paper of the series, 1101.1126 [hep-th], a thorough analysis of rigid symmetries of the sigma model is carried out with emphasis on algebraic structures on generalised tangent bundles over the target space of the theory and over its state space that give rise to a realisation of the symmetry algebra on states. The analysis leads to a proposal…
We consider the worldsheet boundary scattering and the corresponding boundary algebras for the Z=0 giant graviton and the Z=0 D7-brane in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider two approaches to the boundary scattering, the usual one governed by the (generalized) twisted Yangians and the q-deformed model of these boundaries governed by the quantum affine coideal subalgebras. We show that the q-deformed approach leads to boundary algebras that are of a more compact form than the corresponding twisted Yangians, and thus are favourable to use for explicit calculations. We obtain the q-deformed r…
