A single Co atom adsorbed on Cu(111) or on ferromagnetic Co islands is contacted with non-magnetic W or ferromagnetic Ni tips in a scanning tunneling microscope. When the Co atom bridges two non-magnetic electrodes conductances of 2e^2/h are found. With two ferromagnetic electrodes a conductance of e^2/h is observed which may indicate fully spin-polarized transport.
Memory devices based on resistive switching (RS) have not been fully realised due to lack of understanding of the underlying switching mechanisms. Nature of ion transport responsible for switching and growth of conducting filament in transition metal oxide based RS devices is still in debate. Here, we investigated the mechanism in Niobium oxide based RS devices, which shows unipolar switching with high ON/OFF ratio, good endurance cycles and high retention times. We controlled the boundary conditions between low-conductance insulating and a high-conductance metallic state where conducting fila…
The universal features of quantized thermal conductance of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are revealed through theoretical analysis based on the Landauer theory of heat transport. The phonon-derived thermal conductance of semiconducting CNTs exhibits a universal quantization in the low temperature limit, independent of the radius or atomic geometry. The temperature dependence follows a single curve given in terms of temperature scaled by the phonon energy gap. The thermal conductance of metallic CNTs has an additional contribution from electronic states, which also exhibits quantized behavior up to r…
A detailed understanding of quantization conductance (QC), their correlation with resistive switching phenomena and controlled manipulation of quantized states is crucial for realizing atomic-scale multilevel memory elements. Here, we demonstrate highly stable and reproducible quantized conductance states (QC-states) in Al/Niobium oxide/Pt resistive switching devices. Three levels of control over the QC-states, required for multilevel quantized state memories, like, switching ON to different quantized states, switching OFF from quantized states, and controlled inter-state switching among one Q…
We calculate the quantized conductance of nanosize point contacts between two ferromagnets for different mutual orientations of the magnetic moments. It is found that the magnetoresistance MR is a multivalued function of the quantized conductance at the parallel alignment of the magnetizations sigma^F. This leads us to the conclusion that experimentally observed large fluctuations of MR versus sigma^F are rather due to the conductance quantization than to measurement errors or a poor reproducibility of the results. Using the results of the calculations we are able to understand experimental da…
We report experiments that demonstrate the quantization of the conductance of photonic crystal waveguides. To obtain a diffusive wave, we have added all the transmitted channels for all the incident angles. The conductance steps have equal height and a width of one half the wavelength used. Detailed numerical results agree very well with the novel experimental results.
Silicene (a monolayer of silicon atoms) is a quantum spin-Hall insulator, which undergoes a topological phase transition into other insulators by applying external field such as electric field, photo-irradiation and antiferromagnetic order. We investigate the electronic and transport properties of silicene nanoribbons based on the Landauer formalism. We propose to determine topological phase transitions by measuring the density of states and conductance. The conductance is quantized and changes its value when the system transforms into different phases. We show that a silicene nanoribbon near …
We report a new template electroplating method for fabricating reversible atomic contacts between a single nanowire and a macroscopic contact pad. In comparison to typical template methods using a standing-alone anode, we directly evaporate the anode on one of the porous membrane surfaces. Single nanowires, upon emerging from the pores, make reversible atomic contacts with the on-membrane anode via a self-terminating mechanism. Quantized conductance steps have been observed in a controlled fashion during deposition and dissolution. This method can potentially be applied for the controlled fabr…
A quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator coupled to an s-wave superconductor is predicted to harbor a topological superconducting phase, the elementary excitations of which (i.e. Majorana fermions) can form topological qubits upon non-Abelian braiding operations. A recent transport experiment interprets the half-quantized two-terminal conductance plateau as the presence of chiral Majorana fermions in a millimeter-size QAH-Nb hybrid structure. However, there are concerns about this interpretation because non-Majorana mechanisms can also generate similar signatures, especially in a disordered QA…
By studying the time-dependent axial and radial growth of InSb nanowires, we map the conditions for the synthesis of single-crystalline InSb nanocrosses by molecular beam epitaxy. Low-temperature electrical measurements of InSb nanocross devices with local gate control on individual terminals exhibit quantized conductance and are used to probe the spatial distribution of the conducting channels. Tuning to a situation where the nanocross junction is connected by few-channel quantum point contacts in the connecting nanowire terminals, we show that transport through the junction is ballistic exce…
The Majorana zero mode (MZM), which manifests as an exotic neutral excitation in superconductors, is the building block of topological quantum computing. It has recently been found in the vortices of several iron-based superconductors as a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in tunneling spectroscopy. In particular, a clean and robust MZM has been observed in the cores of free vortices in (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFeSe. Here using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we demonstrate that Majorana-induced resonant Andreev reflection occurs between the STM tip and this zero-bias bound state, and consequent…
Electrical conductance through various nanocontacts between gold electrodes is studied by using the density functional theory, scalar-relativistic pseudopotentials, generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation energy and the recursion-transfer-matrix method along with channel decomposition. The nanocontact is modeled with pyramidal fcc(100) tips and 1 to 5 gold atoms between the tips. Upon elongation of the contact by adding gold atoms between the tips, the conductance at Fermi energy E_F evolves from G ~ 3 G_0 to G ~ 1 G_0 (G_0 = 2e/h^2). Formation of a true one-atom point …
The quantum Hall effect in a 2D electron system expresses a topological invariant, leading to a quantized conductivity. The thermal Hall and thermoelectric Nernst conductances in two dimensions are also reported to be quantized in specific systems. However, a comprehensive study of these quantities within one formalism for quantum Hall systems is so far elusive. In this work, we investigate the Hall, thermal Hall, and Nernst effects analytically and numerically in 2D and 3D. In addition to the quantized values for the Hall and thermal Hall conductances in two dimensions, we also find quasi-qua…
Room temperature conductance-elongation curves of gold atomic wires are measured using a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope Break Junction technique. Landauer's conductance plateaus are individually identified and statistically analysed. Both the probabilities to observe, and the lengths of the two last plateaus (at conductance values close to 2e2/h and 4e2/h) are studied. All results converge to show that the occurrence of these two conductance plateaus on a conductance-elongation curve are statistically independent events.
Using spin density functional theory we study the electronic and magnetic properties of atomically thin, suspended chains containing silver and oxygen atoms in an alternating sequence. Chains longer than 4 atoms develop a half-metallic ground state implying fully spin polarized charge carriers. The conductances of the chains exhibit weak even-odd oscillations around an anomalously low value of 0.1G_0 (G_0 = 2e^2h) which coincide with the averaged experimental conductance in the long chain limit. The unusual conductance properties are explained in terms of a resonating-chain model which takes t…
Using a scanning tunnel microscope or mechanically controlled break junctions, atomic contacts of Au, Pt and Ir are pulled to form chains of atoms. We have recorded traces of conductance during the pulling process and averaged these for a large amount of contacts. An oscillatory evolution of conductance is observed during the formation of the monoatomic chain suggesting a dependence on even or odd numbers of atoms forming the chain. This behaviour is not only present in the monovalent metal Au, as it has been previously predicted, but is also found in the other metals which form chains suggest…
In this paper we propose that, quantized and nearly half-quantized intrinsic anomalous Hall effect can be induced by in-plane external magnetic field through the Zeeman coupling in non-magnetic 2D systems with sizeable spin-orbital coupling but without two-fold rotational symmetry. An analytical result is derived for 2D electron gas model with $C_{3v}$ symmetry. Based on the $\boldsymbol{k\cdot p}$ Hamiltonian derived from first principle calculations, we find that quantized and nearly half-quantized conductance can be observed in $\mathrm{Sb_2Te_3}$ thin film in the clean limit with strong in…
We present a first-principles investigation to show that the contact conductance of a half conductance quantum ($G_0/2$) found previously does not generally hold for single-atom magnetic junctions composed of a tip and an adatom dsorbed on a surface. The contact conductance of the Ni-Co/Co(111) junction is approximately $G_0/2$, while for the Co-Co/Co(111), Ni-Ni/Ni(111), and Ni-Ni/Ni(001) junctions the contact conductances are 0.80$G_0$, 1.55$G_0$, and 1.77$G_0$, respectively. The deviation from $G_0/2$ is mainly caused by the variation of the spin-down conductance largely determined by the m…
Combining density functional theory calculations for molecular electronic structure with a Green function method for electron transport, we calculate from first principles the molecular conductance of benzene connected to two Au leads through different anchoring atoms -- S, Se, and Te. The relaxed atomic structure of the contact, different lead orientations, and different adsorption sites are fully considered. We find that the molecule-lead coupling, electron transfer, and conductance all depend strongly on the adsorption site, lead orientation, and local contact atomic configuration. For flat…
A low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope is employed to build a junction comprising a Co atom bridging a copper-coated tip and a Cu(100) surface. An Abrikosov-Suhl-Kondo resonance is evidenced in the differential conductance and its width is shown to vary exponentially with the ballistic conductance regardless of the tip structure. Using a theoretical description based on the Anderson model, we show that the Kondo effect and the conductance are related through the atomic relaxations affecting the environment of the Co atom.
