Heavy-ion collisions will enter a new era with the start of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A first short run with proton-proton collisions at the injection energy of 0.9 TeV will be followed by a longer one with $pp$ collisions at 10 TeV. First Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.5 TeV will take place in 2009. Three experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS) will study both $pp$ and Pb-Pb collisions. A selection of results showing the capabilities of the three experiments for the study of the LHC medium with electromagnetic probes is presented.
We analyse the recently available experimental data on direct photon productions from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV RHIC and from Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=2.76 TeV LHC energies. The transverse momentum ($p_T$) distributions have been evaluated with the assumption of an initial quark gluon plasma phase at temperatures $T_i$=404 and 546 MeV with initial thermalisation times $τ_i$=0.2 and 0.1 fm/c respectively for RHIC and LHC energies. The theoretical evalutions agree reasonably well with the experimental observations. The thermal window for the LHC energy is justified t…
We present predictions for the J/psi and rho meson production in the heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPC) for the current energy 2.76 TeV at the LHC. Both total cross sections and cross sections with the neutron emission from one or both nuclei are presented. We also analyse the RHIC rho meson photoproduction data and emphasize importance of these data to test the current model for nucleus break up in UPC.
Exploring the effects of $α$-clustered structure of $^{16}O$ nuclei in anisotropic flow fluctuations in $^{16}O$-$^{16}O$ collisions at the LHC within a CGC+Hydro framework
High energy p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN-LHC offer unprecedented opportunities for studying wide variety of physics at small Bjorken-x. Here we discuss capabilities of the ALICE experiment at the CERN-LHC for probing small-x QCD physics. A new forward electromagnetic calorimeter is being proposed as an ALICE upgrade to explore the small-x region in more detail.
The ALICE detector at the LHC studies $π^0$ and $η$ meson production by two complementary methods, using electromagnetic calorimeters and the central tracking system for converted photons. Production spectra of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons were measured with ALICE in pp collisions at LHC energies at mid-rapidity in a wide transverse momentum range. The spectrum and the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of $π^0$ measured in Pb-Pb collisions at different centralities, show a clear pattern of strong suppression in a hot QCD medium with respect to pp collisions.
The interaction of $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons (Y) with nucleons (N) is strongly influenced by the coupled-channel dynamics. Due to the small mass difference of the $\rm N Λ$ and $\rm N Σ$ systems, the sizeable coupling strength of the $\rm N Σ\leftrightarrow N Λ$ processes constitutes a crucial element in the determination of the N$Λ$ interaction. In this letter we present the most precise measurements on the interaction of p$Λ$ pairs, from zero relative momentum up to the opening of the $\rm N Σ$ channel. The correlation function in the relative momentum space for $\mathrm{p}Λ\oplus\overline{\mathr…
Higgs boson production in partonic and electromagnetic (photon-photon) interactions of light- and heavy-ions (A-A) at the LHC and future colliders is summarized. Parton-induced cross sections --including gluon-gluon, vector-boson fusion, and associated W, Z, t processes-- are computed at NNLO with MCFM 8.0 using nuclear parton distribution functions. Photon-photon cross sections are computed with MadGraph 5.0 for ultraperipheral A-A interactions with both ions surviving the collision. In the center-of-mass energy range $\sqrt{s} \approx 5$--100 TeV, the ratio of electromagnetic-to-partonic Hig…
A strongly interacting Quark-Gluon Plasma (sQGP) is created in the high energy heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. Our present understanding of sQGP as a very good liquid with astonishingly low viscosity is reviewed. With the arrival of the interesting results from LHC in high-energy p+p and p+A, a new endeavour to characterize the transition from these small systems to heavy ions (A+A) is now in place, since, even the small systems showed prominent similarities to heavy ions in the rising multiplicity domains. An outlook of future possibilities for better measurements is also made at the en…
The first measurement at the LHC of charge-dependent directed flow ($v_{1}$) relative to the spectator plane is presented for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Results are reported for charged hadrons and $\rm D^{0}$ mesons for the transverse momentum intervals $p_{\rm T}>0.2$ GeV/$c$ and $3<p_{\rm T}<$ 6 GeV/$c$ in the 5-40% and 10-40% centrality classes, respectively. The difference between the positively and negatively charged hadron $v_{1}$ has a positive slope as a function of pseudorapidity $η$, ${\rm d}Δ{v_1}/{\rm d}η=$[1.68 $\pm$ 0.49 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.41 (syst.)] $\tim…
The past decade has seen huge advances in experimental measurements made in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and more recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These new data, in combination with theoretical advances from calculations made in a variety of frameworks, have led to a broad and deep knowledge of the properties of thermal QCD matter. Increasingly quantitative descriptions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in these collisions have established that the QGP is a strongly coupled liquid with the lowest value of specific viscosity ever measured…
Vector mesons are copiously produced in ultra-peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions. In these collisions, the nuclei are separated by impact parameters larger than the sum of the nuclear radii, and the interaction is mediated by the electromagnetic field. The interaction effectively corresponds to a photonuclear interaction between a photon, generated from the electromagnetic field of one of the nuclei, and the target nucleus. The ALICE Collaboration has previously published results on exclusive J/psi photoproduction at mid and forward rapidities in Pb-Pb collisions. The cross section for this…
In diffractive interactions of protons or nuclei a violent collision can occur that leaves the forward going particle completely intact -with probability determined by the structure of the proton or nucleus. At very high energies these collisions also occur with both incident particles remaining intact. This is called central exclusive production. If a new particle, such as the Higgs boson, were produced exclusively this process would give a precise measurement of its mass and test for expected properties of the Higgs. Because of its unusual features this process is also a promising discovery …
Electromagnetic and electroweak probes are the most versatile probes in the study of heavy-ion collisions. Produced at every stage in the evolution of QCD matter, its messengers are practically inert to the strongly interacting medium they travel through. In this contribution, I will discuss a selection of new results from experiments at the LHC, RHIC, and SIS facilities, spanning almost four orders of magnitude in beam energy. I will conclude with a brief overview of the experimental landscape in the near future.
Photon-jet correlations are a promising channel for the study of parton energy loss in nuclear collisions. While existing measurements in pp and nuclear collisions have used high energy photons and jets, we focus on an unexplored kinematic range given by $12<p_{\mathrm{T}}<30$ GeV/$c$ photons and the corresponding low jet $p_{\mathrm{T}}$. We present results obtained using 5.02 TeV pp and p-Pb collisions. A combination of isolation and electromagnetic shower-shape variables is used to reduce the large background from meson decays and fragmentation photons. We show how the access to this kinema…
The theoretical developments in the study of electromagnetic radiation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are reviewed. The recent progress in the rates for photon and lepton pair production is discussed. Together with the improvements in the hydrodynamic descriptions of the bulk medium, the combined effort is discussed to resolve the "direct photon flow puzzle" in the RHIC and the LHC experiments. Further prediction of the direct photon production in high multiplicity proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC energy can serve as a signature of the quark gluon plasma formation in these small syst…
The energy dependence of observable two particle correlator in search for the local strong parity violation in Au+Au collisions is estimated within a simple phenomenological model. The model reproduces available RHIC data but at LHC predicts that the Chiral Magnetic effect (CME) will be about 20 times weaker than at RHIC, contrary to the first LHC measurements. In the lower energy range this effect should vanish sharply at energy somewhere above the top SPS one with agreement with the preliminary results of the Beam Energy Scan program. To elucidate CME background effects a transport HSD model…
