Impurities are ubiquitous in condensed matter. Boundary Conformal Field Theory (BCFT) provides a powerful method to study a localized quantum impurity interacting with a gapless continuum of excitations. The results can also be implied to nanoscopic devices like quantum dots. In these lecture notes, I review this field, including the following topics: I. General Renormalization Group (RG) framework for quantum impurity problems: example of simplest Kondo model II. Multi-channel Kondo model III. Quantum Dots: experimental realizations of one and two channel Kondo models IV. Impurities in Luttinger liquids: point contact in a quantum wire V. Quantum impurity entanglement entropy VI. Y-junctions of Luttinger liquids VII. Boundary condition changing operators and the X-ray edge problem.
Quantum impurity models play an important role in many areas of physics from condensed matter to AMO and quantum information. They are important models for many physical systems but also provide key insights to understanding much more complicated scenarios. In this paper we introduce a simplified method to describe the thermodynamic properties of integrable quantum impurity models. We show this method explicitly using the anisotropic Kondo and the interacting resonant level models. We derive a simplified expression for the free energy of both models in terms of a single physically transparent …
The Kondo effect, one of the oldest correlation phenomena known in condensed matter physics, has regained attention due to scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) experiments performed on single magnetic impurities. Despite the sub-nanometer resolution capability of local probe techniques one of the fundamental aspects of Kondo physics, its spatial extension, is still subject to discussion. Up to now all STS studies on single adsorbed atoms have shown that observable Kondo features rapidly vanish with increasing distance from the impurity. Here we report on a hitherto unobserved long range Kondo…
We present a way to include impurities in AdS/CFT correspondence, in view of its application to condensed matter physics. Examples of these are the current impurity and spin impurity. We calculate electric conductivity and spin susceptibility of holographic superconductors, with doping of density/spin impurities.
Nanoscale physics and dynamical mean field theory have both generated increased interest in complex quantum impurity problems and so have focused attention on the need for flexible quantum impurity solvers. Here we demonstrate that the mapping of single quantum impurity problems onto spin-chains can be exploited to yield a powerful and extremely flexible impurity solver. We implement this cluster algorithm explicitly for the Anderson and Kondo Hamiltonians, and illustrate its use in the ``mesoscopic Kondo problem''. To study universal Kondo physics, a large ratio between the effective bandwidt…
The Kondo effect is an ubiquitous phenomenon appearing at low temperature in quantum confined systems coupled to a continuous bath. Efforts in understanding and controlling it have triggered important developments across several disciplines of condensed matter physics. A recurring pattern in these studies is that the suppression of the Kondo effect often results in intriguing physical phenomena such as impurity quantum phase transitions or non-Fermi-liquid behavior. We show that the fidelity susceptibility is a sensitive indicator for such phenomena because it quantifies the sensitivity of the…
Machine learning methods are applied to finding the Green's function of the Anderson impurity model, a basic model system of quantum many-body condensed-matter physics. Different methods of parametrizing the Green's function are investigated; a representation in terms of Legendre polynomials is found to be superior due to its limited number of coefficients and its applicability to state of the art methods of solution. The dependence of the errors on the size of the training set is determined. The results indicate that a machine learning approach to dynamical mean-field theory may be feasible.
Quantum simulators hold the promise of probing central questions of high-energy physics in tunable condensed matter platforms, for instance the physics of confinement. Local defects can be an obstacle in these setups harming their simulation capabilities. However, defects in the form of impurities can also be useful as probes of many-body correlations and may lead to fascinating new phenomena themselves. Here, we investigate the interplay between impurity and confinement physics in a basic spin chain setup, showing the emergence of new exotic excitations as impurity-meson bound states with a l…
The search for novel unconventional superconductors is a central topic of modern condensed matter physics. Similar to other Mott insulators, Shastry-Sutherland (SSL) systems are predicted to become superconducting when chemically doped. This makes SrCu2(BO3)2, an experimental realization of SSL model, a suitable candidate and understanding of the doping effects in it very important. Here we report doping-induced emergent states in Mg-doped SrCu2(BO3)2, which remain stable up to high magnetic fields. Using four complementary magnetometry techniques and theoretical simulations, a rich impurity-i…
We study the physics of electron tunneling between multiple quantum dots and the edge of a quantum Hall state. Our results generalize earlier work [G. A. Fiete, W. Bishara, C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176801 (2008)] in which it was shown that a single quantum dot tunnel coupled to a non-Abelian quantum Hall state can realize a stable multi-channel Kondo fixed point at low-energy. In this work, we investigate the physics of multiple dots and find that a rich set of possible low-energy fixed points arises, including those with non-Fermi liquid properties. Previously unidentified fixed points…
The Distributional Exact Diagonalization (DED) scheme is applied to the description of Kondo physics in the Anderson impurity model. DED maps Anderson's problem of an interacting impurity level coupled to an infinite bath onto an ensemble of finite Anderson models, each of which can be solved by exact diagonalization. An approximation to the self-energy of the original infinite model is then obtained from the ensemble averaged self-energy. Using Friedel's sum rule, we show that the particle number constraint, a central ingredient of the DED scheme, ultimately imposes Fermi liquid behavior on t…
Magnetic impurities are responsible for many interesting phenomena in condensed matter systems, notably the Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions. Here we present a holographic model of a magnetic impurity that captures the main physical properties of the large-spin Kondo effect. We estimate the screening length of the Kondo cloud that forms around the impurity from a calculation of entanglement entropy and show that our results are consistent with the g-theorem.
We present a general hydrodynamic theory of transport in the vicinity of superfluid-insulator transitions in two spatial dimensions described by "Lorentz"-invariant quantum critical points. We allow for a weak impurity scattering rate, a magnetic field B, and a deviation in the density, ρ, from that of the insulator. We show that the frequency-dependent thermal and electric linear response functions, including the Nernst coefficient, are fully determined by a single transport coefficient (a universal electrical conductivity), the impurity scattering rate, and a few thermodynamic state variable…
We argue that several materials of much current interest in condensed matter physics share common phenomenological aspects that only very recent investigations are unveiling. The list includes colossal magnetoresistance manganites, high temperature superconducting cuprates, diluted magnetic semiconductors, and others. The common aspect is the relevance of intrinsic inhomogeneities in the form of "clustered states", as explained in the text.
Since the first investigation of the Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions by Metzner and Vollhardt, dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) has become a very powerful tool for the investigation of lattice models of correlated electrons. In DMFT the lattice model is mapped on an effective quantum impurity model in a bath which has to be determined self-consistently. This approach lead to a significant progress in our understanding of typical correlation problems such as the Mott transition; furthermore, the combination of DMFT with ab-initio methods now allows for a realistic treatment …
Symmetry distills the simplicity of natural laws from the complexity of physical phenomena. The symmetry principle is of vital importance in various aspects of modern physics, including analyzing atomic spectra, determining fundamental interactions in the Standard Model, and unifying physics at different energy scales. In this chapter, novel applications of this principle are reviewed in condensed matter physics and cold atom physics for exploring new states of matter.
We consider the screening of a magnetic impurity in a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ wave superconductor. The properties of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state lead to an unusual behavior in the impurity magnetic susceptibility, the impurity specific heat and in the quasiparticle phase shift which can be used to diagnose the nature of the condensed state. We construct an effective theory for this problem and show that it is equivalent to a multichannel (one per node) non-marginal Kondo problem with linear density of states and coupling constant J. There is a quantum phase transition from an unscreened impurity state to an…
The Kondo effect in condensed-matter systems manifests itself most sharply in their transport measurements. Here we propose an analogous transport signature of the orbital Kondo effect realized with ultracold atoms. Our system consists of imbalanced Fermi seas of two components of fermions and an impurity atom of different species which is confined by an isotropic potential. We first apply a π/2 pulse to transform two components of fermions into two superposition states. Their interactions with the impurity atom then cause a "transport" of fermions from majority to minority superposition state…
We discuss some applications of higher symmetry groups to condensed matter systems. We give special attention to the groups SO(n) (n = 4, 5, 6, 8) in the two-dimensional Hubbard model and its generalizations, which model the high T_c cuprate superconductors.
We investigate a quantum dot (Anderson impurity) coupled to metallic leads, with a time-periodic voltage bias across the device. Using a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the model can be mapped onto a two-channel Kondo model, in which the impurity is screened by separate conduction bands corresponding to parity-even and odd superpositions of the metallic leads. By changing the frequency and amplitude of the perturbation, one can tune the system to a quantum critical point with symmetric coupling of the impurity to both channels. For the un…
A single Anderson impurity model recently predicted, through its unstable fixed point, the phase diagram of a two band model correlated conductor, well confirmed by Dynamical Mean Field Theory in infinite dimensions. We study here the one dimensional version of the same model and extract its phase diagram in this opposite limit of reduced dimensionality. As expected for one dimension, the Mott metal-insulator transition at half filling is replaced by a dimerized insulator-undimerized Mott insulator transition, while away from half filling the strongly correlated superconductivity for inverted …
We consider the non-Fermi liquid quantum critical state of the spin-S two-impurity Kondo model, and its potential realization in a quantum dot device. Using conformal field theory (CFT) and the numerical renormalization group (NRG), we show the critical point to be identical to that of the two-channel Kondo model with additional potential scattering, for any spin-S. Distinct conductance signatures are shown to arise as a function of device asymmetry; with the `smoking gun' square-root behavior, commonly believed to arise at low-energies, dominant only in certain regimes.
We discuss the low-energy physics of the three-orbital Anderson impurity model with the Coulomb interaction term of the Kanamori form which has orbital SO(3) and spin SU(2) symmetry and describes systems with partially occupied $t_{2g}$ shells. We focus on the case with two electrons in the impurity that is relevant to Hund's metals. Using the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation we derive an effective Kondo model with couplings between the bulk and impurity electrons expressed in terms of spin, orbital, and orbital quadrupole operators. The bare spin-spin Kondo interaction is much smaller than the…
The functional renormalization group method is used to take into account the vacuum polarization around localized bound states generated by external potential. The application to Atomic Physics leads to improved Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham equations in a systematic manner within the framework of the Density Functional Theory. Another application to Condensed Matter Physics consists of an algorithm to compute quenched averages with or without Coulomb interaction in a non-perturbative manner.
A particle-hole symmetric Anderson impurity model with a metallic host of narrow bandwidth is studied within the framework of the local moment approach. The resultant single-particle spectra are compared to unrestricted Hartree-Fock, second order perturbation theory about the noninteracting limit, and Lanczos spectra by Hofstetter and Kehrein. Rather accurate analytical results explain the spectral evolution over almost the entire range of interactions. These encompass, in particular, a rationale for the four-peak structure observed in the low-energy sector of the Lanczos spectra in the modera…
These notes are loosely based on lectures given at the CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings and Gauge theories, February 2009 and at the IPM String School in Tehran, April 2009. I have focused on a few concrete topics and also on addressing questions that have arisen repeatedly. Background condensed matter physics material is included as motivation and easy reference for the high energy physics community. The discussion of holographic techniques progresses from equilibrium, to transport and to superconductivity.
We review how the AdS/CFT correspondence is motivated within string theory, and discuss how it is generalized to gauge/gravity duality. In particular, we highlight the relation to quantum information theory by pointing out that the Fisher information metric of a Gaussian probability distribution corresponds to an Anti-de Sitter space. As an application example of gauge/gravity duality, we present a holographic Kondo model. The Kondo model in condensed matter physics describes a spin impurity interacting with a free electron gas: At low energies, the impurity is screened and there is a logarith…
A general framework is proposed to tackle analytically local quantum quenches in integrable impurity systems, combining a mapping onto a boundary problem with the form factor approach to boundary-condition-changing operators introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 4370 (1998). We discuss how to compute exactly two central quantities of interest: the Loschmidt echo and the distribution of the work done during the quantum quench. Our results display an interesting crossover physics characterized by the energy scale T_b of the impurity corresponding to the Kondo temperature. We discuss in detail the n…
The topic of the review is the application of new ideas of unconventional quantum states to the physics of condensed matter, in particular of solid state, in the context of modern field theory. A comparison is made with classical papers on many-electron theory, including the formalism of many-electron operators. The essentially many-particle nature of the ground state, individual and collective excitations, and quantum fluctuations in the systems under consideration, as well as quantum phase transitions are discussed with an emphasis on topological aspects and with allowance for the effects of…

Based on its condensed-matter properties, crystal structure, and metallurgy, which includes a phase diagram with six allotropic phases, plutonium is one of the most complicated pure elements in its solid state. Its anomalous properties, which are indicative of a very strongly correlated state, are related to its special position in the periodic table, which is at the boundary between the light actinides that have itinerant 5$f$ electrons and the heavy actinides that have localized 5$f$ electrons. As a foundational study to probe the role of local electronic correlations in Pu, we use the local…
The Kondo effect, an eminent manifestation of many-body physics in condensed matter, is traditionally explained as exchange scattering of conduction electrons on a spinful impurity in a metal. The resulting screening of the impurity's local moment by the electron Fermi sea is characterized by a Kondo temperature $T_K$, below which the system enters a non-perturbative strongly-coupled regime. In recent years, this effect has found its realizations beyond the bulk-metal paradigm in many other itinerant-electron systems, such as quantum dots in semiconductor heterostructures and in nanomaterials,…
The magnetic fields generated by spins and currents provide a unique window into the physics of correlated-electron materials and devices. Proposed only a decade ago, magnetometry based on the electron spin of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond is emerging as a platform that is excellently suited for probing condensed matter systems: it can be operated from cryogenic temperatures to above room temperature, has a dynamic range spanning from DC to GHz, and allows sensor-sample distances as small as a few nanometres. As such, NV magnetometry provides access to static and dynamic magnetic an…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated many-body systems exhibits some of the most puzzling phenomena and challenging problems in condensed matter physics. Here we report on essentially exact results on the time evolution of an impurity injected at a finite velocity into a one-dimensional quantum liquid. We provide the first quantitative study of the formation of the correlation hole around a particle in a strongly coupled many-body quantum system, and find that the resulting correlated state does not come to a complete stop but reaches a steady state which propagates at a finite …
Recent theoretical studies of various strongly-correlated systems in condensed matter physics reveal that the lattice gauge theory(LGT) developed in high-energy physics is quite a useful tool to understand physics of these systems. Knowledges of LGT are to become a necessary item even for condensed matter physicists. In the first part of this paper, we present a concise review of LGT for the reader who wants to understand its basics for the first time. For illustration, we choose the abelian Higgs model, a typical and quite useful LGT, which is the lattice verison of the Ginzburg-Landau model …
We propose that real-space properties of the two-impurity Kondo model can be obtained from an effective spin model where two single-impurity Kondo spin chains are joined via an RKKY interaction between the two impurity spins. We then use a DMRG approach, valid in all ranges of parameters, to study its features using two complementary quantum-entanglement measures, the negativity and the von Neumann entropy. This non-perturbative approach enables us to uncover the precise dependence of the spatial extent $ξ_K$ of the Kondo screening cloud with the Kondo and RKKY couplings. Our results reveal an…
We discuss the quantum phase transition that separates a vacuum state with fully-gapped fermion spectrum from a vacuum state with topologically-protected Fermi points (gap nodes). In the context of condensed-matter physics, such a quantum phase transition with Fermi point splitting may occur for a system of ultracold fermionic atoms in the region of the BEC-BCS crossover, provided Cooper pairing occurs in the non-s-wave channel. For elementary particle physics, the splitting of Fermi points may lead to CPT violation, neutrino oscillations, and other phenomena.
In this review, we describe the potentialities offered by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to explore at a microscopic level new quantum states of condensed matter induced by high magnetic fields. We focus on experiments realised in resistive (up to 34~T) or hybrid (up to 45~T) magnets, which open a large access to these quantum phase transitions. After an introduction on NMR observable, we consider several topics: quantum spin systems (spin-Peierls transition, spin ladders, spin nematic phases, magnetisation plateaus and Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations), the fi…
We analyze the conduction bands of the one dimensional noble-metal chains that contain a Co magnetic impurity by means of ab initio calculations. We compare the results obtained for Cu and Ag pure chains, as well as O doped Cu, Ag and Au chains with those previously found for Au pure chains. We find similar results in the case of Cu and Au hosts, whereas for Ag chains a different behavior is obtained. Differences and similarities among the different systems are analyzed by comparing the electronic structure of the three noble-metal hosts. The d-orbitals of Cu chains at the Fermi level have the…

In this paper, we show that there is a large class of fermionic systems for which it is possible to find, for any dimension, a finite closed set of eigenoperators and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. Then, the hierarchy of the equations of motion closes and analytical expressions for the Green's functions are obtained in terms of a finite number of parameters, to be self-consistently determined. Several examples are given. In particular, for these examples it is shown that in the one-dimensional case it is possible to derive by means of algebraic constraints a set of equations which allow us to…
We describe an open-source implementation of the continuous-time hybridization-expansion quantum Monte Carlo method for impurity models with general instantaneous two-body interactions and complex hybridization functions. The code is built on the ALPS libraries (Applications and Libraries for Physics Simulations).
We study odd-membered chains of spin-(1/2) impurities, with each end connected to its own metallic lead. For antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, universal two-channel Kondo (2CK) physics is shown to arise at low energies. Two overscreening mechanisms are found to occur depending on coupling strength, with distinct signatures in physical properties. For strong inter-impurity coupling, a residual chain spin-(1/2) moment experiences a renormalized effective coupling to the leads; while in the weak-coupling regime, Kondo coupling is mediated via incipient single-channel Kondo singlet formation. W…
Motivated by the relevance of Hund's coupling in the context of multiorbital superconductors, we revisit the problem of a multiorbital Kondo impurity with Hund's interaction. Using dynamical large-N techniques, we propose an efficient approach that retains the essential physics at play, while providing a pathway to scalable quantum impurity solvers. We are able to follow the ground state, dynamic, and thermodynamic properties of this system over many decades of temperature. Our approach captures the emergence of large moments, and follows the stretched evolution of the physics down to their ex…
The coupling between localized magnetic moments and itinerant electrons presents a plethora of interesting physics. The low-energy physics of some quantum impurity systems can be described using conformal field theory (CFT). In this paper, the connection between quantum impurity models and CFT is further strengthened as we construct a class of exactly solvable models with ground states given by CFT correlators. The method developed here is completely analytical and can be applied to fermions with an arbitrary number of colors and multiple impurities. Numerical calculations are performed to cha…
We review applications of the sine-Gordon model, the O(3) non-linear sigma model, the U(1) Thirring model, and the O(N) Gross--Neveu model to quasi one-dimensional quantum magnets, Mott insulators, and carbon nanotubes. We focus upon the determination of dynamical response functions for these problems. These quantities are computed by means of form factor expansions of quantum correlation functions in integrable quantum field theories. This approach is reviewed here in some detail.
Production of very high magnetic fields in the laboratory has relentlessly increased in quantity and quality over the last five decades, and a shift occurred from research focused in magnet technology to studies of the fundamental physics of novel materials in high fields. New strategies designed to understand microscopic mechanisms at play in materials surfaced, with methods to extract fundamental energy scales and thermodynamic properties from thermal probes up to 60 Tesla. Here we summarize developments in the area of specific heat of materials in high magnetic fields, with focus in the ori…
We give a pedagogical introduction to quantum anomalies, how they are calculated using various methods, and why they are important in condensed matter theory. We discuss axial, chiral, and gravitational anomalies as well as global anomalies. We illustrate the theory with examples such as quantum Hall liquids, Fermi liquids, Weyl semi-metals, topological insulators and topological superconductors. The required background is basic knowledge of quantum field theory, including fermions and gauge fields, and some familiarity with path integral and functional methods. Some knowledge of topological p…
This review focuses on the field of quantum entanglement applied to condensed matter physics systems with strong correlations, a domain which has rapidly grown over the last decade. By tracing out part of the degrees of freedom of correlated quantum systems, useful and non-trivial informations can be obtained through the study of the reduced density matrix, whose eigenvalue spectrum (the entanglement spectrum) and the associated Rényi entropies are now well recognized to contains key features. In particular, the celebrated area law for the entanglement entropy of ground-states will be discusse…
The methods of quantum field theory are widely used in condensed matter physics. In particular, the concept of an effective action was proven useful when studying low temperature and long distance behavior of condensed matter systems. Often the degrees of freedom which appear due to spontaneous symmetry breaking or an emergent gauge symmetry, have non-trivial topology. In those cases, the terms in the effective action describing low energy degrees of freedom can be metric independent (topological). We consider a few examples of topological terms of different types and discuss some of their con…
