Secondary Fe-peak nuclei in the Tycho Supernova Remnant: A Promising Tracer of Type Ia Progenitor Metallicity

The Mn to Cr mass ratio in supernova ejecta has recently been proposed as a tracer of Type Ia SN progenitor metallicity. We review the advantages and problems of this observable quantity, and discuss them in the framework of two Galactic supernova remnants: the well known Tycho SNR and W49B, an older object that has been tentatively classified as Type Ia. The fluxes of the Mn and Cr Ka lines in the X-ray spectra of these SNRs observed by the Suzaku and ASCA satellites suggest progenitors of supersolar metallicity for both objects.

The End of Amnesia: A New Method for Measuring the Metallicity of Type Ia Supernova Progenitors Using Manganese Lines in Supernova Remnants

We propose a new method to measure the metallicity of Type Ia supernova progenitors using Mn and Cr lines in the X-ray spectra of young supernova remnants. We show that the Mn to Cr mass ratio in Type Ia supernova ejecta is tightly correlated with the initial metallicity of the progenitor, as determined by the neutron excess of the white dwarf material before thermonuclear runaway. We use this correlation, together with the flux of the Cr and Mn Kalpha X-ray lines in the Tycho supernova remnant recently detected by Suzaku (Tamagawa et al. 2008) to derive a metallicity of log(Z) = -1.32 (+0.67,…

Are the Models for Type Ia Supernova Progenitors Consistent with the Properties of Supernova Remnants?

We explore the relationship between the models for progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae and the properties of the supernova remnants that evolve after the explosion. Most models for Type Ia progenitors in the single degenerate scenario predict substantial outflows during the presupernova evolution. Expanding on previous work, we estimate the imprint of these outflows on the structure of the circumstellar medium at the time of the supernova explosion, and the effect that this modified circumstellar medium has on the evolution of the ensuing supernova remnant. A Cr-K emission line survey in young supernova remnants with Chandra

We performed a Cr-K emission line survey in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Chandra archival data. Our sample includes W49B, Cas A, Tycho and Kepler. We confirmed the existence of the Cr line in W49B and discovered this emission line in the other three SNRs. The line center energies, equivalent widths (EWs) and fluxes of the Cr lines are given. The Cr in Cas A is in a high ionization state while that in Tycho and Kepler is in a much lower one. The Sirius AB binary system has masses that are well determined from many decades of astrometric measurements. Because of the well-measured radius and luminosity of Sirius A, we employed the TYCHO stellar evolution code to determine the age of the Sirius A,B binary system accurately, at 225-250 Myr. Type Ia supernova counts at high z: signatures of cosmological models and progenitors

Determination of the rates at which supernovae of Type Ia (SNe Ia) occur in the early Universe can give signatures of the time spent by the binary progenitor systems to reach explosion and of the geometry of the Universe. Observations made within the Supernova Cosmology Project are already providing the first numbers. Primordial massive supernovae as the first molecular factories in the early universe

We study the ejecta chemistry of a zero-metallicity progenitor, massive, supernova using a novel approach based on chemical kinetics. Species considered span the range of simple, di-atomic molecules such as CO or SiO to more complex species involved in dust nucleation processes. We describe their formation from the gas phase including all possible relevant chemical processes and apply it to the ejecta of a primordial 170 Msun supernova. The ERO Host Galaxy of GRB 020127: Implications for the Metallicity of GRB Progenitors

We present optical and near-IR observations of the host galaxy of GRB 020127, for which we measure R-K=6.2 mag. This is only the second GRB host to date, which is classified as an ERO. The spectral energy distribution is typical of a dusty starburst galaxy, with a redshift, z~1.9, a luminosity, L~5L*, and an inferred stellar mass of ~10^11-10^12 Msun, two orders of magnitude more massive than typical GRB hosts. A comparison to the z~2 mass-metallicity (M-Z) relation indicates that the host metallicity is about 0.5 Zsun. This result shows that at least some GRBs occur in massive, metal-enriched…

Flash ionization of the partially ionized wind of the progenitor of SN 1987A

The H II region created by the progenitor of SN 1987A was further heated and ionized by the supernova flash. Prior to the flash, the temperature of the gas was 4000 - 5000 K, and helium was neutral, while the post-flash temperature was only slightly less than 10^5 K, with the gas being ionized to helium-like ionization stages of C, N and O. The host galaxies of long-duration GRBs in a cosmological hierarchical scenario

We developed a Monte Carlo code to generate long-duration gamma ray burst (LGRB) events within cosmological hydrodynamical simulations consistent with the concordance model. As structure is assembled, LGRBs are generated in the substructure that formed galaxies today. We adopted the collapsar model so that LGRBs are produced by single, massive stars at the final stage of their evolution. Constraining supernova models using the hot gas in clusters of galaxies

The hot Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) in clusters of galaxies is a very large repository of metals produced by supernovae. We aim to accurately measure the abundances in the ICM of many clusters and compare these data with metal yields produced by supernovae. Using the data archive of the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory, we compile a sample of 22 clusters. We fit spectra extracted from the core regions and determine the abundances of silicon, sulfur, argon, alcium, iron, and nickel. Galactic Abundance Patterns via Peimbert Types I & II Planetary Nebulae

Planetary Nebulae (PNe) abundance patterns have long been used to note signatures of nuclear processing and to trace the distribution of metals throughout galaxies. We present abundance gradients and heavy element ratios based upon newly acquired spectrophotometry of a sample of >120 Galactic PNe. This new data set is extracted from spectra that extend from 3600 - 9600 A, allowing the use of [S III] features at 9069 and 9532 A. 44Ti nucleosynthesis gamma-ray lines with SIMBOL-X

In this contribution we discuss the 44Ti nucleosynthesis gamma-ray lines and their visibility with SIMBOL-X from simulations based on its expected sensitivity and spectro-imaging capabilities. The 44Ti radioactive nucleus can provide invaluable information on the details of supernova explosions. Its lifetime of about 85 yrs makes it the best indicator of the youth of these stellar explosions through its three gamma-ray lines at 67.9, 78.4 keV and 1.157 MeV. Dissipation and Extra Light in Galactic Nuclei: II. 'Cusp' Ellipticals

We study the origin and properties of 'extra' or 'excess' central light in the surface brightness profiles of cusp or power-law ellipticals. Dissipational mergers give rise to two-component profiles: an outer profile established by violent relaxation acting on stars present in the progenitors prior to the final merger, and an inner stellar population comprising the extra light, formed in a compact starburst.
