We present a survey of the ortho-H2D+(1_{1,0}-1_{1,1}) line toward a sample of 10 starless cores and 6 protostellar cores, carried out at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The high diagnostic power of this line is revealed for the study of the chemistry, and the evolutionary and dynamical status of low-mass dense cores. The line is detected in 7 starless cores and in 4 protostellar cores. N(ortho-H2D+) ranges between 2 and 40x10^{12} cm^{-2} in starless cores and between 2 and 9x10^{12} cm^{-2} in protostellar cores. The brightest lines are detected toward the densest and most centrally concentrated starless cores, where the CO depletion factor and the deuterium fractionation are also largest. The large scatter observed in plots of N(ortho-H2D+) vs. the observed deuterium fractionation and vs. the CO depletion factor is likely to be due to variations in the ortho-to-para (o/p) ratio of H2D+ from >0.5 for T_{kin} < 10 K gas in pre-stellar cores to ~0.03 (consistent with T_{kin} ~15 K for protostellar cores). The two Ophiuchus cores in our sample also require a relatively low o/p ratio (~0.3). Other parameters, including the cosmic-ray ionization rate, the CO depletion factor (or, more in general, the depletion factor of neutral species), the volume density, the fraction of dust grains and PAHs also largely affect the ortho-H2D+ abundance. The most deuterated and H2D+-rich objects (L429, L1544, L694-2 and L183) are reproduced by chemical models of centrally concentrated (central densties ~10^{6} cm^{-3}) cores with chemical ages between 10^4 and 10^6 yr. Upper limits of the para-H3O+ (1_1- -2_1+) and para-D2H+ (1_{1,0}-1_{0,1}) lines are also given. (Abridged)
We report a detailed attempt to model the ortho-to-para abundance ratio of c-C3H2 so as to reproduce observed values in the cores of the well-known source TMC-1. According to observations, the ortho-to-para ratios vary, within large uncertainties, from a low of near unity to a high of approximately three depending on the core. We used the osu.2003 network of gas-phase chemical reactions augmented by reactions that specifically consider the formation, depletion, and interconversion of the ortho and para forms of the c-C3H2 and its precursor ion c-C3H3+. We investigated the sensitivity of the ca…
We have studied three-dimensional hydrodynamic interactions of relativistic extragalactic jets with two-phase ambient media. These jets propagate through a denser homogeneous gas and then impact clouds with densities 100 to 1000 times higher than the initial beam density. The deflection angle of the jet is influenced more by the density contrast of the cloud than by the beam Mach number of the jet. A relativistic jet with low relativistic beam Mach number can eventually be slightly bent after it crosses the dense cloud; however, we have not seen permanently bent structures in the interaction o…
Deuterium fractionation in molecular ions, in particular HCO+, has been extensively used to estimate the degree of ionization in molecular clouds. This paper reviews recent work on ionization degree in homogeneous clouds. We will show that the N(DCO+)/N(HCO+) column density ratio furnishes a measurement of x(e) only in regions where CO is not significantly depleted, thus in the outer skirts of dense cloud cores. To probe x(e) deep inside the clouds, one has to gauge deuterium enhancement in molecular ions with parent species not affected by depletion (e.g. N2H+), and rely on chemical models wh…
Using studies of nearby star formation with Spitzer, I will argue that star formation is restricted to dense cores within molecular clouds. The nature of these dense cores and their connection to star formation will be discussed. Their distribution over masses and over the cloud is similar to that of stars, and their efficiency of forming stars is much higher than that of the whole cloud. Moving to regions forming more massive stars, we find that the mass distribution of the dense clumps is similar to that of OB associations. The infrared luminosity per unit mass of dense gas is high and compa…
Gamma-ray spectra from cosmic-ray proton and electron interactions with dense gas clouds have been calculated using a Monte Carlo event simulation code, GEANT4. Such clouds are postulated as a possible form of baryonic dark matter in the Universe. The simulation fully tracks the cascade and transport processes that are important in a dense medium, and the resulting gamma-ray spectra are computed as a function of cloud column-density. These calculations are used for predicting the Galactic diffuse gamma-ray spectrum that may be contributed by baryonic dark matter; the results are compared with …
In this model a collimated ultra-relativistic ejecta collides with an amorphous dense cloud surrounding the central engine, producing gamma-rays via synchrotron process. The ejecta is taken as a standard candle, while assuming a gaussian distribution in thickness and density of the surrounding cloud. Due to the cloud high density, the synchrotron emission would be an instantaneous phenomenon (fast cooling synchrotron radiation), so a GRB duration corresponds to the time that the ejecta takes to pass through the cloud. Fitting the model with the observed bimodal distribution of GRBs' durations,…
We present experimental results obtained from photoionization and photodissociation processes of abundant interstellar methanol (CH$_3$OH) as an alternative route for the production of H$_3^+$ in dense clouds. The measurements were taken at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) employing soft X-ray and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Mass spectra were obtained using the photoelectron-photoion coincidence techniques. Absolute averaged cross sections for the production of H$_3^+$ due to molecular dissociation of methanol by soft X-rays (C1s edge) were determined. The H$_3^+$'s phot…
We report on high-angular resolution observations of a dense core in the cirrus cloud MCLD123.5+24.9 obtained with the PdB and the OVRO interferometers. Our maps show substructures down to the scale of the beam (~ 1000 AU). The chosen molecules CS(2-1) and HC_3N(10-9) trace different regions in the core. This can be explained by time-dependent chemical evolution of the cloud and therefore provides constraints on the timescales of the fragmentation and core formation processes. Our data demonstrate that the chemical evolution plays the decisive role in our attempt to interpret observational dat…
We survey the kinematics of over one hundred and fifty candidate (and potentially star-forming) dense cores in the Perseus molecular cloud with pointed N2H+(1-0) and simultaneous C18O(2-1) observations. Our detection rate of N2H+ is 62%, rising to 84% for JCMT SCUBA-selected targets. In agreement with previous observations, we find that the dense N2H+ targets tend to display nearly thermal linewidths, particularly those which appear to be starless (using Spitzer data), indicating turbulent support on the small scales of molecular clouds is minimal. For those N2H+ targets which have an associat…
The central engines of active galactic nuclei (AGN) contain cold, dense material as well as hot X-ray emitting gas. The standard paradigm for the engine geometry is a cold thin disc sandwiched between hot X-ray coronae. Strong support for this geometry in Seyferts comes from the study of fluorescent iron line profiles, although the evidence is not ubiquitously air tight. The thin disc model of line profiles in AGN and in X-ray binaries should be bench marked against other plausible possibilities. One proposed alternative is an engine consisting of dense clouds embedded in an optically thin, ge…
Cosmochemical evidence for the existence of short-lived radioisotopes (SLRI) such as $^{26}$Al and $^{60}$Fe at the time of the formation of primitive meteorites requires that these isotopes were synthesized in a massive star and then incorporated into chondrites within $\sim 10^6$ yr. A supernova shock wave has long been hypothesized to have transported the SLRI to the presolar dense cloud core, triggered cloud collapse, and injected the isotopes. Previous numerical calculations have shown that this scenario is plausible when the shock wave and dense cloud core are assumed to be isothermal at…
A detailed study of interstellar polarization efficiency toward molecular clouds is used to attempt discrimination between grain alignment mechanisms in dense regions of the ISM. Background field stars are used to probe polarization efficiency in quiescent regions of dark clouds, yielding a dependence on visual extinction well-represented by a power law. No significant change in this behavior is observed in the transition region between the diffuse outer layers and dense inner regions of clouds, where icy mantles are formed, and we conclude that mantle formation has little or no effect on the …
We present a theoretical investigation of CN and HCN molecule formation in dense interstellar clouds. We study the gas-phase CN and HCN production efficiencies from the outer photon-dominated regions (PDRs) into the opaque cosmic-ray dominated cores. We calculate the equilibrium densities of CN and HCN, and of the associated species C+, C, and CO, as functions of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) optical depth. We consider isothermal gas at 50 K, with hydrogen particle densities from 10^2 to 10^6 cm^-3. We study clouds that are exposed to FUV fields with intensities 20 to 2*10^5 times the mean interst…
The range of microphysical and global dynamical timescales in the central regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is sufficiently wide to permit the existence of multiphase structure. In particular, very dense, cool clouds can coexist with a hot, magnetically-dominated medium and can thereby efficiently reprocess the continuum radiation generated in this primary source region. The strong dynamical forces in this central magnetosphere can give rise to extremely small clouds. Microphysical processes then determine whether such clouds can indeed survive, in spite of their extremely contrasting pr…
We present a detailed model for the thermal balance, chemistry, and radiative transfer within quiescent dense molecular cloud cores that contain a central protostar. Large variations in the gas temperature are expected to affect the gas-phase chemistry dramatically; with the predicted H2O abundance varying by more than a factor of 1000 within cloud cores. Based on our predicitions for the thermal and chemical structure of the cores, we have constructed self-consistent radiative transfer models to compute line strengths and profiles for transitions of various isotopomers of CO, H2O, and OI. We …
We have investigated the time scale for formation of molecular clouds by examining the conversion of HI to H2 using a time-dependent model. H2 formation on dust grains and cosmic ray and photo destruction are included in one-dimensional model slab clouds which incorporate time-independent density and temperature distributions. We calculate 21cm spectral line profiles seen in absorption against a background provided by general Galactic HI emission, and compare the model spectra with HI Narrow Self-Absorption, or HINSA, profiles absorbed in a number of nearby molecular clouds. The time evolution…
We have examined the relationship between the optical depth of the 9.7 micron silicate absorption feature (tau_9.7) and the near-infrared color excess, E(J-Ks) in the Serpens, Taurus, IC 5146, Chameleon I, Barnard 59, and Barnard 68 dense clouds/cores. Our data set, based largely on Spitzer IRS spectra, spans E(J-Ks)=0.3 to 10 mag (corresponding to visual extinction between about 2 and 60 mag.). All lines of sight show the 9.7 micron silicate feature. Unlike in the diffuse ISM where a tight linear correlation between the 9.7 micron silicate feature optical depth and the extinction (Av) is obse…
We present results of an extensive mapping survey of N2H+(1-0) in about 60 low mass cloud cores already mapped in the NH3(1,1) inversion transition line. The survey has been carried out at the FCRAO antenna with an angular resolution about 1.5 times finer than the previous ammonia observations. Cores with stars typically have map sizes about a factor of two smaller for N2H+ than for NH3, indicating the presence of denser and more centrally concentrated gas compared to starless cores. Significant correlations are found between NH3 and N2H+ column densities and excitation temperatures in starles…
High-resolution SiO observations of the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A star-forming region showed a highly collimated outflow with a substantial deflection. The deflection was suggested to be caused by the interactions of the outflow and a dense cloud core. To investigate the deflection process of protostellar outflows, we have carried out three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the collision of an outflow with a dense cloud. Assuming a power-law type density distribution of the obstructing cloud, the numerical experiments show that the deflection angle is mainly determined by the impact parameter and…
We discuss the connection between the chemistry of dense interstellar clouds and those characteristics of cometary matter that could be remnants of it. The chemical evolution observed to occur in molecular clouds is summarized and a model for dense core collapse that can plausibly account for the isotopic fractionation of hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon measured in primitive solar system materials is presented.
We present aperture synthesis imaging of dense molecular gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud, taken with the prototype millimeter receivers of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our observations of the N113 HII region reveal a condensation with a size of ~6" (1.5 pc) FWHM, detected strongly in the 1-0 lines of HCO+, HCN and HNC, and weakly in C_2H. Comparison of the ATCA observations with single-dish maps from the Mopra Telescope and sensitive spectra from the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope indicates that the condensation is a massive clump of ~10^4 solar masses within a larger ~…
We present ISO observations of the S(0), S(1), S(2), and S(3) rotational lines of molecular hydrogen from two molecular clouds near the Galactic Center (GC). We have also measured continuum dust emission at infrared wavelengths with ISO and the rotational radio lines J=1-0 of 13CO and C18O and J=2-1 of C18O with the IRAM-30m telescope. Using the dust continuum spectra and the CO lines we derive a total visual extinction of 15-20 magnitudes toward these GC clouds. After correcting the H2 data for extinction, the gas temperatures are \~250 K and the column densities of warm gas are ~2e21 cm-2. T…
We present a theoretical investigation of the chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds. The chemistry of interstellar fluorine is qualitatively different from that of any other element, because - unlike the neutral atoms of any other element found in diffuse or dense molecular clouds - atomic fluorine undergoes an exothermic reaction with molecular hydrogen. Over a wide range of conditions attained within interstellar gas clouds, the product of that reaction - hydrogen fluoride - is predicted to be the dominant gas-phase reservoir of interstellar flu…
Virtually all detailed gas-phase models of the chemistry of dense interstellar clouds exclude polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's). This omission is unfortunate because from the few studies that have been done on the subject, it is known that the inclusion of PAH's can affect the gas-phase chemistry strongly. We have added PAH's to our network to determine the role they play in the chemistry of cold dense cores. In the models presented here, we include radiative attachment to form PAH-, mutual neutralization between PAH anions and small positively-charged ions, and photodetachment. We also…

We present the BVI photometric maps of the Large Magellanic Cloud. They contain BVI photometry and astrometry of more than 7 million stars from the central parts of the LMC. The data were collected during the second phase of the OGLE microlensing project. We discuss the accuracy of the data and present color-magnitude diagrams of all 26 fields observed by OGLE in the LMC. The BVI maps of the LMC are accessible electronically for the astronomical community from the OGLE Internet archive.
We report new calculations of interstellar 15N fractionation. Previously, we have shown that large enhancements of 15N/14N can occur in cold, dense gas where CO is frozen out, but that the existence of an NH + N channel in the dissociative recombination of N2H+ severely curtails the fractionation. In the light of recent experimental evidence that this channel is in fact negligible, we have reassessed the 15N chemistry in dense cloud cores. We consider the effects of temperatures below 10 K, and of the presence of large amounts of atomic nitrogen. We also show how the temporal evolution of gas-…
The primary radiation generated in the central continuum-forming region of Active Galactic Nuclei can be reprocessed by very dense, small-scale clouds that are optically-thin to Thomson scattering. In spite of the extreme conditions expected to prevail in this innermost, central environment, the radiative clouds can survive and maintain cool temperatures relative to the ambient emitting region by means of magnetic confinement. Motivated by these ideas, we present a detailed quantitative study of such clouds, explicitly describing the physical properties they can attain under thermal and radiat…
We study the evolution of molecular hydrogen on the grain surfaces and in the gas phase using both the rate equation (which tracks the average number of molecules) and the master equation (which tracks the expectation values of molecules). We show that above a certain critical accretion rate of $H$ on the grains, the results from these two methods become identical. We used this result to follow the collapse of a dense interstellar cloud and studied the formation of molecular hydrogen for two different temperatures (T=10K and 12K) and two different masses ($1M_\odot$ and $10M_\odot$) of the clo…
We investigate the chemical and observational implications of repetitive transient dense core formation in molecular clouds. We allow a transient density fluctuation to form and disperse over a period of 1 Myr, tracing its chemical evolution. We then allow the same gas immediately to undergo further such formation and dispersion cycles. The chemistry of the dense gas in subsequent cycles is similar to that of the first, and a limit cycle is reached quickly (2 - 3 cycles). Enhancement of hydrocarbon abundances during a specific period of evolution is the strongest indicator of previous dynamica…
We present Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) observations of the 1_{10}-1_{01} transition of ortho-water at 557 GHz toward 12 molecular cloud cores. The water emission was detected in NGC 7538, Rho Oph A, NGC 2024, CRL 2591, W3, W3(OH), Mon R2, and W33, and was not detected in TMC-1, L134N, and B335. We also present a small map of the water emission in S140. Observations of the H_2^{18}O line were obtained toward S140 and NGC 7538, but no emission was detected. The abundance of ortho-water relative to H_2 in the giant molecular cloud cores was found to vary between 6x10^{-10} and 1…
In this paper, we review some of the properties of dense molecular cloud cores. The results presented here rely on three-dimensional numerical simulations of isothermal, magnetized, turbulent, and self-gravitating molecular clouds (MCs) in which dense core form as a consequence of the gravo-turbulent fragmentation of the clouds. In particular we discuss issues related to the mass spectrum of the cores, their lifetimes and their virial balance.
