Clouds, Clumps, Cores & Comets - a Cosmic Chemical Connection?

We discuss the connection between the chemistry of dense interstellar clouds and those characteristics of cometary matter that could be remnants of it. The chemical evolution observed to occur in molecular clouds is summarized and a model for dense core collapse that can plausibly account for the isotopic fractionation of hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon measured in primitive solar system materials is presented.

Chemical Processes in Cometary Comae

Recent developments in the chemical modelling of cometary comae are described. We discuss the cyanide chemistry and present new HCN observations of the recent comet C/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang). The connection between interstellar and cometary organic molecules is discussed from the perspective of recent theories of interstellar gas-grain chemistry.

A detailed modelling of the chemically rich clumps along the CB3 outflow

In order to investigate the origin and the structure of the low velocity, chemically rich clumps observed along the lobes of low- and intermediate-mass outflows, we construct a detailed model of the S1 clump along the CB3 outflow. We use a time-dependent chemical model coupled with a radiative transfer model to reproduce the observed line profile for a direct comparison with previous observations of this clump. Observations of chemical differentiation in clumpy molecular clouds

We have extensively mapped a sample of dense molecular clouds (L1512, TMC-1C, L1262, Per 7, L1389, L1251E) in lines of HC3N, CH3OH, SO and C^{18}O. We demonstrate that a high degree of chemical differentiation is present in all of the observed clouds. We analyse the molecular maps for each cloud, demonstrating a systematic chemical differentiation across the sample, which we relate to the evolutionary state of the cloud. The unusual volatile composition of the Halley-type comet 8P/Tuttle: Addressing the existence of an Inner Oort Cloud

We measured organic volatiles (CH4, CH3OH, C2H6, H2CO), CO, and water in comet 8P/Tuttle, a comet from the Oort cloud reservoir now in a short-period Halley-type orbit. We compare its composition with two other comets in Halley-type orbits, and with comets of the "organics-normal" and "organics-depleted" classes. Chemical gradients are expected in the comet-forming region of the proto-planetary disk, and an individual comet should reflect its specific heritage. Isotopic abundances of carbon and nitrogen in Jupiter-family and Oort Cloud comets

The 12C14N/12C15N and 12C14N/13C14N isotopic ratios are determined for the first time in a Jupiter-family comet, 88P/1981 Q1 Howell, and in the chemically peculiar Oort Cloud comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR). By comparing these measurements to previous ones derived for six other Oort Cloud comets (including one of Halley-type), we find that both the carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios are constant within the uncertainties. Biomolecules in the Interstellar Medium and Comets

We review recent studies of organic molecule formation in dense molecular clouds and in comets. We summarise the known organic inventories of molecular clouds and recent comets, particularly Hale-Bopp. The principal chemical formation pathways involving gas phase reactions, as well as formation by catalytic reactions on grain surfaces or through dust fragmentation, are identified for both dense clouds and cometary comae. Evidence for transient clumps and gas chemical evolution in the CS core of L673

We present FCRAO maps as well as combined BIMA and FCRAO maps of the high density molecular emission towards the CS core in the L673 region. With the FCRAO telescope, we mapped the emission in the CS(2-1), C34S(2-1), HCO+(1-0), and H13CO+(1-0) lines. The high density molecular emission, which arises from a filamentary structure oriented in the NW-SE direction, shows clear morphological differences for each molecule. Sungrazing comets as source of pickup ions at Earth orbit and Ulysses

Most of the sungrazing comets observed by LASCO at SOHO belong to the Kreutz group of comets and follow trajectories that are tightly clumped in space. Statistical analysis of 9 years of SOHO observations suggests that the true apparition rate of these comets is as high as one every other day. Practically all these comets break up before perihelion passage. Their material is dissociated and ionized, and subsequently transported away from the Sun as pickup ions in the solar wind. Radial Distribution of Production Rates, Loss Rates and Densities Corresponding to Ion Masses <=40 amu in the Inner Coma of Comet Halley: Composition and Chemistry

In this paper we have studied the chemistry of C, H, N, O, and S compounds corresponding to ions of masses <=40 amu in the inner coma of the comet 1P/Halley. The production rates, loss rates, and ion mass densities are calculated using the Analytical Yield Spectrum approach and solving coupled continuity equation controlled by the steady state photochemical equilibrium condition. Physical and chemical conditions in methanol maser selected hot-cores and UCHII regions

We present the results of a targeted 3-mm spectral line survey towards the eighty-three 6.67 GHz methanol maser selected star forming clumps observed by Purcell et al. 2006. In addition to the previously reported measurements of HCO+ (1 - 0), H13CO+ (1 - 0), and CH3CN (5 - 4) & (6 -5), we used the Mopra antenna to detect emission lines of N2H+ (1 - 0), HCN (1 - 0) and HNC (1 - 0) towards 82/83 clumps (99 per cent), and CH3OH (2 - 1) towards 78/83 clumps (94 per cent). Multitransitional observations of the CS core of L673

A multitransitional study with the BIMA interferometric array was carried out toward the starless core found in the L673 region, in order to study the small-size structure of the cores detected with previous single--dish observations, which provides us with a test of the predictions of the chemical model of Taylor et al. (1996; 1998). We detected emission in the CS (2-1), N2H+ (1-0), and HCO+ (1-0) lines. Triggered Star Formation by Massive Stars

We present our diagnosis of the role that massive stars play in the formation of low- and intermediate-mass stars in OB associations (the Lambda Ori region, Ori OB1, and Lac OB1 associations). We find that the classical T Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars tend to line up between luminous O stars and bright-rimmed or comet-shaped clouds; the closer to a cloud the progressively younger they are. C18O (3-2) observations of the Cometary Globule CG 12: a cold core and a C18O hot spot

The feasibility of observing the C18O (3-2) spectral line in cold clouds with the APEX telescope has been tested. As the line at 329.330 GHz lies in the wing of a strong atmospheric H2O absorption it can be observed only at high altitude observatories. Using the three lowest rotational levels instead of only two helps to narrow down the physical properties of dark clouds and globules. Formation of Interstellar Ices Behind shock Waves

We have used a coupled dynamical and chemical model to examine the chemical changes induced by the passage of an interstellar shock in well shielded regions. Using this model we demonstrate that the formation of water in a shock will be followed in the post--shock phase by depletion of the water molecules onto the grain surfaces. Cosmic Dust in the 21st Century

The past century of interstellar dust has brought us from first ignoring it to finding that it plays an important role in the evolution of galaxies. Current observational results in our galaxy provide a complex physical and chemical evolutionary picture of interstellar dust starting with the formation of small refractory particles in stellar atmospheres to their modification in diffuse and molecular clouds and ultimately to their contribution to star forming regions.
