Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we have detected the CO J=2-1, 4-3, 5-4, and 6-5 emission lines in the millimeter-bright, blank-field selected AGN COSMOS J100038+020822 at redshift z=1.8275. The sub-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) excitation of the J=4 level implies that the gas is less excited than that in typical nearby starburst galaxies such as NGC253, and in the high-redshift quasars studied to date, such as J1148+5251 or BR1202-0725. Large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling of the CO line spectral energy distribution (CO SED; flux density vs. rotational quantum number) yields H2 densities in the range 10^{3.5}--10^{4.0} cm-3, and kinetic temperatures between 50 K and 200 K. The H2 mass of (3.6 - 5.4) x 10^{10} M_sun implied by the line intensities compares well with our estimate of the dynamical mass within the inner 1.5 kpc of the object. Fitting a two-component gray body spectrum, we find a dust mass of 1.2 x 10^{9} M_sun, and cold and hot dust temperatures of 42+/-5 K and 160+/-25 K, respectively. The broad MgII line allows us to estimate the mass of the central black hole as 1.7 x 10^{9} M_sun. Although the optical spectrum and multi-wavelength SED matches those of an average QSO, the molecular gas content and dust properties resemble those of known submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). The optical morphology of this source shows tidal tails that suggest a recent interaction or merger. Since it shares properties of both starburst and AGN, this object appears to be in a transition from a strongly starforming submillimeter galaxy to a QSO.
We consider 9 fields of low ecliptic latitude observed at 12 microns centered on QSOs. In these fields we detect 7 additional background sources at the level of 0.4-4mJy in 70 square arcminutes. 4 of these sources correspond to galaxies seen in the Digitized Sky Survey. 3 of these sources are not observed in this survey. The 4 sources with optical counterparts are low redshift objects with low infrared to optical flux ratios and so low inferred infrared luminosities L_FIR <~ 10^9 L_solar. Statistical arguments suggest that the unidentified sources are more likely to be distant L_FIR > 10^10 L_…
In the unusual intrinsic QSO redshift models, QSOs are ejected by active galaxies with periodic non-cosmological reshifts, thus QSOs are generally associated with active galaxies, and certain structures will be revealed in the QSO redshift distribution. As the largest homogeneous sample of QSOs and galaxies, SDSS data provide the best opportunity to examine this issue. We review the debates on this issue, focused on those based on SDSS and 2dF data, and conclude that there is no strong connection between foreground active galaxies and high-redshift QSOs. The existence of two dips in the SDSS Q…
We apply the observed optical/X-ray spectral states of the Galactic black hole candidates (GBHCs) to the cosmological QSO luminosity evolution under the assumptions that QSOs and GBHCs are powered by similar accretion processes and that their emission mechanisms are also similar. The QSO luminosity function (LF) evolution in various energy bands is strongly affected by the spectral evolution which is tightly correlated with the luminosity evolution. We generate a random sample of QSOs born nearly synchronously by allowing the QSOs to have redshifts in a narrow range around an initial high reds…
We report on measurements of the cosmological constant, Lambda, and the redshift space distortion parameter beta=Omega_m^0.6/b, based on an analysis of the QSO power spectrum parallel and perpendicular to the observer's line of sight, from the final catalogue of the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey. We derive a joint Lambda - beta constraint from the geometric and redshift-space distortions in the power spectrum. By combining this result with a second constraint based on mass clustering evolution, we break this degeneracy and obtain strong constraints on both parameters. Assuming a flat cosmology and a…
(ABRIDGED) We present a power spectrum analysis of the 10K catalogue from the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey. We compare the redshift-space power spectra of QSOs to those measured for galaxies and Abell clusters at low redshift and find that they show similar shapes in their overlap range, 50-150h^{-1}Mpc, with P_QSO(k)\propto k^{-1.4}. The amplitude of the QSO power spectrum at z~1.4 is almost comparable to that of galaxies at the present day if Omega_m=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7 (the Lambda cosmology), and a factor of ~3 lower if Omega_m=1 (the EdS cosmology) is assumed. The amplitude of the QSO powe…
We describe a method from which cosmology may be constrained from the 2QZ Survey. By comparing clustering properties parallel and perpendicular to the line of sight and by modeling the effects of redshift space distortions, we are able to study geometric distortions in the clustering pattern which occur if a wrong cosmology is assumed when translating redshifts into comoving distances. Using mock 2QZ catalogues, drawn from the Hubble Volume simulation, we find, that there is a degeneracy between the geometric and the redshift-space distortions that makes it difficult to obtain an unambiguous e…
Older and more recent pieces of observational evidence suggest a strong connection between QSOs and galaxies; in particular, the recently discovered correlation between black hole and galactic bulge masses suggests that QSO activity is directly connected to the formation of galactic bulges. The cosmological problem of QSO formation is analyzed in the framework of an analytical model for galaxy formation; for the first time a joint comparison with galaxy and QSO observables is performed. In this model it is assumed that the same physical variable which determines galaxy morphology is able to mo…
We investigate a large number of cosmological evolution models for QSOs and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We introduce a spectrum-luminosity correlation as a new input parameter and adopt the estimated mass function (MF) of massive black holes in centers of nearby galactic nuclei as a constraint to distinguish among different QSO/AGN models. We explore three basic types of phenomenological scenarios; (i) Models with multiple short-lived ($\sim$ a few $10^{6-8}$ yrs) populations, (ii) Models with a single long-lived ($\sim 10^9$ yr) QSO population, and (iii) Models with recurrent QSO/AGN activi…
The primordial D/H ratio now provides the best measure of the cosmological density of baryons. We describe in detail how we deduce the D/H ratio from absorption lines in the spectra of quasars, and we present our first two measurements of D/H in different QSOs, which agree to within the random errors. We describe how we correct D/H for blending with Lyman alpha forest H lines. For our two QSOs these corrections are small, because the D lines are narrow, deep and constrained by H and metal lines. The similarity of the two measurements rules out ad hoc astrophysical effects, such as the destruct…
We report on the results of a search for an intergalactic X-ray dust scattering halo in a deep observation of the bright, high-redshift quasar QSO 1508+5714 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We do not detect such a halo. Our result implies an upper limit on the density of diffuse, large-grained intergalactic dust of Omega_ dust < 2 x 10^-6, assuming a characteristic grain size of 1micron. The result demonstrates the sensitivity of this technique for detecting very small amounts of intergalactic dust which are very hard to detect otherwise. This will allow us to put important constraints on s…
We obtained near-infrared spectroscopy of the z=5.74 QSO, SDSSp J104433.04-012 502.2 with the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph of the Subaru telescope. The redshift of 5.74 corresponds to a cosmological age of 1.0 Gyr for the current Lambda-dominated cosmology. We found a similar strength of the Fe II (3000-3500 A) emission lines in SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 as in low redshift QSOs. This is the highest redshift detection of iron. We subtracted a power-law continuum from the spectrum and fitted model Fe II emission and Balmer continuum. The rest equivalent width of Fe II (3000-3500 A) is ~30 A …
We present a clustering analysis of QSOs over the redshift range z=0.3-2.9. We use a sample of 10558 QSOs taken from the preliminary catalogue of the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ). The two-point redshift-space correlation function of QSOs is shown to follow a power law on scales s~1-35h-1Mpc. Fitting a power law to QSO clustering averaged over the redshift interval 0.3<z<2.9 we find s_0=3.99+0.28-0.34h-1Mpc and gamma=1.58+0.10-0.09 for an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology (EdS). With Omega_0=0.3 and lambda_0=0.7 the power law extends to s~60h-1Mpc with a best fit of s_0=5.69+0.42-0.50h-1Mpc and gam…
We present a new measurement of the space density of high redshift (3.0<z<4.5), X-ray selected QSOs obtained by exploiting the deep and uniform multiwavelength coverage of the COSMOS survey. We have assembled a statistically large (40 objects), X-ray selected (F_{0.5-2 keV} >10^{-15} cgs), homogeneous sample of z>3 QSOs for which spectroscopic (22) or photometric (18) redshifts are available. We present the optical (color-color diagrams) and X-ray properties, the number counts and space densities of the z>3 X-ray selected quasars population and compare our findings with previous works and mode…
Recently, Park and Gott reported an interesting observation: image separation of lensed QSOs declines with QSO redshift more precipitously than expected in any realistic world model, if the lenses are taken to be either singular isothermal spheres or point masses. In this Letter I propose that the observed trend arises naturally if the lensing galaxies have logarithmic surface mass density profiles that gradually change with radius. If the observed lack of central (odd) images is also taken into account, the data favor a universal dark matter density profile over an isothermal sphere with a co…
Abundance histories for QSO absorption line systems as a function of redshift are presented for all metals lighter than gallium. Coupling various conventional cosmological models with a simple, first--order model for the chemical evolution of the QSO absorption line systems allows transformation of the observed abundance trends in the Galaxy to abundance histories for the gas in QSO absorption line systems. Comparison of the transformed abundance patterns with the zinc to hydrogen [Zn/H] and silicon to hydrogen [Si/H] ratios observed in damped Lyman-$α$ systems finds agreement over more than t…
The observed Fe II(UV+optical)/Mg II lambda lambda 2796,2804 flux ratio from a gravitationally lensed quasar B1422+231 at z=3.62 is interpreted in terms of detailed modeling of photoionization and chemical enrichment in the broad-line region (BLR) of the host galaxy. The delayed iron enrichment by Type Ia supernovae is used as a cosmic clock. Our standard model, which matches the Fe II/Mg II ratio, requires the age of 1.5 Gyr for B1422+231 with a lower bound of 1.3 Gyr, which exceeds the expansion age of the Einstein-de Sitter Omega_0=1 universe at a redshift of 3.62 for any value of the Hubbl…
We present a clustering analysis of QSOs using over 20000 objects from the final catalogue of the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ), measuring the z-space correlation function, xi(s). When averaged over the range 0.3<z<2.2 we find that xi(s) is flat on small scales, steepening on scales above ~25h-1Mpc. In a WMAP/2dF cosmology we find a best fit power law with s_0=5.48+0.42-0.48h-1Mpc and gamma=1.20+-0.10 on scales s=1-25h-1Mpc. A CDM model assuming WMAP/2dF cosmological parameters is a good description of the QSO xi(s) after accounting for non-linear clustering and z-space distortions, and a line…
A recently discovered inverse correlation between QSO redshift and long-term continuum variability timescales was suggested to be the signature of microlensing on cosmological scales (Hawkins 1993). A general theoretical method for calculating such correlations is presented and applied to various lensing scenarios in the framework of $Λ= 0$ Friedmann cosmologies. It is shown that the observed timescales can be strongly influenced by the observational limitations: the finite duration of the monitoring campaign and the finite photometric sensitivity. In most scenarios the timescales increase wit…
Recent observations have shown that (some) metal line absorption systems in QSO spectra arise from gas in galactic halos with radii much larger than the optical radii of galaxies. We show that the observed galaxy-absorber connections are natural results of galaxy formation in hierarchical cosmogonies, where galaxies form from gas cooling and condensation in dark matter halos.
We present clustering results from the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) which currently contains over 20,000 QSOs at z<3. The two-point correlation function of QSOs averaged over the entire survey (<z>~1.5) is found to be similar to that of local galaxies. When sub-dividing the sample as a function of redshift, we find that for an Einstein-de Sitter universe QSO clustering is constant (in comoving coordinates) over the entire redshift range probed by the 2QZ, while in a universe with Omega_0=0.3 and Lambda_0=0.7 there is a marginal increase in clustering with redshift. Sub-dividing the 2QZ on the…
With approximately 6000 QSO redshifts, the 2dF QSO redshift survey is already the biggest complete QSO survey. The aim for the survey is to have 25000 QSO redshifts, providing an order of magnitude increase in QSO clustering statistics. We first describe the observational parameters of the 2dF QSO survey. We then describe several highlights of the survey so far, including new estimates of the QSO luminosity function and its evolution. We also review the current status of QSO clustering analyses from the 2dF data. Finally, we discuss how the complete QSO survey will be able to constrain the valu…
The new result on the QSO absorption lines from VLT-UVES sample is compared with the past reports on the time-variability of the fine-structure "constant" derived from the Keck/HIRES observation, on the basis of an oscillatory behavior of the scalar field supposed to be responsible for the cosmological acceleration.
We review previous results on the clustering and environments of QSOs. We show that the correlation length for QSOs derived from existing surveys is r~5/h Mpc, similar to the observed correlation length for field galaxies at the present epoch. The galaxy environment for z<1 radio-quiet QSOs is also consistent with field galaxies. The evolution of the QSO correlation length with redshift is currently uncertain, largely due to the small numbers of QSOs (~2000) in surveys suitable for clustering analysis. We report on intial progress with the AAT 2dF QSO redshift survey, which, once completed wil…
When the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) is complete, a powerful geometric test for the cosmological constant will be available. By comparing the clustering along and across the line of sight and modelling the effects of peculiar velocities and bulk motions in redshift space, geometric distortions, which occur if the wrong cosmology is assumed, can be detected. In this paper we investigate the effect of geometric and redshift-space distortions in the power spectrum parallel and perpendicular to the observer's line of sight. Ballinger et al. developed a model to estimate the cosmological constant…
We present a power spectrum analysis of the final 2dF QSO Redshift Survey catalogue containing 22652 QSOs. Utilising the huge volume probed by the QSOs, we can accurately measure power out to scales of ~500Mpc and derive new constraints, at z~1.4, on the matter and baryonic contents of the Universe. Importantly, these new cosmological constraints are derived at an intermediate epoch between the CMB observations at z~1000, and local (z~0) studies of large-scale structure; the average QSO redshift corresponds to a look-back time of approximately two-thirds of the age of the Universe. We find tha…
We have performed high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of the Lyman-alpha forest in a variety of popular cold dark matter dominated cosmologies, including a low density and a vacuum-dominated model. The fluctuation amplitude of these models is chosen to match the observed abundance of galaxy clusters at low redshift. We assume that the intergalactic medium is photoionized and photoheated by a uniform UV-background with the required amplitude to give the observed mean hydrogen absorption. We produce simulated spectra, analyze them by fitting Voigt profiles and compare line statistics with t…
The data from the QSO absorption lines indicating a nonzero time-variability of the fine-structure constant has been re-analyzed on the basis of a "damped-oscillator" fit, as motivated by the same type of behavior of a scalar field, dilaton, which mimics a cosmological constant to understand the accelerating universe. We find nearly as good fit to the latest data as the simple weighted mean. In this way, we offer a way to fit the more stringent result from the Oklo phenomenon, as well.
With ~10000 QSO redshifts, the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) is already the biggest individual QSO survey. The aim for the survey is to have ~25000 QSO redshifts, providing an order of magnitude increase in QSO clustering statistics. We first describe the observational parameters of the 2dF QSO survey. We then describe several highlights of the survey so far; we present new estimates of the QSO luminosity function and the QSO correlation function. We also present the first estimate of the QSO power spectrum from the 2QZ catalogue, probing the form of the fluctuation power-spectrum out to the \…
We have used the publicly available data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF QSO Redshift Survey to test the hypothesis that QSOs are ejected from active galaxies with periodic non-cosmological redshifts. For two different intrinsic redshift models, namely the Karlsson $\log(1+z)$ model and Bell's decreasing intrinsic redshift (DIR) model, we do two tests respectively. First, using different criteria, we generate four sets of QSO-galaxy pairs and find there is no evidence for a periodicity at the predicted frequency in $\log(1+z)$, or at any other frequency. We then check the relationshi…
We present a determination of the optical QSO luminosity function and its cosmological evolution with redshift for a sample of over 6000 QSOs identified primarily from the first observations of the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ). For QSOs with -26 < M_B < -23 and 0.35 < z < 2.3, we find that pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models provide an acceptable fit to the observed redshift dependence of the luminosity function. The luminosity function is best fit by a two-power-law function of the form. Exponential luminosity evolution models, both as a function of look-back time, and as a general second…
It has been recently found that the local fluctuations of the QSO's Ly$α$ absorption spectrum transmitted flux show spiky structures. This implies that the mass fields of the intergalactic medium (IGM) is intermittent. This feature cannot be explained by the clustering evolution of cosmic mass field in the linear regimes and is also difficult to incorporate into the hierarchical clustering scenario. We calculate the structure functions and intermittent exponent of the IGM and HI for full hydrodynamical simulation samples. The result shows the intermittent features of the Ly$α$ transmitted flux…
The completed 2dF QSO Redshift (2QZ) Survey has been used to search for extreme large-scale cosmological structure (around 200 Mpc) over the redshift range 0<z<2.5. We demonstrate that statistically significant overdensities and underdensities do exist and hence represent the detection of cosmological fluctuations on comoving scales that correspond to those presently detected in the cosmic microwave background. However, the fractional overdensities on scales >100Mpc are in the linear or only weakly non-linear regime and do not represent collapsed non-linear structures. We compare the measureme…
It is difficult to describe in a few pages the numerous specific techniques used to study absorption lines seen in QSO spectra and to review even rapidly the field of research based on their observation and analysis. What follows is therefore a pale introduction to the invaluable contribution of these studies to our knowledge of the gaseous component of the Universe and its cosmological evolution. A rich bibliography is given which, although not complete, will be hopefully useful for further investigations. Emphasis will be laid on the impact of this field on the question of the formation and …
The Lyman-alpha forest has opened a new redshift regime for cosmological investigation. At z > 2 it provides a unique probe of cosmic geometry and an independent constraint on dark energy that is not subject to standard candle or ruler assumptions. In Paper I of this series on using the Lyman-alpha forest observed in pairs of QSOs for a new application of the Alcock-Paczynski test, we present and discuss the results of a campaign to obtain moderate-resolution spectroscopy (FWHM ~ 2.5 Angstroms) of the Lyman-alpha forest in pairs of QSOs with small redshift differences (Delta z < 0.25, z > 2.2)…
A statistical analysis of the space-time distribution of absorption-line systems (ALSs) observed in QSO spectra within the cosmological redshift interval $z$=0.0--3.7 is carried out on the base of our catalog of absorption systems (Ryabinkov et al. 2003). We confirm our previous conclusion that the $z$-distribution of absorbing matter contains non-uniform component displaying a pattern of statistically significant alternating maxima (peaks) and minima (dips). Using the wavelet transformation we determine the positions of the maxima and minima and estimate their statistical significance. The po…
It was previously shown from the redshifts and positions of the compact, high-redshift objects near the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 that they appear to have been ejected from the center of the galaxy in at least four similarly structured triplets. Here some of the consequences of assuming such a local model for QSOs are examined. From the ages of the ejection events it is found that in a relatively short time (10 - 100 million years) the intrinsic redshift component in these objects disappears and their luminosity increases to a value close to that of a normal galaxy. This period may then determin…
Spectroscopy of QSO absorption lines provides essential observational input for the study of nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution of galaxies at high redshift. But new observations may indicate that present chemical abundance data are biased due to deficient spectral resolution and unknown selection effects: Recent high-resolution spectra reveal the hitherto unperceived chemical nonuniformity of a molecule-bearing damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system, and the still ongoing H/ESO DLA survey produces convincing evidence for the effect of dust attenuation. We present a revised analysis of the molecu…
This is the first paper in a series aimed at defining a statistically significant sample of QSOs in the range $ 15 < B < 18.75$ and $ 0.3 < z < 2.2$. The selection is carried out using direct plates obtained at the ESO and UK Schmidt Telescopes, scanned with the COSMOS facility and searched for objects with an ultraviolet excess. Follow-up spectroscopy, carried out at ESO La Silla, is used to classify each candidate. In this initial paper, we describe the scientific objectives of the survey; the selection and observing techniques used. We present the first sample of 285 QSOs ($M_B < -23$) in a…
QSO absorption spectra provide an extremely useful probe of possible cosmological variation in various physical constants. Comparison of H I 21cm absorption with corresponding molecular (rotational) absorption spectra allows us to constrain variation in y=alpha^2*g_p where alpha is the fine structure constant and g_p is the proton g-factor. We analyse spectra of two QSOs, PKS 1413+135 and TXS 0218+357, and derive values of dy/y at absorption redshifts of z=0.2467 and 0.6847 by simultaneous fitting of the H I 21cm and molecular lines. We find dy/y=(-0.20 +/- 0.44)*10^{-5} and dy/y=(-0.16 +/- 0.…
Observations of absorption systems in close, multiple lines of sight to gravitationally lensed QSOs can be used to infer the density fluctuations and motions of the gas clouds giving rise to the Lyman alpha forest phenomenon and to QSO metal absorption lines. We describe a survey of lensed QSOs with the Keck HIRES instrument and argue that one can derive limits on the frequency and importance of hydrodynamical disturbances inflicted by galaxies on the surrounding gas from such data. We discuss differences between the kinematic properties of low density unsaturated Lyman alpha forest absorption…
Gravitational lensing of an optical QSO by a spiral galaxy is often counteracted by dust obscuration, since the line-of-sight to the QSO passes close to the center of the galactic disk. The dust in the lens is likely to be correlated with neutral hydrogen, which in turn should leave a Lyman-alpha absorption signature on the QSO spectrum. We use the estimated dust-to-gas ratio of the Milky-Way galaxy as a mean and allow a spread in its values to calculate the effects of dust on lensing by low redshift spiral galaxies. Using a no-evolution model for spirals at z<1 we find (in Lambda=0 cosmologie…
(abridged) We take advantage of the deep Chandra and Spitzer coverage of a large area (more than 10 times the area covered by the Chandra deep fields, CDFs in the COSMOS field, to extend the search of highly obscured, Compton-thick active nuclei to higher luminosity. These sources have low surface density and large samples can be provided only through large area surveys, like the COSMOS survey. We analyze the X-ray properties of COSMOS MIPS sources with 24$μ$m fluxes higher than 550$μ$Jy. For the MIPS sources not directly detected in the Chandra images we produce stacked images in soft and har…
High-resolution UV spectroscopy of low-z QSOs with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer has indicated that O VI absorption-line systems provide a valuable probe of the low-z intergalactic medium. These observations and their implications are briefly reviewed. Though still uncertain due to the small sample, the number of O VI absorbers per unit redshift is quite high, and these absorbers appear to trace an important baryon reservoir. The O VI systems are intervening; they are highly displaced from the background QSO redshifts and are correlated…
A comprehensive set of all available magnitudes, colors and redshifts for optically identified QSO absorbers is compiled from the literature. This results in a largely unbiased sample of galaxies at high redshifts, the size of the sample being reasonably large to allow for a first comparison with galaxy evolution models. We use our evolutionary spectral synthesis models describing various spectral types of galaxies with appropriate star formation histories. For a standard cosmology H0=50, Omega0=1, we find that all identified QSO absorbers up to a redshift about z=2 do fall within the evolving…
The evolution of luminous QSOs is linked to the evolution of massive galaxies. We know this because the relic black-holes found locally have masses dependent on the properties of the host galaxy's bulge. An important way to explore this evolution would be to measure dependences of black hole masses and Eddington accretion ratios over a range of redshifts, i.e., with cosmological age. For low redshift QSOs (and their lower luminosity Seyfert galaxy counterparts) it has been possible to infer black hole masses from the luminosities and velocity dispersions of their host-galaxy bulges. These mass…
The QSO luminosity function at z>5 provides strong constraints on models of joint evolution of QSO and their hosts. However, these observations are challenging because the low space densities of these objects necessitate surveying of large areas, in order to obtain statistically meaningful samples, while at the same time cosmological redshifting and dimming means that rather deep Near Infrared (NIR) imaging must be carried out. Several upcoming and proposed facilities with wide-field NIR imaging capabilities will open up this new region of parameter space. In this paper we present predictions …
We present the final catalogue of the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ), based on Anglo-Australian Telescope 2dF spectroscopic observations of 44576 colour-selected (u b_J r) objects with 18.25<b_J<20.85 selected from APM scans of UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) photographic plates. The 2QZ comprises 23338 QSOs, 12292 galactic stars (including 2071 white dwarfs) and 4558 compact narrow-emission-line galaxies. We obtained a reliable spectroscopic identification for 86 per cent of objects observed with 2dF. We also report on the 6dF QSO Redshift Survey (6QZ), based on UKST 6dF observations of 1564 brigh…
We have conducted the first survey for Oxygen VI $λλ1032,1038$ absorption lines in QSO spectra. We used medium resolution ($R \approx 1300$) high signal-to-noise ($\approx 20$) Faint Object Spectrograph spectra of 11 QSOs ($0.53\leq$\zem$\leq2.08$) from the Hubble Space Telescope Archive. We use simulated spectra to determine the significance of the line identifications, which lie exclusively in the \Lya forest. We found 12 O~VI doublets of which 9 are expected to be real and 6 constitute a uniform sample with both lines exceeding a rest equivalent width of $W_r =0.21$ Å. The number of O~VI do…
Comparison of quasar absorption line spectra with laboratory spectra provides a precise probe for variability of the fine structure constant, alpha, over cosmological time-scales. We constrain variation in alpha in 21 Keck/HIRES Si IV absorption systems using the alkali doublet (AD) method in which changes in alpha are related to changes in the doublet spacing. The precision obtained with the AD method has been increased by a factor of 3: da/a = (-0.5 +/- 1.3) * 10^{-5}. We also analyse potential systematic errors in this result. Finally, we compare the AD method with the many-multiplet method…
Comparison of quasar absorption spectra with laboratory spectra allow us to probe possible variations in the fundamental constants over cosmological time-scales. In a companion paper we present an analysis of Keck/HIRES spectra and report possible evidence suggesting that the fine structure constant, alpha, may have been smaller in the past: da/a = (-0.72 +/- 0.18) * 10^{-5} over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 3.5. In this paper we describe a comprehensive investigation into possible systematic effects. Most of these do not significantly influence our results. When we correct for those which do …
We present a method to recover the shape and amplitude of the power spectrum of mass fluctuations, P(k), from observations of the high redshift \lya forest. The method is motivated by the physical picture of the \lya forest that has emerged from hydrodynamic cosmological simulations and related semi-analytic models, which predicts a tight correlation between the \lya optical depth and the underlying matter density. We monotonically map the QSO spectrum to a Gaussian density field, measure its 3-d P(k), and normalize by evolving cosmological simulations with this P(k) until they reproduce the o…
Recent highly sensitive detections of line emission from extended gas in the local universe demonstrate the feasibility of detecting H$α$ emitting galactic halos out to $z\sim1$. We determine the form of the surface brightness vs. redshift dependence which takes into account UV background evolution. Successful detections will have a major impact on a wide range of fields, in particular, the source of ionization in QSO absorption systems.
We study clustering on very large scales -- from several tens to hundreds of comoving Mpc -- using an extensive catalog of heavy-element QSO absorption-line systems. We find significant evidence that C IV absorbers are clustered on comoving scales of 100 $h^{-1}$ Mpc ($q_0=0.5$) and less. The superclustering is present even at high redshift ($z\sim 3$); furthermore, it does not appear that the superclustering scale (comoving) has changed significantly since then. Our estimate of that scale increases to 240 $h^{-1}$ Mpc if $q_0=0.1$, which is larger than the largest scales of clustering seen at…
We identify a concordant model for the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift z=1.9 that uses popular values for cosmological and astrophysical parameters and accounts for all baryons with an uncertainty of 6%. We have measured the amount of absorption, DA, in the Ly-alpha forest at redshift 1.9 in spectra of 77 QSO from the Kast spectrograph. We calibrated the continuum fits with realistic artificial spectra, and we found that averaged over all 77 QSOs the mean continuum level is within 1-2% of the correct value. Absorption from all lines in the Ly-alpha forest at z=1.9 removes DA=15.1 +/- 0.…
We present HST spectra for a sample of six QSOs with intermediate redshift (z_a < 1) damped Ly-alpha systems. These observations aim at measuring the HI column density and detect metal lines in order to investigate the metal enrichment of the gas, as well as the presence of neutral species, molecules and dust. All systems selected on the basis of 21 cm absorption and/or strong FeII lines relative to MgII ones turn out to have N(HI) larger than 10^20 cm-2. It appears that although the scatter of metallicities is as large at z_a<1 as at high redshift, an increasing proportion of systems with met…
