In this contribution two recent analyses for the extraction of the charm quark mass are discussed. Although they rely on completely different experimental and theoretical input the two methods provide the same final results for the charm quark mass and have an uncertainty of about 1%.
The coherence factor and average strong phase difference of D0 and D0bar decay amplitudes to the same final state play an important role in the precision determination of the CKM parameter gamma using B- -> DK- and related decay modes. So far, this important input from the charm sector could only be obtained from measurements based on quantum-correlated DDbar pairs produced at the charm threshold. We propose to constrain these parameters using charm mixing, using the large charm samples available at the B factories and LHCb. We demonstrate for the example of D0->Kpipipi that a substantial impr…
Using the new non-analytic reconstruction method obtained from Mellin-Barnes properties, one can extract the value $m_c(\bar{\text{MS}}) = 1.12 \pm 0.08 \;\; \text{GeV}$ from experimental data of the radiation-corrected measured hadronic cross section to the calculated lowest-order cross section for muon pair production in the heavy-quark approximation.
In this QCD analysis, we investigate the impact of recent measurements of heavy-flavor charm and beauty cross sections data sets on the simultaneous determination of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) and the strong coupling, $α_s(M^2_Z)$. We perform three different fits based on Variable-Flavour Number Scheme (VFNS) at the Leading Order (LO) and Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) and choose the full HERA run I and II combined data as a new measurement of inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) cross sections for our base data set. We show that including charm and beauty cross sections data reduc…
A finite-energy sum-rule is presented that allows for the use of combinations of both positive- and inverse-moment integration kernels. The freedom afforded from being able to employ this large class of integration kernels in our sum-rule is then exploited to obtain the values of the charm and bottom masses with minimum total uncertainty. We obtain as our final results m_c(3 GeV)=986(13) MeV and m_b(10 GeV)=3617(25) MeV, which are amongst the most precise values of these parameters obtained by any method.
We study the impact of recent measurements of charm cross section H1-ZEUS combined data on simultaneous determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the strong coupling, $α_s(M^2_Z)$, in two different schemes. We perform several fits based on Thorne-Roberts (RT) and Thorne-Roberts optimal (RTOPT) schemes at next-to-leading order (NLO). We show that adding charm cross section H1-ZEUS combined data reduces the uncertainty of the gluon distribution and improves the fit quality up to $\sim 0.4$~\% and $\sim 0.9$~\%~, without and with the charm contribution, from the RT scheme to the R…
This talk consists of two parts. We first present a light-cone QCD sum rule computation of the $B_s\to f_0(980)$ form factors which are necessary inputs in semileptonic and nonleptonic $B_s$ decays into $f_0(980)$. Then we analyze nonleptonic $B_s$ decays into a charmonium state and a light meson, which are potentially useful to access the $B_s$-${\bar B}_s$ mixing phase $β_s$. We explore the experimental feasibility of measuring these various channels, paying attention to different determinations of $β_s$ in view of the hints of new physics recently emerged in the $B_s$ sector.
Recent theoretical and experimental improvements in the determination of charm and bottom quark masses are discussed. The final results, $m_c(3 \text{GeV})=986(13) $MeV and $m_b(m_b)=4163(16) $MeV represent, together with a closely related lattice determination $m_c(3 {\rm GeV})=986(10) $MeV, the presently most precise determinations of these two fundamental Standard Model parameters. A critical analysis of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties is presented.
We present the summary of the Working Group on lifetimes, mixing and weak mixing phases in charm and beauty mesons at the CKM 2010 workshop. In the past year or so good progress was achieved on both experimental and theoretical sides. While this yields improvement in our understanding of neutral meson mixing, further work is necessary to achieve the highest possible precision in order to investigate current hints for deviations between experiment and standard model predictions. With the recent LHC startup we see bright prospects for the near term future for huge improvements.
Higgs boson production in association with a charm-quark jet proceeds through two different mechanisms - one that involves the charm Yukawa coupling and the other that involves direct Higgs coupling to gluons. The interference of the two contributions requires a helicity flip and, therefore, cannot be computed with massless charm quarks. In this paper, we consider QCD corrections to the interference contribution starting from charm-gluon collisions with massive charm quarks and taking the massless limit, $m_c \to 0$. The behavior of QCD cross sections in that limit differs from expectations ba…
Charm production data from HERA can be used to determine the charm quark mass and jet production data from HERA can be used to detrmine $α_s(M_Z)$. recent results are summarised.
Recent theoretical and experimental improvements in the determination of charm and bottom quark masses are discussed. A new and improved evaluation of the contribution from the gluon condensate $< \frac{α_s}π G^2>$ to the charm mass determination and a detailed study of potential uncertainties in the continuum cross section for $b\bar b$ production is presented, together with a study of the parametric uncertainty from the $α_s$-dependence of our results. The final results, $m_c(3 \text{GeV})=986(13) $MeV and $m_b(m_b)=4163(16) $MeV, represent, together with a closely related lattice determinat…
More precise extractions on the two important CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ are presented up to $1/m_Q^2$ corrections based on the complete heavy quark effective field theory (HQEFT) of QCD. The HQEFT as a large component QCD provides us a complete theoretical framework for correctly and systematically evaluating the subleading and higher order contributions in $1/m_Q$ expansion of heavy quarks. A global analysis on charmless B decays is made based on the isospin and SU(3) flavor symmetry. An isospin relation is found to be very useful for studying SU(3) symmetry breaking effec…
The impact of recent multi-loop calculations on precise determinations of charm- and bottom-quark masses and the strong coupling constant is discussed.
The determination of the charm quark mass is now possible to 1% from QCD, with lattice QCD pushing the error down below 1%. I will describe the ingredients of this approach and how it can achieve this accuracy. Results for quark mass ratios, m_c/m_s and m_b/m_c, can also be determined to 1% from lattice QCD, allowing accuracy for the heavy quark masses to be leveraged into the light quark sector. I will discuss the prospects for, and importance of, improving results in future calculations.
In this paper, we present preliminary results of the determination of the charm quark mass $\hat{m}_c$ from QCD sum rules of moments of the vector current correlator calculated in perturbative QCD at ${\cal O} (\hat α_s^3)$. Self-consistency between two different sum rules allow to determine the continuum contribution to the moments without requiring experimental input, except for the charm resonances below the continuum threshold. The existing experimental data from the continuum region is used, then, to confront the theoretical determination and reassess the theoretic uncertainty.
In this paper we compare recent experimental data for the total cross section $σ(e^+e^-\to{hadrons})$ with the up-to-date theoretical prediction of perturbative QCD for those energies where perturbation theory is reliable. The excellent agreement suggests the determination of the strong coupling $α_s$ from the measurements in the continuum. The precise data from the charm threshold region, when combined with the recent evaluation of moments with three loop accurracy, lead to a direct determination of the short distance $\bar{\rm MS}$ charm quark mass. Our result for the strong coupling constan…
U-spin multiplet approach is applied to the full set of charmless hadronic B+/- --> M0 M+/- decays for the purpose of precise extraction of the unitarity angle gamma. Each of the four data sets, P0 P+/-, P0 V+/-, V0 P+/- and V0 V+/-, with P = pseudoscalar and V = vector, can be used to yield a precise value of gamma. The crucial advantage of this method over the common SU(3) symmetry based quark-diagrammatic approach is that no assumptions regarding relative sizes of topological decay amplitudes need to be made. As a result, this method avoids an uncontrollable theoretical uncertainty that is …
We determine the charm-quark mass mc(mc) in the MS-bar scheme using measurements of charm production in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA in the kinematic range of photon virtuality from 5 to 1000 GeV squared and Bjorken scaling variable from 0.0001 to 0.5. The extraction of charm quark mass from this process with space-like kinematics provides complementary information to results from hadronic processes. The QCD analysis of the HERA data yields a value of mc(mc) of 1.27 plus minus 0.05(exp) plus 0.06 minus 0.01(scale) GeV at next-to-leading order and mc(mc) of 1.36 plus minus 0.04(exp) plu…
The non-perturbative nature of QCD at hadronic scales implied the development of phenomenological approaches such as quark models or, more recently, computer-based calculations using Lattice QCD. However, the unique properties of heavy quarkonium systems allow an entire calculation in terms of non-relativistic perturbative QCD. In this work, the bottomonium spectrum, up to $n = 3$, and the ground state charmonium states, are analyzed in the framework of Non-Relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics at N$^3$LO. For bottomonium, finite charm quark mass effects in the QCD potential and the $\overline{M…
New data for the total cross section sigma(e^+e^- --> hadrons) in the charm and bottom threshold region are combined with an improved theoretical analysis, which includes recent four-loop calculations, to determine the short distance \bar{MS} charm and bottom quark masses. The final result for the \bar{MS}-masses, m_c(3 GeV)=0.986(13) GeV and m_b(10 GeV)=3.609(25) GeV is consistent with but significantly more precise than a similar previous study.
We update determination of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ masses of the charm and bottom quarks, from comparisons of the masses of the charmonium and bottomonium $1S$ states with their perturbative predictions up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in $\varepsilon$ expansion and using the $\overline{\rm MS}$ masses. Effects of non-zero charm-quark mass in the bottomonium masses are incorporated up to next-to-next-to-leading order. We obtain $\overline m_c=1246\pm 2 (d_3) \pm 4 (α_s) \pm 23 (\text{h.o.} )~{\rm MeV} $ and $\overline m_b=4197\pm 2 (d_3) \pm 6 (α_s) \pm 20 (\text{h.o.} )\pm 5 (m_c)~…
We perform a model dependent fit to recent data on charmless hadronic B decays and determine $γ$, the phase of $V^*_{ub}$. We find $γ= 114^{+25}_{-21}$ degrees, which disfavors the often quoted $γ\sim 60^\circ$ at the two standard deviation level. We also fit for the form factors $F_0^{Bπ}$ and $A_0^{Bρ}$, and the strange-quark mass. They are consistent with theoretical expectations, although $m_s$ is somewhat low. Such agreement and the good $χ^2$ for the fit may be interpreted as a confirmation of the adequacy of our model assumptions.
An update is given of the determination of leptonic decay constants of charm and beauty mesons in the framework of relativistic Hilbert moments and Laplace transform QCD sum rules.
The small-$x$ gluon in global fits of parton distributions is affected by large uncertainties from the lack of direct experimental constraints. In this work we provide a precision determination of the small-$x$ gluon from the exploitation of forward charm production data provided by LHCb for three different centre-of-mass (CoM) energies: 5~TeV, 7~TeV and 13~TeV. The LHCb measurements are included in the PDF fit by means of normalized distributions and cross-section ratios between data taken at different CoM values, $R_{13/7}$ and $R_{13/5}$. We demonstrate that forward charm production leads t…
The charm quark mass is one of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model Lagrangian. In this work we present a determination of the MSbar charm mass from a fit to the inclusive and charm HERA deep-inelastic structure function data. The analysis is performed within the xFitter framework, with structure functions computed in the FONLL general-mass scheme as implemented in APFEL. In the case of the FONLL-C scheme, we obtain mc(mc) = 1.335 +- 0.043(exp) +0.019 -0.000(param) +0.011 -0.008(mod) +0.033 -0.008(th) GeV. We also perform an analogous determination in the fixed-flavor-number scheme…
We determine the MS-bar charm quark mass from a charmonium QCD sum rules analysis. On the theoretical side we use input from perturbation theory at O(alpha_s^3). Improvements with respect to previous O(alpha_s^3) analyses include (1) an account of all available e+e- hadronic cross section data and (2) a thorough analysis of perturbative uncertainties. Using a data clustering method to combine hadronic cross section data sets from different measurements we demonstrate that using all available experimental data up to c.m. energies of 10.538 GeV allows for determinations of experimental moments a…
Two-body charmless nonleptonic decays of $B_u \to V V$ are studied within the generalized factorization approach using a recent calculation of the effective Wilson coefficients $c^{eff}_i$, which are not only renormalization-scale and -scheme independent but also gauge invariant and infrared finite. After making a universal ansatz for the nonfactorizable contributions, we parametrize these effects in terms of $N_c^{eff}(LL)$ and $N_c^{eff}(LR)$, the effective numbers of colors arising from $(V-A)(V-A)$ and $(V-A)(V+A)$ four-quark operators, respectively. Three different schemes for these contr…
We update the experimental moments for the charm quark as computed in arXiv:hep-ph/0702103. and used in arXiv:0907.2110 and arXiv:1010.6157 for the determination of the charm-quark mass. The new value for the MSbar charm-quark mass reads mc(3GeV)=0.993+/-0.008 GeV.
Using new four-loop results for the heavy quark vacuum polarization and new data for bottom quark production in electron-positron annihilation, an update on the determination of charm- and bottom-quark masses through sum rules has been performed. The previous result for the charm-quark mass, $m_c(3 {\rm GeV})= 0.986(13) {\rm GeV}$, based on the lowest moment, is supported by the new results from higher moments which lead to consistent values with comparable errors. The new value for the bottom quark, $m_b(10 {\rm GeV})= 3.610(16) {\rm GeV}$, corresponding to $m_b(m_b)= 4.163(16) {\rm GeV}$, ma…
This paper reports on the determination of $α_S$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. A high-statistics sample of gauge configurations, used to evaluate the coupling from ghost and gluon propagators, allows for the appropriate update of previous results, now performing an improved analysis of data with reduced statistical errors and the systematical uncertainties under a better control.
We present an unbiased determination of the charm content of the proton, in which the charm parton distribution function (PDF) is parametrized on the same footing as the light quarks and the gluon in a global PDF analysis. This determination relies on the calculation of deep-inelastic structure functions in the FONLL scheme, generalized to account for massive charm-initiated contributions. In contrast to the usual situation in which the charm PDF is assumed to be generated perturbatively by pair radiation off gluons and light quarks, vanishing at a scale set by the value of the charm mass m_c,…
The harmonic quarks and their complete oscillators are presenting the unprecedented exact solution for the mass spectrum of mesons with an explicit charm. The experimental and calculated spectrums coincide with standard deviation in 1.8 MeV. The four doublets and experimental errors of meson masses give the main contribution in this value. The harmonic spectrum is not sensitive to an isospin. The spectrum is simple, complete, precise and logically clear. It's easy to make predictions. The spectrum has not free parameters. It's supposed that the spectrum of harmonic and mixed levels is an exter…
A detailed error analysis is carried out for the determination of the MSbar charm quark mass $\bar m_c(\bar m_c)$ from moments at order alpha_s^2 of the charm cross section in e^+e^- annihilation. To estimate the theoretical uncertainties the renormalization scale is implemented in various ways including energy-dependent functions, which lead to ``contour-improved'' predictions. We obtain $\bar m_c(\bar m_c)=1.29\pm 0.07$ GeV which contains a substantial theoretical uncertainty.
In these proceedings we discuss the relation between the kinetic and the on-shell schemes for the bottom and the charm quarks and present the methods for the calculation of the mass relation to higher orders in perturbative QCD. The bottom mass in the kinetic scheme is a pivotal input parameter in the inclusive determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from $B\to X_c \ell ν_\ell$ decays. By combining the relation between the kinetic and the on-shell mass with well-know results for the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$-on-shell conversion, we obtain a prediction for $m_b^\mathrm{kin}$ based on precise determinations …
We study the scattering of the light-flavor pseudoscalar mesons ($π, K, η$) off the ground-state charmed mesons ($D,D_s$) within chiral effective field theory. The recent lattice simulation results on various scattering lengths and the finite-volume spectra both in the moving and center-of-mass frames, most of which are obtained at unphysical meson masses, are used to constrain the free parameters in our theory. Explicit formulas to include the $S$- and $P$-wave mixing to determine the finite-volume energy levels are provided. After a successful reproduction of the lattice data, we perform a c…
The gluon condensate, $\langle \frac{α_s}π G^2 \rangle$, i.e. the leading order power correction in the operator product expansion of current correlators in QCD at short distances, is determined from $e^+ e^-$ annihilation data in the charm-quark region. This determination is based on finite energy QCD sum rules, weighted by a suitable integration kernel to (i) account for potential quark-hadron duality violations, (ii) enhance the contribution of the well known first two narrow resonances, the $J/ψ$ and the $ψ(2S)$, while quenching substantially the data region beyond, and (iii) reinforce the…
The bottomonium spectrum up to $n = 3$ is studied within Non-Relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics up to N$^3$LO. We consider finite charm quark mass effects both in the QCD potential and the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$-pole mass relation up to third order in the $Υ$-scheme counting. The $u = 1/2$ renormalon of the static potential is canceled by expressing the bottom quark pole mass in terms of the MSR mass. A careful investigation of scale variation reveals that, while $n = 1, 2$ states are well behaved within perturbation theory, $n = 3$ bound states are no longer reliable. We carry out our anal…
The effects of the finite charm quark mass on bottom quark mass determinations from $Υ$ sum rules are examined in detail. The charm quark mass effects are calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order in the non-relativistic power counting for the $Υ$ sum rules and at order $α_s^3$ for the determination of the bottom MSbar mass. For the bottom 1S mass, which is extracted from the $Υ$ sum rules directly, we obtain $M_b^{1S}=4.69\pm 0.03$ GeV with negligible correlation to the value of the strong coupling. For the bottom MSbar mass we obtain $\bar M_b(\bar M_b) = 4.17\pm 0.05$ GeV taking $α_s^{(n_…
We present a lattice determination of the charm quark's mass, using the mass of the D_s meson as experimental input. All errors are under control with the exception of the quenched approximation. Setting the scale with F_K=160 MeV, our final result for the renormalization group invariant (RGI) quark mass is M_c = 1.654(45) GeV, which translates to m_c(m_c) =1.301(34) GeV for the running mass in the MSbar scheme. A 6 percent increase of the RGI quark mass is observed when the scale is set by the nucleon mass. This is a typical quenched scale ambiguity, which is reduced to about 3 percent for m_…
We give an overview of various determinations of $γ/ϕ_3$ with the help of $B_s$ decays into charmed final states, distinguishing between transitions with tree and penguin contributions and pure tree decays. In the corresponding strategies, the $U$-spin flavour symmetry of strong interactions provides a very useful tool, and offers interesting "by-producs" for the $B$-physics programme at the LHC, including the control of the penguin uncertainties in the determinations of the $B^0_d$-$\bar B^0_d$ and $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phases $ϕ_d$ and $ϕ_s$ from $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ and $B_s\to J/ψϕ$, res…
The strong coupling, $α_s$, governs perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and is one of the free parameters of the Standard Model. We introduce a new method that allows a precise extraction of $α_s(m_Z)$ from dimensionless ratios of roots of moments of the charm-quark vector correlator. The ratios we use in our analysis have a rather weak logarithmic quark-mass dependence, starting at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$, and can be obtained from experimental data with good precision, since they benefit from positive correlations among the individual experimentally determined moments. We perform a careful…
In this paper, we discuss the theoretical framework and the experimental measurements of the magnetic moment of the charm baryons. The $Λ_c^+$ magnetic moment is particularly interesting since it is equal to the magnetic moment of the charm quark. The measurements of the magnetic moments of other charm baryons, such as $Ξ_c$, allow to perform detailed spectroscopy studies. The magnetic moment of the $Λ_c$ can be determined using radiative charmonium decay and the present results show a tension with majority of theoretical predictions. As recently pointed out, the magnetic moment of the charm b…
We present results for the light, strange and charm quark masses using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion ensembles at three values of the lattice spacing, including two ensembles simulated with the physical value of the pion mass. The analysis is done both in the meson and baryon sectors. The difference in the mean values found in the two sectors is included as part of the systematic error. The presentation is based on the work of Ref. [1], where more details can be found.
The MSbar charm quark mass is determined to be m_c(m_c)=1224+-17+-54 MeV from a global fit to inclusive B meson decay data, where the first error is experimental, and includes the uncertainty in alpha_s, and the second is an estimate of theoretical uncertainties in the computation. We discuss the implications of the pole mass renormalon in the determination of m_c.
Recent results for charm quark mass effects in perturbative bottom quark mass determinations from $Υ$ mesons are reviewed. The connection between the behavior of light quark mass corrections and the infrared sensitivity of some bottom quark mass definitions is examined in some detail.
The standard determination of the QED coupling on the Z pole is performed using the latest available data for R. The direct application of analytic continuation techniques is found not to improve the accuracy of the value of α(M_Z^2). However they help to resolve an ambiguity in the values of R in the energy region \sqrt{s} < 2 GeV, which, in turn, reduces the uncertainty in α(M_Z^2). Moreover, they provide a sensitive determination of the mass of the charm quark. The favoured solution, which uses the inclusive data for R for \sqrt{s} < 2 GeV, has a pole mass m_c = 1.33-1.40 GeV and α^{-1}(M_Z…
We review several aspects of the phenomenology of P-wave $\bar q Q$ mesons: mass splittings, effective strong couplings and leptonic constants. We also describe a QCD sum rule determination to order $α_s$ of the form factor $τ_{1/2}(y)$ governing the semileptonic $B$ decays to the charm doublet with $J^P=(0^+_{1/2},1^+_{1/2})$.
I discuss advances in the determination of strange, charm, and bottom quark parton distribution functions obtained in the CTEQ6.5 and CTEQ6.6 global analyses. These results affect electroweak precision observables and certain new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider. I focus, in particular, on high-energy implications of the consistent treatment of heavy-quark threshold effects in DIS in the general-mass factorization scheme; an independent parametrization for the strangeness PDF; and the possible presence of nonperturbative ("intrinsic") charm.
QCD sum rules involving mixed inverse moment integration kernels are used in order to determine the running charm-quark mass in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. Both the high and the low energy expansion of the vector current correlator are involved in this determination. The optimal integration kernel turns out to be of the form $p(s) = 1 - (s_0/s)^2$, where $s_0$ is the onset of perturbative QCD. This kernel enhances the contribution of the well known narrow resonances, and reduces the impact of the data in the range $s \simeq 20 - 25 GeV^2$. This feature leads to a substantial reduction in the sensit…
The recent $F_2$ data can be described using the DGLAP evolution equations with an appropriate choice of input distributions and the choice of the starting scale for the $Q^2$ evolution. We demonstrate in this paper that we cannot conclude that there are no significant shadowing corrections at HERA kinematic region using $F_2$ data only. In this paper we calculate the shadowing corrections to the longitudinal structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ and to the charm component of the proton structure function $F_2^c(x,Q^2)$ at HERA kinematic region using an eikonal approach. We demonstrate that the shad…
We use lattice QCD simulations, with MILC gluon configurations and HISQ c-quark propagators, to make very precise determinations of moments of charm-quark pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector correlators. These moments are combined with new four-loop results from continuum perturbation theory to obtain several new determinations of the MSbar mass of the charm quark and of the MSbar coupling. We find m_c(3GeV)=0.986(10)GeV, or, equivalently, m_c(m_c)=1.268(9)GeV, both for n_f=4 flavors; and alpha_msb(3GeV,n_f=4)=0.251(6), or, equivalently, alpha_\msb(M_Z,n_f=5)=0.1174(12). The new mass agrees …
We present a new, amplitude model-independent method to measure the CP violation parameter $γ$ in $B^- \to DK^-$ and related decays. Information on charm interference parameters, usually obtained from charm threshold data, is obtained from charm mixing. By splitting the phase space of the $D$ meson decay into several bins, enough information can be gained to measure $γ$ without input from the charm threshold. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach with a simulation study of $B^- \to DK^-$ with $D \to K^+ π^- π^+ π^-$. We compare the performance of our novel approach to that of a previ…
Charm production as related to the determination of the strange sea density in deep inelastic charged current processes is studied predominantly in the framework of the $\overline{\rm{MS}}$ fixed flavor factorization scheme. Perturbative stability within this formalism is demonstrated. The compatibility of recent next-to-leading order strange quark distributions with the available dimuon and $F^{νN}_2$ data is investigated. It is shown that final conclusions concerning these distributions afford further analyses of presently available and/or forthcoming neutrino data.
While the standard model is the most successfully theory to describe all interactions and constituents in elementary particle physics, it has been constantly examined for over four decades. Weak decays of charm quarks can measure the coupling strength of quarks in different families and serve as an ideal probe for CP violation. As the lowest charm-strange baryons with three different flavors, $Ξ_c$ baryons (made of $csu$ or $csd$) have been extensively studied in experiments at the large hadron collider and in electron-positron collision. However the lack of reliable knowledge in theory become…
We propose an empirical model to determine the form of energy loss of charm quarks due to multiple scatterings in quark gluon plasma by demanding a good description of production of D mesons and non-photonic electrons in relativistic collision of heavy nuclei at RHIC and LHC energies. Best results are obtained when we approximate the momentum loss per collision $Δp_T \propto α\, p_T$, where $α$ is a constant depending on the centrality and the centre of mass energy. Comparing our results with those obtained earlier for drag coefficients estimated using Langevin equation for heavy quarks we fin…
We summarize the current status of the determination of the CKM matrix elements |V_ud| and |V_us|, which is at the precision frontier of CKM phenomenology. We also review recent progress on the study of charm (semi)leptonic decays, and the determination of |V_cd| and |V_cs|.
A second order, $O(α^2_s)$, calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics is presented of the longitudinal spin dependence of the cross section for the two particle inclusive reaction $p + p \to γ+ c + X$ for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Differential distributions are provided for the spin-averaged cross section and for the two-spin longitudinal polarization asymmetry $A_{LL}$ at the energy of the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. An assessment is given of the prospects for determination of the spin dependence of the charm quark d…
A method for a direct measurement of the exclusive D_s branching ratios and of the decay constant f_{D_s} with a systematical error better than 5% is presented. The approach is based on the peculiar vertex topology of the anti-neutrino induced diffractive charm events. The statistical accuracy achievable with a neutrino factory is estimated.
