We calculate the real-time-correlation function of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model in a transverse field. Using a careful analysis of the perturbative expansion of the functional-integral representation, we derive the asymptotic form of the correlation function. In contrast to the previous works, we find for large transverse field a power-law decay of the correlation with time $t$ as $t^{-3/2}$ at zero temperature and $t^{-2}$ at infinite temperature. At the small field region, we also find a significant change in the correlation which comes from the structural difference between two paramagnetic phases.
We investigate the question of temperature chaos in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model, applying to existing Monte Carlo data a recently proposed rare events based data analysis method. Thanks to this new method, temperature chaos is now observable for this model, even with the limited size systems that can be currently simulated.
Using a variant of the interpolating Hamiltonian technique, we show that there exists, in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass, an exact connection between the sample-to-sample fluctuations of the free energy and bond chaos involving 2- and 4-replica overlaps between replicas with different but correlated bonds. This relation is used to derive an upper bound of the fluctuations.
We consider the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and we prove that the thermodynamic limit of the quenched free energy per site is strictly greater than the corresponding replica symmetric approximation, for all values of the temperature and of the magnetic field below the Almeida-Thouless line. This is based on recent rigorous bounds by F. Guerra, relating the true free energy of the system to the Parisi solution with replica symmetry breaking.
The sample-to-sample fluctuations Delta F_N of the free energy in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model are shown rigorously to be related to bond chaos. Via this connection, the fluctuations become analytically accessible by replica methods. The replica calculation for bond chaos shows that the exponent mu governing the growth of the fluctuations with system size N, i.e. Delta F_N N^mu, is bounded by mu <= 1/4.
We prove the existence of chaos in temperature in the Sherringhton-Kirkpatrick model. The effect is exceedingly small, namely of the ninth order in perturbation theory. The equations describing two systems at different temperatures constrained to have a fixed overlap are studied analytically and numerically, yielding information about the behaviour of the overlap distribution function $P_{T_1,T_2}(q)$ in finite-size systems.
A detailed numerical study is made of relaxation at equilibrium in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Ising spin glass model, at and above the critical temperature Tg. The data show a long time stretched exponential relaxation q(t) ~ exp[-(t/tau(T))^beta(T)] with an exponent beta(T) tending to ~ 1/3 at Tg. The results are compared to those which were observed by Ogielski in the 3d ISG model, and are discussed in terms of a phase space percolation transition scenario.
Numerical data on the probability distribution of the equilibrium relaxation time of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model are obtained by means of dynamical Monte Carlo simulation, for several values of the system size $N$ and temperature $T$. Proper care is taken that the thermal fluctuations on the relaxation time estimates are totally negligible compared to the disorder induced fluctuations. The probability distribution of $\lnτ-\overline{\lnτ}$ scales with the scaling variable $N^{1/3} (T_c-T)$ strengthening the belief that $\overline{\lnτ}\propto N^{1/3}$ in the whole spin glass phase.
We calculate the probability distribution of the overlap between a spin glass and a copy of itself in which the bonds are randomly perturbed in varying degrees. The overlap distribution is shown to go to a delta distribution in the thermodynamic limit for arbitrarily small perturbations (bond chaos) and we obtain the scaling behaviour of the distribution with system size N in the high and low temperature phases and exactly at the critical temperature. The results are relevant for the free energy fluctuations in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model.
We study hysteretic phenomena in random ferromagnets. We argue that the angle dependent magnetostatic (dipolar) terms introduce frustration and long range interactions in these systems. This makes it plausible that the Sherrington - Kirkpatrick model may be able to capture some of the relevant physics of these systems. We use scaling arguments, replica calculations and large scale numerical simulations to characterize the hysteresis of the zero temperature SK model. By constructing the distribution functions of the avalanche sizes, magnetization jumps and local fields, we conclude that the sys…
The relaxational modes and aging of the Glauber dynamics of the mean-field spin-glass model, SK model, are studied by a numerical diagonalization technique and Monte Carlo simulations. We found that the aging process of the model is understood as hierarchical growth of quasi-equilibrium domain in the phase-space.
By numerically solving the Schröedinger equation for small sizes we investigate the quantum critical point of the infinite-range Ising spin glass in a transverse field at zero temperature. Despite its simplicity the method yields accurate information on the value of the critical field and critical exponents. We obtain $Γ_c=1.47\pm 0.01$ and check that exponents are in agreement with analytical approaches.
We present a large-scale simulation of the ground state interface properties of the diluted Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass of Gaussian disorder for a broad range of the bond occupation probability $p$ using the strong disorder renormalization group and the population annealing Monte Carlo methods. We find that the interface is space-filling independent of $p$, i.e., the fractal dimension $d_s=1$. The stiffness exponent $θ$ is likely also independent of $p$, despite that the energy finite-size correction exponent $ω$ varies with $p$ as recently found. The energy finite-size scaling is also …
In this paper we study the bipartite version of Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. We prove that the free energy density is given by an analogue of the Parisi formula, that contains both the usual overlap and an additional new type of overlap. Following Panchenko, we prove the upper bound of the formula by Guerra's replica symmetry breaking interpolation, then the matching lower bound by Ghirlanda-Guerra identities and the Aizenman-Sims-Starr scheme. Based on this result we study the stability of the replica symmetric solution. A new phase exhibiting partial replica symmetry breaking is observed, …
The probability distribution function (PDF) of the ground-state energy in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model is numerically determined by collecting a large statistical sample of ground states, computed using a genetic algorithm. It is shown that the standard deviation of the ground-state energy per spin scales with the number of spins, N, as N^{-ρ} with ρ\simeq 0.765, but the value ρ=3/4 is also compatible with the data, while the previously proposed value ρ=5/6 is ruled out. The PDF satisfies finite-size scaling with a non-Gaussian asymptotic PDF, which can be fitted remarkably wel…
Exact ground states are calculated for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) spin-glass containing up to N=90 spins. A ground-state energy per spin $e^{\infty}_0 = - 0.7637 \pm 0.0004$ is found from the $N$ dependence of the misfit parameter, which is a measure of frustration of the system. The results are compared with those of two related models, which can be introduced by replacing all interactions of the SK model by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ones of the same strengths. A parameter $x$ is introduced, which describes the fraction of antiferromagnetic interactions in these types of models…
We investigate generalized Sherrington--Kirkpatrick glassy systems without reflection symmetry. In the neighbourhood of the transition temperature we in general uncover the structure of the glass state building the full-replica-symmetry breaking solution. Physical example of explicitly constructed solution is given.
Recently Michel Talagrand gave a rigorous proof of the Parisi formula in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. In this paper we build upon the methodology developed by Talagrand and extend his result to the class of SK type models in which the spins have arbitrary prior distribution on a bounded subset of the real line.
Based on the modified Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations a detailed numerical investigation for the complexity of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass is worked out. The data suggest a scaling law which leads to a vanishing of the complexity in the thermodynamic limit as proposed recently. The results for the total number of stable states agree with existing approaches.
Numerical results up to 42nd order of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) are used to predict the singular structure of the SK spin glass at T=0. We confirm predominant single parameter scaling and derive corrections for the T=0 order function q(a), related to a Langevin equation with pseudotime 1/a. a=0 and a=\infty are shown to be two critical points for \infty-RSB, associated with two discrete spectra of Parisi block size ratios, attached to a continuous spectrum. Finite-RSB-size scaling, associated exponents, and T=0-energy are obtained with unprecedented accuracy.
We solve the $S=1/2$ infinite-range random Heisenberg Hamiltonian in the paramagnetic phase using quantum Monte Carlo and analytical techniques. We find that the spin-glass susceptibility diverges at a finite temperature $T_g$ which demonstrates the existence of a low-temperature ordered phase. Quantum fluctuations reduce the critical temperature and the effective Curie constant with respect to their classical values. They also give rise to a redistribution of spectral weight in the dynamic structure factor in the paramagnetic phase. As the temperature decreases the spectrum of magnetic excita…
Using results of a Monte Carlo simulation of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, we try to characterize the slow disorder samples, namely we analyze visually the correlation between the relaxation time for a given disorder sample $J$ with several observables of the system for the same disorder sample. For temperatures below $T_c$ but not too low, fast samples (small relaxation times) are clearly correlated with a small value of the largest eigenvalue of the coupling matrix, a large value of the site averaged local field probability distribution at the origin, or a small value of the squared ove…
The analytic solution to the dynamics of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model was developed in the nineties. It involves directly measurable out of equilibrium quantities, and thus addresses the questions relevant to an experimental system. We here review the out of equilibrium relaxation of this model and how it compares to experimental measurements.
In this paper we prove that in the high temperature region of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model for a typical realization of the disorder the weighted average of spins $\sum_{i\leq N} t_i σ_i$ will be approximately Gaussian provided that $\max_{i\leq N}|t_i|/\sum_{i\leq N} t_i^2$ is small.
In previous work, we have developed a simple method to study the behavior of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field spin glass model for high temperatures, or equivalently for high external fields. The basic idea was to couple two different replicas with a quadratic term, trying to push out the two replica overlap from its replica symmetric value. In the case of zero external field, our results reproduced the well known validity of the annealed approximation, up to the known critical value for the temperature. In the case of nontrivial external field, our method could prove the validity of the…
We investigate the dynamical behavior of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field model of spin glasses by numerical simulation. All the time scales tau we have measured behave like ln(tau) propto N^epsilon, where N is the number of spins and epsilon \simeq 1/3. This is true whether the autocorrelation function used to define tau is sensitive to the full reversal of the system or not.
We study finite-size corrections to the free energy of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass in the low temperature phase. We investigate the role of longitudinal fluctuations in these corrections, neglecting the transverse contribution. In particular, we are interested in the exponent $α$ defined by the relation $f-f_\infty\sim N^{-α}$. We perform both an analytical and numerical estimate of the analytical result for $α$. From both the approaches we get the result: $α=0.8$.
This study focuses on the problem of finding ground states of random instances of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) spin-glass model with Gaussian couplings. While the ground states of SK spin-glass instances can be obtained with branch and bound, the computational complexity of branch and bound yields instances of not more than about 90 spins. We describe several approaches based on the hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm (hBOA) to reliably identifying ground states of SK instances intractable with branch and bound, and present a broad range of empirical results on such problem instan…
In this paper we study the equilibrium statistical mechanical as well as the dynamical properties of a Sherrington and Kirkpatrick model in a multi-bath setting introduced in [4]. We show that the free energy per particle in the thermodynamical limit obeys a variational principle of Parisi type. The relation between the resulting order parameters is discussed.
By using the BRST supersymmetry we compute the quenched complexity of the TAP states in the SK model. We prove that the BRST complexity is equal to the Legendre transform of the static free energy with respect to the largest replica symmetry breaking point of its overlap matrix.
We investigate the finite-size fluctuations due to quenched disorder of the critical temperature of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass. In order to accomplish this task, we perform a finite-size analysis of the spectrum of the susceptibility matrix obtained via the Plefka expansion. By exploiting results from random matrix theory, we obtain that the fluctuations of the critical temperature are described by the Tracy-Widom distribution with a non-trivial scaling exponent 2/3.
We analyze many-body localization (MBL) to delocalization transition in Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model of Ising spin glass (SG) in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. Based on energy resolved analysis, which is of relevance for a closed quantum system, we show that the quantum SK model has many-body mobility edges separating MBL phase which is non-ergodic and non-thermal from the delocalized phase which is ergodic and thermal. The range of the delocalized regime increases with increase in the strength of $Γ$ and eventually for $Γ$ larger than $Γ_{CP}$ the entire many-body spectrum is d…
In a region above the Almeida-Thouless line, where we are able to control the thermodynamic limit of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and to prove replica symmetry, we show that the fluctuations of the overlaps and of the free energy are Gaussian, on the scale N^{-1/2}, for N large. The method we employ is based on the idea, we recently developed, of introducing quadratic coupling between two replicas. The proof makes use of the cavity equations and of concentration of measure inequalities for the free energy.
We analyze the replica-symmetry-breaking construction in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of a spin glass. We present a general scheme for deriving an exact asymptotic behavior near the critical temperature of the solution with an arbitrary number of discrete hierarchies of the broken replica symmetry. We show that all solutions with finite-many hierarchies are unstable and only the scheme with infinite-many hierarchies becomes marginally stable. We show how the solutions from the discrete replica-symmetry-breaking scheme go over to the continuous one with increasing the number of hierarchies…
We propose an iterative construction of solutions of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer-equations for the Sherrington-Kirpatrick model. The iterative scheme is proved to converge exactly up to the de Almayda-Thouless-line. No results on the SK-model itself are derived.
A scaling theory of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the SK-model is presented in the framework of critical phenomena for the scaling regime of small inverse RSB-orders, small temperatures, small magnetic fields, and near opposite pseudo-dynamic limits. We employ the pseudo-dynamical picture (PRL98, 127201 (2007)) with two critical points, where separated temperature- and magnetic field-scaling is obtained. An unconventional scaling hypothesis for the free energy is given, modeling this separated scaling in accordance with detailed numerical self-consistent solutions for up to 200 orders of …
The mean field theory of a spin glass with a specific form of nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions is investigated. Depending on the sign of the interaction matrix chosen we either find the continuous replica symmetry breaking seen in the Sherrington-Kirkpartick model or a one step solution similar to that found in structural glasses. Our results are confirmed by numerical simulations and the link between the type of spin-glass behavior and the density of eigenvalues of the interaction matrix is discussed.
We study hierarchies of replica-symmetry-breaking solutions of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Stationarity equations for order parameters of solutions with an arbitrary number of hierarchies are set and the limit to infinite number of hierarchical levels is discussed. In particular, we demonstrate how the continuous replica-symmetry breaking scheme of Parisi emerges and how the limit to infinite-many hierarchies leads to equations for the order-parameter function of the continuous solution. The general analysis is accompanied by an explicit asymptotic solution near the de Almeida-Thouless …
These notes give an introduction to the physics of the infinite range version of the Edwards--Anderson model, the so-called Sherrington--Kirkpatrick model. In a first part, I motivate and introduce the Edwards--Anderson and Sherrington--Kirkpatrick models. In the second part, I explain the analytical solution of the Sherrington--Kirkpatrick model, following Giorgio Parisi. I next give the physical interpretation of this solution. This is a vast subject, and I concentrate on the major points and give references for more details. The third part presents the simulation approach and compare its re…

We study the phase transition of the free energy in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean-field spin glass model with centered Gaussian external field. We show that the corresponding Almeida-Thouless line is the correct transition curve that distinguishes between the replica symmetric and replica symmetry breaking solutions in the Parisi formula.
We present an extensive numerical study of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in transverse field. Recent numerical studies of quantum spin-glasses have focused on exact diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian for small systems ($\approx$ 20 spins). However, such exact numerical treatments are difficult to apply on larger systems. We propose making an approximation by using only a subspace of the full Hilbert space spanned by low-lying excitations consisting of one-spin flipped and two-spin flipped states. The approximation procedure is carried out within the theoretical framework of Hartree-Fo…
Hysteretic optimization is a heuristic optimization method based on the observation that magnetic samples are driven into a low energy state when demagnetized by an oscillating magnetic field of decreasing amplitude. We show that hysteretic optimization is very good for finding ground states of Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass systems. With this method it is possible to get good statistics for ground state energies for large samples of systems consisting of up to about 2000 spins. The way we estimate error rates may be useful for some other optimization methods as well. Our results show that…
In this work we analyse the Parisi's infinity-replica symmetry breaking solution of the Sherrington - Kirkpatrick model without external field using high order perturbative expansions. The predictions are compared with those obtained from the numerical solution of the infinity-replica symmetry breaking equations which are solved using a new pseudo-spectral code which allows for very accurate results. With this methods we are able to get more insight into the analytical properties of the solutions. We are also able to determine numerically the end-point x_{max} of the plateau of q(x) and find t…
Using the discrete $\pm J$ bond distribution for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass, all ground states for the entire ensemble of the bond disorder are enumerated. Although the combinatorial complexity of the enumeration severely restricts attainable system sizes, here $N\leq9$, some remarkably intricate patterns found in previous studies already emerge. The analysis of the exact ground state frequencies suggests a direct construction of their probability density function. Against expectations, the result suggests that its highly skewed appearance for finite $N$ evolves logarithmically slo…
A careful critical analysis of the complexity, at the annealed level, of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model has been performed. The complexity functional is proved to be always invariant under the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin supersymmetry, disregarding the formulation used to define it. We consider two different saddle points of such functional, one satisfying the supersymmetry [A. Cavagna {\it et al.}, J. Phys. A {\bf 36} (2003) 1175] and the other one breaking it [A.J. Bray and M.A. Moore, J. Phys. C {\bf 13} (1980) L469]. We review the previews studies on the subject, linking different perspec…
We introduce a Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model with the addition of elastic degrees of freedom. The problem is formulated in terms of an effective four-spin Hamiltonian in the pressure ensemble, which can be treated by the replica method. In the replica-symmetric approximation, we analyze the pressure-temperature phase diagram, and obtain expressions for the critical boundaries between the disordered and the ordered (spin-glass and ferromagnetic) phases. The second-order para-ferromagnetic border ends at a tricritical point, beyond which the transition becomes discontinuous. We use th…
We use real replicas within the Thouless, Anderson and Palmer construction to investigate stability of solutions with respect to uniform scalings in the phase space of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. We show that the demand of homogeneity of thermodynamic potentials leads in a natural way to a thermodynamically dependent ultrametric hierarchy of order parameters. The derived hierarchical mean-field equations appear equivalent to the discrete Parisi RSB scheme. The number of hierarchical levels in the construction is fixed by the global thermodynamic homogeneity expressed as generalized de A…
The goal of this paper is to review some of the main ideas that emerged from the attempts to confirm mathematically the predictions of the celebrated Parisi ansatz in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. We try to focus on the big picture while sketching the proofs of only a few selected results, but an interested reader can find most of the missing details in [31] and [44].
The quenched computation of the complexity in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model is presented. A modified Full Replica Symmetry Breaking Ansatz is introduced in order to study the complexity dependence on the free energy. Such an Ansatz corresponds to require Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin supersymmetry. The complexity computed this way is the Legendre transform of the free energy averaged over the quenched disorder. The stability analysis shows that this complexity is inconsistent at any free energy level but the equilibirum one. The further problem of building a physically well defined solution no…
Some recent results concerning the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model are reported. For $T$ near the critical temperature $T_c$, the replica free energy of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model is taken as the starting point of an expansion in powers of $δQ_{ab} = (Q_{ab} - Q_{ab}^{\rm RS})$ about the Replica Symmetric solution $Q_{ab}^{\rm RS}$. The expansion is kept up to 4-th order in $δ{\bm Q}$ where a Parisi solution $Q_{ab} = Q(x)$ emerges, but only if one remains close enough to $T_c$. For $T$ near zero we show how to separate contributions from $x\ll T\ll 1$ where the Hessian maintains the stan…
We present an ansatz for the ground states of the Quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, a paradigmatic model for quantum spin glasses. Our ansatz, based on the concept of generalized coherent states, very well captures the fundamental aspects of the model, including the ground state energy and the position of the spin glass phase transition. It further enables us to study some previously unexplored features, such as the non-vanishing longitudinal field regime and the entanglement structure of the ground states. We find that the ground state entanglement can be captured by a simple ensemble of…
An expansion for the free energy functional of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, around the Replica Symmetric SK solution $Q^{({\rm RS})}_{ab} = δ_{ab} + q(1-δ_{ab})$ is investigated. In particular, when the expansion is truncated to fourth order in. $Q_{ab} - Q^{({\rm RS})}_{ab}$. The Full Replica Symmetry Broken (FRSB) solution is explicitly found but it turns out to exist only in the range of temperature $0.549...\leq T\leq T_c=1$, not including T=0. On the other hand an expansion around the paramagnetic solution $Q^{({\rm PM})}_{ab} = δ_{ab}$ up to fourth order yields a FRSB solution…
We investigate the large deviation behavior of the overlap probability density in the Sherrington--Kirkpatrick model from several analytical perspectives. First we analyze the spin glass phase using the coupled replica scheme. Here generically $\frac1N \log P_N(q)$ $\approx$ $- {\cal A}$ $((|q|-q_{EA})^3$, and we compute the first correction to the expansion of $\A$ in powers of $T_c-T$. We study also the $q=1$ case, where $P(q)$ is know exactly. Finally we study the paramagnetic phase, where exact results valid for all $q$'s are obtained. The overall agreement between the various points of vi…
We propose a simple scaling ansatz for the full replica symmetry breaking solution of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in the low energy sector. This solution is shown to become exact in the limit x->0, x>>T of the Parisi replica symmetry breaking scheme parameter x. The distribution function P(x,y) of the frozen fields y has been known to develop a linear gap at zero temperature. We integrate the scaling equations to find an exact numerical value for the slope of the gap to be 0.3014046... We also use the scaling solution to devise an inexpensive numerical procedure for computing finite time…
We study in detail the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, i.e. the infinite-range Ising spin glass in a transverse field, by solving numerically the effective one-dimensional model that the quantum SK model can be mapped to in the thermodynamic limit. We find that the replica symmetric (RS) solution is unstable down to zero temperature, in contrast to some previous claims, and so there is not only a line of transitions in the (longitudinal) field-temperature plane (the de Almeida-Thouless, AT, line) where replica symmetry is broken, but also a quantum de Almeida-Thouless (QuAT) line i…
