We present stellar proper motions in the Galactic bulge from the Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Search (SWEEPS) project using ACS/WFC on HST. Proper motions are extracted for more than 180,000 objects, with >81,000 measured to accuracy better than 0.3 mas/yr in both coordinates. We report several results based on these measurements: 1. Kinematic separation of bulge from disk allows a sample of >15,000 bulge objects to be extracted based on >6-sigma detections of proper motion, with <0.2% contamination from the disk. This includes the first detection of a candidate bulge Blue Straggler population. 2. Armed with a photometric distance modulus on a star by star basis, and using the large number of stars with high-quality proper motion measurements to overcome intrinsic scatter, we dissect the kinematic properties of the bulge as a function of distance along the line of sight. This allows us to extract the stellar circular speed curve from proper motions alone, which we compare with the circular speed curve obtained from radial velocities. 3. We trace the variation of the {l,b} velocity ellipse as a function of depth. 4. Finally, we use the density-weighted {l,b} proper motion ellipse produced from the tracer stars to assess the kinematic membership of the sixteen transiting planet candidates discovered in the Sagittarius Window; the kinematic distribution of the planet candidates is consistent with that of the disk and bulge stellar populations.
In direct imaging, broad band flat-fields can easily be applied to correct deviation from uniform sensitivity across the detector field. However for slitless spectroscopy data the flat field is both field and wavelength dependent. The effect of the wavelength dependent flat field for the slitless G800L grism mode of the ACS Wide Field Channel (WFC) has been investigated from observations of a flux calibrator at different positions in the field. The results of various flat-fielding schemes are presented including application of a flat field cube derived from in-orbit broad band filter flat fiel…
We propose a zero-point photometric calibration of the data from the ACS/WFC on board the Hubble Space Telescope, based on a spectrum of Vega and the most up to date in-flight transmission curves of the camera. This calibration is accurate at the level of a few hundredths of a magnitude. The main purpose of this effort is to transform the entire set of evolutionary models by Pietrinferni et al. (2004) into a simple observational photometric system for ACS/WFC data, and make them available to the astronomical community. We provide the zero points for the most used ACS/WFC bands, and give basic …
In this paper we analyse very short arcs of minor bodies of the Solar System detected on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Channel ACS images. In particular, we address how to constrain the Keplerian orbital elements for minor body detections, illustrating the method for 2 objects. One of the minor bodies left 13 successive trails, making it the most well-sampled object yet identified in the HST archive. Most interestingly, we also address the problem of ephemeris prediction and show that in the particular case of HST very short arcs the confinement window for subsequent recovery is sign…
[Abridged] When WFC3 is installed on HST, the community will have powerful new tools for investigating resolved stellar populations. The WFC3 Galactic Bulge Treasury program will obtain deep imaging on 4 low-extinction fields. These non-proprietary data will enable a variety of science investigations not possible with previous data sets. To aid in planning for the use of these data and for future proposals, we provide an introduction to the program, its photometric system, and the associated calibration effort. The observing strategy is based upon a new 5-band photometric system spanning the U…
We present extensive tables of bolometric corrections and interstellar extinction coefficients for the WFPC2 and ACS (both WFC and HRC) photometric systems. They are derived from synthetic photometry applied to a database of spectral energy distributions covering a large range of effective temperatures, surface gravity, and metal content. Carbon stars are also considered. The zero-points take into consideration the new high-accuracy Vega fluxes from Bohlin. These tables are employed to transform Padova isochrones into WFPC2 and ACS photometric systems using interstellar extinction coefficients…
We determine the age, metallicity and initial mass function of three clusters, namely NGC 265, K~29, NGC 290, located in the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud. In addition, we derive the history of star formation in the companion fields. We make use of ACS/WFC HST archive data. For the clusters, the age and metallicity are derived fitting the integrated luminosity function with single synthetic stellar population by means of the $χ^2$ minimization. For the companion fields, the history of star formation is derived using the $χ^2$ minimization together with the downhill-simplex method. For…
We describe the details of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys / Wide Field Channel (ACS/WFC) observations of the COSMOS field, including the data calibration and processing procedures. We obtained a total of 583 orbits of HST ACS/WFC imaging in the F814W filter, covering a field that is 1.64 square degrees in area, the largest contiguous field ever imaged with HST. The median exposure depth across the field is 2028 seconds (one HST orbit), achieving a limiting point-source depth AB(F814W) = 27.2 (5 sigma). We also present details about the astrometric image registrati…
We present complimentary techniques to find emission-line targets and measure their properties in a semi-automated fashion from grism observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The first technique is to find all likely sources in a direct image, extract their spectra and search them for emission lines. The second method is to look for emission-line sources as compact structures in an unsharp masked version of the grism image. Using these methods we identify 46 emission-line targets in the Hubble Deep Field North using a modest (3 orbit) expend…
Following a series of deep observations of the Galactic Bulge region performed with the Wide Field Cameras on board BeppoSAX, it has been possible to study throughout a long time period a number of persistent X-ray sources. We report on the behaviour of GRS 1758-258, an X-ray binary suggested as a black hole candidate on the basis of its timing and spectral characteristics. The source has been monitored for almost 2 years since August 1996; preliminary results of the data analysis are shown hereafter.
We describe the time- and position-dependent point spread function (PSF) variation of the Wide Field Channel (WFC) of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) with the principal component analysis (PCA) technique. The time-dependent change is caused by the temporal variation of the $HST$ focus whereas the position-dependent PSF variation in ACS/WFC at a given focus is mainly the result of changes in aberrations and charge diffusion across the detector, which appear as position-dependent changes in elongation of the astigmatic core and blurring of the PSF, respectively. Using >400 archival images …
We report the first results from an imaging program with the ACS camera on HST designed to measure the structural characteristics of a wide range of globular clusters in NGC 5128, the nearest giant elliptical galaxy. From 12 ACS/WFC fields, we have measured a total of 62 previously known globular clusters and have discovered 69 new high-probability cluster candidates not found in any previous work. We present magnitudes and color indices for all of these, along with rough measurements of their effective diameters and ellipticities. The luminosity distribution of this nearly-uncontaminated samp…
Using HST/ACS images in four bands F435W, F606W, F775W and F850LP, we identify optical counterparts to the X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field South in the GOODS South field. A detailed study has been made of these sources to study their morphological types. We use methods like decomposition of galaxy luminosity profiles, color maps and visual inspection of 192 galaxies which are identified as possible optical counterparts of Chandra X-ray sources in the CDFS-GOODS field. We find that most moderate luminosity AGN hosts are bulge dominated in the redshift range (z \approx 0.4-1.3), but not …
(abridged) We examine the spatial and temporal stability of the HST ACS Wide Field Camera (WFC) point spread function (PSF) using the two square degree COSMOS survey. We show that stochastic aliasing of the PSF necessarily occurs during `drizzling'. This aliasing is maximal if the output pixel scale is equal to the input pixel scale of 0.05''. We show that this source of PSF variation can be significantly reduced by choosing a Gaussian drizzle kernel and by setting the output pixel size to 0.03''. We show that the PSF is temporally unstable, most likely due to thermal fluctuations in the teles…
The ability to accurately measure the shapes of faint objects in images taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys(ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) depends upon detailed knowledge of the Point Spread Function (PSF). We show that thermal fluctuations cause the PSF of the ACS Wide Field Camera (WFC) to vary over time. We describe a modified version of the TinyTim PSF modeling software to create artificial grids of stars across the ACS field of view at a range of telescope focus values. These models closely resemble the stars in real ACS images. Using ~10 bright stars in a real image, we …
Colors and magnitudes were determined for 69 chain galaxies, 58 other linear structures, 32 normal edge-on galaxies, and all of their large star formation clumps in the HST ACS field of the Tadpole galaxy. Redshifts of 0.5 to 2 are inferred from comparisons with published color-evolution models. The linear galaxies have no red nuclear bulges like the normal disk galaxies in our field, but the star formation clumps in each have about the same colors and magnitudes. Light profiles along the linear galaxies tend to be flat, unlike the exponential profiles of normal galaxies. Although the most ext…
The ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters, an HST Treasury Project, will deliver high quality, homogeneous photometry of 65 globular clusters. This paper introduces a new collection of stellar evolution tracks and isochrones suitable for analyzing the ACS Survey data. Stellar evolution models were computed at [Fe/H]= -2.5, -2.0, -1.5, -1.0, -0.5, and 0; [alpha/Fe]= -0.2, 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8; and three initial He abundances for masses from 0.1 to 1.8 Msun and ages from 2 to 15 Gyr. Each isochrone spans a wide range in luminosity from Mv~14 up to the tip of the red giant branch. These a…
We present the atlas of protoplanetary disks in the Orion Nebula based on the ACS/WFC images obtained for the HST Treasury Program on the Orion Nebula Cluster. The observations have been carried out in 5 photometric filters nearly equivalent to the standard B, V, Halpha, I, and z passbands. Our master catalog lists 178 externally ionized proto-planetary disks (proplyds), 28 disks seen only in absorption against the bright nebular background (silhouette disks), 8 disks seen only as dark lanes at the midplane of extended polar emission (bipolar nebulae or reflection nebulae) and 5 sources showin…
We analyze the disk M dwarfs found in 31 new fields observed with the Wide Field Camera (WFC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) together with the sample previously analyzed from 22 WFC2 fields and 162 prerepair Planetary Camera (PC1) fields. The new observations, which include the 28 high-latitude fields comprising the Large Area Multi-Color Survey (``Groth Strip''), increase the total sample to 337 stars, and more than double the number of late M dwarfs (M_V>13.5) from 23 to 47. The mass function changes slope at M~0.6 Msun, from a near-Salpeter power-law index of α=-1.21 to α=0.44. In bot…
We have used a combination of high resolution (HST ACS-HRC, ACS-WFC, and WFPC2) and wide-field (ESO-WFI) observations of the galactic globular cluster NGC 6388 to derive its center of gravity, projected density profile, and central surface brightness profile. While the overall projected profiles are well fit by a King model with intermediate concentration (c=1.8) and sizable core radius (rc=7"), a significant power law (with slope α=-0.2) deviation from a flat core behavior has been detected within the inner 1 arcsecond. These properties suggest the presence of a central intermediate mass blac…
In order to assess the accuracy with which we can determine the morphologies of AGN host galaxies, we have simulated more than 50,000 ACS images of galaxies with z < 1.25, using image and noise properties appropriate for the GOODS survey. We test the effect of central point-source brightness on host galaxy parameter recovery with a set of simulated AGN host galaxies made by adding point sources to the centers of normal galaxies. We extend this analysis and also quantify the recovery of intrinsic morphological parameters of AGN host galaxies with a set of fully simulated inactive and AGN host g…
We present results of a morphological analysis of a small subset of the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) galaxy population. The analysis is based on public ACS data taken inside the SWIRE N1 field, which are the deepest optical high-resolution imaging available within the SWIRE fields as of today. Our reference sample includes 156 galaxies detected by both ACS and SWIRE. Among the various galaxy morphologies, we disentangle two main classes, spheroids (or bulge-dominated galaxies) and disk-dominated ones, for which we compute the number counts as a function of flux. We t…
Recent results suggest that z ~ 6 marks the end of the reionization era. A large sample of objects at z ~ 6, therefore, will be of enormous importance, as it will enable us to observationally determine the exact epoch of the reionization and the sources that are responsible for it. With the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) coming on line, we now have an unique opportunity to discover a significant number of objects at z ~ 6. The pure parallel mode implemented for the Wide Field Camera (WFC) has greatly enhanced this ability. We present our preliminary analysis of a deep ACS/WFC parallel f…
We derive the pre-shock density and scale length along the line of sight for the collisionless shock from a deep HST image that resolves the H alpha filament in SN1006 and updated model calculations. The very deep ACS high-resolution image of the Balmer line filament in the northwest (NW) quadrant shows that 0.25 < n_0 < le$ 0.4 cm-3 and that the scale along the line of sight is about 2 x 10^{18} cm, while bright features within the filament correspond to ripples with radii of curvature less than 1/10 that size. The derived densities are within the broad range of earlier density estimates, and…
In hierarchical galaxy formation the stellar halos of galaxies are formed by the accretion of minor satellites and therefore contain valuable information about the (early) assembly process of galaxies. Our GHOSTS survey measures the stellar envelope properties of 14 nearby disk galaxies by imaging their resolved stellar populations with HST/ACS&WFPC2. Most of the massive galaxies in the sample (Vrot>200 km/s) have very extended stellar envelopes with mu(r) ~ r^{-2.5} power law profiles in the outer regions. For these massive galaxies there is some evidence that the stellar surface density of t…
We combine the exceptional depth of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) images and the deep GRism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) grism spectroscopy to explore the stellar populations of 34 bulges belonging to late-type galaxies at z=0.8-1.3. The sample is selected based on the presence of a noticeable 4000A break in their GRAPES spectra, and by visual inspection of the HUDF images. The HUDF images are used to measure bulge color and Sersic index. The narrow extraction of the GRAPES data around the galaxy center enables us to study the spectrum of the bulges in these late-type ga…
We have employed laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) on the Keck II telescope to obtain near-infrared (NIR) images in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) deep galaxy survey field. This is a continuation of our Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) program of targeting 0.5<z<1 galaxies where existing images with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are already in hand. Our AO field has already been imaged by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Near Infared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph (NICMOS). Our AO images at 2.2 microns (K') are comparable in depth to those from H…
We present the photometric calibration of the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). We give here an overview of the performance and calibration of the 2 CCD cameras, the Wide Field Channel (WFC) and the High Resolution Channel (HRC), and a description of the best techniques for reducing ACS CCD data. On-orbit observations of spectrophotometric standard stars have been used to revise the pre-launch estimate of the instrument response curves to best match predicted and observed count rates. Synthetic photometry has been used to determine zeropoints for all filters in 3 magnitude systems and to …
Using HST ACS/WFC images, we derive the color--magnitude diagram of the old, metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 to nearly 29th magnitude in V, which is the neighborhood of the hydrogen-burning limit.Comparison with isochrones leads to a discussion of the distance modulus, the reddening, and the age of the cluster. By making a statistical correction for field stars we derive a preliminary luminosity function, and a very tentative mass function. The white dwarf sequence is clearly shown, and has been discussed in a separate paper.
We studied the morphology of galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South using ACS multi-wavelength data from the Great Observatories Origin Deep Survey and 524 spectroscopic redshifts from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey completed with 2874 photometric redshift computed from COMBO-17 multi-color data. The rest-frame B-band makes it possible to discriminate two morphological types in an asymmetry-concentration diagram: bulge- and disk-dominated galaxies. The rest-frame color index $B-I$ is found to be very correlated with the morphological classification: wholly bulge-dominated galaxies are redder than…
Stellar photometry of about one million stars in the system of the interacting galaxies M51 (NGC5194/NGC5195) has been carried out on the basis of the ACS/WFC images of the Hubble Space telescope. The distance to the system has been determined by TRGB method and metallicity of red supergiants along the NGC5194 radius has been measured. A comparison of the spacial distribution of stars in the main galaxy NGC5194 with our empirical model of spiral galaxies showed their similarity, in spite of interaction in system M51. It has been discovered that the "feathers", arising as a result of the intera…
We have used the ACS camera on HST to obtain (V,I) photometry for 57,000 red-giant stars in the halo of the Leo elliptical NGC 3377. We use this sample of stars to derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for its halo field stars, and comment on its chemical evolution history compared with both larger and smaller E galaxies. Our ACS/WFC field spans a radial range extending from 4 to 18 kpc projected distance from the center of NGC 3377 and thus covers a significant portion of this galaxy's halo. We find that the MDF is broad, reaching a peak at [m/H] ~ -0.6$, but containing virtually…
We present quantitative morphology measurements of a sample of optically selected group galaxies at 0.3 < z < 0.55 using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the GIM2D surface brightness--fitting software package. The group sample is derived from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Redshift survey (CNOC2) and follow-up Magellan spectroscopy. We compare these measurements to a similarly selected group sample from the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC) at 0.05 < z < 0.12. We find that, at both epochs, the group and field fractional bulge lumino…
We derive Fundamental Plane parameters of 15 early-type lens galaxies identified by the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. The size of the sample allows us to investigate for the first time the distribution of lens galaxies in the FP space. After correcting for evolution, we find that lens galaxies occupy a subset of the local FP. The edge-on projection (approximately M vs M/L) is indistinguishable from that of normal early-type galaxies. However -- within the fundamental plane -- the lens galaxies appear to concentrate at the edge of the region populated by normal early-type galaxies. We show tha…
We have detected a transient X-ray source in the M31 bulge through a continuing monitoring campaign with the Chandra ACIS-I camera. The source was detected at R.A.=00:42:33.428 +/- 0.11'', Dec.=+41:17:03.37 +/- 0.11'' in only a single observation taken 2004 May 23. Fortuitous optical HST/ACS imaging of the transient location prior to the X-ray outburst, along with follow-up HST/ACS imaging during and after the outburst, reveals no transient optical source brighter than B (equivalent) = 25.5. The location of the source and its X-ray properties suggest it is a low mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Assum…
(Abridged) Luminous Compact Galaxies (LCGs) (M_B < -20, R_{1/2} < 4.5kpc and EW_{0}(OII) >15Å) constitute one of the most rapidly evolving galaxy populations over the last ~8 Gyr history of the universe. Due to their inherently compact sizes, any detailed quantitative analysis of their morphologies has proved to be difficult in the past. In this work we use the high angular resolution imaging data, from the HST/ACS GOODS survey, to study the quantitative morphology of a complete sample of LCGs in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.2. We have derived structural parameters for a representative sampl…
We present improved values of the three components of the absolute space velocity of the open cluster NGC6791. One HST ACS/WFC field with two-epoch observations provides astrometric measurements of objects in a field containing the cluster center. Identification of 60 background galaxies with sharp nuclei allows us to determine an absolute reference point, and measure the absolute proper motion of the cluster. We find (mu_alpha cos(delta), mu_delta)_J2000.0 = (-0.57+/-0.13, -2.45+/-0.12)mas/yr, and adopt V_rad = -47.1+/-0.7km/s from the average of the published values. Assuming a Galactic pote…
We have obtained snapshot images of a transient X-ray source in M31 from Chandra ACIS-I and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The Chandra position of the X-ray nova was R.A.=00:42:56.038 +/-0.08'', Dec.=+41:12:18.50 +/-0.07''. The transient was active for at least 6 months. Previous observations set an upper limit before the X-ray outburst, demonstrating variability by a factor of >100 and confirming the transient nature of the source. For the first 6 months after the initial detection, the X-ray luminosity was ~6 X 10$^{37}$ erg/s; it then decayed to <5 X 10$…
