We study the directional entropy of rank one Z^d actions. We show that if the sequence of towers generating the action are rectangular in shape, then there is always a direction along which the directional entropy is zero. If the rectangles satisfy a "sub-exponential growth" condition, then we show that the directional entropy is zero in every direction.
We introduce and study the notion of a directional complexity and entropy for maps of degree 1 on the circle. For piecewise affine Markov maps we use symbolic dynamics to relate this complexity to the symbolic complexity. We apply a combinatorial machinery to obtain exact formulas for the directional entropy, to find the maximal directional entropy, and to show that it equals the topological entropy of the map. Keywords: Rotation interval, Space-time window, Directional complexity, Directional entropy;
We study the directional entropy of the dynamical system associated to a $\Z^2$ configuration in a finite alphabet. We show that under local assumptions on the complexity, either every direction has zero topological entropy or some direction is periodic. In particular, we show that all nonexpansive directions in a $\Z^2$ system with the same local assumptions have zero directional entropy.
In this paper, directional sequence entropy and directional Kronecker algebra for $\mathbb{Z}^q$-systems are introduced. The relation between sequence entropy and directional sequence entropy are established. Meanwhile, direcitonal discrete spectrum systems and directional null systems are defined. It is shown that a $\mathbb{Z}^q$-system has directional discrete spectrum if and only if it is directional null. Moreover, it turns out that a $\mathbb{Z}^q$-system has directional discrete spectrum along $q$ linearly independent directions if and only if it has discrete spectrum.
Dynamical systems generated by $d\ge2$ commuting homeomorphisms (topological $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions) contain within them structures on many scales, and in particular contain many actions of $\mathbb{Z}^k$ for $1\le k\le d$. Familiar dynamical invariants for homeomorphisms, like entropy and periodic point data, become more complex and permit multiple definitions. We briefly survey some of these and other related invariants in the setting of algebraic $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions, showing how, even in settings where the natural entropy as a $\mathbb{Z}^d$-action vanishes, a powerful theory of directio…
In this short paper, we compute the directional sequence entropy for of $\mathbb{Z}_+\times \mathbb{Z}$-actions generated by cellular automata and the shift map. Meanwhile, we study the directional dynamics of this system. As a corollary, we prove that there exists a sequence such that for any direction, some of the systems above have positive directional sequence entropy. Moreover, with help of mean ergodic theory for directional weak mixing systems, we obtain a result of number theory about combinatorial numbers.
In this paper, two types of Lyapunov exponents: random Lyapunov exponents and directional Lyapunov exponents, and the corresponding entropies: random entropy and directional entropy, are considered for smooth $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions. The close relation among these quantities are investigated and the formulas of them are given via the Lyapunov exponents of the generators.
Let $Γ$ be a lattice in a simply connected nilpotent Lie group $G$. Given an infinite measure preserving action $T$ of $Γ$ and a "direction" in $G$ (i.e. an element $θ$ of the projective space $P(\goth g)$ of the Lie algebra $\goth g$ of $G$), some notions of recurrence and rigidity for $T$ along $θ$ are introduced. It is shown that the set of recurrent directions $\Cal R(T)$ and the set of rigid directions for $T$ are both $G_δ$. In the case where $G=\Bbb R^d$ and $Γ=\Bbb Z^d$, we prove that (a) for each $G_δ$-subset $Δ$ of $P(\goth g)$ and a countable subset $D\subsetΔ$, there is a rank-one …
We study slow entropy invariants for abelian unipotent actions $U$ on any finite volume homogeneous space $G/Γ$. For every such action we show that the topological slow entropy can be computed directly from the dimension of a special decomposition of $\operatorname{Lie}(G)$ induced by $\operatorname{Lie}(U)$. Moreover, we are able to show that the metric slow entropy of the action coincides with its topological slow entropy. As a corollary, we obtain that the complexity of any abelian horocyclic action is only related to the dimension of $G$. This generalizes the rank one results from [A. Kani…
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group of real rank 1 with finite center, let $Γ$ be a non-uniform lattice in $G$ and $a$ any diagonalizable element in $G$. We investigate the relation between the metric entropy of $a$ acting on the homogeneous space $Γ\backslash G$ and escape of mass. Moreover, we provide bounds on the escaping mass and, as an application, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of orbits (under iteration of $a$) which miss a fixed open set is not full.
An important consequence of the theory of entropy of Z-actions is that the events measurable with respect to the far future coincide (modulo null sets) with those measurable with respect to the distant past, and that measuring the entropy using the past will give the same value as measuring it using the future. In this paper we show that for measures invariant under multiparameter algebraic actions if the entropy attached to coarse Lyapunov foliations fail to display a stronger symmetry property of a similar type this forces the measure to be invariant under non-trivial unipotent groups. Some …
Let $X$ be a compact, geodesically complete, locally CAT(0) space such that the universal cover admits a rank one axis. We prove the Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of geodesics is the unique measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow, which has topological entropy equal to the critical exponent of the Poincaré series.
LLet $f$ be a holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb P^ 2$ of degree $d \geq 2$. We estimate the local directional dimensions of closed positive currents $S$ with respect to ergodic dilating measures $ν$. We infer several applications. The first one shows that the currents $S$ containing a measure of entropy $h\_ν> \log d$ have a directional dimension $>2$, which answers a question by de Thélin-Vigny. The second application asserts that the Dujardin's semi-extremal endomorphisms are close to suspensions of one-dimensional Lattès maps. Finally, we obtain an upper bound for the dimension of the eq…
We determine positive-dimensional G-periodic proper subvarieties of an n-dimensional normal projective variety X under the action of an abelian group G of maximal rank n-1 and of positive entropy. The motivation of the paper is to understand the obstruction for X to be G-equivariant birational to the quotient variety of an abelian variety modulo the action of a finite group.
We study slow entropy in some classes of smooth mixing flows on surfaces. The flows we study can be represented as special flows over irrational rotations and under roof functions which are $C^2$ everywhere except one point (singularity). If the singularity is logarithmic asymmetric (Arnol'd flows) we show that in the scale $a_n(t)=n(logn)^t$ slow entropy equals 1 (the speed of orbit growth is nlogn) for a.e. irrational $α$. If the singularity is of power type ($x^{-γ}$, $γ\in (0,1)$) (Kochergin flows) we show that in the scale $a_n(t)=n^t$ slow entropy equals $1+γ$ for a.e. $α$. We show moreo…
In this article, we consider a closed rank one Riemannian manifold $M$ without focal points. Let $P(t)$ be the set of free-homotopy classes containing a closed geodesic on $M$ with length at most $t$, and $\# P(t)$ its cardinality. We obtain the following Margulis-type asymptotic estimates: \[\lim_{t\to \infty}\#P(t)/\frac{e^{ht}}{ht}=1\] where $h$ is the topological entropy of the geodesic flow. In the appendix, we also show that the unique measure of maximal entropy of the geodesic flow has the Bernoulli property.
