After briefly reviewing the problems associated with non-Abelian monopoles, we turn our attention to the development in our understanding of non-Abelian {\it vortices} in the last several years. In the U(N) model with $N_{f}=N$ flavors in which they were first found, the fluctuations of the orientational modes along the vortex length and in time become strongly coupled at long distances. They effectively reduce to Abelian ANO vortices. We discuss then a very recent work on non-Abelian vortices with $CP^{n-1}\times CP^{r-1}$ orientational moduli, which, unlike the ones so far extensively studied, do not dynamically Abelianize completely. The surviving vortex orientational moduli, fluctuating along the vortex length and in time, gets absorbed by the monopoles at the ends, turning into the dual gauge degrees of freedom for the latter.
Recent development on non-Abeliann vortices and monopoles is reviewed with an emphasis on their relevance on confinement and duality. A very recent construction of non-Abelian vortices which do not dynamically Abelianize is crucial in this context.
Motivated by the correlated monopoles and vortices observed in lattice QCD, using Cho decomposition method and two successive gauge transformations which lead to the observation of configurations that include both monopoles and center vortices simultaneously, we obtain a Lagrangian density that explicitly indicates these two magnetic defects and the interaction between them.
In earlier work with N. Seiberg, we explored connections between monopole operators, the Coulomb branch modulus, and vortices for 3d, N=2 supersymmetric, $U(1)_k$ Chern-Simons matter theories. We here extend the monopole / vortex matching analysis, to theories with general matter electric charges. We verify, for general matter content, that the spin and other quantum numbers of the chiral monopole operators match those of corresponding BPS vortex states, at the top and bottom of the tower associated with quantizing the vortices' Fermion zero modes. There are associated subtleties from non-norm…
We discuss some of the latest results concerning the non-Abelian vortices. The first concerns the construction of non-Abelian BPS vortices based on general gauge groups of the form G= G' x U(1). In particular detailed results about the vortex moduli space have been obtained for G'=SO(N) or USp(2N). The second result is about the "fractional vortices", i.e., vortices of the minimum winding but having substructures in the tension (or flux) density in the transverse plane. Thirdly, we discuss briefly the monopole-vortex complex.
Lattice calculations performed in Abelian gauges give strong evidence that confinement is realized as a dual Meissner effect, implying that the Yang-Mills vacuum consists of a condensate of magnetic monopoles. Alternative lattice caluclations performed in the maximum center gauge give strong support that center vortex configurations are the relevant infrared degrees of freedom responsible for confinement and that the magnetic monopoles are mostly sitting on vortices. In this talk I study the continuum Yang-Mills-theory in Abelian and center gauges. In Polyakov gauge the Pontryagin index of the…
There are three types of monopole in gauge theories with fundamental matter and N=2 supersymmetry broken by a superpotential. There are unconfined 0-monopoles and also 1 and 2-monopoles confined respectively by one or two vortices transforming under distinct components of the unbroken gauge group. If a Fayet-Iliopoulos term is added then there are only 2-monopoles. Monopoles transform in the bifundamental representation of two components of the unbroken gauge symmetry, and if two monopoles share a component they may form a boundstate. Selection rules for this process are found, for example vor…
The vortex picture of confinement is studied. The deconfinement phase transition is explained as a transition from a phase in which vortices percolate to a phase of small vortices. Lattice results are presented in support of this scenario. Furthermore the topological properties of magnetic monopoles and center vortices arising, respectively, in Abelian and center gauges are studied in continuum Yang-Mills-theory. For this purpose the continuum analog of the maximum center gauge is constructed.
This work deals with twinlike models that support topological structures such as kinks, vortices and monopoles. We investigate the equations of motion and develop the first order framework to show how to build distinct models with the same solution and energy density, as required to make them twinlike models. We also investigate how the stability under small fluctuations behaves and introduce the conditions to get the same stability on general grounds. In particular, we study models that support kinks, vortices and monopoles in one, two, and three spatial dimensions, respectively.
The Omega-deformation is a harmonic trap, penning certain excitations near the origin in a manner consistent with supersymmetry. Here we explore the dynamics of BPS monopoles and vortices in such a trap. We pay particular attention to monopoles in the Higgs phase, when they are confined to a vortex string. Unusually for BPS solitons, the mass of these confined monopoles is quadratic in the topological charges. We compute an index theorem to determine the number of collective coordinates of confined monopoles. Despite being restricted to move on a line, we find that they have a rich dynamics. A…
The physics of the bare Seiberg-Witten action, without supersymmetric partners, is considered in the framework of standard Quantum Field Theory. The topological analysis related to the solutions of the Seiberg-Witten equations is performed and the phase structure of the model is analysed.
Non-Abelian BPS vortex solutions are constructed in N=2 theories with gauge groups SO(N)\times U(1). The model has N_f flavors of chiral multiplets in the vector representation of SO(N), and we consider a color-flavor locked vacuum in which the gauge symmetry is completely broken, leaving a global SO(N)_{C+F} diagonal symmetry unbroken. Individual vortices break this symmetry, acquiring continuous non-Abelian orientational moduli. By embedding this model in high-energy theories with a hierarchical symmetry breaking pattern such as SO(N+2) --> SO(N)\times U(1) --> 1, the correspondence between …
We present several analytical solutions of BPS vortices and monopoles in the generalized Abelian Maxwell-Higgs and Yang-Mills-Higgs theories, respectively. These models have recently been extensively studied and several exact solutions have already been obtained in \cite{Casana:2014qfa, Casana:2013lna}. In each theory, the dynamics is controlled by the additional two positive scalar-field-dependent functions, $f(|ϕ|)$ and $w(|ϕ|)$. For the case of vortices, we work in the ordinary symmetry-breaking Higgs potential, while for the case of monopoles we have the ordinary condition of the Prasad-So…
Nonabelian magnetic monopoles of Goddard-Nuyts-Olive-Weinberg type have recently been shown to appear as the dominant infrared degrees of freedom in a class of softly broken ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories in which the gauge group $G$ is broken to various nonabelian subgroups $H $ by an adjoint Higgs VEV. When the low-energy gauge group $H$ is further broken completely by e.g. squark VEVs, the monopoles representing $π_2(G/H)$ are confined by the nonabelian vortices arising from the breaking of $H$, discussed recently (hep-th/0307278). By considering the system with $G=SU(N+1)$, $ H…
We construct the effective theory of intersecting branes and investigate the BPS monopoles in the theory. The monopoles obtained are the generalization of Nielsen-Olesen vortex. We study the properties of the solutions and interpret them as the D0-branes on the brane-intersections.
Effects of mass deformations on 1/2 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) non-Abelian vortices are studied in 4d N=2 supersymmetric U(1) \times SO(2n) and U(1) \times USp(2n) gauge theories, with Nf=2n quark multiplets. The 2d N=(2,2) effective worldsheet sigma models on the Hermitian symmetric spaces SO(2n)/U(n) and USp(2n)/U(n) found recently which describe the low-energy excitations of the orientational moduli of the vortices, are generalized to the respective massive sigma models. The continuous vortex moduli spaces are replaced by a finite number (2^{n-1} or 2^{n}) of vortex solutions. The…
Three closely related issues will be discussed. Magnetic quarks having non-Abelian charges have been found recently to appear as the dominant infrared degrees of freedom in some vacua of softly broken N=2 supersymmetric QCD with SU(n_c) gauge group. Their condensation upon N=1 perturbation causes confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking. We argue that these magnetic quarks can be naturally related to the semiclassical non-Abelian monopoles of the type first discussed by Goddard, Nuyts, Olive and E. Weinberg. We discuss also general properties of non-Abelian vortices and discuss their releva…
We consider Yang-Mills theory on manifolds ${\mathbb R}\times X$ with a $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $X$ of special holonomy admitting gauge instanton equations. Instantons are considered as particle-like solutions in $d+1$ dimensions whose static configurations are concentrated on $X$. We study how they evolve in time when considered as solutions of the Yang-Millsequations on ${\mathbb R}\times X$ with moduli depending on time $t\in{\mathbb R}$. It is shown that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric in the $X$ direction is scaled down, the classical dynamics of slowly moving instanto…
Non-commutative differential geometry allows a scalar field to be regarded as a gauge connection, albeit on a discrete space. We explain how the underlying gauge principle corresponds to the independence of physics on the choice of vacuum state, should it be non-unique. A consequence is that Yang-Mills-Higgs theory can be reformulated as a generalised Yang-Mills gauge theory on Euclidean space with a $Z_2$ internal structure. By extending the Hodge star operation to this non-commutative space, we are able to define the notion of self-duality of the gauge curvature form in arbitrary dimensions.…
We review classical monopole solutions of the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The first part is a pedagogical introduction into to the basic features of the celebrated 't Hooft - Polyakov monopole. In the second part we describe new classes of static axially symmetric solutions which generalise 't Hooft - Polyakov monopole. These configurations are either deformations of the topologically trivial sector or the sectors with different topological charges. In both situations we construct the solutions representing the chains of monopoles and antimonopoles in static equilibrium. The solutions of an…
Non-abelian gauge theories in the Higgs phase admit a startling variety of BPS solitons. These include domain walls, vortex strings, confined monopoles threaded on vortex strings, vortex strings ending on domain walls, monopoles threaded on strings ending on domain walls, and more. After presenting a self-contained review of these objects, including several new results on the dynamics of domain walls, we go on to examine the possible interactions of solitons of various types. We point out the existence of a classical binding energy when the string ends on the domain wall which can be thought o…
Vortices carrying truly non-Abelian flux moduli, which do not dynamically reduce to Abelian vortices, are found in the context of softly-broken ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric chromodynamics (SQCD). By tuning the bare quark masses appropriately we identify the vacuum in which the underlying SU(N) gauge group is partially broken to $SU(n) \times SU(r) \times U(1)/{\mathbbm Z}_{K}$, where $K$ is the least common multiple of $(n, r)$, and with $N_{f}^{su(n)}=n$ and $N_{f}^{su(r)}=r$ flavors of light quark multiplets. At much lower energies the gauge group is broken completely by the squark VEVs, and …
We discuss the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass M and central charge Z of supersymmetric solitons: the kink, the vortex and the monopole. Contrary to previous expectations and published results, in each of these cases there are nonvanishing quantum corrections to the mass. For the N=1 kink and the N=2 monopole a new anomaly in Z rescues BPS saturation (M=Z); for the N=2 vortex, BPS saturation is rescued for two reasons: (i) the quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field acquire a nontrivial phase due to the winding of the classical solution, and (ii) a fermionic zero mode used in the lite…
Certain hyperbolic monopoles and all hyperbolic vortices can be constructed from SO(2) and SO(3) invariant Euclidean instantons, respectively. This observation allows us to describe a large class of hyperbolic monopoles as hyperbolic vortices embedded into $\mathbb{H}^3$ and yields a remarkably simple relation between the two Higgs fields. This correspondence between vortices and monopoles gives new insight into the geometry of the spectral curve and the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles. It also allows an explicit construction of the fields of a hyperbolic monopole invariant under a $\math…
We study spherically and axially symmetric monopoles of the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs-dilaton (EYMHD) system with a new coupling between the dilaton field and the covariant derivative of the Higgs field. This coupling arises in the study of (4+1)-dimensional vortices in the Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) system.
A product of two Riemann surfaces of genuses p_1 and p_2 solves the Seiberg-Witten monopole equations for a constant Weyl spinor that represents a monopole condensate. Self-dual electromagnetic fields require p_1=p_2=p and provide a solution of the euclidean Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac equations with p-1 magnetic vortices in one surface and the same number of electric vortices in the other. The monopole condensate plays the role of cosmological constant. The virtual dimension of the moduli space is zero, showing that for given p_1 and p_2, the solutions are unique.
We consider the N=1* supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory and demonstrate that the Z_2 vortices in this theory acquire orientational zero modes, associated with the rotation of magnetic flux inside SU(2) group, and turn into the non-Abelian strings, when the masses of all chiral fields become equal. These non-Abelian strings are not BPS-saturated. We study the effective theory on the string world sheet and show that it is given by two-dimensional non-supersymmetric O(3) sigma model. The confined 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole is seen as a junction of the Z_2-string and anti-string, and as a kink in t…
It is demonstrated that there are smooth Yang-Mills potentials which correspond to monopoles and vortices of one-half winding number. They are the generic configurations, in contrast to the integral winding number configurations like the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole.
We consider, from several complementary perspectives, the physics of confinement and deconfinement in the 2+1 dimensional Georgi-Glashow model. Polyakov's monopole plasma and 't Hooft's vortex condensation are discussed first. We then discuss the physics of confining strings at zero temperature. We review the Hamiltonian variational approach and show how the linear confining potential arises in this framework. The second part of this review is devoted to study of the deconfining phase transition. We show that the mechanism of the transition is the restoration of 't Hooft's magnetic symmetry in…
We study the partition functions of BPS vortices and magnetic monopole operators, in gauge theories describing $N$ M2-branes. In particular, we explore two closely related methods to study the Cardy limit of the index on $S^2\times\mathbb{R}$. The first method uses the factorization of this index to vortex partition functions, while the second one uses a continuum approximation for the monopole charge sums. Monopole condensation confines most of the $N^2$ degrees of freedom except $N^{\frac{3}{2}}$ of them, even in the high temperature deconfined phase. The resulting large $N$ free energy stat…
The dynamical (super)symmetries for various monopole systems are reviewed. For a Dirac monopole, no smooth Runge-Lenz vector can exist; there is, however, a spectrum-generating conformal $o(2,1)$ dynamical symmetry that extends into $osp(1/1)$ or $osp(1/2)$ for spin 1/2 particles. Self-dual 't Hooft-Polyakov-type monopoles admit an $su(2/2)$ dynamical supersymmetry algebra, which allows us to reduce the fluctuation equation to the spin zero case. For large $r$ the system reduces to a Dirac monopole plus an suitable inverse-square potential considered before by McIntosh and Cisneros, and by Zwa…
We construct a smooth gauge for the adjoint field which is free of ambiguities on the lattice. In this Laplacian Center Gauge, center vortices and monopoles appear together as local gauge defects. A numerical study of center vortices in SU(2) and SU(3) supports equality of the $Z_N$ and SU(N) string tensions in the continuum limit, and only then.
In this note we show that for the group G = U(N) the space of Hecke modifications of a rank N vector bundle over a Riemann surface C coincides with the moduli space of solutions of certain non-abelian vortex equations over C . Through the recent work of Kapustin and Witten this then leads to an isomorphism between the moduli space of vortices and the moduli space of singular monopoles on the product of C with a closed interval I .
We give a gauge-invariant definition of the vortex surface in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory without using the gauge fixing procedure. In this construction, gauge-invariant magnetic monopoles with fractional magnetic charges emerge in the boundary of the non-oriented vortex surface such that the asymptotic string tension reproduces the correct $N$-ality dependence. We show that gauge-invariant magnetic monopoles and vortices are simultaneously responsible for quark confinement in four dimensional spacetime based on the Wilson criterion. These results are extracted from a non-Abelian Stokes theorem de…
We propose to use the different kinds of vacua of the gauge theories coupled to matter as a laboratory to test confinement ideas of pure Yang-Mills theories. In particular, the very poor overlap of the Wilson loop with the broken string states supports the 't Hooft and Mandelstam confinement criteria. However in the Z(2) gauge-Higgs model we use as a guide we find that the condensation of monopoles and center vortices is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for confinement.
The relation of confinement scenarios based on topological configurations and the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario is examined. To this end the eigenspectrum of the central operator in the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario, the Faddeev-Popov operator, is studied in topological field configurations. It is found that instantons, monopoles, and vortices contribute to the spectrum in a qualitatively similar way. Especially, all give rise to additional zero-modes and thus can contribute to the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism. Hence a close relation between these confinement scenarios likely exists.
Grand unified theories of fundamental forces predict that magnetic monopoles are inevitable in the Universe because the second homotopy group of the order parameter manifold is $\mathbb{Z}$. We point out that monopoles can annihilate in pairs due to an influence of Alice strings. As a consequence, a monopole charge is charactarized by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ rather than $\mathbb{Z}$ if the Universe can accommodate Alice strings, which is the case of certain grand unified theories.
It is shown that SU(N) gauge theory coupled to adjoint Higgs can be explicitly re-written in terms of SU(N) gauge invariant dynamical variables with local physical interactions. The resultant theory has a novel compact abelian $U(1)^{(N - 1)}$ gauge invariance. The above abelian gauge invariance is related to the adjoint Higgs field and not to the gauge group SU(N). In this abelianized version the magnetic monopoles carrying the magnetic charges of $(N-1)$ types have a natural origin and therefore appear explicitly in the partition function as Dirac monopoles along with their strings. The gaug…
Ensembles of magnetic defects represent quantum variables that have been detected and extensively explored in lattice ${\rm SU}(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theory. They successfully explain many properties of confinement and are strongly believed to capture the (infrared) path-integral measure. In this work, we initially motivate the presence of magnetic non-Abelian degrees of freedom in these ensembles. Next, we consider a simple Gaussian model to account for fluctuations. In this case, both center vortices and monopoles become relevant degrees in Wilson loop averages. These physical inputs are then …
SU(2) gluodynamics is investigated numerically and analytically in the (Indirect) Maximal Center gauge at finite temperature. The center vortices are shown to be condensed in the confinement phase and dilute in the deconfinement phase. A new physical object, center monopole, is constructed. We show that the center monopole condensate is the order parameter of deconfinement phase transition. The linking of the vortex worldsheets and quark trajectories is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm interaction in an effective Abelian Higgs theory. We conclude that the confinement in the Maximal Center gau…
Condensation of the Abelian monopoles and the center vortices leads to confinement of color in low temperature phase of Yang-Mills theory. We stress that these topological magnetic degrees of freedom are also very important in the deconfinement regime: at the point of the deconfinement phase transition both the monopoles and the vortices are released into the thermal vacuum contributing, in particular, to the equation of state and, definitely, to transport properties of the hot gluonic medium. Thus, we argue that a novel, magnetic component plays a crucial role. On the other hand, it was demon…
There has been some recent interest in the study of non-abelian BPS monopoles in the limit of large magnetic charge. Most investigations have used a magnetic bag approximation, in which spherical symmetry is assumed within an abelian description. In particular, this approach has been used to suggest the existence of two types of magnetic bag, with differing distributions of the zeros of the Higgs field, together with multi-layer structures, containing several magnetic bags. This paper is concerned with the analogous situation of abelian BPS vortices in the hyperbolic plane, in the limit of lar…
We propose a field theoretical model that exhibits spontaneous breaking of the rotational symmetry. The model has a two-dimensional sphere as extra dimensions of the space-time and consists of a complex scalar field and a background gauge field. The Dirac monopole, which is invariant under the rotations of the sphere, is taken as the background field. We show that when the radius of the sphere is larger than a certain critical radius, the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field develops vortices, which pin down the rotational symmetry to lower symmetries. We evaluate the critical radius a…
We argue that in the infrared regime of continuum Yang-Mills theory, the possibility of a mass gap in the charged sector is closely associated with the center vortex sector. The analysis of the possible consequences of the ensembles of defects is done by showing that the description of center vortices and monopoles is naturally unified by means of a careful treatment of Cho decomposition. If on the one hand confinement is usually associated with monopole condensation in a compact abelian model, in this scenario, the previous decoupling of the off-diagonal degrees of freedom, for the abelian mo…
In this work, we review a recently proposed measure to compute center-element averages in a mixed ensemble of center vortices and chains with non-Abelian d.o.f. and monopole fusion. When center vortices percolate and monopoles condense, the average is captured by a saddle point and collective modes in a YMH model. In this manner, the Lüscher term, confining flux tubes with N-ality and confined gluons were accommodated in an ensemble picture.
Using the lattice gauge field theory, we study the relation among the local chiral condensate, monopoles, and color magnetic fields in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). First, we investigate idealized Abelian gauge systems of 1) a static monopole-antimonopole pair and 2) a magnetic flux without monopoles, on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In these systems, we calculate the local chiral condensate on quasi-massless fermions coupled to the Abelian gauge field, and find that the chiral condensate is localized in the vicinity of the magnetic field. Second, using SU(3) lattice QCD Monte Carlo ca…
In a gauge theory with no Higgs fields the mechanism for confinement is by center vortices, but in theories with adjoint Higgs fields and generic symmetry breaking, such as the Georgi-Glashow model, Polyakov showed that in d=3 confinement arises via a condensate of 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles. We study the connection in d=3 between pure-gauge theory and the theory with adjoint Higgs by varying the Higgs VEV v. As one lowers v from the Polyakov semi- classical regime v>>g (g is the gauge coupling) toward zero, where the unbroken theory lies, one encounters effects associated with the unbroken t…
We discuss the role of magnetic degrees of freedom in Yang-Mills plasma at temperatures above and of order of the critical temperature Tc. While at zero temperature the magnetic degrees of freedom are condensed and electric degrees of freedom are confined, at the point of the phase transition both magnetic and electric degrees of freedom are released into the thermal vacuum. This phenomenon might explain the observed unusual properties of the plasma.
Abelian and center gauges are considered in continuum Yang-Mills theory in order to detect the magnetic monopole and center vortex content of gauge field configurations. Specifically we examine the Laplacian Abelian and center gauges, which are free of Gribov copies, as well as the center gauge analog of the (Abelian) Polyakov gauge. In particular, we study meron, instanton and instanton-anti-instanton field configurations in these gauges and determine their monopole and vortex content. While a single instanton does not give rise to a center vortex, we find center vortices for merons. Furtherm…
A variation on the abelian Higgs model, with global SU(2) x local U(1) symmetry broken to global U(1) was recently shown by Vachaspati and Achucarro to admit stable, finite energy cosmic string solutions even though the manifold of minima of the potential energy does not have non-contractible loops. Here the most general solutions, both in the single and multi-vortex cases, are described in the Bogomol'nyi limit. The gravitational field of the vortices considered as cosmic strings is obtained and monopole-like solutions surrounded by an event horizon are found.
The metamorphosis of semi-classical mechanisms of confinement: From monopoles on ${\mathbb R}^3 \times S^1$ to center-vortices on ${\mathbb R}^2 \times T^2$
We construct effective actions for non-Abelian 1/4 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) monopole-vortex complexes in 4d N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups U(N), U(1) \times SO(2n) and U(1) \times USp(2n). In the color-flavor locked vacuum with degenerate hypermultiplet masses, a subgroup of the color-flavor diagonal symmetry remains unbroken and gives internal orientational moduli to vortices which confine monopoles in the Higgs phase. In this paper we discuss the effective action which describes the interactions between monopoles and the orientational moduli of non-Abelian …
In three-dimensional gauge theories, monopole operators create and destroy vortices. We explore this idea in the context of 3d N=4 gauge theories in the presence of an Omega-background. In this case, monopole operators generate a non-commutative algebra that quantizes the Coulomb-branch chiral ring. The monopole operators act naturally on a Hilbert space, which is realized concretely as the equivariant cohomology of a moduli space of vortices. The action furnishes the space with the structure of a Verma module for the Coulomb-branch algebra. This leads to a new mathematical definition of the C…
We point out that there is a natural explanation, in terms of the center vortex confinement mechanism, for the expected Casimir/Sine Law scaling of k-string tensions in the large N limit. The crucial ingredient is the existence of Z(N) center monopoles, which go over to U(1) monopoles in this limit. Vortex densities leading to Casimir/Sine Law scaling at large-N are constructed; these densities have no obvious pathologies and in particular do not grow with N. We also note that center vortices are stable classical solutions of the Wilson action, for all SU(N) gauge theories with N>4, and extend…
