We present a generalized Schmidt decomposition for a pure system with any number of two-level subsystems. The basis is symmetric under the permutation of the parties and is derived from the product state defining the injective tensor norm of the state. The largest coefficient quantifies the quantum correlation of the state. Other coefficients have a lot of information such as the unentangled particles as well as the particles whose reduced states are completely mixed. The decomposition clearly distinguishes the states entangled in inequivalent ways and have an information on the applicability to the teleportation and superdense coding when the given quantum state is used as a quantum channel.
In this letter we discuss a new entanglement measure. It is based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of operators. We give an explicit formula for calculating the entanglement of a large set of states on C^2 \times C^2. Furthermore we find some relations between the entanglement of relative entropy and the Hilbert-Schmidt entanglement. A rigorous definition of partial transposition is given in the appendix.
In this letter, we show that the measure of entanglement using the generalized Bell inequality and the distance between states coincide when we use the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. Our conclusions apply to the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with interaction between the first neighbors.
Hilbert - Schmidt and trace norm geometric quantum discord are compared with regard to their behavior during local time evolution. We consider the system of independent two - level atoms with time evolution given by the dissipative process of spontaneous emission. It is explicitly shown that the Hilbert - Schmidt norm discord has nonphysical properties with respect to such local evolution and cannot serve as a reasonable measure of quantum correlations and the better choice is to use trace norm discord as such a measure.
In the standard geometric approach to a measure of entanglement of a pure state, $\sin^2θ$ is used, where $θ$ is the angle between the state to the closest separable state of products of normalized qubit states. We consider here a generalization of this notion to separable states consisting of products of unnormalized states of different dimension. In so doing, the entanglement measure $\sin^2θ$ is found to have an interpretation as the distance between the state to the closest separable state. We also find the components of the closest separable state and its norm have an interpretation in te…
We consider the Schmidt decomposition of a bipartite density operator induced by the Hilbert-Schmidt scalar product, and we study the relation between the Schmidt coefficients and entanglement. First, we define the Schmidt equivalence classes of bipartite states. Each class consists of all the density operators (in a given bipartite Hilbert space) sharing the same set of Schmidt coefficients. Next, we review the role played by the Schmidt coefficients with respect to the separability criterion known as the `realignment' or `computable cross norm' criterion; in particular, we highlight the fact…
A quantum state's entanglement across a bipartite cut can be quantified with entanglement entropy or, more generally, Schmidt norms. Using only Schmidt decompositions, we present a simple iterative algorithm to maximize Schmidt norms. Depending on the choice of norm, the optimizing states maximize or minimize entanglement, possibly across several bipartite cuts at the same time and possibly only among states in a specified subspace. Recognizing that convergence but not success is certain, we use the algorithm to explore topics ranging from fermionic reduced density matrices and varieties of pu…
We treat 3-qubits states with maximally disordered subsystems, by using Hilbert-Schmidt decompositions.By using unfolding methods, the tensors are converted into matrices and by applying singular values decompositions to these matrices the number 27 of the Hilbert Schmidt parameters, is reduced to 9 and under the condition that the sum of absolute values of these parameters is not larger than 1, we conclude that the density matrix is fully separable . In another method we divide the 27 Hilbert Schmidt parameters into 9 triads where for each triad we calculate the Frobenius norm of 3 Hilbert-Sc…
We show that the Hilbert-Schmidt distance, unlike the trace distance, between quantum states is generally not monotonic for open quantum systems subject to Lindblad semigroup dynamics. Sufficient conditions for contractivity of the Hilbert-Schmidt norm in terms of the dissipation generators are given. Although these conditions are not necessary, simulations suggest that non-contractivity is the typical case, i.e., that systems for which the Hilbert-Schmidt distance between quantum states is monotonically decreasing form only a small set of all possible dissipative systems for N>2, in contrast …
In the standard geometric approach, the entanglement of a pure state is $\sin^2θ$, where $θ$ is the angle between the entangled state and the closest separable state of products of normalised qubit states. We consider here a generalisation of this notion by considering separable states that consist of products of unnormalised states of different dimension. The distance between the target entangled state and the closest unnormalised product state can be interpreted as a measure of the entanglement of the target state. The components of the closest product state and its norm have an interpretati…
Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) decompositions and Frobenius norms are used to analyze biseparability of 3-qubit systems, with particular emphasis on density matrices with maximally disordered subsystems (MDS) and on the W state mixed with white noise. The biseparable form of a MDS density matrix is obtained by using the Bell states of a 2-qubit subsystem, multiplied by density matrices of the third qubit, which include the relevant HS parameters. Using our methods a sufficient condition and explicit biseparability of the W state mixed with white noise are given. They are compared with the sufficient con…
We consider four norms on tensor product spaces that have appeared in quantum information theory and demonstrate duality relationships between them. We show that the product numerical radius is dual to the robustness of entanglement, and we similarly show that the S(k)-norm is dual to the projective tensor norm. We show that, analogous to how the product numerical radius and the S(k)-norm characterize k-block positivity of operators, there is a natural version of the projective tensor norm that characterizes Schmidt number. In this way we obtain an elementary new proof of the cross norm criter…
We prove a new version of the Holevo bound employing the Hilbert-Schmidt norm instead of the Kullback-Leibler divergence. Suppose Alice is sending classical information to Bob using a quantum channel, while Bob is performing some projective measurement. We bound the classical mutual information in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt norm by its quantum Hilbert-Schmidt counterpart. This constitutes a Holevo-type upper bound on the classical information transmission rate via a quantum channel. The resulting inequality is rather natural and intuitive relating classical and quantum expressions using the …
We study the Hilbert-Schmidt measure on the manifold of mixed Gaussian states in multi mode continuous variable quantum systems. An analytical expression for the Hilbert-Schmidt volume element is derived. Its corresponding probability measure can be used to study typical properties of Gaussian states. It turns out that although the manifold of Gaussian states is unbounded, an ensemble of Gaussian states distributed according to this measure still has a normalizable distribution of symplectic eigenvalues, from which unitarily invariant properties can be obtained. By contrast, we find that for a…
We consider a bipartite mixed state of the form, $ρ=\sum_{α, β=1}^{l}a_{αβ} | ψ_α> < ψ_ β}| $, where $| ψ_α>$ are normalized bipartite state vectors, and matrix $(a_{αβ})$ is positive semidefinite. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the state $ρ$ taking the form of maximally correlated states by a local unitary transformation. More precisely, we give a criterion for simultaneous Schmidt decomposability of $| ψ_α>$ for $α=1,2,..., l$. Using this criterion, we can judge completely whether or not the state $ρ$ is equivalent to the maximally correlated state, in which the distilla…
Many quantum algorithms that claim speed-up over their classical counterparts only generate quantum states as solutions instead of their final classical description. The additional step to decode quantum states into classical vectors normally will destroy the quantum advantage in most scenarios because all existing tomographic methods require runtime that is polynomial with respect to the state dimension. In this work, we present an efficient read-out protocol that yields the classical vector form of the generated state, so it will achieve the end-to-end advantage for those quantum algorithms.…
The trace distance between two quantum states, $ρ$ and $σ$, is an operationally meaningful quantity in quantum information theory. However, in general it is difficult to compute, involving the diagonalization of $ρ- σ$. In contrast, the Hilbert-Schmidt distance can be computed without diagonalization, although it is less operationally significant. Here, we relate the trace distance and the Hilbert-Schmidt distance with a bound that is particularly strong when either $ρ$ or $σ$ is low rank. Our bound is stronger than the bound one could obtain via the norm equivalence of the Frobenius and trace…
Using Bloch's parametrization for qudits ($d$-level quantum systems), we write the Hilbert-Schmidt distance (HSD) between two generic $n$-qudit states as an Euclidean distance between two vectors of observables mean values in $\mathbb{R}^{Π_{s=1}^{n}d_{s}^{2}-1}$, where $d_{s}$ is the dimension for qudit $s$. Then, applying the generalized Gell Mann's matrices to generate $SU(d_{s})$, we use that result to obtain the Hilbert-Schmidt quantum coherence (HSC) of $n$-qudit systems. As examples, we consider in details one-qubit, one-qutrit, two-qubit, and two copies of one-qubit states. In this las…
We investigate the differential geometry of bipartite quantum states. In particular the manifold structures of pure bipartite states are studied in detail. The manifolds with respect to all normalized pure states of arbitrarily given Schmidt ranks or Schmidt coefficients are explicitly presented. The dimensions of the related manifolds are calculated.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of large tensor powers of normed spaces and of operators between them. We define the tensor radius of a finite-dimensional normed space $X$ as the limit of the sequence $A_k^{1/k}$, where $A_k$ is the equivalence constant between the projective and injective norms on $X^{\otimes k}$. We show that Euclidean spaces are characterized by the property that their tensor radius equals their dimension. Moreover, we compute the tensor radius for spaces with enough symmetries, such as the spaces $\ell_p^n$. We also define the tensor radius of an operator $T$ as the limi…
We define and study XOR games in the framework of general probabilistic theories, which encompasses all physical models whose predictive power obeys minimal requirements. The bias of an XOR game under local or global strategies is shown to be given by a certain injective or projective tensor norm, respectively. The intrinsic (i.e.\ model-independent) advantage of global over local strategies is thus connected to a universal function $r(n,m)$ called 'projective-injective ratio'. This is defined as the minimal constant $ρ$ such that $\|\cdot\|_{X\otimes_πY}\leqρ\,\|\cdot\|_{X\otimes_\varepsilon …
We show that only those composite quantum systems possessing nonvanishing quantum correlations have the property that any nontrivial local unitary evolution changes their global state. We derive the exact relation between the global state change induced by local unitary evolutions and the amount of quantum correlations. We prove that the minimal change coincides with the geometric measure of discord (defined via the Hilbert- Schmidt norm), thus providing the latter with an operational interpretation in terms of the capability of a local unitary dynamics to modify a global state. We establish t…
