We define a volume limited sample of over 14,000 early-type galaxies (ETGs) selected from data release six of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The density of environment of each galaxy is robustly measured. By comparing narrow band spectral line indices with recent models of simple stellar populations (SSPs) we investigate trends in the star formation history as a function of galaxy mass (velocity dispersion), density of environment and galactic radius. We find that age, metallicity and alpha-enhancement all increase with galaxy mass and that field ETGs are younger than their cluster counterparts by ~2 Gyr. We find negative radial metallicity gradients for all masses and environments, and positive radial age gradients for ETGs with velocity dispersion over 180 km/s. Our results are qualitatively consistent with a relatively simple picture for ETG evolution in which the low-mass halos accreted by a proto-ETG contained not only gas but also a stellar population. This fossil population is preferentially found at large radii in massive ETGs because the stellar accretions were dissipationless. We estimate that the typical, massive ETG should have been assembled at z < 3.5. The process is similar in the cluster and the field but occurred earlier in dense environments.
We use the optical and near-infrared galaxy samples from the Munich Near-Infrared Cluster Survey (MUNICS), the FORS Deep Field (FDF) and GOODS-S to probe the stellar mass assembly history of field galaxies out to z ~ 5. Combining information on the galaxies' stellar mass with their star-formation rate and the age of the stellar population, we can draw important conclusions on the assembly of the most massive galaxies in the universe: These objects contain the oldest stellar populations at all redshifts probed. Furthermore, we show that with increasing redshift the contribution of star-formatio…
I discuss current observational constraints on the star-formation and stellar-assembly histories of galaxies at high redshifts. The data on massive galaxies at z<1 implies that their stellar populations formed at z>2, and that their morphological configuration was in place soon thereafter. Spitzer Space Telescope 24 micron observations indicate that a substantial fraction of massive galaxies at z ~ 1.5-3 have high IR luminosities, suggesting they are rapidly forming stars, accreting material onto supermassive black holes, or both. I compare how observations of these IR-active phases in the his…
We review the most recent observational results on the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies and their mass assembly by focusing on: the existence, properties and role of distant old, massive, passive systems to z~2, the stellar mass function evolution, the ``downsizing'' scenario, and the high-z precursors of massive early-type galaxies.
We combine optical (HST) and UV (GALEX) imaging of two intermediate redshift galaxy clusters with spectroscopy of member galaxies, to study the relation between the formation history of cluster galaxies and the assembly history of the cluster structure itself. We identify key differences in the large-scale structure and intracluster medium properties of each cluster. In order to assess the importance of cluster substructure and the ICM in the evolution of cluster galaxies, we examine several key indicators of the recent star-formation and assembly history of cluster galaxies. We find that gala…
(abridged) We study the mass assembly history (MAH) of dark matter haloes. We compare MAHs obtained using (i) merger trees constructed with the extended Press-Schechter (EPS) formalism, (ii) numerical simulations, and (iii) the Lagrangian perturbation code PINOCCHIO. We show that the PINOCCHIO MAHs are in excellent agreement with those obtained using numerical simulations. Using a suite of 55 PINOCCHIO simulations, with 256^3 particles each, we study the MAHs of 12,924 cold dark matter haloes in a \LambdaCDM concordance cosmology. We show that haloes less massive than the characteristic non-li…
We discuss the mass assembly history both on cluster and galaxy scales and their impact on galaxy evolution. On cluster scale, we introduce our on-going PISCES project on Subaru, which plans to target ~15 clusters at 0.4<z<1.3 using the unique wide-field (30') optical camera Suprime-Cam and the spectrograph both in optical (FOCAS, 6') and near-infrared (FMOS, 30'). The main objectives of this project are twofold: (1) Mapping out the large scale structures in and around the clusters on 10-14 Mpc scale to study the hierarchical growth of clusters through assembly of surrounding groups. (2) Inves…
We measure the relative evolution of the number of bright and faint (as faint as 0.05 L*) red galaxies in a sample of 28 clusters, of which 16 are at 0.50<= z<=1.27, all observed through a pair of filters bracketing the 4000 Angstrom break rest-frame. The abundance of red galaxies, relative to bright ones, is constant over all the studied redshift range, 0<z<1.3, and rules out a differential evolution between bright and faint red galaxies as large as claimed in some past works. Faint red galaxies are largely assembled and in place at z=1.3 and their deficit does not depend on cluster mass, par…
We describe the results and the current status of our program to search for intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in the Virgo and the Coma clusters of galaxies. For the Virgo cluster, ICPNe candidates were detected with narrow band imaging combined with broad band imaging. The use of two narrow band filters for H$α$ and [O III] lines tuned for the cluster redshift enabled us to detect secure ICPNe candidates. Kinematics of the detected ICPNe confirm that the Virgo cluster is in a highly unrelaxed state. In order to detect ICPNe in the Coma cluster, which is more than five times more distant …
We examine the properties of a morphologically-selected sample of 0.4<z<1.0 spheroidal galaxies in the GOODS fields in order to ascertain whether their increase in abundance with time arises primarily from mergers. To address this question we determine scaling relations between the dynamical mass determined from stellar velocity dispersions, and the stellar mass determined from optical and infrared photometry. We exploit these relations across the larger sample for which we have stellar masses in order to construct the first statistically robust estimate of the evolving dynamical mass function…
We study a unique proto-cluster of galaxies, the supergroup SG1120-1202. We quantify the degree to which morphological transformation of cluster galaxies occurs prior to cluster assembly in order to explain the observed early-type fractions in galaxy clusters at z=0. SG1120-1202 at z~0.37 is comprised of four gravitationally bound groups that are expected to coalesce into a single cluster by z=0. Using HST ACS observations, we compare the morphological fractions of the supergroup galaxies to those found in a range of environments. We find that the morphological fractions of early-type galaxies…
Axisymmetric, orbit-based dynamical models are used to derive dark matter scaling relations for Coma early-type galaxies. From faint to bright galaxies halo core-radii and asymptotic circular velocities increase. Compared to spirals of the same brightness, the majority of Coma early-types -- those with old stellar populations -- have similar halo core-radii but more than 2 times larger asymptotic halo velocities. The average dark matter density inside 2 reff decreases with increasing luminosity and is 6.8 times larger than in disk galaxies of the same B-band luminosity. Compared at the same st…
We assess models for the assembly of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the center of galaxies that trace their hierarchical build-up far up in the dark halo `merger tree'. We assume that the first `seed' black holes (BHs) formed in (mini)halos collapsing at z=20 from high-sigma density fluctuations. As these pregalactic holes become incorporated through a series of mergers into larger and larger halos, they sink to the center owing to dynamical friction, accrete a fraction of the gas in the merger remnant to become supermassive, form a binary system, and eventually coalesce. The merger histo…
We show by means of a high-resolution N-body simulation how the mass assembly histories of galaxy-size cold dark matter (CDM) halos depend on environment. Halos in high density environments form earlier and a higher fraction of their mass is assembled in major mergers, compared to low density environments. The distribution of the present-day specific mass aggregation rate is strongly dependent on environment. While in low density environments only ~20% of the halos are not accreting mass at the present epoch, this fraction rises to ~80% at high densities. At z=1 the median of the specific aggr…
Pan-chromatic galaxy surveys are providing tightening constraints on the global mass assembly history, and high-resolution imaging of large fields is telling us when and where stars were formed. How well are state-of-the-art hierarchical galaxy formation models currently doing at reproducing these observations? I present results here that suggest that hierarchical models are doing quite well at reproducing the global star formation and stellar mass assembly history obtained from galaxies selected in the optical and Near IR. However, the same models fail to reproduce two very important populati…
We present deep, panoramic multi-color imaging of the distant rich cluster A851 (z=0.41) using Suprime-Cam on Subaru. These images cover a 27' field of view (~11 h_{50}^{-1}Mpc), and by exploiting photometric redshifts, we can isolate galaxies in a narrow redshift slice at the cluster redshift. Using a sample of ~2700 probable cluster members (<M*+4), we trace the network of filaments and subclumps around the cluster core. The depth of our observations, combined with the identification of filamentary structure, gives us an unprecedented opportunity to test the influence of the environment on t…
The history of the discovery of dark matter in the Universe is briefly reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the early work by Zwicky (1933), Smith (1936), Babcock (1939) and Oort (1940).
We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function of galaxies up to z=2.5 as obtained from the VVDS. We estimate the stellar mass from broad-band photometry using 2 different assumptions on the galaxy star formation history and show that the addition of secondary bursts to a continuous star formation history produces systematically higher (up to 40%) stellar masses. At low redshift (z=0.2) we find a substantial population of low-mass galaxies (<10^9 Msun) composed by faint blue galaxies (M_I-M_K=0.3). In general the stellar mass function evolves slowly up to z=0.9 and more sig…
The clustering of dark halos depends not only on their mass but also on their assembly history, a dependence we term `assembly bias'. Using a galaxy formation model grafted onto the Millennium Simulation of the LCDM cosmogony, we study how assembly bias affects galaxy clustering. We compare the original simulation to `shuffled' versions where the galaxy populations are randomly swapped among halos of similar mass, thus isolating the effects of correlations between assembly history and environment at fixed mass. Such correlations are ignored in the halo occupation distribution models often used…
Understanding the formation history of massive galaxies is one of most popular and longstanding problems in astronomy, with observations and theory addressing how and when these systems assembled. Since the most massive galaxies in today's universe, with M_*> 10^11 M_0, are nearly all elliptical with uniform old stellar populations, we must probe higher redshifts to discover their full origins. A recent consensus has developed that nearly all M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies we see today were established by z~1, with at most a factor of two growth in stellar mass and number densities at lower redshift…
We study the relation between the density profiles of dark matter halos and their mass assembly histories, using a statistical sample of halos in a high-resolution N-body simulation of the LCDM cosmology. For each halo at z=0, we identify its merger-history tree, and determine concentration parameters c_vir for all progenitors, thus providing a structural merger tree for each halo. We fit the mass accretion histories by a universal function with one parameter, the formation epoch a_c, defined when the log mass accretion rate dlog M/doga falls below a critical value. We find that late forming g…
We selected a mass-limited sample of 4048 objects from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey in the redshift interval 0.5<z<1.3. We used the amplitude of the 4000 Balmer break (Dn4000) to separate the galaxy population and the EW[OII]3727 line as proxy for the star formation activity. We discuss to what extent stellar mass drives galaxy evolution, showing for the first time the interplay between stellar ages and stellar masses over the past 8Gyr. Low-mass galaxies have small Dn4000 and at increasing stellar mass, the galaxy distribution moves to higher Dn4000 values as observed in the local Universe. As c…
In this paper, we study the variations of group galaxy properties according to the assembly history in SDSS-DR6 selected groups. Using mock SDSS group catalogues, we find two suitable indicators of group formation time: i) the isolation of the group, defined as the distance to the nearest neighbor in terms of its virial radius, and ii) the concentration, measured as the group inner density calculated using the fifth nearest bright galaxy to the group centre. Groups within narrow ranges of mass in the mock catalogue show increasing group age with isolation and concentration. However, in the obs…
We present a comprehensive catalog of high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II telescope for a sample of F850LP<22.43 (AB) field spheroidal (E+S0s; 163) and bulge dominated disk (61) galaxies in the redshift range 0.2<z<1.2. We examine the zero point, tilt and scatter of the Fundamental Plane (FP) as a function of redshift and morphological properties, carefully accounting for luminosity-dependent biases via Montecarlo simulations. The evolution of the overall FP can be represented by a mean change in effective mass-to-light ratio given by <d \log (M/L_…
In this paper we use the ``Millennium Simulation'' to re-examine the mass assembly history of dark matter halos and the age dependence of halo clustering. We use eight different definitions of halo formation times to characterize the different aspects of the assembly history of a dark matter halo. We find that these formation times have different dependence on halo mass. While some formation times characterize well the hierarchical nature of halo formation, in the sense that more massive halos have later formation, the trend is reversed for other definitions of the formation time. In particula…
Clusters of galaxies are believed to be at the intersections of cosmological filaments and to grow by accreting matter from these filaments. Such continuous infall has major consequences not only on clusters but also on the physics of cluster galaxies. Faint galaxies are particularly interesting as they are very sensitive to environmental effects, and may have a different behaviour from that of bright galaxies. The aim of this paper is to sample the Coma cluster building history, based on the analysis of galaxy luminosity functions and red sequences in the Color Magnitude Relation down to fain…
We present deep Keck spectroscopy for a sample of I<22.5 field early-type galaxies selected morphologically in the redshift range 0.56<z<1.02 in the HDF-N. Using velocity dispersions determined from the Keck spectra in conjunction with structural parameters measured from the deep WFPC2 images we study the evolution of the M/L_B ratio and the fundamental plane (FP) with redshift. For the majority of galaxies the trends observed are very similar to those determined earlier for rich clusters. The systematic offset between HDF-N galaxies and cluster galaxies is d(ln M/L_B) = -0.14 +- 0.13, corresp…
Based on a high resolution cosmological n-body simulation, we track the hierarchical growth of black holes in galaxy clusters from z=20 to z=0. We present a census of black holes as function of redshift and will determine their mass assembly history under a variety of assumptions regarding the importance of gas accretion in black hole growth, from early supercritical Eddington accretion to gas-poor hierarchical assembly. Following a galaxy merger, black holes are expected to form, inspiral and merge after strongly radiating energy via gravitational waves. For each binary black hole inspiral an…
We combine deep UBVRIzJK photometry from the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC) with redshifts from the COMBO-17 survey to perform a large-scale study of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) properties of 674 high-redshift (0.5<z<1) early-type galaxies, drawn from the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (E-CDFS). Galaxy morphologies are determined through visual inspection of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken from the GEMS survey. We harness the sensitivity of the UV to young (<1 Gyr old) stars to quantify the recent star formation history of early-type galaxies across a range of lu…
We present estimates of CN and Mg overabundances with respect to Fe for early-type galaxies in 8 clusters over a range of richness and morphology. Spectra were taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR1, and from WHT and CAHA observations. Abundances were derived from absorption lines and single burst population models, by comparing galaxy spectra with appropriately broadened synthetic model spectra. We detect correlations between [Mg/CN] and [CN/Fe] and cluster X-ray luminosity. No correlation is observed for [Mg/Fe]. We also see a clear trend with the richness and morphology of the c…
We present a combined photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the star formation history and space density of a sample of 485 luminous, M_V - 5 log h < -20.5, field early-type galaxies at redshifts 0.3 < z < 0.6. The observed b_Jori colours as a function of redshift, mean absorption line strengths and [OII] 3727 emission properties are used to constrain the star formation history of the galaxies. The mean star formation history of the early-type galaxy sample is consistent with an old (z_f>1), passively evolving luminosity-weighted stellar population. Twenty-one percent of the sample possess…
We investigate the origin of halo assembly bias, the dependence of halo clustering on assembly history. We relate halo assembly to peak properties measured in the Lagrangian space of the initial linear Gaussian random density field, and show how these same Lagrangian properties determine large-scale bias. We focus on the two regimes where assembly bias has been observed to be significant: at masses very large and very small compared to the nonlinear mass scale. At high masses, we show that assembly bias is expected from the statistics of the peaks of Gaussian random fluctuations, and we show t…
We present a new analysis of the rest-frame B-band COMBO-17 and DEEP2 luminosity functions (LFs) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) as a function of luminosity and mass. Our aim is to place new stringent constraints on the evolution of ETGs since z~1. We correct the LF($z$) data for the luminosity dimming assuming pure luminosity evolution. However, instead of relying on stellar population synthesis model--dependent assumptions, we adopt the empirical luminosity dimming rate derived from the evolution of the Fundamental Plane of field and cluster massive ETGs.Our results show that the amount of evo…
The intergalactic medium - the cosmic gas that fills the great spaces between the galaxies - is affected by processes ranging from quantum fluctuations in the very early universe to radiative emission from newly-formed stars. This gives the intergalactic medium a dual role as a powerful probe both of fundamental physics and of astrophysics. The heading of fundamental physics includes conditions in the very early universe and basic cosmological parameters. The astrophysics refers to chapters of the long cosmic history of stars and galaxies that are being revealed through the effects of stellar …
