We describe the results and the current status of our program to search for intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in the Virgo and the Coma clusters of galaxies. For the Virgo cluster, ICPNe candidates were detected with narrow band imaging combined with broad band imaging. The use of two narrow band filters for H$α$ and [O III] lines tuned for the cluster redshift enabled us to detect secure ICPNe candidates. Kinematics of the detected ICPNe confirm that the Virgo cluster is in a highly unrelaxed state. In order to detect ICPNe in the Coma cluster, which is more than five times more distant than the Virgo cluster, we devised a multi-slit imaging spectroscopy technique and successfully detected 35 secure ICPNe candidates for the first time in this cluster. We have found a hint that the Coma cluster is currently in the midst of a subcluster merger.
We briefly describe the properties of the confirmed spectroscopic sample of intracluster planetary nebulae recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. We find 23 bonafide intracluster planetary nebulae and 8 high redshift (z ~ 3.1) Lyalpha emitters identified by their broad asymmetric emission line.
Intracluster planetary nebulae are a useful tracer of the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. We analyze our catalog of 318 intracluster planetary nebulae candidates found in 0.89 square degrees of the Virgo cluster. We give additional evidence for the great depth of the Virgo cluster's intracluster stellar population, which implies that the bulk of the intracluster stars come from late-type galaxies and dwarfs. We also provide evidence that the intracluster stars are clustered on the sky on arcminute scales, in agreement with tidal-stripping scenarios of intracluster star production. A…
I review the progress in research on intracluster planetary nebulae over the last five years. Hundreds more intracluster planetary nebulae have been detected in the nearby Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters, searches of several galaxy groups have been made, and intracluster planetary candidates have been detected in the distant Coma cluster. The first theoretical studies of intracluster planetaries have also been completed, studying their utility as tracers of the intracluster light as a whole, and also as individual objects. From the results to date, it appears that intracluster planetaries are…
We surveyed a 50 sq arcmin region in the Virgo cluster core to search for intergalactic planetary nebulae, and found 11 candidates in the surveyed area. The measured fluxes of these unresolved sources are consistent with these objects being planetary nebulae from an intracluster population of stars. We compute the cumulative luminosity function of these 11 planetary nebula candidates. If we assume that they belong to the Virgo cluster, their cumulative luminosity function is in good agreement with planetary nebula luminosity function simulations. This comparison allows us to estimate the surfa…
We review the progress of research on intracluster planetary nebulae (IPN). In the past five years, hundreds of IPN candidates have been detected in the Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters and searches are also underway in poorer galaxy groups. From the observations to date, and applying the known properties of extragalactic planetary nebulae, the intracluster light in Virgo and Fornax: 1) is significant, at least 20% of the total cluster stellar luminosity, 2) is elongated in Virgo along our line of sight, and 3) may derive from lower-luminosity galaxies, consistent with some models of intraclus…
I review the progress in research on Intracluster Planetary Nebulae (IPN). Hundreds of IPN candidates have now been found in the Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters, and searches of two nearby galaxy groups have made. From the results thus far, approximately 10 - 20% of all stars in Virgo and Fornax are in an intracluster component, but there are few such stars in galaxy groups. From the spatial distribution of IPN, it appears that the intracluster stars are clustered, in agreement with tidal-stripping scenarios. In Virgo, the IPN have a large line-of-sight depth, which implies that the bulk of i…
We have identified 38 candidates of intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in a $34'\times27'$ field in the core of the Virgo cluster based on the Suprime-Cam imaging through two narrow-band filters centered at the redshifted wavelengths of the [OIII]$λ=5007Å$ and the Halpha λ=6563Ålines. Broad-band images in V and R bands are used to check for any emissions in the adjacent continuum. We describe the method briefly and present the list of intracluster planetary nebulae candidates, together with their finding charts. The ICPN candidates show a highly inhomogeneous distribution, which may sugges…
We present the results from multiple surveys for intracluster planetary nebulae (IPNe) in nearby galaxy clusters and groups. We find that in the case of clusters, our observations imply: 1) the amount of intracluster starlight is significant, up to 20% of the total starlight, 2) the Virgo Cluster is elongated along our line of sight, and 3) the intracluster light is clustered on the sky, implying ongoing tidal stripping. In contrast, searches for IPNe in groups have found little or no intra-group population, implying there may be something in the cluster environment that significantly enhances…
We report the initial results of a survey for intracluster planetary nebulae in the Virgo Cluster. In two 16' x 16' fields, we identify 69 and 16 intracluster planetary nebula candidates, respectively. In a third 16' x 16' field near the central elliptical galaxy M87, we detect 75 planetary nebula candidates, of which a substantial fraction are intracluster in nature. By examining the number of the planetaries detected in each field and the shape of the planetary nebula luminosity function, we show that 1) the intracluster starlight of Virgo is distributed non-uniformly, and varies between sub…
I will review the latest results for the presence of diffuse light in the nearby universe and at intermediate redshift, and then discuss the latest results from hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of cluster formation on the expected properties of diffuse light in clusters. I shall present how intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) can be used as excellent tracers of the diffuse stellar population in nearby clusters, and how their number density profile and radial velocity distribution can provide an observational test for models of cluster formation. The preliminary comparison of availabl…
The Coma cluster is the richest and most compact of the nearby clusters, yet there is growing evidence that its formation is still on-going. A sensitive probe of this evolution is the dynamics of intracluster stars, which are unbound from galaxies while the cluster forms, according to cosmological simulations. With a new multi-slit imaging spectroscopy technique pioneered at the 8.2 m Subaru telescope and FOCAS, we can now detect and measure the line-of-sight velocities of the intracluster planetary nebulae which are associated with the diffuse stellar population of stars, at 100 Mpc distance.…
[OIII] lambda 5007AA emission lines of 16 intracluster planetary nebulae candidates in the Coma cluster were detected with a Multi-Slit Imaging Spectroscopy (MSIS) technique using FOCAS on the Subaru telescope. The identification of these faint emission sources as PNe is supported by (i) their point-like flux distribution in both space and wavelength, with tight limits on the continuum flux; (ii) the identification of the second [OIII] lambda 4959 line in the only object at high enough velocity that this line too falls into the filter bandpass; (iii) emission line fluxes consistent with PNe at…
Radial velocities of 40 intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in the Virgo cluster were obtained with the new multi-fiber FLAMES spectrograph on UT2 at VLT. For the first time, the lambda 4959 AA line of the [OIII] doublet is seen in a large fraction (50%) of ICPNe spectra, and a large fraction of the photometric candidates with m(5007) <\= 27.2 is spectroscopically confirmed. ICPNe with the velocity dispersion of the Virgo cluster are found in our CORE field 1 deg from M87. These may have originated from tidal mass loss of smaller galaxies in the M87 subcluster halo. In a field 0.25 deg from…
We have observed emission line objects located in a 0.26 deg^2 field in the M96 (Leo) group, coincident with the intergalactic HI cloud. The emission line objects were selected using the same procedure as used for the search for intracluster planetary nebulae in the Virgo cluster, and their m_5007 luminosity function has a bright cut-off ~1.2 magnitude fainter than for the PNLF associated with the elliptical galaxies in the M96 group. Therefore the vast majority of these emission line objects are compatible with not being intragroup planetary nebulae at the Leo group distance of 10 Mpc. Spectro…
We have imaged an empty area of 34'x34' one and a half degree north of the Virgo cluster core to survey for intracluster planetary nebula candidates. We have implemented and tested a fully automatic procedure for the selection of emission line objects in wide-field images, based on the on-off technique from Ciardullo and Jacoby. Freeman et al. have spectroscopically confirmed a sample of intracluster planetary nebulae in one Virgo field. We use the photometric and morphological properties of this sample to test our selection procedure. In our newly surveyed Virgo field, 75 objects were identif…
Planetary nebulae can be useful dynamical probes of elliptical galaxy halos, but progress thus far has been hampered by the small data samples available for study. In order to obtain a large sample of planetary nebulae for dynamical analysis, we have re-observed the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the center of the Virgo Cluster. Surprisingly, we find that the M87 sample is contaminated by a significant fraction of intracluster objects. Follow up observations of three blank fields in the cluster confirm that a significant fraction of Virgo's starlight is intracluster. We discuss the implication…
Planetary nebulae (PNe) can be used to trace intermediate and old stellar populations in galaxies and the intracluster medium out to approximately 20 Mpc. PNe can be easily identified with narrow-band surveys, and their chemical abundances and radial velocities can be measured with multi-slit or multi-fiber spectrographs. We briefly review what has been accomplished to date, and include tables (with references) that summarize the observations of PNe in 42 galaxies and in the intracluster media of the Virgo and Fornax clusters. The surveys for intracluster PNe suggest that between 20% and 50% o…
The Coma cluster is the richest and most compact of the nearby clusters, yet there is growing evidence that its formation is still on-going. With a new multi-slit imaging spectroscopy technique pioneered at the 8.2 m Subaru telescope and FOCAS, we have detected and measured the line-of-sight velocities of 37 intracluster planetary nebulae associated with the diffuse stellar population of stars in the Coma cluster core, at 100 Mpc distance. We detect clear velocity substructures within a 6 arcmin diameter field. A substructure is present at ~5000 km/s, probably from in-fall of a galaxy group, w…
The stellar population stripped from galaxies in clusters evolve under the extreme conditions imposed by the intracluster (IC) medium. Intracluster stars generally suffer very high systemic velocities, and evolve within a rarefied and extremely hot IC medium. We present numerical simulations which aim to explore the evolution and survival of IC Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) envelopes and Planetary Nebula (PN) shells. Our models reflect the evolution of a low-mass star under the observed conditions in the Virgo IC medium. We find that the integrated hydrogen-recombination line emission of a PN …
Cosmological simulations of structure formation predict that galaxies are dramatically modified by galaxy harassment during the assembly of galaxy clusters, losing a substantial fraction of their stellar mass which today must be in the form of intracluster stars. Simulations predict non-uniform spatial and radial velocity distributions for these stars. Intracluster planetary nebulae are the only abundant component of the intracluster light whose kinematics can be measured at this time. Comparing these velocity distributions with simulations will provide a unique opportunity to investigate the …
I shall review the latest results for the presence of diffuse light in nearby clusters, and the evidence of ongoing star formation in an intracluster Virgo field. I shall discuss how intracluster planetary nebulae can be used as excellent tracers of the diffuse stellar population in nearby clusters. Their number density distribution, density profile and radial velocity distribution provide observational constraints to models for cluster formation and evolution. The preliminary comparison of the avaliable ICPN samples with high resolution N-body models of a Virgo-like cluster in a Lambda CDM co…
We report the results of a survey for novae in and between the galaxies of the Fornax cluster. Our survey provides strong evidence that intracluster novae exist and that they provide a useful, independent measure of the intracluster light in Fornax. We discovered six strong nova candidates in six distinct epochs spanning eleven years from 1993 to 2004. The data were taken with the 4m and the 1.5m telescopes at CTIO. The spatial distribution of the nova candidates is consistent with $\sim$16-41% of the total light in the cluster being in the intracluster light, based on the ratio of the number …
We present the initial results from an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for intra-group planetary nebulae in the M 81 group of galaxies. A total of 0.36 square degrees of the survey have been analyzed thus far, and a total of four intra-group candidates have been detected. These data allow us to probe the physics of galaxy interactions in small groups, and give us an upper limit for the density of intracluster starlight. We find that the M 81 group has less than 3% of its stars in an intra-group component; this is much less than the fraction found in richer galaxy clusters.
We use a high resolution collisionless simulation of a Virgo--like cluster in a $Λ$CDM cosmology to determine the velocity and clustering properties of the diffuse stellar component in the intracluster region at the present epoch. The simulated cluster builds up hierarchically and tidal interactions between member galaxies and the cluster potential produce a diffuse stellar component free-flying in the intracluster medium. Here we adopt an empirical scheme to identify tracers of the stellar component in the simulation and hence study its properties. We find that at $z=0$ the intracluster stell…
We have identified intracluster planetary nebulae in a Virgo cluster core field by imaging with the Subaru Suprime-Cam through two narrow band filters centered at the redshifted wavelengths of the [OIII] $λ=5007$ Åand the H$α$ $λ= 6563$ Ålines; broad-band images in V and R were acquired to check for emission in the adjacent continuum. Emission line objects in Virgo are then selected from the two-color diagram ([OIII] -- Halpha) vs. ([OIII] -- (V+R)), which is calibrated using PNe in M84 (Jacoby et al. 1990). Using both [OIII] and Halpha allows us to distinguish bona-fide planetary nebulae from…
Hypervelocity stars have been recently discovered in the outskirts of galaxies, such as the unbound star in the Milky Way halo, or the three anomalously fast intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in the Virgo Cluster. These may have been ejected by close 3-body interactions with a binary supermassive black hole (SMBBH), where a star which passes within the semimajor axis of the SMBBH can receive enough energy to eject it from the system. Stars ejected by SMBBHs may form a significant sub-population with very different kinematics and mean metallicity than the bulk of the intracluster stars. Th…
We present the results of a wide-field [O III] $λ5007$ survey for planetary nebulae (PN) in M87 and its surrounding halo. We show that the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) of M87's halo is unlike any PNLF observed to date, with a shape that differs from that of the empirical law at the 99.9% confidence level. In addition, we find that the PNLF of M87's outer halo differs from that of the galaxy's inner regions at a high degree of certainty ($\sim 92%$). We show that both these effects are most likely due to the existence of intracluster PN, many of which are foreground to M87. These…
We present two pieces of evidence supporting the hypothesis that the bright [OIII] lambda 5007 sources found in Virgo's intracluster space are intracluster planetary nebulae, rather than [OII] lambda 3727 galaxies at z ~ 0.35 or Ly-alpha sources at z ~ 3.13. First, we confirm the nature of five ``overluminous'' [OIII] sources that are postulated to lie in front of M87: by examining the composite spectrum of these objects, we show that the weaker [OIII] line at lambda 4959 is definitely present at a strength ~ 1/3 that of [OIII] lambda 5007. The ratio demonstrates that, at most, only one of the…
We have investigated the properties of the diffuse light in the Virgo cluster core region, based on the detection of intracluster planetary nebulae (PNe) in four fields. We eliminate the bias from misclassified faint continuum objects, using improved Monte Carlo simulations, and the contaminations by high redshift Ly$α$ galaxies, using the Ly$α$ luminosity function in blank fields. Recent spectroscopic observations confirm that our photometric PN samples are well-understood. We find that the diffuse stellar population in the Virgo core region is inhomogeneous on scales of 30'-90': there exist …
We use a multi million particle N-body + SPH simulation to follow the formation of a rich galaxy cluster in a Lambda+CDM cosmology, with the goal of understanding the origin and properties of intracluster stars. The simulation includes gas cooling, star formation, the effects of a uniform UVB and feedback from supernovae. Halos that host galaxies as faint as M_R = -19.0 are resolved by this simulation, which includes 85% of the total galaxy luminosity in a rich cluster. We find that the accumulation of intracluster light (ICL) is an ongoing process, linked to infall and stripping events. The u…
We have used the WFPC2 camera of the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain deep F814W images of a blank field in the Virgo Cluster located 41 arcmin northwest of M87. We perform star counts in that field, and in another Virgo field observed by Ferguson, Tanvir & von Hippel (1998), and show that, when compared to the Hubble Deep Field North and South, the Virgo Cluster contains an excess of objects with magnitudes I > 27. We attribute this excess to a population of intracluster red-giant branch (IC-RGB) stars. By modeling the luminosity function of these stars, we show that the tip of the Virgo RGB …
We combine optical (HST) and UV (GALEX) imaging of two intermediate redshift galaxy clusters with spectroscopy of member galaxies, to study the relation between the formation history of cluster galaxies and the assembly history of the cluster structure itself. We identify key differences in the large-scale structure and intracluster medium properties of each cluster. In order to assess the importance of cluster substructure and the ICM in the evolution of cluster galaxies, we examine several key indicators of the recent star-formation and assembly history of cluster galaxies. We find that gala…
We present deep optical imaging of the inner 1.5 x 1.5 degrees of the Virgo cluster to search for diffuse intracluster light (ICL). Our image reaches a 1 sigma depth of mu_v=28.5 mag/arcsec^2 -- 1.5 mag/arcsec^2 deeper than previous surveys -- and reveals an intricate web of diffuse intracluster light. We see several long (>100 kpc) tidal streamers, as well as a myriad of smaller-scale tidal tails and bridges between galaxies. The diffuse halo of M87 is traced out to nearly 200 kpc, appearing very irregular on these scales, while significant diffuse light is also detected around the M84/M86 pa…
We report the results of an [O III] lambda 5007 survey for planetary nebulae (PN) in five galaxies that were hosts of well-observed Type Ia supernovae: NGC 524, NGC 1316, NGC 1380, NGC 1448 and NGC 4526. The goals of this survey are to better quantify the zero-point of the maximum magnitude versus decline rate relation for supernovae Type Ia and to validate the insensitivity of Type Ia luminosity to parent stellar population using the host galaxy Hubble type as a surrogate. We detected a total of 45 planetary nebulae candidates in NGC 1316, 44 candidates in NGC 1380, and 94 candidates in NGC 4…
The close correlation between cooling flows and emission-line nebulae in clusters of galaxies has been recognized for over a decade and a half, but the physical reason for this connection remains unclear. Here we present deep optical spectra of the nebula in Abell 2597, one of the nearest strong cooling-flow clusters. These spectra reveal the density, temperature, and metal abundances of the line-emitting gas. The abundances are roughly half-solar, and dust produces an extinction of at least a magnitude in V. The absence of [O III] 4363 emission rules out shocks as a major ionizing mechanism, …
Narrow-band imaging surveys aimed at detecting the faint emission from the 5007 [O III] line of intracluster planetary nebulae in Virgo also probe high redshift z=3.1 Ly alpha emitters. Here we report on the spectroscopic identification of 9 Ly alpha emitters at z=3.13, obtained with the FORS spectrograph at Unit 1 of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT UT1). The spectra of these high redshift objects show a narrow, isolated Ly alpha emission with very faint (frequently undetected) continuum, indicating a large equivalent width. No other features are visible in our spectra. Our Ly alpha emitters…
We develop a model for the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) that combines a cosmological non-radiative hydrodynamical N-Body/SPH simulation of a cluster of galaxies, and a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. The novel feature of our hybrid model is that the chemical properties of the diffuse gas in the underlying simulation are dynamically and consistently generated from stars in the galaxies. We follow the production of several chemical elements, provided by low- and intermediate-mass stars, core collapse and type Ia supernovae. We analyse the spatial distribution of met…
