N-body simulations have shown that the dynamical decay of the young (~1 Myr) Orion Nebula cluster could be responsible for the loss of at least half of its initial content of OB stars. This result suggests that other young stellar systems could also lose a significant fraction of their massive stars at the very beginning of their evolution. To confirm this expectation, we used the Mid-Infrared Galactic Plane Survey (completed by the Midcourse Space Experiment satellite) to search for bow shocks around a number of young ($\la$ several Myr) clusters and OB associations. We discovered dozens of bow shocks generated by OB stars running away from these stellar systems, supporting the idea of significant dynamical loss of OB stars. In this paper, we report the discovery of three bow shocks produced by O-type stars ejected from the open cluster NGC6611 (M16). One of the bow shocks is associated with the O9.5Iab star HD165319, which was suggested to be one of "the best examples for isolated Galactic high-mass star formation" (de Wit et al. 2005, A&A, 437, 247). Possible implications of our results for the origin of field OB stars are discussed.
We report on absolute proper-motion measurements of an H2O maser source in the NGC 281 West molecular cloud, which is located ~320 pc above the Galactic plane and is associated with an HI loop extending from the Galactic plane. We have conducted multi-epoch phase-referencing observations of the maser source with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) over a monitoring period of 6 months since May 2006. We find that the H2O maser features in NGC 281 West are systematically moving toward the southwest and further away from the Galactic plane with a vertical velocity of ~20-30 km/s at its es…
We have discovered 6 10^7 M_{\odot} of atomic gas at a projected distance greater than 4' (20 kpc) from the highly inclined Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4388. This gas is most probably connected to the very extended Hαplume detected by Yoshida et al. (2002). Its mass makes a nuclear outflow and its radial velocity a minor merger as the origin of the atomic and ionized gas very unlikely. A numerical ram pressure simulation can account for the observed HI spectrum and the morphology of the Hαplume. An additional outflow mechanism is still needed to reproduce the velocity field of the inner Hαplume. T…
The galaxy cluster RXJ 0152.7-1357 is emitting X-rays at the high rate of 148 counts $ks^{-1}$. It would be one of the most luminous X-ray clusters known if it is at its redshift distance of z = .8325. It is conspicuously elongated, however, toward the bright, X-ray active galaxy NGC 720 about 14 arcmin away. At the same distance on the other side of NGC 720, and almost perfectly aligned, is an X-ray BSO of 5.8 cts/ks. It is reported here that the redshift of this quasar is z = .8312.
The aim is to investigate the region of the sky around NGC4410/Mrk1325 for objects which are physically associated with this active, double nucleus galaxy. We use archived data to study the placement, brightness, X-ray properties and redshifts of objects within 60' of the bright, central galaxy. It is found that pairs of quasars are aligned across NGC 4410 which, if ejected from it, have equal and opposite ejection velocities and fall very close to the quantized Karlsson redshift peaks for quasars. X-ray sources and Abell galaxy clusters at higher redshifts appear elongated along directions aw…
We present deep HST ACS/WFC photometry of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569, one of the closest and strongest nearby starburst galaxies. These data allow us, for the first time, to unequivocally detect the tip of the red giant branch and thereby determine the distance to NGC 1569. We find that this galaxy is 3.36 +/- 0.20 Mpc away, considerably farther away than the typically assumed distance of 2.2 +/- 0.6 Mpc. Previously thought to be an isolated galaxy due to its shorter distance, our new distance firmly establishes NGC 1569 as a member of the IC 342 group of galaxies. The higher density …
We present CCD UBVI observations obtained in the field of the previously unstudied northern open clusters NGC 133 and NGC 1348. We argue that NGC 133 is a heavily contaminated cluster, for which we identify 13 candidate members down to $V$=14.50 mag on the basis of the position in the two-color Diagram . Membership has been checked against proper motions from Tycho~2, whenever available. The cluster turns out to have a reddening E$(B-V)=0.60\pm0.10$ mag, to be $630\pm150$ pc distant from the Sun, and to have an age less than 10 Myrs. NGC 1348 is a more reddened cluster (E$(B-V)=0.85\pm0.15$ ma…
We present CCD UBVI photometry of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 6939 for three TNG-DOLORES fields. The fields A and B cover the center of the cluster; the third one is located about 30 arcmin away, and is used for field stars decontamination. The V-I, B-V and U-B color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), obtained joining very different exposures show: i) a Main Sequence (MS) extending down to V = 24, much deeper (~ 5 magnitudes) than any previous study; ii) a clearly defined Turn Off (TO) and iii) a well populated Red Giant Clump (RC) at about V = 13.
Water vapor emission at 22 GHz is reported from the nucleus of the LINER galaxy Mrk 1419 (NGC 2960). Single-dish spectra of the maser source show properties that are similar to those seen in NGC 4258, namely (1) a cluster of systemic H2O features, (2) two additional H2O clusters, one red- and one blue-shifted by about 475 km/s, (3) a likely acceleration of the systemic features, and (4) no detectable velocity drifts in the red- and blue-shifted features. Interpreting the data in terms of the paradigm established for NGC 4258, i.e. assuming the presence of an edge-on Keplerian circumnuclear ann…
Hubble Space Telescope images of the galaxies NGC 2207 and IC 2163 show star formation and dust structures in a system that has experienced a recent grazing encounter. Tidal forces from NGC 2207 compressed and elongated the disk of IC 2163, forming an oval ridge of star formation. Gas flowing away from this ridge has thin parallel dust filaments transverse to the direction of motion. Numerical models suggest that the filaments come from flocculent spiral arms that were present before the interaction. A dust lane at the outer edge of the tidal tail is a shock front where the flow abruptly chang…
We report the discovery of three new star clusters in the halo of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. These clusters were found in the deep images taken with the MegaPrime at the CFHT, covering a total field of 2 deg x 2 deg. The most remote cluster is found to be located as far as 79 arcmin away from the center of NGC 6822. This distance is several times larger than the size of the region in NGC 6822 where star clusters were previously found. Morphological structures of the clusters and color-magnitude diagrams of the resolved stars in the clusters show that at least two of these…
The extinction law and the variation of colour excess with position, luminosity as well as spectral class in young open star clusters NGC 663, NGC869, NGC 884, NGC 1502, NGC 1893, NGC 2244, NGC 2264, NGC 6611, Tr 14, Tr 15,Tr 16, Coll 228, Tr 37 and Be 86 have been studied. The difference in the minimum and maximum values of E(B-V) of cluster members has been considered as a measure of the presence of non-uniform gas and dust inside the clusters. Its value ranges from 0.22 to 1.03 mag in clusters under study, which indicates that non-uniform extinction is present in all the clusters. It has be…
We present images of the 7mm free-free emission from the radio "supernebula" in NGC 5253 made with the Very Large Array and the Pie Town link. The images reveal structure in the nebula, which has a <~ 1 pc (~50 mas radius) core requiring the excitation of 1200 O7 stars. The nebula is elongated, with an arc of emission curving to the northeast and to the south. The total ionizing flux within the central 1.2" (~20 pc) is 7 x 10^52 s^-1, corresponding to 7000 O7 stars. We propose that the radio source is coincident with a small, very red near-infrared cluster and apparently linked to a larger, op…
We present new radio continuum data at 4 frequencies on the supermassive, peculiar galaxy NGC 1961. These observations allow us to separate the thermal and the nonthermal radio emission and to determine the nonthermal spectral index distribution. This spectral index distribution in the galactic disk is unusual: at the maxima of the radio emission the synchrotron spectrum is very steep, indicating aged cosmic ray electrons. Away from the maxima the spectrum is much flatter. The steep spectrum of the synchrotron emission at the maxima indicates that a strong decline of the star formation rate ha…
We present spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and ionized gas within the Galactic giant HII region NGC3603. Using the IRS instrument on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we study in particular the PAH emission features at ~5.7, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3um, and the [ArII] 6.99um, [NeII] 12.81um, [ArIII] 8.99um, and [SIV] 10.51um forbidden emission lines. The observations probe both ionized regions and photodissociation regions. Silicate emission is detected close to the central cluster while silicate absorption is seen further away. We find no significant variation of the P…
Using two epochs of HST/WFPC2 images of the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6528 we derive the proper motions of the stars and use them to separate the stars belonging to NGC 6528 from those of the Galactic bulge. The stellar sequences in theresulting colour-magnitude diagram for the cluster are significantly better determined than in previously published data. From comparison of the colour-magnitude diagram with the fiducial line for NGC 6553 from Zoccali et al. (2001) we conclude that the two globular clusters have the same age. Further, using alpha-enhanced stellar isochrones, NGC 6528 is f…
Close to its center, the bulgeless galaxy NGC 2139 hosts a star cluster that is younger and less massive than any actual nuclear star cluster (NC) studied so far. We have measured the H-alpha velocity field around the photometric center of this galaxy using the VLT ARGUS integral field unit and GIRAFFE spectrograph in order to constrain different proposed theories of NC formation. We observe that the best-fit kinematic center and the candidate NC appear to be separated by 2.8 arcsec (320 pc). Indeed, the kinematic center also is offset from the galaxy's photometric center and a possible bar or…
We present a technique to extract ultra-deep diffuse-light spectra from the standard multi-object spectroscopic observations used to investigate extragalactic globular cluster (GC) systems. This technique allows a clean extraction of the spectrum of the host galaxy diffuse light from the same slitlets as the GC targets. We show the utility of the method for investigating the kinematics and stellar populations of galaxies at radii much greater than usually probed in longslit studies, at no additional expense in terms of telescope time. To demonstrate this technique we present Gemini/GMOS spectr…
The Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) has been used to make aperture synthesis CO(1-0) observations of the post-starburst galaxy NGC 5195. CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) observations of NGC 5195 using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope are also presented. High-resolution (1".9 x 1".8 or 86 pc x 81 pc at D = 9.3 Mpc) NMA maps show a strong concentration of CO emission toward the central a few 100 pc region of NGC 5195, despite the fact that the current massive star formation is suppressed there. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio on the brightness temperature scale, R_{HCN/CO}, is about 0.02 within the cent…
We present evidence that the star-forming region NGC 346/N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud is the product of hierarchical star formation, probably from more than one star formation event. We investigate the spatial distribution and clustering behavior of the pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar population in the region, using data obtained with Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. By applying the nearest neighbor and minimum spanning tree methods on the rich sample of PMS stars previously discovered in the region we identify ten individual PMS clusters in the area and quantify thei…
Context:Ages derived from the low mass stars still contracting onto the main sequence often differ from ages derived from the high mass ones that have already evolved away from it. Aims:We investigate the general claim of disagreement between these two independent age determinations by presenting UBVRI photometry of the young galactic open clusters NGC 2232, NGC 2516, NGC 2547 and NGC 4755, spanning the age range ~10-150 Myr Methods: We derive reddenings, distances and nuclear ages by fitting ZAMS and isochrones to color-magnitudes and color-color diagrams. To derive contraction ages, we use f…
Deep wide-field H$α$+[NII] imaging around the Virgo cluster giant elliptical galaxy M86 reveals a highly complex and disturbed ISM/ICM. The most striking feature is a set of H$α$ filaments which clearly connect M86 with the nearby disturbed spiral NGC 4438 (23$'$=120 kpc projected away), providing strong evidence for a previously unrecognized collision between them. Spectroscopy of selected regions show a fairly smooth velocity gradient between M86 and NGC 4438, consistent with the collision scenario. Such a collision would impart significant energy into the ISM of M86, probably heating the ga…
The earliest phases of massive star formation in clusters are still poorly understood. Here, we test the hypothesis for high-mass star formation proposed in our earlier paper (Peretto et al. 2006). In order to confirm the physical validity of this hypothesis, we carried out IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer observations of NGC 2264-C and performed SPH numerical simulations of the collapse of a Jeans-unstable, prolate dense clump. Our Plateau de Bure observations reveal the presence of a new compact source (C-MM13) located only \~ 10000 AU away, but separated by ~ 1.1 km/s in (projected) velo…
The relation between the zero-age main sequence mass of a star and its white-dwarf remnant (the initial-final mass relation) is a powerful tool for exploration of mass loss processes during stellar evolution. We present an empirical derivation of the initial-final mass relation based on spectroscopic analysis of seven massive white dwarfs in NGC 2168 (M35). Using an internally consistent data set, we show that the resultant white dwarf mass increases monotonically with progenitor mass for masses greater than 4 solar masses, one of the first open clusters to show this trend. We also find two ma…
We present a photometric investigation of the globular cluster population of NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, in Washington C and Kron R filters within a field of 36'x36'. This is the largest area around this galaxy ever studied with CCD photometry. The cluster system of NGC 1399 is found to extend further than 100 kpc away from the galaxy. The color distribution exhibits a pronounced bimodality. Within a radial distance of about 55 kpc, the red clusters are more strongly concentrated to the center than the blueclusters. At larger radii, the surface density profiles of the c…
We present new HST/WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for the red-giant stars in NGC 5128 at a projected distance of 8 kpc from the galaxy center, which probe a mixture of its inner halo and outer bulge. The color-magnitude diagram shows an old red-giant branch which is even broader in color than our two previously studied outer-halo fields (at 21 and 31 kpc), with significant numbers of stars extending to Solar metallicity and higher. The peak frequency of the metallicity distribution function (MDF) is at [m/H] ~ -0.4, with even fewer metal-poor stars than in the outer-halo fields. We find that the main …
We have conducted deep JHKs imaging polarimetry of a ~8' x 8' area of the NGC 2071 star forming region. Our polarization data have revealed various infrared reflection nebulae (IRNe) associated with the central IR young star cluster NGC2071IR and identified their illuminating sources. There are at least 4 IRNe in NGC2071IR and several additional IRNe are identified around nearby young stars in the same field-of-view. Each illuminating source coincides with a known near-IR source except for IRS3, which is only a part of IRN2 and is illuminated by the radio source 1c. Aperture polarimetry of eac…
We report the discovery of three proplyd-like structures in the giant HII region NGC 3603. The emission nebulae are clearly resolved in narrow-band and broad-band HST/WFPC2 observations in the optical and broad-band VLT/ISAAC observations in the near-infrared. All three nebulae are tadpole shaped, with the bright ionization front at the head facing the central cluster and a fainter ionization front around the tail pointing away from the cluster. Typical sizes are 6,000 A.U. x 20,000 A.U. The nebulae share the overall morphology of the proplyds (``PROto PLanetarY DiskS'') in Orion, but are 20 t…
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study ram-pressure stripping in NGC4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show a sharp leading edge in the surface brightness 3.1 kpc north of the galaxy center, a cool (kT =0.51^{+0.09}_{-0.06} keV) tail with mean density n_e ~5.4 +/- 1.7 x 10^{-3} cm^{-3} extending ~10 kpc to the south of the galaxy, and two 3-4 kpc horns of emission extending southward away from the leading edge. These are all features characteristic of supersonic ram-pressure stripping of galaxy gas, due to NGC4552's motion through…
We report the detection of CO(2-1) and 3.1 mm and 1.3 mm continuum emission towards the extremely young starburst in NGC 5253, with data taken from the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. Faint CO emission originates in five molecular clouds distributed along the prominent dust lane seen in visual images. With the gas, the morphology of NGC 5253 looks much like a dwarf elliptical version of the ``dust-lane ellipticals'' or ``polar-ring'' class of galaxies. The molecular gas resides in GMCs well away from the radio-IR super-star cluster/supernebula seen in the radio and infrared. The millimeter cont…
We report the discovery of a dozen Herbig-Haro jets illuminated by the Lyman continuum and/or softer far-ultraviolet radiation fields of nearby high mass stars. Five irradiated outflows lie in the outer parts of the Orion Nebula and seven lie near the reflection nebula NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud. We propose that the UV radiation field has eroded residual material left over from the formation of these young source stars. Many of the irradiated jets exhibit unusual C-shaped bending. In the outskirts of the Orion Nebula, most irradiated jets bend away from the core of the nebula. On …
A dynamical model including ram pressure stripping is applied to the strongly HI deficient Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. A carefully chosen model snapshot is compared with existing VLA HI observations. The model successfully reproduces the large-scale gas distribution and the velocity field. However it fails to reproduce the large observed HI linewidths in the extraplanar component, for which we give possible explanations. In a second step, we solve the induction equation on the velocity fields of the dynamical model and calculate the large scale magnetic field. Assuming a Gaussian distributio…
We present new VLA C+D-array HI observations and optical and NIR imaging of the well known interacting system NGC 4038/9, ``The Antennae''. The radio data reveal a wealth of gaseous sub-structure both within the main bodies of the galaxies and along the tidal tails. In agreement with previous HI studies, we find that the northern tail has HI along its outer length, but none along its base. We suggest that the HI at the base of this tail has been ionized by massive stars in the disk of NGC 4038. The gas in the southern tail has a bifurcated structure, with one filament lying along the optical t…
From deep color-magnitude arrays made from V and I images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2 camera we have determined luminosity functions (LFs) down to a level that corresponds to about 0.13 solar masses, for the low-metal-abundance globular clusters M15, M30, M92, and NGC 6397. Because of the similarity of the metallicities of these clusters, differences in their luminosity functions directly trace differences in their mass functions. The LFs of M15, M30, and M92 agree closely over the entire observed range, whereas that of NGC 6397 drops away sharply at the faintest magnitudes. …
Here we present a self-consistent stationary solution for spherically symmetric winds driven by massive star clusters under the impact of radiative cooling. We demonstrate that cooling may modify drastically the distribution of temperature if the rate of injected energy approaches a critical value. We also prove that the stationary wind solution does not exist whenever the energy radiated away at the star cluster center exceeds ~ 30% of the energy deposition rate. Finally we thoroughly discuss the expected appearance of super-star cluster winds in the X-ray and visible line regimes. The three …
We present results from a wide-field imaging study of the globular cluster (GC) systems of a sample of edge-on, Sb-Sc spiral galaxies ~7-20 Mpc away. This study is part of a larger survey of the ensemble properties of the GC populations of giant galaxies. We imaged the galaxies in BVR filters with large-format CCD detectors on the WIYN 3.5-m telescope, to projected radii of ~20-40 kpc. For four galaxies (NGC 2683, NGC 3556, NGC 4157, and NGC 7331), we quantify the radial distributions of the GC systems and estimate the total number, luminosity- and mass-normalized specific frequencies (S_N and…
We present UBVJHKHalpha and HI data of the irregular galaxy NGC 2366. It is a normal boxy-shaped disk seen at high inclination angle. We do not see any unambiguous observational signature of a bar. There is an asymmetrical extension of stars along one end of the major axis of the galaxy, and this is where the furthest star-forming regions are found, at 1.3R_Holmberg. The HI is normal in many respects but shows some anomalies: 1) The integrated HI shows two ridges running parallel to the major axis that deproject to a large ring. 2) The velocity field exhibits several large-scale anomalies supe…
Aims: NGC 1530 has one of the strongest bars ever observed and recent star formation sites are distributed across its bar. Our aim is to study the photometric properties of the bar and its HII regions, to elucidate the conditions under which HII regions form and their spatial relation to the principal dynamical features of the bar. Methods: We obtained BVRKs and Halpha photometry of the HII regions of the bar in NGC 1530. Broad-band integrated colours and Halpha equivalent widths were carefully measured and analysed as a function of position with respect to the main dust-lanes of the bar. Resu…
We present high-resolution images of the strongly bipolar planetary nebula NGC 6537, obtained with Hubble Space Telescope and with the infrared adaptive optics system on the Very Large Telescope. The central star is detected for the first time. Using the multi-band photometry and constraints from the dynamical age of the nebula, we derive a temperature in the range 1.5-2.5 10^5 K, a luminosity~10^3 L_sun and a core mass M_c~0.7-0.9 M_sun. The progenitor mass is probably in the range M_i = 3-7 M_sun. The extinction map shows a largely symmetric, and compact dust structure, which is most likely …
