Equation of state for hard sphere fluids with and without Kac tails

In this note, we propose a simple derivation of the one dimensional hard rod equation of state, with and without a Kac tail (appended long range and weak potential). The case of hard spheres in higher dimension is also addressed and it is shown there that our arguments --which avoid any mathematical complication-- allow to recover the virial form of the equation of state in a direct way.

One-dimensional Kac model of dense amorphous hard spheres

We introduce a new model of hard spheres under confinement for the study of the glass and jamming transitions. The model is an one-dimensional chain of the $d$-dimensional boxes each of which contains the same number of hard spheres, and the particles in the boxes of the ends of the chain are quenched at their equilibrium positions. Unexpected Density Fluctuations in Jammed Disordered Sphere Packings

We computationally study jammed disordered hard-sphere packings as large as a million particles. We show that the packings are saturated and hyperuniform, i.e., that local density fluctuations grow only as a logarithmically-augmented surface area rather than the volume of the window. The structure factor shows an unusual non-analytic linear dependence near the origin, $S(k)\sim|k|$. In addition to exponentially damped oscillations seen in liquids, this implies a weak power-law tail in the total correlation function, $h(r)\sim-r^{-4}$, and a long-ranged direct correlation function.

Scaling Solutions of Inelastic Boltzmann Equations with Over-populated High Energy Tails

This paper deals with solutions of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation for spatially uniform freely cooling inelastic Maxwell models for large times and for large velocities, and the nonuniform convergence to these limits. Subdiffusion and intermittent dynamic fluctuations in the aging regime of concentrated hard spheres

We study the nonequilibrium aging dynamics in a system of quasi-hard spheres at large density by means of computer simulations. We find that, after a sudden quench to large density, the relaxation time initially increases exponentially with the age of the system. After a surprisingly large crossover time, the system enters the asymptotic aging regime characterized by a linear increase of the relaxation time with age. The Boltzmann equation for driven systems of inelastic soft spheres

We study a generic class of inelastic soft sphere models with a binary collision rate $g^ν$ that depends on the relative velocity $g$. Determining liquid structure from the tail of the direct correlation function

In important early work, Stell showed that one can determine the pair correlation function h(r) of the hard sphere fluid for all distances r by specifying only the "tail" of the direct correlation function c(r) at separations greater than the hard core diameter. A classical long-time tail in a driven granular fluid

I derive a mode-coupling theory for the velocity autocorrelation function, ψ(t), in a fluid of randomly driven inelastic hard spheres far from equilibrium. With this, I confirm a conjecture from simulations that the velocity autocorrelation function decays algebraically, ψ(t) ~ t^{-3/2}, if momentum is conserved. I show that the slow decay is due to the coupling to transverse currents.

Moment inequalities and high-energy tails for the Boltzmann equations with inelastic interactions

We study the high-energy asymptotics of the steady velocity distributions for model systems of granular media in various regimes. The main results obtained are integral estimates of solutions of the hard-sphere Boltzmann equations, which imply that the velocity distribution functions $f(v)$ behave in a certain sense as $C\exp(-r|v|^s)$ for $|v|$ large.
