The article describes an investigation of the effectiveness of genetic algorithms for multi-objective combinatorial optimization (MOCO) by presenting an application for the vehicle routing problem with soft time windows. The work is motivated by the question, if and how the problem structure influences the effectiveness of different configurations of the genetic algorithm. Computational results are presented for different classes of vehicle routing problems, varying in their coverage with time windows, time window size, distribution and number of customers. The results are compared with a simple, but effective local search approach for multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems.

Traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a well-known in computing field. There are many researches to improve the genetic algorithm for solving TSP. In this paper, we propose two new crossover operators and new mechanism of combination crossover operators in genetic algorithm for solving TSP. We experimented on TSP instances from TSP-Lib and compared the results of proposed algorithm with genetic algorithm (GA), which used MSCX. Experimental results show that, our proposed algorithm is better than the GA using MSCX on the min, mean cost values.
In this thesis we propose new methods for crossover operator namely: cut on worst gene (COWGC), cut on worst L+R gene (COWLRGC) and Collision Crossovers. And also we propose several types of mutation operator such as: worst gene with random gene mutation (WGWRGM) , worst LR gene with random gene mutation (WLRGWRGM), worst gene with worst gene mutation (WGWWGM), worst gene with nearest neighbour mutation (WGWNNM), worst gene with the worst around the nearest neighbour mutation (WGWWNNM), worst gene inserted beside nearest neighbour mutation (WGIBNNM), random gene inserted beside nearest neighbo…

This paper addresses the Traveling Salesman Problem with Drone (TSP-D), in which a truck and drone are used to deliver parcels to customers. The objective of this problem is to either minimize the total operational cost (min-cost TSP-D) or minimize the completion time for the truck and drone (min-time TSP-D). This problem has gained a lot of attention in the last few years since it is matched with the recent trends in a new delivery method among logistics companies. To solve the TSP-D, we propose a hybrid genetic search with dynamic population management and adaptive diversity control based on…

Multitasking optimization is a recently introduced paradigm, focused on the simultaneous solving of multiple optimization problem instances (tasks). The goal of multitasking environments is to dynamically exploit existing complementarities and synergies among tasks, helping each other through the transfer of genetic material. More concretely, Evolutionary Multitasking (EM) regards to the resolution of multitasking scenarios using concepts inherited from Evolutionary Computation. EM approaches such as the well-known Multifactorial Evolutionary Algorithm (MFEA) are lately gaining a notable resea…
The hyperclimbing hypothesis is a hypothetical explanation for adaptation in genetic algorithms with uniform crossover (UGAs). Hyperclimbing is an intuitive, general-purpose, non-local search heuristic applicable to discrete product spaces with rugged or stochastic cost functions. The strength of this heuristic lie in its insusceptibility to local optima when the cost function is deterministic, and its tolerance for noise when the cost function is stochastic. Hyperclimbing works by decimating a search space, i.e. by iteratively fixing the values of small numbers of variables. The hyperclimbing…

Universal induction relies on some general search procedure that is doomed to be inefficient. One possibility to achieve both generality and efficiency is to specialize this procedure w.r.t. any given narrow task. However, complete specialization that implies direct mapping from the task parameters to solutions (discriminative models) without search is not always possible. In this paper, partial specialization of general search is considered in the form of genetic algorithms (GAs) with a specialized crossover operator. We perform a feasibility study of this idea implementing such an operator i…

In the physical design of integrated circuits, global and detailed routing are critical stages involving the determination of the interconnected paths of each net on a circuit while satisfying the design constraints. Existing actual routers as well as routability predictors either have to resort to expensive approaches that lead to high computational times, or use heuristics that do not generalize well. Even though new, learning-based routing methods have been proposed to address this need, requirements on labelled data and difficulties in addressing complex design rule constraints have limite…
Detailed routing is one of the most critical steps in analog circuit design. Complete routing has become increasingly more challenging in advanced node analog circuits, making advances in efficient automatic routers ever more necessary. In this work, we propose a machine learning driven method for solving the track-assignment detailed routing problem for advanced node analog circuits. Our approach adopts an attention-based reinforcement learning (RL) policy model. Our main insight and advancement over this RL model is the use of supervision as a way to leverage solutions generated by a convent…
This paper establishes theoretical bonafides for implicit concurrent multivariate effect evaluation--implicit concurrency for short---a broad and versatile computational learning efficiency thought to underlie general-purpose, non-local, noise-tolerant optimization in genetic algorithms with uniform crossover (UGAs). We demonstrate that implicit concurrency is indeed a form of efficient learning by showing that it can be used to obtain close-to-optimal bounds on the time and queries required to approximately correctly solve a constrained version (k=7, η=1/5) of a recognizable computational lea…
Artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm has proved its importance in solving a number of problems including engineering optimization problems. ABC algorithm is one of the most popular and youngest member of the family of population based nature inspired meta-heuristic swarm intelligence method. ABC has been proved its superiority over some other Nature Inspired Algorithms (NIA) when applied for both benchmark functions and real world problems. The performance of search process of ABC depends on a random value which tries to balance exploration and exploitation phase. In order to increase the per…
A genetic programming (GP) variant called traceless genetic programming (TGP) is proposed in this paper. TGP is a hybrid method combining a technique for building individuals and a technique for representing individuals. The main difference between TGP and other GP techniques is that TGP does not explicitly store the evolved computer programs. Two genetic operators are used in conjunction with TGP: crossover and insertion. TGP is applied for evolving digital circuits for the even-parity problem. Numerical experiments show that TGP outperforms standard GP with several orders of magnitude.

We apply genetic programming techniques to the `shepherding' problem, in which a group of one type of animal (sheep dogs) attempts to control the movements of a second group of animals (sheep) obeying flocking behavior. Our genetic programming algorithm evolves an expression tree that governs the movements of each dog. The operands of the tree are hand-selected features of the simulation environment that may allow the dogs to herd the sheep effectively. The algorithm uses tournament-style selection, crossover reproduction, and a point mutation. We find that the evolved solutions generalize wel…

A genetic algorithm is suitable for exploring large search spaces as it finds an approximate solution. Because of this advantage, genetic algorithm is effective in exploring vast and unknown space such as molecular search space. Though the algorithm is suitable for searching vast chemical space, it is difficult to optimize pharmacological properties while maintaining molecular substructure. To solve this issue, we introduce a genetic algorithm featuring a constrained molecular inverse design. The proposed algorithm successfully produces valid molecules for crossover and mutation. Furthermore, …
Traceless Genetic Programming (TGP) is a Genetic Programming (GP) variant that is used in cases where the focus is rather the output of the program than the program itself. The main difference between TGP and other GP techniques is that TGP does not explicitly store the evolved computer programs. Two genetic operators are used in conjunction with TGP: crossover and insertion. In this paper, we shall focus on how to apply TGP for solving multi-objective optimization problems which are quite unusual for GP. Each TGP individual stores the output of a computer program (tree) representing a point i…

We recently reported that the simple genetic algorithm (SGA) is capable of performing a remarkable form of sublinear computation which has a straightforward connection with the general problem of interacting attributes in data-mining. In this paper we explain how the SGA can leverage this computational proficiency to perform efficient adaptation on a broad class of fitness functions. Based on the relative ease with which a practical fitness function might belong to this broad class, we submit a new hypothesis about the workings of genetic algorithms. We explain why our hypothesis is superior t…

Autonomous spacecraft maneuver planning using an evolutionary algorithmic approach is investigated. Simulated spacecraft were placed into four different initial orbits. Each was allowed a string of thirty delta-v impulse maneuvers in six cartesian directions, the positive and negative x, y and z directions. The goal of the spacecraft maneuver string was to, starting from some non-polar starting orbit, place the spacecraft into a polar, low eccentricity orbit. A genetic algorithm was implemented, using a mating, fitness, mutation and crossover scheme for impulse strings. The genetic algorithm w…
The Zoetrope Genetic Programming (ZGP) algorithm is based on an original representation for mathematical expressions, targeting evolutionary symbolic regression. The zoetropic representation uses repeated fusion operations between partial expressions, starting from the terminal set. Repeated fusions within an individual gradually generate more complex expressions, ending up in what can be viewed as new features. These features are then linearly combined to best fit the training data. ZGP individuals then undergo specific crossover and mutation operators, and selection takes place between parent…
