We consider the easy-plane anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in combined uniform longitudinal and transverse staggered magnetic fields. The low-energy limit of his model is described by the sine-Gordon quantum field theory. Using methods of integrable quantum field theory we determine the various components of the dynamical structure factor. To do so, we derive explicit expressions for all matrix elements of the low-energy projections of the spin operators involving at most two particles. We discuss applications of our results to experiments on one-dimensional quantum magnets.
The Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain is considered in the massive antiferromagnetic regime in the presence of a staggered longitudinal magnetic field. The Hamiltonian of the model is characterised by the anisotropy parameter $Δ<-1$, and by the magnetic field strength h. At zero magnetic field, the model is exactly solvable. In the thermodynamic limit, it has two degenerate vacua and the kinks (which are also called spinons) interpolating between these vacua, as elementary excitations. Application of the staggered magnetic field breaks integrability of the model and induces the long-range attracti…
We present an interpolation method for the specific heat $c_v(T)$, when there is a phase transition with a logarithmic singularity in $c_v$ at a critical temperature $T=T_c$. The method uses the fact that $c_v$ is constrained both by its high temperature series expansion, and just above $T_c$ by the type of singularity. We test our method on the ferro and antiferromagnetic Ising model on the two-dimensional square, triangular, honeycomb, and kagome lattices, where we find an excellent agreement with the exact solutions. We then explore the XXZ Heisenberg model, for which no exact results are a…
By means of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique, we have studied the region where $XXZ$-like behavior is most likely to emerge within the phase diagram of the F-AF anisotropic extended ($J-J'$) Heisenberg chain. We have analyzed, in great detail, the equal-time two-spin correlation functions, both in- and out-of- plane, as functions of the distance (and momentum). Then, we have extracted, through an accurate fitting procedure, the exponents of the asymptotic power-law decay of the spatial correlations. We have used the exact solution of $XXZ$ model ($J'=0$) to benchmark our resu…
We consider the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg model on a frustrated diamond-chain lattice in a $z$- or $x$-aligned external magnetic field. We use the strong-coupling approach to elaborate an effective description in the low-temperature strong-field regime. The obtained effective models are spin-1/2 $XY$ chains which are exactly solvable through the Jordan-Wigner fermionization. We perform exact-diagonalization studies of the magnetization curves to test the quality of the effective description. The results may have relevance for the description of the azurite spin-chain compound…
We propose an efficient numerical method to obtain local order parameter in two-dimensional systems using spiral boundary conditions. As a benchmark, we first estimate the magnitude of staggered magnetization for the $S=1/2$ XXZ Heisenberg model on a square lattice in the whole range of the XXZ anisotropy by density-matrix renormalization group technique. The validity of our method is confirmed by comparing our results with the previous analytical and numerical studies. Then, as further demonstration, we apply our method to obtain the staggered magnetization for the higher-spin cases from $S=1…
We investigate the scaling properties of the excitation energies and transition amplitudes of the one-dimensional spin-$1\over 2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model exposed to an external perturbation. Two types of perturbations are discussed in detail: a staggered field and a dimerized field.
A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.
We have studied the energy gap of the 1D AF-Heisenberg model in the presence of both uniform ($H$) and staggered ($h$) magnetic fields using the exact diagonalization technique. We have found that the opening of the gap in the presence of a staggered field scales with $h^ν$, where $ν=ν(H)$ is the critical exponent and depends on the uniform field. With respect to the range of the staggered magnetic field, we have identified two regimes through which the $H$-dependence of the real critical exponent $ν(H)$ can be numerically calculated. Our numerical results are in good agreement with the result…
We introduce a new family of one dimensional liquids, which we label as ''Staggered-Liquids'', in the phase diagram of the 1D Kondo-Heisenberg model. It encompasses three distinct spin gapped liquids and a new Luttinger liquid phase. A Staggered Liquid is characterized by gapless modes with ''large fermi-sea'' signature in the charge density wave (CDW) mode, and in that the superconducting order involves the near condensation of charge-2e Cooper pairs with finite center of mass momentum. In particular, the conventional gapless $2k_{F}$ CDW and $k=0$ pairing modes are absent. In the process, we…
The magnetic behaviors of a spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered transverse magnetic field is studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group method and Jordan-Wigner transformation. Quantum phase transitions of different types are observed in the S=1 Neel and XY-like gapless phases, which result from the competitions between the staggered transverse field and magnetic orders induced by anisotropy and alternating interactions. The results are compared with the mean-field and some exactly resolved results.
We study the effect of anisotropy of spin-$S$ impurities on an antiferromagnetic SU(2) Heisenberg chain. The magnetic impurities are assumed to have an XXZ-type anisotropic exchange with its neighboring sites. First, using density-matrix renormalization group technique. we examine spin-spin correlation function, instability of Néel order, and local spin susceptibility in the presence of a single spin-$S$ impurity. Based on the results, we find that the types of spin-$S$ impurities are classified into two groups: $\rm(\hspace{.18em}i\hspace{.18em})$ nonmagnetic and $S=1$ impurities enhance only…
The magnetization curves and magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization of antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg clusters with the shape of Johnson's solids (triangular cupola, square cupola and pentagonal cupola) are investigated using the exact numerical diagonalization for different values of the exchange anisotropy ranging in between the Ising and fully isotropic limit. It is demonstrated that spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg cupolae display, in comparison with their Ising counterparts, at least one more magnetization plateau. The novel magnetization plateaux extends over a …
We study a generalized honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic 2-spin exchange, and competing 4-spin interactions which serve to stabilize a staggered dimer state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo numerics, spin wave theory, and bond operator theory, we show that this model undergoes a strong first-order transition between a Neel state and a staggered dimer state upon increasing the strength of the 4-spin interactions. We attribute the strong first order character of this transition to the spinless n…
We study the time evolution of the two-point correlation functions in the XXZ Heisenberg chain after a finite-time quantum quench in the anisotropy. We compare results from numerical simulations to ones obtained in the Luttinger model and find good agreement. We analyse the spreading of the correlations and the associated light-cone features. We observe a delay in the appearance of the light cone as compared to the sudden-quench setup, and link this delay to the properties of the quench protocol.
Most quantum entanglement investigations are focused on two qubits or some finite (small) chain structure, since the infinite chain structure is a considerably cumbersome task. Therefore, the quantum entanglement properties involving an infinite chain structure is quite important, not only because the mathematical calculation is cumbersome but also because real materials are well represented by an infinite chain. Thus, in this paper we consider an entangled diamond chain with Ising and anisotropic Heisenberg (Ising-XXZ) coupling. Two interstitial particles are coupled through Heisenberg coupli…
In the present paper, we consider two species of small spin clusters known as; two spin-1/2 Heisenberg edge-shared tetrahedra and spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedron with the corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya terms in a longitudinal magnetic field, then we examine magnetization process and electric polarization of the models as functions of magnetic and electric fields at Low temperature using exact numerical diagonalization. Our exact results are in a good agreement with recent analysis carried out by J. Strečka and K. Kar{\v l}ova \cite{str18b,str17a}. It is demonstrated that the polarization b…
We perform an exact diagonalization study of the spin-$1/2$ XXZ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice at finite magnetization $m = \frac{2}{3}$ with an emphasis on the XY point ($J_z = 0$), and in the presence of a small chiral term. Recent analytic work by Kumar, Sun and Fradkin [Phys. Rev. B 90, 174409 (2014)] on the same model, using a newly developed flux attachment transformation, predicts a plateau at this value of the magnetization described by a chiral spin liquid (CSL) with a spin Hall conductance of $σ_{xy} = \frac{1}{2}$. Such a state is topological in nature, has a groun…
We study the XXZ Heisenberg model in a longitudinal magnetic field using a tensor renormalization method. Built into the tensor representation of the XXZ model is the U(1) symmetry, which is systematically maintained at each renormalization step. This enables rather large tensor representations. We extract ground state properties as well as the low lying spectrum from the fixed point tensors. With rather moderate numerical effort we achieve a very good accuracy as demonstrated by comparison with Bethe Ansatz calculations. The phase structure of the model can be accurately reproduced just from …
We numerically investigate Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain in a spatially random static magnetic field. We find that tDMRG simulations of time evolution can be performed efficiently, namely the dimension of matrices needed to efficiently represent the time-evolution increases linearly with time and entanglement entropies for typical chain bipartitions increase logarithmically. As a result, we show that for large enough random fields infinite temperature spin-spin correlation function displays exponential localization in space indicating insulating behavior of the model.
We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in a staggered magnetic field describing materials such as copper benzoate and copper pyrimidine dinitrate. Using the density-matrix renormalization group for transfer matrices (TMRG) we calculate the magnetization of these materials at finite temperature and arbitrary magnetic field. These results are in excellent agreement with experimental data, allowing for a determination of the inhomogeneity parameter c of copper benzoate (c = 0.043) and copper pyrimidine dinitrate (c= 0.11). The TMRG approach can be applied to rather low temper…
We have studied the phase diagram of the one dimensional XXZ model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We have applied the quantum renormalization group (QRG) approach to get the stable fixed points, critical point and the scaling of coupling constants. This model has three phases, ferromagnetic, spin-fluid and Néel phases which are separated by a critical line which depends on the DM coupling constant. We have shown that the staggered magnetization is the order parameter of the system and investigated the influence of DM interaction on the chiral ordering as a helical magnetic order.
We study the interplay of electric and magnetic order in the one dimensional Heisenberg spin-1/2 XXZ chain with large Ising anisotropy in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (D-M) interaction and with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, interpreting the D-M interaction as a coupling between the local electric polarization and an external electric field. We obtain the ground state phase diagram using the density matrix renormalization group method and compute various ground state quantities like the magnetization, staggered magnetization, electric polarization and spin correlatio…
We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics after a local quench that connects two spin-1/2 XXZ chains prepared in the ground state of the Hamiltonian in different phases, one in the ferromagnetic phase and the other in the critical phase. We analyze the time evolution of the on-site magnetization and bipartite entanglement entropy via adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. In systems with short-range inter- actions, such as the one we consider, the velocity of information transfer is expected to be bounded, giving rise to a light-cone effect. Interestingly, our resul…
Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we calculate numerically the low energy excitation spectrum and magnetization curve of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered magnetic field, which is expected to describe the physics of $R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R \neq Y) $ family below the Néel temperature of the magnetic rare-earth ($R$) sublattice. These results are valid in the entire range of the staggered field, and agree with those given by the non-linear $σ$ model study for small fields, but differ from the latter for large fields. They are consistent with the available experi…
We present here a nonlinear sigma-model (NL$σ$M) study of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. We find, already at the mean-field level, excellent agreement with recent and very accurate Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) studies, and that up to the highest values of the field for which a comparison is possible, for the staggered magnetization and the transverse spin gap. Qualitative but not quantitative agreement is found between the NL$σ$M predictions for the longitudinal spin gap and the DMRG results. The origin of the di…
We study low-energy excitations in antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with a staggered field which splits the spectrum into a longitudinal and a transverse branch. Bound states are found to exist inside the field induced gap in both branches. They originate from the edge effects and are inherent to spin-chain materials. The sine-Gordon scaling $h_s^{2/3}|\log h_s|^{1/6}$ ($h_s$: the staggered field) provides an accurate description for the gap and midgap energies in the transverse branch for $S=1/2$ and the midgap energies in both branches for $S=3/2$ over a wide range of magnetic field; howe…
We have studied the excitation spectrum of the $S=1/2$ quantum spin ladder with staggered dimerization by dimer series expansions, diagrammatic analysis of an effective interacting Bose gas of local triplets, and exact diagonalization of small clusters. We find that the model has two massive phases, with predominant inter-chain (rung) or intra-chain correlations. The transition from the rung dimer into the intra-chain dimer phase is characterized by softening of the triplet spectrum at $k=π$. The excitation spectrum as well as the spin correlations away from and close to the critical line are …
By using the density matrix renormalization group, we study the spin-liquid phases of spin-$1/2$ XXZ kagome antiferromagnets. We find that the emergence of spin liquid phase does not depend on the anisotropy of the XXZ interaction. In particular, the two extreme limits---Ising (strong $S^z$ interaction) and XY (zero $S^z$ interaction)---host the same spin-liquid phases as the isotropic Heisenberg model. Both the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid and the chiral spin liquid with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking are obtained. We show they evolve continuously into each other by tuning…
We have investigated the ground state phase diagram of the 1D AF spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in an external uniform magnetic field $H$. We have used the exact diagonalization technique. In the absence of the uniform magnetic field (H=0), we have shown that the DM interaction induces a staggered chiral phase. The staggered chiral phase remains stable even in the presence of the uniform magnetic field. We have identified that the ground state phase diagram consists of four Luttinger liquid, staggered chiral, spin-flop, and ferromagnetic pha…
We present in this paper a nonlinear sigma-model analysis of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. After rediscussing briefly and extending previous results for the staggered magnetization curve, the core of the paper is a novel calculation, at the tree level, of the Green functions of the model. We obtain precise results for the elementary excitation spectrum and in particular for the spin gaps in the transverse and longitudinal channels. It is shown that, while the spectral weight in the transverse channel is exhausted by a single m…
We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) of a finite XXZ spin 1/2 chain in the limit Δ-> -1^+ for both open and periodic boundary conditions. At Δ=-1 (ferromagnetic point) the model is equivalent to the Heisenberg ferromagnet and its degenerate ground state manifold is the SU(2) multiplet with maximal total spin. Any state in this so-called "symmetric sector" is an equal weight superposition of all possible spin configurations. In the gapless phase at Δ>-1 this property is progressively lost as one moves away from the Δ=-1 point. We investigate how the ES obtained from the states in this manifo…
The phase diagram of the XXZ spin-1/2 magnet, equivalent to hard-core bosons, under a staggered magnetic field and on the Cairo pentagonal lattice is computed at zero and finite temperature by using a cluster mean field theory and a stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo. The complex connectivity and the frustration lead to unconventional phases such as a 1/3-ferrimagnetic plateau stabilized by quantum fluctuations as well as a 5/12-topological phase induced by a local ice-rule constraint. We also report the presence of a ferrimagnetic superfluid and its thermal melting. Finally, we di…
We study variable-rate linear quenches in the anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) chain, starting at the XX point. This is equivalent to switching on a nearest neighbour interaction for hard-core bosons or an interaction quench for free fermions. The physical observables we investigate are: the energy pumped into the system during the quench, the spin-flip correlation function, and the bipartite fluctuations of the z component of the spin in a box. We find excellent agreement between exact numerics (infinite system time-evolving block decimation, iTEBD) and analytical results from bosonization, as a …
The infinite Heisenberg XXZ spin-(1/2) chain in the gapped antiferromagnetic regime has two degenerate vacua and kink topological excitations (which are also called spinons) interpolating between these vacua as elementary excitations. Application of an arbitrary weak staggered longitudinal magnetic field h induces a long-range attractive potential between two adjacent spinons leading to their confinement into 'meson' bound states. Exploiting the integrability of the XXZ model in the deconfined phase h = 0, we perform perturbative calculations of the energy spectra of the two-spinon bound state…
Dynamical correlation functions contain important physical information on correlated spin models. Here a dynamical theory suitable suitable to the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in a longitudinal magnetic field is extended to anisotropy larger than one . The aim of this paper is the study of the line shape of the spin dynamical structure factor components +-, -+ and zz of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising chain in a longitudinal magnetic field near their sharp peaks. To reach that goal, the nature of the specific type of elementary magnetic configurations both unbound and associated with real…
We present accurate numerical estimates for the correlation amplitudes of leading and main subleading terms of the two- and four-spin correlation functions in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ model under a magnetic field. These data are obtained by fitting the correlation functions, computed numerically with the density-matrix renormalization-group method, to the corresponding correlation functions in the low-energy effective theory. For this purpose we have developed the Abelian bosonization approach to the spin chain under the open boundary conditions. We use the numerical data of the correl…
We systematically investigate possible helix states in XXZ Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Exact solutions show that a set of precession helix states can be constructed by deliberate superposition of degenerate eigenstates of the Hamiltonian under the resonant condition. When a non-Hermitian balance boundary term is imposed as a quenching action, the quench dynamics shows that a steady helix state emerges from some easily prepared initial states, including saturate and maximally mixed ferromagnetic states, according to the analysis of perturbation method. The corr…
We consider an S=1 Heisenberg chain with strong exchange (Delta) and single--ion uniaxial anisotropy (D) in a magnetic field (B) along the symmetry axis. The low energy spectrum is described by an effective S=1/2 XXZ model that acts on two different low energy sectors for a given window of fields. The vacuum of each sector exhibits Ising-like antiferromagnetic ordering that coexists with the finite spin stiffness obtained from the exact solution of the effective XXZ model. In this way, we demonstrate the existence of a spin supersolid phase. We also compute the full Delta-B quantum phase diagr…
For the line of critical antiferromagnetic XXZ chains with coupling $J>0$ and anisotropy $0<Δ\leq 1$, we describe how the block-spin renormalization procedure preserving the $SU_q(2)$ symmetry introduced by Martin-Delgado and Sierra [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1146 (1996)] can be reformulated as the translation-invariant scale-invariant Tree-Tensor-State of the smallest dimension that is compatible with the quantum symmetries of the model. The properties of this Tree-Tensor-State are studied in detail via the ground-state energy, the magnetizations and the staggered magnetizations, as well as the Sh…
In this paper, we determine the geometric phase for the one-dimensional $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain with spin-$1/2$, the exchange couple $J$ and the spin anisotropy parameter $Δ$ in a longitudinal field(LF) with the reduced field strength $h$. Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation and the mean-field theory based on the Wick's theorem, a semi-analytical theory has been developed in terms of order parameters which satisfy the self-consistent equations. The values of the order parameters are numerically computed using the matrix-product-state(MPS) method. The validity of the mean-filed theory could b…
We consider the Ising phase of the antiferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg chain on a finite-size lattice with N sites. We compute the large $N$ behavior of the spin stiffness, obtaining the correlation length ξ. We use our results to discuss the scaling behavior of metal-insulator transitions in 1D systems, taking into account the mapping between the XXZ Heisenberg chain and the spinless fermion model and known results for the Hubbard model. We study the scaling properties of both the Hubbard model and the XXZ Heisenberg chain, by solving numerically the Bethe Ansatz equations. We find that for some …
Thermodynamic properties of the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain in transverse staggered magnetic field H^y_s and uniform magnetic field H^x perpendicular to the staggered field is studied by the finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization-group method. The uniform and staggered magnetization and specific heat are calculated from zero temperature to high temperatures up to T/J=4 under various strength of magnetic fields from H^y_s/J, H^x/J=0 to 2.4. The specific heat and magnetization of the effective Hamiltonian of the Yb_4As_3 are also presented, and field induced gap formation and diverging mag…
Correlation functions of dimer operators, the product operators of spins on two adjacent sites, are studied in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain in the critical regime. The amplitudes of the leading oscillating terms in the dimer correlation functions are determined with high accuracy as functions of the exchange anisotropy parameter and the external magnetic field, through the combined use of bosonization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. In particular, for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with SU(2) symmetry, logarithmic corrections to the dimer correlations due to the m…
We consider the non-equilibrium evolution in the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain for fixed magnetization after a local quantum quench. This model is equivalent to interacting spinless fermions. Initially an infinite magnetic field is applied to n consecutive sites and the ground state is calculated. At time t=0 the field is switched off and the time evolution of observables such as the z-component of spin is computed using the Time Evolving Block Decimation (TEBD) algorithm. We find that the observables exhibit strong signatures of linearly propagating spinon and bound state excitations. These p…
We consider an interaction quench in the critical spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain. We numerically compute the time evolution of the two-point correlation functions of spin operators in the thermodynamic limit and compare the results to predictions obtained in the framework of the Luttinger liquid approximation. We find that the transverse correlation function $\langle S^x_jS^x_{j+\ell}\rangle$ agrees with the Luttinger model prediction to a surprising level of accuracy. The agreement for the longitudinal two-point function $\langle S^z_jS^z_{j+\ell}\rangle$ is found to be much poorer. We specula…
We present a systematic study of coupled $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains in an effective staggered field. We investigate several effects of the staggered field in the {\em higher} ({\em two or three}) {\em dimensional} spin system analytically. In particular, in the case where the staggered field and the inter-chain interaction compete with each other, we predict, using mean-field theory, a characteristic phase transition. The spin-wave theory predicts that the behavior of the gaps induced by the staggered field is different between the competitive case and the non-competitive case…
General conditions in which disordered, spin liquid, and valence-bond ordered phases occur in quantum Ising antiferromagnets are studied using the prototype Kagome lattice spin models. A range of quantum dynamical processes in the Ising model, with and without total Ising spin conserved, are analytically shown to yield all three characteristic quantum paramagnetic phases in the Kagome system. Special emphasis is given to the XXZ model that can be sensibly compared to the Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. It is explicitly demonstrated that the total-spin-conserving dynamics can yield a…
We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the $J_{1}^{XXZ}$--$J_{2}^{XXZ}$ Heisenberg model for spin-1 particles on an infinite square lattice interacting via nearest-neighbour ($J_1 \equiv 1$) and next-nearest-neighbour ($J_2 > 0$) bonds. Both bonds have the same $XXZ$-type anisotropy in spin space. The effects on the quasiclassical Néel-ordered and collinear stripe-ordered states of varying the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ is investigated using the coupled cluster method carried out to high orders. By contrast with the spin-1/2 case studied previously, we predict no intermediate disordered …
We study a spin-1/2 model with triangular XXZ-clusters on the orthogonal-dimer chain in the presence of an external magnetic field. First, we discuss the case where the triangular clusters are coupled via intermediate "classical" Ising spins. Diagonalization of the triangular XXZ-clusters yields the exact ground states; finite-temperature properties are computed exactly by an additional transfer-matrix step. A detailed analysis reveals a large variety of ground states at magnetization M equal to fractions 0, 1/4, and 1/2 of the saturation magnetization M=1. Some of these ground states break tr…
